It's a real goal of ours to get as many 'human productive' plants as possible to the point of being naturalized in our landscape. When your "weeds" are largely desirable, productive plants, I feel like that's winning the game ;)

Yes I would love to see more of the garden! Garden tours are one of my favorite things to watch. I get so many ideas and inspiration from others!
I planted no squash this year but the compost has delivered a bounty of butternut and spaghetti squash.
A lot of my current sized tomatoes and all of my mustard come from volunteers as well.
I am looking forward to the day when my seedbank is as saturated with food plants as yours is!

If you like capers, try making nasturtium seed pickles.😋 Only use seed clusters that won’t fall off stem when tugged on, otherwise the pickles will be woody. 💖
I've always enjoyed your calm and meditative voice regardless of the subject and today i became conscious of the fact that after "walking" around your garden with you how much your garden color, sound, shape and relationship are linked to that quality.

Absolutely love your wanders. Get inspired by the productive but natural feel of your spaces. Also love the nuggets of insight and thought processes you drop as you wander.
Your back will thank you some years from now for raising those beds. Go higher if possible.
Lost track of which squash plants wer in which containers but seeing the coloration on the desakota leaves gives me a clue.

We have done a number of ice creams from our garden. Parsley, Basil, and Mint. Have also done a few tea ice creams that turn out great. Next up for us is Saskatoon berry. Happy to share the recipes. I will tell you Basil seems strange but is the best taste ever!
I get a good chuckle from the chickens running through their little jungle, acting out their dinosaur ancestors ancient hunting rituals

I'm catching up on comments this morning with a wall of rain outside. From dry to overabundant pretty darn quickly!

volunteer trees are often the healthiest, we let whatever turn up wherever it wants and scored several lovely fruit trees, lots of silver birch, a massive feral apple, and a giant peppercorn. we sell cut foliage and flowers to florists so almost every surprise tree has been very welcome! The apple branches and blossoms/fruit have decorated about 20 weddings over the last few years and it still looks barely touched at 20 odd foot tall.
"All Volunteers". IMO, when a permaculture system is in full swing, I imagine being part of the system in just deciding what volunteers I let/encourage to grow!
That is what these systems can trend towards it seems

I was curious how your squash plantings at the larger property were doing… if I remember right you were planting a lot of them into piles of compost in somewhat shaded areas near trees and bushes they could climb.
Thanks for remembering. That site just didn't get nearly enough water early in the season when the squash were getting established and they are alive but will only slightly generate a crop I suspect

You should consider selling buckets of your seed-laden compost! I would certainly like to introduce this mix of volunteers to my garden...
Except when someone gives us $20 and dumps out the compost and it's a sea of poke root! Certainly a nice wide mix of possibility!
I think I saw a few sizeable tulipoplar or sassafras trees in the beds. Will you let them stay there?
Great question, I thought the same thing!
I have a lot of similar volunteers in my land scape, and I try to transplant them once they become too large.
If they are too entrenched, I cut them back hard, and feed the cuttings back to the land.
Shawn may be more accommodating to them, he has a gentle touch with living beings.

We FINALLY got some rain so am tempted to just sow out a bunch of seeds all over spare bed space similar to how you have. Problem is, maybe it's a climate thing, but young seedlings just get destroyed by bugs, birds, I don't know what, but they love the young leaves, it's very hard to plant from seed round here, but growing starts and transplanting is such a drag, maybe I will just go for quantity and hope something survives. Got loads of brassica and other seeds that want using up anyway

We plan to cut the Tulip and other trees back pretty hard as needed to keep them manageable and available for trellising
Just had a question on the carrot variety, are they Nantes, Chantenay's, Imperators? Just planted Nantes that mature 60ish days, and I'm worried once I hit winter that if I plant Chantenay carrots, which can take upwards to 80-90 days to mature, that they won't be able to grow at all. 💚

I enjoy your updates...I watch them all if I can. I am in northeast Wisconsin, and I am trying to get more ameranth to grow so I can seed more in various places, any tips for this? Would you be willing to sell me some seeds? Right now I am growing red garnet

Where can you get seed for small farming. Rather than packets.
Fedco Seeds has larger packets of seed up to a pound for certain things. Johnnys seeds has that for sure, lots of options.

Ha! Well, financially we'd never ever remotely approach his place. But thankfully having a vital and diverse sea of living allies around you certainly begets more actual wealth than possessing money, so yeah, I think we're wealthier!

The idea of our videos offering a feeling of peace while quietly nudging to go for it is basically the founding principle I work from. Reading your experience helps me feel like the videos are doing what they are meant to do is rad. We can skip the jealousy aspect though, I'd rather just think of us all in a huge community with our own focus and strength and areas we specialize in sharing as we go..
When you go to your maker (not wishing it on you yet) I'm tipping you'll be offered the managers job in the Garden of Eden.
