I've been watching Dave since he started on TH-cam. I even did some of the Pathfinder coursework while I was in Afghanistan in 2012. Much of this stuff has helped me to stay productive even under the worst of the circumstances. This is still one of the most underappreciated channels on TH-cam, even after all this time.
A few years ago, I bought an el cheapo Fedarms SS12 folding/collapsing single-shot shotgun - to stuff in a backpack, and a flock of these adapters from various vendors - even including some 50 year old Savage Four-Tenners, that convert 12 gauge to .410 - as a project to evaluate the concept. I think it's brilliant, frankly, and it shouldn't be limited to single-shots. I have two side by side coach guns - one an outside-hammer black powder gun with Damascus barrels, that I'd only shoot 12 gauge black powder rounds in, but that with these adapters, which provide all the barrel/chamber strength required of the rounds they chamber, becomes a double rifle/modern smokeless 20 gauge/versatile platform - like a "Lego gun" equivalent in the shotgun world. Makes black powder Damascus guns usable field pieces again. These adapters work equally well in over/unders, giving you a rifle/shotgun combo or a centerfire/rimfire double rifle that switches back to a 12 gauge in a wink. My next test is with a Mossberg 600 pump using a smoothbore rifled slug barrel with rifle sights and a rifled insert, to capitalize on the sights. A manual load through the side port into the adapter (installed in the barrel before the barrel is installed on the gun) will require some workaround for the extractor/ejector, but it's a project - and that's exactly what these things are really good for - exploring what CAN be done, and how to work around the obstacles to extract the most versatility possible out of your armament inventory. Interesting video!
You sold me on these adapter systems longgg ago.. and they just keep getting better and better. I also highly recommend everyone take a class in reloading ammunition. It’s very valuable information to know in a doomsday scenario. As we shooters know, in an emergency or panic, ammo is the very first to go off those shelves. If you know how to load your own, you’re already ahead of the game. Buy the materials (powder, primers, projectiles, etc) when there is no panic, that way you have it in advance for a decent price. The stuff basically lasts forever in a cool, dry environment.
Mr Canterbury, thank you for these vids. I actually bought both your courses in Udemy earlier this week. I'm making bugout bags for the family now so thank you for this knowledge.
I had to do a little studying but I finally figured out where you were headed with this. I started with a single H&R 12 ga mod choke, bought the 8” 22 cal adapter and the black powder adapter, then I picked up a .22 cal pistol with both cylinders and a holster. I didn’t quite understand the reasoning with the 45LC/410 until I watched the Last Shot video and it all came together for me and made sense, so...I ordered the stack pack and am looking at a Bond Arms Grizzly 45LC/410 derringer.
I am a HUGE fan of sub cal shotgun adapters. I've collected so many in various calibers and manufacturers over the years, love every one of them. Fun plinking and a great way to stretch out ammo and save money. I have a couple of smooth bore ones but I def prefer the rifled adapters. All my rifled adapters are extremely accurate. Great video, thanks for sharing 👍
I have a 301 in 20 ga. I love it. Light and powerful. Good choice for the demonstration. I have 3 Chaszel and 4 of the short adapters. It makes a couple guns good for every occasion.
I've bird hunted with the same SxS 12g for many years. 10 y ago, bought a pair of 20g adapters. I dont use high brass. Low is sufficient. Having the gun loaded with 12 and 20g helps extend my ammo and allow me different shooting options. R bbl is mod, L bbl is full choke. The combinations and load amounts are quite useful. My 2 c.
I bought a "Rossi Matched Pair" (MP) in .22WMR/.410 a couple of years ago. I put a red-dot sight on the rifle bbl. (w/adapter), but left the irons intact. It breaks down into a 20" case and it's a nice, light, versatile addition to the car trunk. Great for camping trips...cost about $200 back then.(2020)
Dave, a huge thank you for this video. I have a single shot H&R 20ga and this video is awsome. Hope to find a stack pack for this gun. It was my very first gun for hunting when I was 12 years old. I always loved hunting with it because of the lightweight and options. Now, I'd have even more. I've even killed deer and turkeys with it. I feel that little 20ga is a must-have survival gun. Thanks again. Super glad I found your channel. I enjoyed the 1930s squirrel camp video too.
I was trying to find a perfect survival do anything gun. I immediately thought of a shotgun however i wasn't sure what type of shotgun. The fact that the single shot shotgun has these adapters as well as black powder capabilities makes it perfect.
Good morning David! I would like you to know that I purchased your book 1, the Portuguese version. I apologize for not having bought in English, as my English is not so fluent! I loved and am loving every line of your book! Peace and Good to you and everyone on your team! Strong hug 💪!
Good stuff. I have a bunch of these adapters even more then dave showed. They're great little things for what they are. I did find that you can kind of "time" or "pattern" the 22lr adapter by rotating it in the chamber to see how it shoots. It's pretty damn consistent if you can remember what way you oriented it each time you put it in. Mine hits pretty much dead on with the adapter facing the 9 o clock position in the chamber. Basically putting the 22 closest to the left because it's off center of the adapter.
yes! I have been preaching the benefits of single-shot shotguns and caliber adapters for years and years! i have an old Rossi Trifecta and a whole kit of the 8in adapters in that nifty lil carrying case :)
