I'm not saying I'd like to shake hands with a scammer, but he used very good soft skills. There was no tension at all during the interaction. And I say this because I'd have been a total caveman to the unscrupulous scammer. Sometimes I think I just don't know how to deal with people, so I have a lot of respect for this tourist.

She seemed like it quite a bit as she wanted to stop talking about it and denied that paying €5 counted as getting scammed. So he talks to the scammer and he ends up not paying him anything. Good job, right? No.
3:15 "I gave him 5" This is why you, as a man, need to stick to your female traveling companions (friend, girlfriend, wife, family, whatever) because they are more vulnerable to this crap. As a guy you can always just punch him in the face or rely on the fact that they couldn't physically overpower you. And that's what these scams are really about. It's about body language and the subliminal threat of physical violence (which would never happen because these scammers want nothing to do with the cops). They move closer to you and they grab your arm and they try to push things into your hands and that kind of behavior is very scary for a lot of women.

I have certainly had to deal with my fair share of beggars and scammers travelling in Europe but this particular scam brings back memories of exact same scam I experienced in Monastiraki square in Athens , peddled by a group of about six guys who were 'working' the square as a team . Sat down on bench , immediately one guy was on me asking where I was from etc , and before I knew it he had my wrist and began wrapping the cord around it . Soon as he was done his friendly tone evaporated and he simply said : five euro's . Argument ensued , I began walking away , he keeps demanding money , I give him a euro (what a waste) and walk away very fast . Lesson learned . Never engage , never stop for them , keep walking , or get up quickly and walk away , and stay vigilant always.

It gives you thinking time and a signal of danger to yourself so you automatically go on alert. 3. Everyone looks and you can get help. If you’re a bit isolated, just keep making the noise. Just as I am walking right next to the guy he tried to grab my wrist so I jerked my arm away strongly and just kept walking without looking back. It was really uncomfortable that even though you are ignoring them and walking straight they still try to grab you without your permission. It put me in a bad mood for a while after that. Much of this never happened 20 years ago. With much of the illegal economic migrants, Paris is no longer Paris.

I'd rather be pick pocketed... robbery is less insulting than being scammed.

I always say no to people approaching me on the streets, it's always some kind of scam, I do give money now and again but not people that ask for money but the odd homeless person or someone that has a real need

I visited Paris first time couple years ago and this same thing happened to me and my friends. I had the same conversation about lion king, hakuna matata and where i am from. They were so kind and you get this really friendly atmosphere but when they are done and asks for money it gets scary and they try to stop you from leaving. I said that I didn't want the bracelet and i was surrounded by three men and it was getting uncomfortable so i just asked them to cut the bracelet and let me leave so they did. I was 20 years old girl and traveling for the first time without my parents so yeah i felt intimidated by that. Couple days later i was scammed by polaroid photographer near Louvre museum... the pictures were really bad and i was stupid to open my wallet in front of him so he took the money and gave two pictures. Some people would have asked the money back but i was just too scared to do anything.

This is what judgmental men don’t see, that it can be an intimidating and even frightening for women, especially young one women. Their intimidation is meant.

I got scammed back in summer 2019 exactly at this tourist place, only the other side of the stairs. The scammer grabbed my hand and did exactly like they did in this video. I was so confused and went along with their games, didn't realize that it was a scam. And in the end other scammer came and I was surrounded by them and point me their wallet, there was only 20 euros cash in my wallet and they took it. And scattered afterwards

You risk it getting physical by not paying though. Better to just walk away.

Christ! in highschool I went to Paris with my family and that same thing happened. Except instead of nail clippers they used a knife and they threatened us with them. Took all my families money. My sister speaks fluent French and asked the police that were right besides us, and the police said “we can’t do anything about it”

This happened to me in Rome they are everywhere there, very intimidating and persistent. They often say are you African just to get your attention. We found out now to just keep walking look at something else and pretend you've not seen them. They get the message.
