This is a traditional Kazakh song, using traditional Kazakh instruments, the kobyz and the dombra. It's based on a true story of a political prisoner who, as a form of torture, was falsely told that his wife, his only love, had abandoned him while he was imprisoned. He only later learned that it wasn't true. The song's lyrics are from a letter he wrote to her after he was told she had left him. From my understanding, he saw her only once more before he died in prison. Dididau has become one of the most beloved songs from Dimash's concerts. It's the first Kazakh song he ever performed in front of a foreign audience, fulfilling a lifelong dream of his. When he sang it at his NYC concert, he was visibly moved when the entire arena sang along in his native language. His concert performances of it in both his Bastau and NYC concerts are well worth watching.

The song speaks of the composition of Magzhan Zhumabayev, who is considered an exponent of Kazakh literature. When in 1928 he was sent to prison, and later sent to camps in North Karelia, Russia, Zuleikha followed him, no matter where he was taken, she always found him and came to see him everywhere. She went to great lengths to get him released from prison in 1936, even asking the famous writer Maxim Gorky for help. During his prison term, Zhumabayev received the lying news that his wife had abandoned him, in this sense Daididau was written as a lament for the lost love and suffering of the nation. But contrary to what he thought, outside his wife worked hard for his freedom and in 1934 his sentence was reduced and he was finally able to return to the family.
Oh gosh as beautiful as this is… your life won’t be complete unless u see Adai+Daididau at his Bastau concert.. besides his unbelievable traditional kazakh costume & the droves of kazakh instruments, the dream of him playing this song on the big stage & the responsibility of that is all over Dimash in this performance. He’s overcome with emotion at the end & the vocals throughout match the emotion. This song needed an audience. I so hope u see it & share it with us, it’s its own experience. It honestly doesn’t even feel like the same song as this somehow. I can’t recommend this enough 🙏🙏
The bowed two stringed instrument is a kobyz and the two stringed lute like instrument is a dombra. Both are sacred Kazakh instruments. Dimash is an excellent dombra player. You can see him play the dombra in many other performances of Daididau as well as an instrumental piece called River of Love which is on Dimash’s channel. If you have the time, whether you react to it or not, I’d recommend you check out Dimash’s Bastau concert performance of Adai/Daididau. There are about a hundred dombra players with Dimash and he is in a traditional shapan. It’s a very emotional performance and a feast for the eyes.
@@JDubReacts Yes, DEFINITELY don't miss him performing this at his Bastau concert. As mentioned, 100 young men playing the dombra, Dimash looking like a prince in his beautiful traditional Kazakh costume and even the beautiful stage are all a sight to behold. Be SURE to watch until the very end. At one point in the song Dimash has to pause for a bit to collect himself as he's so emotional, and then at the very end he's on his knees with his head down and comes up with tears (and sweat) on his face. It's all very impactful, and since I first saw it about three years ago it has remained one of my top three performances. LOVE your heartfelt reactions! (And the fact that you didn't know about the kobyz and dombra tells me that you haven't seen near enough Dimash performances. 😀 ) Greetings from a Las Vegas Dear!