My uncle that I gave my 12-gauge too loves it, it is my very first H&R pardner and I gave it to stay in the family, and so I had an excuse to get one of those folding single single shot haha ,for me and each of my kids haha
Dave, I was chuckling the entire time I was watching this video! What a great & responsible way to follow up on those critical naysayers comments from the other day! Great info and video as always Sir!
I picked up one of the Stevens after watching your original review. Not to crazy about the extra safety and the fact that it was made in China. All that aside a great gun to keep out in the ol Chevy. 👍👍
A lot of shooters will get an adaptor just for fun. If you only have 1 break open(single-side by side or O/U) shotgun for everything the sub cal adaptors come in handy, if whatever you are hunting is beyond the shotguns range. Right choke and shell, you can shoot big game out to 50 yds or a bit further with buckshot. But 100-150 yds is where a 30-30 or bigger cartridge come in handy. My last deer was shot with my Browning superposed 26" I/C-Mod at a bit over 100yds with an old 30-30 Win barrel machined down to fit my O/U chamber I had it made back in the 1970's. Very nice 10 pointer. By handloading got that gun, from a 25 yds to a 40 yds Buckshot Deer gun. But that 30-30 adaptor made it a 150 yds Deer getter
Great video Dave! I have the videos you did years ago about these adapters as a saved video. Also the one on the butt stock and fore stock that holds survival gear for the H&R shotgun. I already had a 20 gauge but found a 12 gauge a couple years ago and yet to buy the stocks for both of them. To me those stocks make sense for a survival situation. Maybe cover those butt and fore stocks as a added video to this series??
Short Lane use to sell the blackout kit that was a black powder reloadable 12gauge shell kit. Been out of stock forever. I bought the stack pack though.
Just a quick question, I’ve seen some of those adapters coming in 30-30 and 45-70, along with other similar high powered rounds. Have you seen anyone use them? And or are they reliable enough to not damage the barrel. The last question is, I like to hunt a lot with a traditions 50 cal flintlock using round balls in particular. That being said could i also use round balls with this particular set up? I love the added advantage of being able to use any available ammunition at my disposal, but again i also really enjoy being able to cast my own round balls and use it in the same gun. Love your videos, extremely informative!
I only use the 22 adapter and keep the rest as a backup, but I found something pretty interesting. If you run a 22 revolver alongside this setup, you will get better accuracy at distance as the rounds don't tumble out of the barrel. But at 10 yards, the grouping was virtually identical with the adapter as it is with the pistol. It lands pretty much where the bead is. It was when it went out to 15 yards that it really started to open up to about a 5 inch group, and that may be because the bead starts to obscure the target more. Still, it works as intended. Definitely nice to have in a pinch
How about my great uncle Winchester model 37 red letter made in the 1940s 30 inch barrel single barrel 12g full choke and his 1950s Stevens 12-gauge bolt action 28 inch barrel full choke . Love old antiques. Great content you share love the black power adapters 209 primer set up you talk about or make your own old shell or brass shells. Great content
Them are nice, had one years ago. All the adapters. Had to borrow it to my brother though, (mom and dad said so). He sold it. What joke maybe ill start looking into that again. Them are nice to have. Have a couple of different options .
The first video of yours I watched was you showing how to use a break action shotgun as a black powder gun. Kind of wild how things have come full circle like that.
45-70, is that available? I’m not sure, but just with my limited knowledge of the utility of projectiles, there’s probably no need for one. A 45-70 is a heavy hitting, generally shorter range cartridge. (Also, an expensive one.) you can get that with a 12ga slug. These adapters are more for if you’re out and about, and need to shoot a squirrel with your 12ga, but don’t want to eat a bunch of lead, is my understanding. Or actually humanely take a deer in the same situation with a rifle cartridge.
I have the 12 GAa to .38/.357 and the 12 Ga to 22lr. But sure they are by the she company, but they are pretty accurate at a reasonable distance. They work out of a Browning Citori over and under as well. In case anyone was wondering. I also have a 308 win to 32 adapter. In case I'm out with the 308 and I see a rabbit.
How does this system in a side by side 12ga. Double barrel. Do these adapters come in a longer rifle barrel length. Shooting a shotgun in one barrel and an accurate rifle round that would be accurate out to 250 yards would be wonderful. One of my double barrels has exposed hammers that allows me to select which barrel I use. Thanks for what you do.
Is great video. That three inch adapter would be very handy with 22 CB, 22 short, and and 22 Lr subsonic, It would be very quiet out of the shotgun barrel with the three inch adapter. Good stuff. Thank you.
does Short Lane make an 8 inch .22 LR adapter for the .410 shotgun? for the 20 GA. shotgun? if so, it would seem to me, that would be better than the 12 GA. adapter for .22 LR. And by the way, I have followed you from the start and really liked Dual Survival with you and Cody. Keep up the great videos.
I don't know about other areas of the U.S., but .410 and .45 Colt ammo have become not only more expensive, but scarcer than hens teeth, in my patch 'O the woods.
I have the whole Chiappa 12ga adapter set. I also had that Alaskan gunsmith make me a 10' 30-30 adapter. I may have to buy a Short Lane 22lr adapter now. It's a kit for my Survivor stocked, Tracker non-rifled New England.
I bought my father this exact gun, wood stock though, for Xmas back when Wal-Mart still sold firearms.shot alot of geese on the farm with that bad boy.

