Your original guild tours (feels like maybe 4 years ago?) are the videos that made me go: "I'm going to do this here". There's just something so fun about them.
I really enjoy you coming back to this space here, because it's almost like seeing a long time friend at a high school reunion. Your guilds just inspired so much passion in me, and that passion has burned like the sun for 4 years now and has completely transformed my life and my land. Please revisit these spaces and do a video like this each year. I adore this property and love to see it develop and change.

I was so excited this year to finally able to add nut trees into our context here in the subtropics. I swear I am part squirrel because seeing all those nut trees lights up my brain: "security! Fat! Protein! Collect all the little treasures!"

If I can offer one piece of advice on this - I'm sure Sean will back me up here... don't sweat the details. There's very few ways your guilds will go wrong.
When I first started this, I was kind of where you are - thinking I had to discover and unlock the perfect combinations before I started. That's massive paralyzer. There's no perfect combo, they all are. What matters most is the shape of the plants, and just trying to cram them together as best as they can fit. Almost everything will play nicely together, baring a few exceptions (juglans being the most notable one). However it's far worse to lose years by not planting while you try to figure out the optimum combo. Understand that there's really not an optimal combo and that almost no matter what you end up doing, it will work fantastic.

Missed this one before, just watching now as I am setting up some guilds in my existing orchard so wondering how it will work adding lower-storey plants after the fact. But it cracks me up how you always know which compass directions things lie in. "There's my wife, over to the north-east and, oh, where are my pruners? Oh, there they are, just due south-south-west of here, next to me on the bench".

I loved this and would always enjoy hearing more! I binge watched all of your guild videos last year and learned so much! I especially appreciated your encouragement not to frantically write the guilds down. That’s what I would have been doing last year, but your videos have made me much more confident in experimenting with what I have available and growing well rather than spending a lot of time and money duplicating someone else’s setup. Thank you!

I've been working on grafting multiple varieties of pears on to callery pear "weed" trees. Now that the grafts are taking, I'm going about mulching and then establishing the guilds around the trees. I'm having fun building top soil and guilds at the same time.

Yes this is fantastic! The in depth walk arounds explaining the plant’s purpose within the guild and showing examples of groupings is great. We just bought a forest in southern Ontario that we are going to build our homestead on so I am new to this. I’m hoping to begin planting in the fall but don’t really know where to start. I guess one guild at a time! I don’t want to fall prey to analysis paralysis so my plan is to just start putting things in the ground and learning from the outcomes. Your videos have given my the confidence to do this and not be so afraid of failing.

Inspiring. I'm in North Wales UK with a long, narrow (around 12 foot wide) sloping slate terraced dry syone walled garden with a sunny south facing edge and a shaded north facing edge. I am implementing some of the same ideas with many of the same species (apart from pawpaw, which I am having difficulty sourcing). I will continue to be inspired from your ideas on guilds and look forward to your other posts.

Love this video! Got here from reading mycelium running and being fascinated by the mutual relationships between garden giants and other fungi, and various food crops. Anything else having to do with synergy between different plants, fungi, or both, would be an instant thumbs up from me!

    • @debbiehenri345
      @debbiehenri345 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I really enjoyed the 'Mycelium Running' book too. Really made me think about what I was doing in the garden.
I'm not sure if the fungi forms 'Deceivers' and 'Amethyst Deceivers' grow wild in your country, but I did find them the easiest ones to grow from 'stubs' after I foraged for them in my local (Scottish) forests. Now they pop up around the garden without any help from me; and where they grow, the plants do well.
I do find it quite difficult to raise mushrooms from spawn and inoculated dowels, because I live in an area that is heavy with natural spores from a mass of different fungi species. Usually, all trees are already inoculated by the time they are seedlings. So transplanting stubs is the best way to start for me.

Great video and let’s not forget one of if not the biggest producer of fruit trees Dave Wilson nursery recommend backyard orchards to do three in one tree planting. Planting three trees of like variety has many benefits like space saving, smaller manageable trees, extending the fruiting season with early ripening thur late ripening being a few. Really like what your doing and only adding to the question shouldn’t trees be spaced. Have a wonderful spring cheers

I really appreciate this video because if you just look at guides or pictures of tree guilds, there are often 5+ species - helpful for illustrative purposes but I was intimidated thinking that you needed "every" aspect of a tree guild. Starting off by planting two or three beneficial plants together is much more manageable especially for a beginner.

The main trouble I have with guilds is creating them _ex nihilo_. So often a Permaculture book will talk about guilds with no description of how you get there in terms of which plants to put together. "Plant stuff together and see what happens" is at best a LONG term strategy, fraught with failures. This is why your videos are so great, and why we need more people doing the same. We need recipe books for guilds before they are useful to most growers.

I hear you. To be honest, many many of these guilds are simply experiments set in motion years ago, adjusted a bit here or there and for the most part a lot of plants get along with one another. Always worth trying I think.

Thanks for the great info on guilds, I'm about to plant my first ones with a plum and apples so I'm very interested. Also appreciate the info about juglone tolerant plants as I have 10! Have a great day!

Perfect timing! I'll be planting out this new homes first guilds this month and next month, and getting this kind of reminder / inspiration is exactly what i would hope to see :D I have to set up some guilds to include cherrys, pawpaws, black & honey locusts, high bush cranberries, raspberries, gooseberries, currants, strawberries, rhubarb, roman chamomile, and tons of perennial flower varieties... I have all kinds of information, and no idea what I'm doing.... but it wont stop me from putting things in the ground :D

So many of these guilds were just playful experiments that seem to have proven healthy and beneficial. Go for it!

@@edibleacres I think your success comes more from sailing with nature at the helm, and not in the brig :) I'll plot a course with what I plant, but it's nature who will decide if we end up there hah! it's why I love your content, you do really well guiding nature to destinations that benefit both

I'd love to know what other trees would substitute for your pawpaw, shade-loving when young but more sun-loving when the other tree dies. This whole video was so helpful. Thank you!