A great traditional Kazakh song, with Kazakh instruments, like the Dombra, and the Kovyz. Dimash sings it with such passion, that he conveys those sad feelings to us. Dimash singing his music, is for me extraordinary. And that is why he is so dear to his land.
A Kazakh song, with the now famed instruments the dombra and kobyz. The piece of music was written by Kazakh poet Magzhan Zhumabayev, who used to call his beloved wife Zylikha - Daididau. Magzhan, also a patriotic activist during the repressive Stalinist regime got arrested twice: in 1926 and 1937. Throughout his ordeal in prison his beloved Zylikha traveled great distances to visit him in prison, all in vain. When Zylikha was unable to visit him for an extended period, Magzhan’s jailers lied to him that his wife had given up on him and was living with someone else. Not knowing what to believe, Magzhan wrote a poignant poem in the form of a letter in which he declares, “Oh Daididau, your face is as beautiful as the moon on the fourteenth day” and wonders, “Did you really choose to leave me? We had promised to never part…”. His wife reached out to Russian writer Maksim Gorkiy and asked him for help because he had rescued many intellectuals during Repression years. Finally, Gorkiy helped Magzhan too and the poet was set free in 1936. During the author’s short stint of freedom, the Daididau poem mysteriously took on a life of its own. It was set to music, possibly by the poet himself and, whereas his works were still forbidden, it somehow began to be circulated as a folk song. The second arrest was fatal for him. Kazakh poet was executed by shooting in 1938. Sources: (kazakhworld.com/2018/09/10/story-one-song-daididau), (medium.com/illumination/daididau-from-obscure-poem-to-worldwide-hit-Elizabeth Khan)
The traditional instruments are Dombra and Kobyz. They both have only two strings and their sound is incredible. The song for many years was considered a popular song. However, later on, scientists discovered that the song was written by a Kazakh writer, poet, scientist, and teacher, Magzhan Zhumabayev (1893-1938). Magzhan Zhumabayev was arrested and sent to prison. In prison they told him that his wife, the only love of his life, had abandoned him. It broke her heart and she wrote this poem about her love and the great pain she was in then. It turned out that his wife never left him (he had received false information), they met again when he got out of jail. Unfortunately, his happiness did not last long, he was again arrested and executed in 1938 as an enemy of the state. The author expressed his feelings to his wife, when he thought that they would never be together again.👌
One of Dimash's most fervent wishes...to introduce the rest of the world, especially the Western world, to Kazakh traditional music. He has performed DAIDIDAU in many of his prior concerts, but now that he's gaining more exposure in the West, I'd assume he's hoping this is the right time to share his culture and native music to a wider audience. His Kazakh songs are all so heartfelt & steeped in ancient tradition. If I'm not mistaken, it was at his 2019 New York concert that singing this song brought him to tears. If I've cited the wrong concert, I'm sure someone will correct me. There are several performances of Dimash playing Dombra (guitar-like instrument). The other hollowed out instrument played with a bow is called a Kobyz.
Right it was the New York concert and he sang this song with us and was clearly emotional. I was there and he sang part of it acapella and suddenly you realize that this voice you always heard on TH-cam through a screen is real and so beautiful, I just sat there stunned for 3 hours
@@sharonmadjar Thank you for the confirmation, Sharon. Wish I had been there! I had to see it on TH-cam. But maybe in the future if he's back in America...
Thank you! Instrumentation amazing! A real sad story behind this song (Gloria Wu channel gives stories behind so of Dimash's songs. My favourite on Singer 2017...
Hi. Bastau 2017 concert version is the best! Dimash was wearing traditional Kazakh costume, and all the emotions in his performance was incredible! Check please another song, "Mahhabat ber magan" from the same concert. Thank you!
Salut, l instrument qui resemble à la guitare s appelle DOMBRA, le 2eme instrument qui resemble à un violoncelle je ne connais pas...merci pour la vidéo...j adore cette chanson du répertoire traditionnel kazakh.
Great backstory of this song...true love story. Also an older Daididau performance from Singer 2017. Very beautiful. Just go to Gloria Wu’s channel For back story and the rest. Back story on several songs. Don’t miss these. Audio sounds great. This will always be a favorite of mine. He performs this at most of his concerts and we Dears sing it with him!
A song with a painful story, Dimash's voice with a wide palette of multi colorful emotions and his deep sensibility with which he brings the song in a magnificent way. At the concert Bastau 2017, Daididau is charged with strong emotions. Dimash's first big concert in Astana. He is on stage with the dombrists, in folk costume. Also a touching performance, to tears, on the stage of Barkley Center NY. Daidau was sung with Dimash by audiences from 54 countries around the world. The realization of a boy's dream. Thank you for another wonderful reaction. Dimash's songs in mother tongue are a special experience. Samaltau, Kairan Elin, Qaragym-Ai ... I believe you would like Durdaraz, an energetic folk-rock song and Dimash’s unbridled energy on stage.