That's great to meet you. Your a very wish person do you have books on your vedioes to learn what you know. Because getting ammo is real hard to do. So learning how to make your own would be perfect. Like you said be prepared.
a single shot 20 or 12 is just a great utility gun. i have probably shot my "backdoor 20 gauge" more than any other gun i own. chasing off stuff bothering out chickens and such

I would like to take one of his in person classes as I'm only a couple hours from his school
My fav vid he has done was back in the day. He had a few drinks and cut his arm on purpose to show how to sew (stich) the cut back up.
I had no idea these adapters existed, you really can learn something new every day.

Been on TH-cam for 10 years...this is most useful video I've ever watched..
Again VERSATILITY & FLEXIBILITY, at it's BEST, with a BUDGET GUN, a TRUE SURVIVALIST & HUNTERS TOOL'S, .. MASSIVE THANKS 🙏👍‼️ DAVID .....
I have a 301 in 20 ga. I love it. Light and powerful. Good choice for the demonstration. I have 3 Chaszel and 4 of the short adapters. It makes a couple guns good for every occasion.
Thanks Dave, for all the years of advise, knowledge and entertainment that you have provided the American public
Saw that Blackie Thomas subs watched this, glad I clicked on it. Instant Subscription.

So simple yet so well thought out
Great video to illustrate the reason I need to order all those adapters and never sell my single shot 12ga!! Thanks Dave.
You sold me on the versatility of a single shot. I've only got a pump and now this is on my short list.
Dave, a huge thank you for this video. I have a single shot H&R 20ga and this video is awsome. Hope to find a stack pack for this gun. It was my very first gun for hunting when I was 12 years old. I bought one of them stevens 12 gauge 301s, after your review, I love it.
i'm lovin the mountain man vibes that Dave is puttin off lately, so jealous of his life!!

I have used the adapters since you started talking about them but have never thought of this and I love using the 209 adapter
Very informative! Thank you Dave!
Didn't know there were adapters. Sooo good to know! Wish there was an adapter for .32 ammo. Guess I need to look for the adapter and a .32 pistol.
fascinating, thanks for the breakdown and demo

Hey Dave, great video. I wonder how a 45-70 would work in that gun. Thanks much for making this video.

