    Something about this video got right to my heart. I truly believe that we achieved maximum benefit from digital technology around 2006. We now live in a world of disinformation, social and emotional problems, dopamine overload, excess stress - much of which is enabled by the drive of digital technology. In the early 2000s, the internet was largely un-monetised and was more of an online community of people helping each other out. Now it is largely owned by the same 100-200 businesses. We’ve sold our lives, our communities, our ability to interact with each other for such a cheap price of a tiny bit of convenience. This video, therefore, is one of the smartest projects I’ve seen recently. I’m sold… off to research the best option for me in the U.K to work alongside my iPod, DVD player and CDs.

      Thank you for sharing your heartfelt thoughts. I completely agree that we’ve reached a tipping point with digital technology, where convenience often overshadows genuine connection and well-being. It’s inspiring to hear that this video resonated with you so deeply. The idea of pairing modern simplicity with retro tech like iPods and DVDs is fantastic. Together, we can find a balance that brings back the joy of true interaction and a sense of community. Good luck on your journey to rediscover the best of both worlds!

    There's an even simpler solution. I have a smartphone, but it's on a pre-pay account *with no mobile data*. I can only connect to the internet on wi-fi at home; once I'm outside, it's basically a dumbphone, only I have offline maps, a decent camera, most of my music collection and podcasts (again, offline, on the phone), and any other apps I find useful. As long as they work offline. Best of both worlds.

    • @RetroRecipes
      @RetroRecipes  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      That's a very interesting solution! What service provider do you use to achieve that? Likely with AT&T they force all plans to have mobile data, though I'm not 100%.

    One time I put my phone on silent and forgot. Just one or two hours! Not only did my family call me 20 times, thinking I'm dead, but they also called the police and reported me as a missing person 😂😂😂
    Strange times man. You need to be 724 online or else everybody thinks you're gone for good.

    • @Reman1975
      @Reman1975 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You should try being a grumpy sod on the phone. I started answering my personal phone with a stern "WHAT ?", in a way that implies that their call was interrupting something incredibly important....... like defusing an expl0sive device in an orphanage for disabled puppies. Or if anyone phoned after 9pm, I'd answer with "it's after 9. Someone better be dead !". The result was that people started only calling if it WAS genuinely something that couldn't wait until we saw each other next, and if I get a call at night, it's because it really IS something important.
      I used to have a boss who expected staff to be contactable 24/7, and he'd get annoyed if he wanted to talk to you about something hours after your shift ended (That 9 times out of 10 could have waited until morning) and you didn't pick up. You can only get yelled at for not leaping out of the shower or ending a call to your folks on your personal phone just so you can answer his pointless call so many times before you start to resent hearing ANY phone ring. :D
      When you think about it, a moble phone is an INCREDIBLY rude thing. You could be watching telly, talking to someone special, or fast asleep, but you're expected to instantly stop what you're doing to answer it when it starts ringing. It's the equivalent of someone coming up to you, interrupting whatever you were doing regardless of if it was convenient to stop at that point, and demanding you give them your undivided attention right then and right there. You wouldn't even put up with that sort of behaviour from a toddler more than a few times !
      These days I probably only get 10 private calls a month, and most of those are friends just phoning to arrange getting together for a chat.

    Around the year 2000, I operated a few websites and created "wap" versions of them at the same time. It was pretty typical to use "wap" instead of "www" in the domain URL to load the WAP page. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the WAP pages, but they were pretty much all antiquated by 2005 with Windows Mobile phones and then completely killed by the iPhone in 2007.

    Me and my mate have been messing around with a bunch of these phones recently for fun and I didn't realise it was so much harder in the states, good news for my old nokia over here! Personally I have always had most of my hobbies and jobs centred around computers so I have 4 monitors in front of me all the time, as a result I never actually have had a smartphone: that sounds like too much screen time to me regardless of social media (I barely have used any ever). I showed your previous video on this subject to my friend who is a relatively new parent and he is seeing a lot of benefits in terms of what you mentioned about focusing on what is important in life.
    It's probably not going to work but the next 00s phone I want to get is the nokia that had 4 led lights on the corners and it would flash in time to the ringtones in different colours, my pipe dream is that's just a midi file on there somewhere so you could make your own

    @7:26 That's why I love @TheMrMobile's "When Phones Were Fun" videos. We truly lost something. I'm amazed (but sadly, not surprised) at how spiteful and angry some people react to the sheer idea of trying to break out of this vicious cycle of 24/7 connectivity. No, it's not just "boomer nostalgia" (Perifractic and I are Gen X, thank you very much). There are more than enough studies that show there's a mental health crisis, and our current digital lifestyle is a huge part of it. This goes way deeper than "I miss my youth/childhood". Although there's nothing wrong with that either. It's perfectly fine to miss the things we used to love and that are gone now. No, not everything used to be better in the past, but everything new isn't always better either.

    There is a lot of truth around what you are saying, I am little older than you, and I can see the negative effect that so called Smart devices have had. There was a wonderment that the generation will never understand about how phones from the 90's and 00's facilitated in forwarding technology without intruding on life itself. I just recall that the first real phone I ever owned was a OEM phone from People's Phone in the UK, they were bought out by Vodafone. But I remember on the whole it being non intrusive technology and it didn't dictate life. Alas I work in Technology and I have seen how negatively these devices have marked and I genially believe they have had an effect on a generations mental abilities/health. Maybe we all need a digital detox. EE in the UK ironically now promote heavily the ability to switch off internet as sort of down time enforcement policy you can control. That I think speaks volumes. Great video as ever, and why is this channel not over a million subs. Your content exceeds that put out by commercial TV stations over here in the UK.

It had Bluetooth which I used with my PDA, but I found I preferred IrDA because you didn't have to muck about with pairing; just point & shoot. :) I had a Smartboard too; good accessory though it was funny to watch it going through characters T9 style. It was still better than today's OSKs, though not as good as operating the OSK on my Palm with a stylus.
