An overnight hike on the Earnslaw Burn in Glenorchy, New Zealand

- Located just over an hour from Queenstown, the Earnslaw Burn Track is a very challenging day hike, or a slightly less challenging overnight hike to the Earnslaw Glacier in Mt Aspiring National Park, New Zealand. The 26km there and back trail climbs over 900m of elevation. The first 8.5km of this hike is through beautiful beech forest, before leaving the bush line and continuing a further 4.5km through the tussock valley and to the head of the glacier. The forest section is deceptively long with 500m of climb and frequent obstacles of fallen trees, landslides and creek crossings. It is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. But the pure serenity at end of the valley and getting your first glimpse of Earnslaw Glacier makes it all worth it.

I've done the Rees/Dart crossing a couple of times (once in each direction). So I've effectively circled that mountain twice, but never did the track up to the glacier. Well done, and, of course, another fantastic video, guys.
The forest section is deceptively long/hard, but well worth it. We really wanted to return in Summer to see the glacier turn into a thousand waterfalls, but never got the chance to make it happen
Have done the Kepler recently and enjoyed it. This video is very well made and gave new ideas to try. And New Zealand back-country is just gorgeous and came through nicely in the video.

Stunning... I wish I had the physical strength to do this hike. I just can't get over the beauty of Earnslaw Burn, it's so spectacular words can't do it justice! And that rainbow 😍!
I reckon you could do it if you did a bit of training and just took it easy! Doing it as an overnighter in spring/summer means you can take as long as you want with no time pressure.
I would love to go back in Summer and see all the waterfalls coming off the glacier
The beach forest is indeed gorgeous, and it is also very hard to capture that beauty with a camera. I guess people just have to go and see it for themselves ❤

Definitely a good one! Would loved to have done it in summer as well. The glacier at the end turns into 100 streaming waterfalls, which would have been stunning to see

Wow! Another amazing walk so beautifully captured - thanks again for sharing. We'll definitely investigate this one for our next Queenstown trip. Our planned December trip (Kepler & Routeburn) isn't happening due to flight cancellations so we're pining for some more NZ time. Hopefully we'll reschedule for 2022. We're so sorry to hear your NZ trip has had to be cancelled, we know that feeling all too well. You may get an opportunity in early 2022 to come over; it does sound like everything will be opening in NZ and AU. There should be lots of spots available on the Great Walks as well as there has been tons of cancellations with Auckland still in lockdown.
We just finished the Routeburn Track yesterday, which was awesome! We are doing the Kepler over Christmas.

No crampons for us. The forest section is too low for snow and the valley section is relatively flat. We didn't touch snow/ice till the very end
Really beautifully shot and edited! I live in Perth and you guys inspired me so much. I still can't believe your channel is not more popular. Your each videos needs to be seen more than millions view! Just one thing, it's probably just me so completely fine if you ignore it, to me, music of all your videos too loud and distracting. Especially in this one, in front of ice you said so quiet, but music was so loud. It would be really cool if there was no music at all on that moment. I love to hear more nature sound. Definitely something I'm working on! Still trying to find a nice balance between the music and the ambient sound. If I have them at a similar level, they kind of fight with each other and it just sounds messy. I find the music really important to our videos, so I do feature it quite a bit, but I agree, more ambient sounds makes sense.
I've recently upgraded our camera microphone, so hopefully that'll record the ambience a bit louder than our old mic

Seeing how safety conscious NZ is, I'm surprised how you had to stumble across those fallen trees, and along those rubbish track's,,and stream's,Nice video though,,Come on DOC A into G guy's,,
It is a DOC track, but it's well known that it's not really maintained by DOC all that much.
It's a tough area to get into, so I can't really fault them. It adds to the experience 😅

@@ChrisandDanya Thanks. Planning to do this with my wife and 11yo son. Not sure I'll camp overnight. Too heavy packing camping gear from Perth to Queenstown. I'll probably do a day hike and start early at dawn.
It is a great hike, but I do feel I need to heed some warnings.
It is a really hard hike, especially as a day hike. You're probably looking at ~24km with a lot of elevation gain. The forest section is long and often not cleared in places, so will be slow going.
Also keep in mind, the year we did this had a very mild winter, so not much snow around. If this year has a better winter, then you may not be able to do this until closer to the end of October.
Please make sure you check Avalanche warnings for the area before heading in 🙏

There are lots of good hikes you can do in the area if you can't tackle Earnslaw Burn
At 10.46 next to that waterfall on the left there used to be a wooden platform you could sleep on 35 years ago, it does not appear to be there Is it gone? I have heard that helicopters go there , is this true from your research?
We don't remember seeing a wooden platform to be honest! We'll have to take a look if we head up that way again
It is true helicopters head up there in Summer. They land by the glacier and guests can get out and checkout the glacier + waterfalls
I enjoyed your video. But I get confused when you use meters and kilometers in your description.
I can't understand why other countries don't use miles and feet like here in the USA which is much easier.
We used the Metric system because that is what is used in NZ where the trail is located. The Metric system is used almost world wide, while the Imperial system is mainly used by the USA

@@tomhu1745 The metric system is much easier to understand as everything is a multiple of 10. The imperial system is literally only fully used by 3 countries on the planet. USA, Liberia and Myanmar, with UK having a mix of the two.