Being able to use sub caliber has long been a real tool. I can see .45 Colt out of a single shot 12 ga as being very useful under some circumstances.
You definitely made me think Twice about the adapter stack pack, I will have to go looking for them at the next show
Dave that’s cool I was thinking of doing that but was worried about strength n all with shooting but now I’m not worried thanks.
I have the 12 GAa to .38/.357 and the 12 Ga to 22lr. But sure they are by the she company, but they are pretty accurate at a reasonable distance. I use the "stack n pack" on my midland back pack 12ga. It's a great combo for a small foldable 12ga for a survival gun.
I have the adapters to run 12ga, 20ga, 28ga, and 410. I will be getting a 20ga 209 plug to add to it. Thanks for the idea
Is great video. That three inch adapter would be very handy with 22 CB, 22 short, and and 22 Lr subsonic, It would be very quiet out of the shotgun barrel with the three inch adapter. Good stuff. Thank you.
I just ordered a single shot break action shotgun so I can build my survival/ bushcraft shotgun
I'm thinking about getting a single barrel 12 gauge myself, and getting these adapters for it. A little something to have as a just in case.
@@rickyflinchum2909 yea I'm planing on modifying my so it folds in half completely and adding storage in the stock like he shows in an older video
@@rickyflinchum2909 as well as buying a few of the adapters
does Short Lane make an 8 inch .22 LR adapter for the .410 shotgun? for the 20 GA. shotgun? if so, it would seem to me, that would be better than the 12 GA. adapter for .22 LR. And by the way, I have followed you from the start and really liked Dual Survival with you and Cody. Keep up the great videos.
And that's what I love about the Short Lane adapters!
I don't know about other areas of the U.S., but .410 and .45 Colt ammo have become not only more expensive, but scarcer than hens teeth, in my patch 'O the woods.
Dave awesome video, I’ll be looking for those adapters and that Steven’s gun
I have the same gun but had my gunsmith shorten the barrel to 18.5" and replace the modified choke tube. Works great and is handier.
I have the whole Chiappa 12ga adapter set. I also had that Alaskan gunsmith make me a 10' 30-30 adapter. I may have to buy a Short Lane 22lr adapter now. It's a kit for my Survivor stocked, Tracker non-rifled New England.
I have an antique Hopkins & Allen drop block single shot shotgun and put a .45 acp adaptor in it. Shoots like a dream!
I really like this info. Thanks!
YT doesn’t that why they demonetized the video and the reason I don’t do them much anymore
I never saw this kit, that stacks .
It gives the old brain lots to chew on thanks Dave!😂👍❤
Thanks!
While the stack pack adapters are definitely useful, I would much rather have longer adapter inserts 203mm (8") long.
I bought my father this exact gun, wood stock though, for Xmas back when Wal-Mart still sold firearms.shot alot of geese on the farm with that bad boy.
Our walmart still sells guns
Great shotgun.
Do you have any experience with magnum or rifle adaptors ? 30-30, 45-70, 357,& 44 mag ? I know short lane doesn’t offer them. Just curious if you have impute one way or the other on if you would trust them in your single shot. Like rifled or untitled if you felt the pressure difference between the two would make the difference on it being a safe and viable option. Or do we simply avoid them all together
Thanks for the great videos
Excellent
I think I’ll go with the 8” rifled adapter, should have similar accuracy as a pistol calibre with the barrel length.
Ever thought about saving the spent primers and using them as actual shot? That would be interesting to see...
Stevens is almost half way to a combo gun. I have a couple Savage models and really like them. I’d like to see a video on the TPS M6 357/410.
And it to would be demonetized just like this one has been
Very informative video
7:54 - I don't even hunt nor do I like firing a gun, but that time 7:54, some sweet satisfying viewing of perfect fits
Hope you try it and maybe a video ?
What is the cost of the adapters for the shotgun? And can you tell me again where I could get them? Appreciate it partner
QUESTION, is there an adapter in the 5.56mm caliber that can be used in a 12 gauge shotgun ?
I've never seen one. Most 12 gauges aren't rated for the pressure of a 5.56.
Thank you for this video it answered some questions that I had ,now my only question is do they offer it in the 2.75 . I have a wards Hercules 12 gauge single shot a very good shotgun in my opinion. Thanks
amazing I absolutely love it
Yes, this is a very useful tool. Cool!

That's great to meet you. Your a very wish person do you have books on your vedioes to learn what you know. Because getting ammo is real hard to do. So learning how to make your own would be perfect. Like you said be prepared.
I looked them up. They are nice.
Cool. Interesting stuff. Thanks.
I wonder if home made black powder will work. thoughts please ???
Where can I find the measuring shell you used for the black powder?
Wished they stocked 12 ga to 22 LR (rifled) and 38 Spl (rifled). Been checking their website for years, but always out-of-stock.
Will the adapters work in an over and under shotgun?
How about a brass shotgun shells.loaded with black powder. Will the brass swell up and stick in the adapter.
I have been trying to find a 12 gauge adapter for my .410 Rossi, I am so disappointed they don't have an adapter for this gun yet!
Great explanations!! Thanks!
a single shot 20 or 12 is just a great utility gun. i have probably shot my "backdoor 20 gauge" more than any other gun i own. chasing off stuff bothering out chickens and such
