The saddest reality is without such a device most people would simply get bored and turn the app back on. This restriction key lockout is actually a needed tool in the modern day.

Exciting exactly this functionality I get with my Xaomi Note 7 phone in the ultra energy-saving mode although not by extra brick extern but I just have then just a few apps active that I have to choose before and the rest is all no longer possible and I find it actually quite sufficient, for that I do not need this external brick thing. But the idea itself for certain people who do not have this will to waiver a good thing.

It seems odd and redundant to have the NFC tag on the fridge when you have to click something in the app itself - it's the app that does all the work, it doesn't need the NFC "brick" at all, but it would be a good activator if it worked with the phone is in any state (such as locked) by simply tapping the brick and not interacting with the app at all.

I stave off the temptation of distracting apps by simply not installing them (and disabling most of the default apps). My phone has no games or social media apps on it.
Considering I'm the person everyone comes to for tech/software help, people are always surprised by how little I am bound to tech.
But I can see why some people would need an external switch like this, that is inconvenient to get to to disable it, in order to avoid the siren's call.

I don't know how iPhones work, as I was always an android user. However, what you are trying to do there with your iPhone is already built in in most android devices. Mine has a setting (built in the OS), called focus mode. Once you set this up, you allow calls (if you want to) and notifications only from selected apps. You can set this for a specific time and also set it that it cannot be overridden. I would imagine that something similar exists for iPhones..... why would you need a separate product for that?

This video was very different from the others you normally do (for obvious reasons). You had some great photos of LF and video of Juniefractic. Talk about streamlining comms- Brick does it easily. I think it forced you to focus on something entirely different. Imagine being a filmmaker like Steven Spielberg in 1976. Your smartphone isn't going off, there' no email in your pocket, no texts, no other distractions, so he just got the job done. Sure, we can find other distractions. (I can think of 70's stereotypical distractions that I won't mention... just watch Boogie Nights and you'll see what I mean hahaha.) I may consider Brick. I do check my comms too much while I am out.

(I have the Droid 4 also fully functional 🙂 ) updated to LiangeOS (Android 7.1.2) .. both still perfectly functional today.. the Photon Q is still my everyday phone 🤷‍♀ .... and it lives in airplane mode and silence mode 🤨 .. ...... Remember when we check emails and perhaps Mercadolibre/e-buy at the morning.. or at night.. and that was it.. that's me..... my phone live in airplane mode and silence mode all day.. until I decide to check it once or twice at day..... the only app that have permission to override silence mode is WhatsApp.. SMS and AquaMail.. any other app DO NOT have permission to "run at boot" or "run in the background"" in the Privacy Guard..... they are all off until I open them once in a while.. I guess I am my own "Brick" 🤐

  • @EliotHochberg

These seem like a cool idea, however, I noticed that you have to launch something in order to activate it, I would hope there would be a mold that you could choose were all you need to do is just tap the phone to it without having to do anything else.
The other thing that I would want to add, since there’s an app included with the tool, is someway to double tap on the brick or in this case, it would be OK to have a second tap, or be able to toggle, which thing automatically happens with the brick, and which thing you have to do an extra action for, but to literally make it, so that it is just a phone . And if you did that, have several skins that look like various phones. In this mode, you would only be able to make calls and Answer or send texts.

My life got so bad that I can't even put a SIM card in my smartphone UNLESS it's time to call in a medical prescription or speak to my one friend with a mobile phone (ONLY at the same pre-arranged time). Nobody can get a hold of me...period...and I severely restrain myself. My own lack of control over my own telephonic life necessitated these Draconian measures. I agree! While the Brick may be useful for many, I know myself well enough to admit that I might intentionally forget to use it, or find ways to bypass it. It's similar to when my parents used bitter nail polish, which ironically made me develop a liking for the taste just so I could keep biting my nails. So instead of training myself to use The Brick, I prefer to focus on training myself to reduce phone usage outright.
Nevertheless, I appreciate the availability of diverse tools that cater to different needs and preferences. It's about finding what works best for each individual, rather than forcing everyone to rely on a single tool and shaming them if it doesn't work for them, y'know?

I'm in my fifties and have been in to "tech" from the age of 14. I had several 'smart' phones long before Apple and Android appeared. But people have far too many distractions with modern phones, often consisting of inconsequential rubbish and things that they really don't need to see or do immediately. Yet they can't even be bothered to watch where they're walking. If something is important, it could be replaced by a short phone call, not a dozen messages. Otherwise it can usually wait until I'm not doing anything else. I generally switch off most notifications and check things manually. But that doesn't mean smartphones aren't useful tools too. 😉

    • @another3997
      @another3997 ปีที่แล้ว

@@espressomaticIt isn't the capabilities off the phone that are the problem, it's the fact that people are addicted to using them, even when they should be paying attention to other things. A lot of these distractions aren't so important or necessary to reply to that you need to do it whilst walking, driving, working or being with friends and family etc. Smartphones are a useful tool, but having a hammer in your hand doesn't mean you have to spend the whole day hitting things with it.

I think the idea is interesting, but I think the biggest issue is if you really needed something on your phone that you've blocked off and yet you leak the Brick at home, you're kinda screwed. Yet, if you take the Brick with you, it defeats the purpose of it in the first place.
I think it's ultimately just down to the individual to exercise their own restraint, but perhaps a tool like this might help people build up more restraint.

As mentioned they give you 5 emergency unlocks. After that you have to uninstall the app and reinstall it to reset those. So it's a pretty good balance of emergency need vs. restriction.

why you need to use nfc to activate? it`s not easier to use a button? if you want to lock by local it can use the gps. it is just a gimmick product

How about some little self control and discipline instead, that would go a long way...

Why not just do the obvious and leave your phone at home or shut it off? If you are meeting someone for lunch (etc.) why not devote that precious time to the moment you have together?

...you missed out the magnet, and 3D printed case, and shipping. We can't expect these things for free or even cost price, and it solves a real problem IMHO.

That iPhone is big, fat and expensive, waste of money when iPads exist! Throw it on the ground and put the sim in the Nokia!

I remember getting my T28s and feeling so proud of it. It was the smallest phone I had ever seen, unlike the huge ones everyone else had. I took it with me to a company event to show it off, but then I panicked when I couldn’t find it. I searched everywhere, feeling more and more frustrated. Then I realized it was in my shirt pocket all along. I felt both relieved and embarrassed. That’s how tiny the Ericsson T28s was. Marvelous times