Another stellar reaction! I feel the same as you expressed about this song. When he performed this in his concert in New York, he struggled with his own emotions at the end because it was *so* important to him to bring this traditional song to the western world. Dears came from countries all around the globe - and almost all of them sang the lyrics in his own language right along with him. Thank you once again J-Dub!
The love this wonderful man shows for his native land and it's history and traditions brings me to tears every time. It is a beautiful thing to see. If you can't feel that, your soul has turned to stone. I bow before you with deepest respect, Dimash. Love from California💖
Another beautiful Kazakh song is "Samaltau", you may want to react to it as well. Performance from his home music studio "Tokyo Jazz festival 2020" .th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=samaltau+dimash
When he sings this at his New York concert he almost cries at the end. He does it even better than here. He often plays the dombra himself at the beginning.
The two stringed instrument played with a bow is an ancient, traditional Kazakh instrument called the Kobyz or Qobyz, the other two are also ancient, traditional two stringed instruments called a Dombra and every home has one and all Kazakhs learn to play it.
Now I just need to get my hands on those. Sounds to be somewhat "customary" for Kazakhs, but super unique to me. Don't think I've actually ever seen one in person...any of them really. I'd probably never master it as those musicians have, but it's all about the learning journey for me 😊.
There are 2 two stringed instruments called Dombra. They are the soul of Kazakhstan and almost every home has one. The other with the bow is also a 2 stringed ancient traditional instrument called Kobyz. The song is a letter/poem that a man wrote to his love. They were totally dedicated to each other and he was arrested and wrongly charged with treason. He was lied to, and told that his love left him, so he wrote this. Later he was released and they were reunited. Then he was once more arrested and then sadly executed. This song is known by all of Kazakhstan. Dimash sings it often.
I haven't seen this version of Daididau. Beautiful color. You are missing out on a lot not knowing the background though. This song is extremely important to the Kazakh people. I'd suggest checking these out on your own. You'll love it even more. Great reaction! Daididau (Kazakh w/ Eng subs) Behind the scenes and Kazakh history th-cam.com/video/tOs7rkn36L0/w-d-xo.html Bastau 2017 th-cam.com/video/Ra4v19Rp6cQ/w-d-xo.html
Just a couple more notes: After some self-guided study, my understanding is that intentionally misleading political prisoners to believe that they had been abandoned by their loved ones was among the thought control techniques of the Stalinist captors. (And other criminals since.) The poet's anguish at this became symbolic of the collective suffering of the Kazakh people under foreign domination. Performance of the poem must have been a courageous act of dissent. Another note is about Dimash's Bastau ("Beginning") performances in Astana, the Kazakh capitol. His Astana performances often have the feel of a homecoming to beloved countrymen to me. He seems to sing out the deepest remaining bits of his soul after his exhausting tours abroad in these concerts.
@@davidf5097 you captured the meaning of the song and its significance to Kazakh people so well, Sir! I am Kazakh myself and could not have said it better. Thank you!
The two traditional instruments are the Kobyz and the Dombra. Dombra is the national Kazakh instrument, Dimash plays it very well, you can see him playing this instrument in RIVERS OF LOVE, Im sure you will love it!!
Thank you for a heartfelt reaction and great insights! A beautiful performance. The stage and colours are fascinating. I love Dimash's Kazakh songs. They are so authentic and emotional. This song 'Daididau' means very much to Kazakhs and is special for Dimash. He was 15, when he made his own arrangement to this song. 'Daididau' was the Kazakh song he brought to the international stages in competitions, and he sings this in all his concerts, often wearing a traditional(like) costume. A very sad song, a part of Kazakh history. I feel like this is more than a song. The same applies to many others which Dimash chooses to sing - songs with deep meaning, often sad but beautiful, humane and hopeful. Another Kazakh folk song with important historic background is 'Samaltau'. I recommend it, other Dears have already given links I noticed...
This song for me was the highlight of his New York concert. He was very emotional during this song. He explained he had dreamed of singing this song on a large stage in New York with fans around the world and he did it. Not only did he do that as the concert at Barclays was sold out, people from 54 countries flew in to see it. Not only that, but an international crowd did their best to sing in Kazakh which touched him deeply. Here is a link to a fan cam. Please take a few minutes to watch it. You will see how humble and appreciative he is. th-cam.com/video/LkiH89yhxlE/w-d-xo.html
