Just a headsup incase you dont know, Ultrasonic baths should ALWAYS be filled to their minimum fill lines, if you dont you'll burnout the transducers pretty quick, if you dont want to fill the bath with chemical/alcohol then fill it with water and get a ziplock bag or small shallow container and put your chemicals and boards in that.
Glad I found this channel. Its giving me the motivation to dig back into my 1.6 Xbox and finish it. I have deleted the DVD, replaced both heatsinks with low profile copper heatsinks and fans, and deleted the IDE cable to my SATA adapter by a right angle female to female adapter I made out of GPIO headers so the SATA adapter can come directly off of the board and gets its power from the DVD power adapter. I also have an ATX power adapter for it so I replaced the OG PSU with a 160 watt Pico PSU. All I have left is to install the Project Stellar HDMI mod.
Thanks for being so thorough. Very informative about the different ways. I really want to get a hot air station now and start practicing. I've only worked with hole component boards on honda's
Nice video as usual! I always remove the existing solder on the pads and use an iron from the start to attach (option 2). You can get pretty precise with the amount of solder to reduce bridging and cleanup time.
Am I crazy thinking he's just explaining this to the one other person on the planet that's going to do this, but they haven't met yet? Relaxing to watch, though. Soldering is like magic.
Excellent video, very well explained but I was very surprised by the CPU change. was excellent to see an increase in memory on PS2, I have not seen anyone doing something like that
awsome video as always :D i think in the next one you should do the tool time tune and wear flanel an say "today on tool time" or somthing hehe, that would be awsome :D
@RetroRenegadeRepairs thank you very much! Excited to give this a try. I hope to get as good as you someday! Killing it with the drag soldering and removal of bridges. Super smooth!
Also one more question. Do you mind sharing the microscope arm you're using? I'm currently searching the web for one and your microscope looks similar to my High Cloud one.
I got a question for you! So for your 1.0-1.5 capacitor replacement service, does that include an ultrasonic cleaning of the board/remove any rust/corrosion? I'm 100% going with you for my 1.0, I'm just curious to know what exactly I'll need to purchase.
Do you think you could add the paste on before placing the chip? I wonder if that would help to prevent the chip from sliding around while applying the paste. I also wonder if you can spread the solder paste onto another surface, dip the ram chip legs into it, then place it. IDK if that would work, just spitballing here haha.
@@RetroRenegadeRepairs It was when I was going over it with the soldering braid. I was trying to slowly slide it across the pads but several of them got partially ripped from the board
After weeks of waiting finally got one v 1.0 console, pretty good shape and no damage due death capacitor leak. I got a cheap v 1.6B I purchased it for spares and that Hitachi DVD metal case. System doesn't boot, frags even after cleaning, writing new EEPROM and recap, was with moderate water damage by the way. The question is, I can use the Hynix memory chips from this board to install on the v 1.0 to upgrade RAM or I need the Samsung ones?
Digital Foundry brought me here, instantly subbed
Me too 😊
Same here!
Same, and so glad to be here!
Hot Air method FTW! Also, when i did this install I would boot into xblast after each ram chip install to test before I moved on to the next chip!
I also recommend testing with xblast after each chip installation.

I was under the impression you couldn’t put a board in an ultrasonic cleaner with the electrolytic caps in place!! Good to know I was wrong!!! THANKS
Yea, I thought so too, but I and many others have not had any problems.

Sounds like that will be an amazing system once done

You made the hot air method look fast and efficient.
Its honestly the only quick confident way to do it.
Bro!!! You were featured on Digital Foundry. Its about time! I think they want one of your modded xboxes.
I have reached out to them, but nothing so far and its been about a week!

I performed this upgrade on my 1.0 xbox only a few days ago so I may be that other one person, doubt it though. There's probably quite a few of us :)
"Ya I don't know what to tell you I'm lazy" lol I like the honesty. Just found the channel you got my sub.
Another awesome video 👏i see you touching a classic xbox, i like!
Thank you for watching!
I discovered you through digital foundry and I've been doing a bit of a marathon, love the videos!

cool to see DF mention you. good video dude!!!!!
I really like the videos, and also the way you express yourself... lol...
Great work !!
Digital foundry gang in here 😄 great video new sub here 👋
The Latino Louis Rossmann minus all the narcissism and shit-talking. I think I'm gonna like it here.

Amazing, just amazing! Any chance you can do a PS2 and PS3 Ram upgrade ?
Gut job man.
Do you mind sharing the STL for the bracket when working on the bottom side? Amazing video!

nice work bro
Thanks
please OG XBOX 128mb + processor upgrade
That is mostly for homebrew.
I wouldn't bother.
looks insane to do. YOu gotta put homebrew software so i hear. Maybe. IDK.

In most cases the board is cleaned in the ultrasonic tank. I dislike working on a board that's all sticky with flux.
@@RetroRenegadeRepairs In hindsight a bit of a dumb question lol, thank you for the reply. I'll be sending in my system very soon!
isnt that bad for the ultrasonic cleaner to be run lower than intended?

You could, but it's quite a bit of pads. It'd be easier if I had a stencil to use as a guide when applying the paste.
are you using water during the ultrasonic cleaning process ?
Alcohol
When you are desoldering the pads are you putting any pressure on them? I wrecked the pads on my first try I’m looking for tips lol
I try not to apply much pressure. Is that happening when you clean the pads or when you're soldering the RAM legs?
@@RetroRenegadeRepairs It was when I was going over it with the soldering braid. I was trying to slowly slide it across the pads but several of them got partially ripped from the board

Why remove the original solder if you're using an iron?
Why didn't you replaced the lead free with leaded solder before using hot air?
I didn't feel the need and it was more so just to show the many ways the RAM upgrade can be done.
One nice bath , nice 👍
nice
se le puede hacer upgrade a la GPU?
Just so you know, I knew of RRR before DF and therefore I am superior.
This channel is awesome its funny, retro based, skilled and based on tech what do you want more😂

You need to try on 1.6 board
I did long ago. th-cam.com/video/NSnUe6yzxw0/w-d-xo.html
You wanna impress me? Explain to me why the Xbox emulator doesn't work, even though it's just a Pentium 2 PC with DirectX games.
HMU when the 512mb mod comes out
Imagine if.... they didn't gimp the xbox from the factory.
NEXT is "256mb ram??" Im wait "512MB ram" ha ha ha
hey bro tenho um desafio colocar 512 Mb ram
