  • New Zealand's Great Walks are premier tracks that pass through diverse and spectacular scenery. From native forests, lakes and rivers. to rugged mountain peaks, deep gorges and vast valleys, from coastline to alpine...there's a Great Walk for everyone!
    The tracks are maintained to a high standard, making it easier for visitors to explore some of the most scenic parts of New Zealand's backcountry. This is Episode 1 of our Great Walks series: The Routeburn Track
    The Routeburn Track is 33 KM long from The Routeburn Shelter outside of Glenorchy, to The Divide in Fiordland. The Track is generally hiked over 3 days and can be hiked in either direction. If you are new to multi day hikes, this is a great one to work up too. The distances are easy, the terrain is not too steep and the views are fantastic.

    For me, the best parts of the track are in the alpine regions - from Routeburn Falls Hut to Mackenzie Hut (5:50 to 12:25). That's when you realise you are in a truly magical place. They did a great job of capturing much of that in this video.

    Thank you this is my favourite walk now a 74 year old have done it 3 times in my 40s with a group of ladies 50s a special friend and in my 60s with my husband. As soon as you start walking it is so special the peace, the mountains, forest etc etc etc. love the people you meet. It beats a holiday sitting around a pool. Or queuing up for your meals on a cruise. Take care you two look forward to more.

      @@rameshchaudhary8963 Our top 5 hikes in NZ so far? That is a tough one!
      In no particular order, I would say:
      - Milford Track
      - Gillespie Pass

      - Humpridge Track
      - Routeburn Track

      How long do you have in the South Island and the North Island?
      We haven't done much in the North Island besides Tongariro, but Egmont National Park looks amazing
      In the South Island there's almost too much to choose from. Staying around the Te Anau, Queenstown, Wanaka area, I would say any of the following are worth it.
      Kepler Track, Humpridge Track (some find the first day quite challenging), Breast Hill Track, Roys Peak, Isthmus Peak, Rob Roy Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Brewster Hut.

    Great video. Enjoyed the comments. I walked the Routeburn in 1990 when it was a less well developed walk . There were no Great Walk’s then. NZ has become so fashionable to walk. Would have loved to see the trail back then!
      It is understandable why NZ is so popular for walking, it is such a beautiful country. I do believe the Great Walks sometimes make it too accessible and people can take it for granted/not prepare correctly
      We started doing the Key Summit track, but we had a lot of low cloud cover and couldn't see anything, so decided to turn around. Next time!

    Well the touring twins have struck again with an absolute corker of a video. The kiwi govt should be giving you pair a really good commission on the way your promoting Kiwi land. You know something Chris your one very lucky young bugger coming to Oz and meeting up with with such an incredible shela like Dana. Mate she sticks to you like a wet Tee shirt. Crikey mate seeing a young couple enjoying all the travelling and hiking you two do together really goes past demonstrating what marriage should be, but enters into that beautiful arena of what true male/female love relationships are all about and should be cherished as such. Of course there are the cloudy periods, which is only human nature, but sharing a neutral bond and enjoying this great world of nature together really epitomises what enjoying life is all about. Your hiking videos have become better and really promote what I've said above. I wish you both the all best in health, wealth and prosperity for the future.

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We did it at the end of October about a week before the Great Walk season officially started. It wasn't very busy because it was still during Covid and international visitors were still not allowed in the country.
      I believe it's normally very busy during that time of the year, even though the Great Walk season hasn't officially started.

      For this video we used the Panasonic G9 with Leica 25mm f1.4 and Laowa 10mm f2
      We also used a GoPro 7 for some shots.
      This Great Walk definitely has the best ease of walk to views ratio.
      We can't wait for the season to start shortly, we have so much planned for this Spring/Summer!
      It's too bad the Heaphy bridge won't be fixed for quite sometime. It would be nice to be able to do that entire walk, but we may still do parts of it

    Hi guys first of all thanks for the amazing video , I booked the lake hut on December 23rd, as it was the only hit available, I'm just wondering is it possible to start from routeburn track shelter and make to lake campsite in oneday?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching 🤗 that's great you got a booking! The distances on the Routeburn are relatively short and the incline up to the falls hut not too steep by NZ standards. You also have daylight savings in play so it's light out quite late (sunset ~9pm for dec). It would be about 21 km for that first day to Mackenzie so would still recommend starting as early as possible so you can still take in all the things to see. You can probably make good time along the initial flatter section so you can take it a bit slower across the pass.

    Thank you for your wonderful videos. These have been helping me immensely while planning my hiking trip to New Zealand. I am booked to hike Routeburn Track in early March and a little worried about the part (I think Harris Saddle) that looks very exposed to altitude. I was wondering how long it takes to hike through that section and did the trail feel too narrow? I am a regular hiker but tend to get a little nervous during very exposed sections.

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the Harris Saddle is the section from Routeburn Falls Hut to the Harris Saddle Emergency Shelter. That section is wide open and very beautiful. Track is really well maintained and you won't have any issue unless some bad weather comes in, or there is snow.
      The section leaving the Emergency Shelter to Lake McKenzie Hut crosses the exposed Hollyford Face. That section is very exposed, but the track is still very well maintained and you've got the mountain to your left/back at all times for protection. We were up there when it was very windy and it was completely fine. The track never felt too narrow or sketchy.
      You'll have an absolutely wonderful time and that whole section from Routeburn Falls hut to Lake McKenzie is stunning 😊

      I'd say the only part that is a bit sketchy is where it turns to skree near the top of the Mueller Hut Route, probably wouldn't want to do that part in bad weather. Although to be honest, you probably wouldn't want to do any of that track in bad weather because it's very exposed

    Thank you for the video! Its amazing! I will be in NZ May 15-30. I have hiked the Kepler Track and am deciding on which hike I want to experience this trip. I am loving the look of the Routeburn Track. How much does it cost to stay in the huts? How many nights did you stay in the huts?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kepler is a fantastic trail! Love the ridge walking on day 2.
      I think Routeburn is equally as good, if not better. I think it's $35 per night to stay in the huts. Generally it's hiked over 3 days with 2 nights in the huts. First night would be either Routeburn Flats hut or Routeburn Falls hut and the 2nd night would be at Lake McKenzie hut. You can also link up with part of the Greenstone Caples track if you want to make it a loop. That would increase it by 1 or 2 nights

    Beautiful video and pacing. I understand the attempt at standard production in this video, but the music is actually distracting and kind of inappropriate to the entire purpose of these beautiful walks. It's essentially noise pollution on all this beauty. A bit of narration sans the music would have been perfection. Video is A+.