When he did it the first time on the “singer” competition he brought some of his friends from college to play quite a lot of traditional instruments and all were in national costumes. It was beautiful. You will like it even more if see this in concert
Thinking of some artists from my country who moved abroad and they "forgot" about their homeland. And here comes Dimash from small Kazachstan (I bet many people would not be able to find it on the map) and he proudly shares the old traditional song with the world and the world loves him for it and even sings alone in foreign language they have never heard before...do we recall any other famous artist that has done such thing? Thanks again for great reaction. Surprisingly I'm watching it again with my Sunday morning coffee, looks like it is becomming a habit:) Regarding the song I had some backround already but reading the comments here I've learned so much more. Thank you, Dears. Have a great day! Love from Slovakia.
Small Kazakhstan? 😅 Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country, and the ninth-largest country in the world - land area of 2,724,900 square kilometres (1,052,100 sq mi)...
@@Ratile_ true😁I meant more it is not so well known in the other side of the world. When watching some reactions people usually have no idea where it is situated. Apologies, did not mean to offend anyone😊
The instruments are qobyz (chello like) and dombra (guitar like), traditional Kazakh instruments, Dimash himself plays dombra very well. As you like interesting instruments and unusual arrangements I highly recommend you check his duet with a Mongolian singer Tengri, Swan Goose. Not many people react to it, but it's amazing.
I like this song when I first heard it, and I dig all his Kazakh songs, and I think in his native song I love best, but every song what ever he sings are all amaze me anyway, most of singer can sing only one type of their own style, but Dimash seems suit all, I can hear when he perform some Chinse song, and I love better than the original, what a talent guy, I watch him since first day THAT I found him, and he keep improve himself, and still maintain very humble, that's really amazing, thanks for your great reaction.
Thank you for a very nice reaction to this beautiful performance! It is so dear and important to Dimash that people get to know his Kazakh culture - and like it. I am here for the first time and I like you, but the audio is a little dull, or vague, I don't understand you so easily (maybe it's my TV?), the sound of the song and the visuals in the background are great! If you like the Kazakh sound and atmosphere and want to learn about history, try out Samaltau from the Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020. A beautiful and tragic story, taken place in Kazakhstan where the men were deported from their home to fight in the war, on the Russian side in WWI... Thank you!
A best wishes for your real life stuff, we all have it, thank you for another great reaction. Dimash and his family are deep into preserving Kazakh culture and it is part of his motivation in life and music. This is part of his dream of performing Kazakh music for the world, now a dream come true.
React please for one more song, when Dimash singing with his parents, song: "Dearest Mother" All his grandparents was sitting there and watching the concert.
👉 This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak. The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments. (Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages.) A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music. The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz. 🌼🇩🇪
If you love DImash, then you might want to take a look at Hua Chenyu (also know as Hua Hua). There are great singers, and then there are great artists. Hua Hua is the definition of a great artist. His skill sets include: flawlessly mixing genres within songs, exceptional stage presence, delivery of emotion, brilliantly recomposing songs, and composing his own masterpieces. In some of his songs for a competition, he has to rewrite covers within 24 hours, and he developed new masterpieces. Two introduction songs to Hua Hua are: "Nunchucks", and "Fake Monk". Emotional songs and covers that have been re-mastered are , ,
Gloria Wu has a great channel where she shares backstories to this music. You are absolutely spit on in the things you feel about it. He loves his country intensely and this was written by someone you would call their national poet when he was in prison. So much at least for me such a feeling of loss
To me, this is one of my favorite songs by Dimash. It seems that every time he sings in his own language, it touches my soul in a very special way. Like Samaltau. The melody line is so beautiful, and knowing the story behind the song only adds so much emotional connection to it. Here`s the link to the back story, it does have captions, too.

I love this song it's BEAUTIFUL🖤🖤
PERFECTLY said, my friend!!
Right it was the New York concert and he sang this song with us and was clearly emotional. I was there and he sang part of it acapella and suddenly you realize that this voice you always heard on TH-cam through a screen is real and so beautiful, I just sat there stunned for 3 hours
@@sharonmadjar I envy you, girl! What an experience!

@@sharonmadjar Thank you for the confirmation, Sharon. Wish I had been there! I had to see it on TH-cam. But maybe in the future if he's back in America...
One of my favorites from Dimash. This is a very special song and when he sings in his native language, it seems to me he sounds even grander.
Thank you! Instrumentation amazing! A real sad story behind this song (Gloria Wu channel gives stories behind so of Dimash's songs. My favourite on Singer 2017...

Gracias por reaccionar a nuestro querido Dimash él es un artista extraordinario.

Hi. Bastau 2017 concert version is the best! Dimash was wearing traditional Kazakh costume, and all the emotions in his performance was incredible! Check please another song, "Mahhabat ber magan" from the same concert. Thank you!
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Salut, l instrument qui resemble à la guitare s appelle DOMBRA, le 2eme instrument qui resemble à un violoncelle je ne connais pas...merci pour la vidéo...j adore cette chanson du répertoire traditionnel kazakh.
Thansk, it is great reaction
💜💜💜
Another stellar reaction! I feel the same as you expressed about this song. When he performed this in his concert in New York, he struggled with his own emotions at the end because it was *so* important to him to bring this traditional song to the western world. Dears came from countries all around the globe - and almost all of them sang the lyrics in his own language right along with him. Thank you once again J-Dub!
Superb performance by the great Dimash 💖
Thank you 👍🇷🇺❤️
Com certeza está música é muito linda e o Dimash cantando então ele arrasa ❤❤❤
it The "guitar" is a dombra Kazakhistan. (Dimash is a master of the instrument) In a previous version, Dimash wore full national costume.
Beautiful song ! Dimash ❤👑

So Amazing
Nadie como Dimash 💖💗🌻🌼🏵️❤️
When he sings this at his New York concert he almost cries at the end. He does it even better than here. He often plays the dombra himself at the beginning.
Samaltau is a song you would love
The two stringed instrument played with a bow is an ancient, traditional Kazakh instrument called the Kobyz or Qobyz, the other two are also ancient, traditional two stringed instruments called a Dombra and every home has one and all Kazakhs learn to play it.
Now I just need to get my hands on those. Sounds to be somewhat "customary" for Kazakhs, but super unique to me. Don't think I've actually ever seen one in person...any of them really. I'd probably never master it as those musicians have, but it's all about the learning journey for me 😊.
@@JDubReacts I have no doubt you will get one and learn to play it. You are a man of great character and determination. Good luck in your quest👍
@@JDubReacts Several Dears have purchased Dombras and are learning to play.
@@JDubReacts I've heard that a lot of fans have ordered dombras directly from Kazakhstan. From exactly where, I don't know.
@@barbarasaracini1271 I have this also but don't know how...
Es una cancion preciosa. Los instrumentos son el Kobyz y Dombra, ambos instrumentos folkloricos de Kazajastan
Dimash sings it often.
great reaction💥👍👋
I haven't seen this version of Daididau. Beautiful color. You are missing out on a lot not knowing the background though. This song is extremely important to the Kazakh people. I'd suggest checking these out on your own. You'll love it even more. Great reaction!

Thanks, I'll definitely take a look at those.
Just a couple more notes:
After some self-guided study, my understanding is that intentionally misleading political prisoners to believe that they had been abandoned by their loved ones was among the thought control techniques of the Stalinist captors.
Thank you!
Thank you! That means so much to me. 😙
Dimash has brought me a deep respect and affection for the Kazakh people. 🙏🙏🙏
Kobyz y Dombra.
Dimash toca el dombra muy bien.
👍👍👍
For your own personal enjoyment, you should check out the Bastau 2017 performance of this song.
It’s time you should react to his “ love is like a dream” and “ love of tired swans” with caption on!

A much beloved Kazak folk song.
I saw the Kobyz and a Dombra. Could not get a good look to see what the other string instrument is.
The instruments are Kobyz, looks like a violin ,and Dombra looks like a guitar. 🥰🥰🇧🇷
I love his Kazakh songs too !
Qobyz is the one with the bow
Also a great Dimash song showcasing interesting instruments is Samaltau, Tokio jazz festival version.
Please for reaction.React, please,to the song "Passione" in Italian comporsed by Igor Krutoy, version in 2019,New Wave.
Qobyz (playing Olzhas Kurmanbeck) and Dombyra (or Dombra) are the traditional instruments.
If you liked this you will love Samaltau from the Tokyo Jazz Festival. He uses the Qobyz in that too.
Thank you!

(Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages.)
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices.
