      Right! I don't live in the city anymore, but about seventeen years ago I got onto the M14 Crosstown bus and a woman instead of my friend was behind me. I had his transfer on my MetroCard and the woman tried to ride on my card. I sat down on the single seats as you know NY City buses on the left side and I caught the bus driver looking at me as he said my friend needed to pay his fare because he got on and took the seat behind me. I yelled up to the bus driver he, not she was with me and that she needed to pay her fare which she eventually did. I muttered out loud "She thinks I'm a tourist" and the woman in front of me burst out laughing.

After they sign it personally to you, they will then ask you for a donation. You will feel compelled to give them money because they already put your name on it. A few tips I'd like to give as a New Yorker:
    1. Don't stand in the middle of ANY sidewalk
    2. Try and take the subway to get places (yes it may be crowded sometimes but everyone should experience the New York Subway plus taxis cost a lot!)
    3. Don't just visit Manhattan. Visit the bronx, queens, and brooklyn!
    4. Don't feel the need to give ANY panhandlers ANYTHING! There are too many! and don't feel intimidated!
    5. You should try walking all over manhattan instead of taking transportation. You will find a lot of cool places to shop or eat or have fun in!

    • @vangrails
      @vangrails 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't understand this. Chain restaurants offer the same quality everywhere, I assume that the chain restaurants in Leicester square are just as good as the chain restaurants in places that see very few visitors. These chain restaurants still have a reputation to lose and they have standardised everything including quality control.
      It is the mom and pop restaurants in crowded places that offer bad quality because they know that they will always be busy.
      I would never eat at a mom and pop restaurant at Leicester Square, I would opt for a chain restaurant at Leicester Square or eat at a mom and pop restaurant in a less crowded place.

    • @Watfordfc2030
      @Watfordfc2030 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      vangrails completely disagree but it’s opinions , i find chain restaurants in tourist areas pretty awful from my experience and for you to say you don’t understand this lol London New York has massive tourists visiting so they don’t have to worry so much as a small family run business because there turnover of customers is huge . Private run restaurants etc not all but most will go that extra mile to give you better service and experience. And if you think a chain restaurant in London or New York will give you the same standard as a non tourist area then I don’t know where you have been hiding

    As a native New Yorker I'd like to add to the good advice that was given in the video above. When it comes to those gift shops at Time Square I totally agree. They can charge for something as simple as postcards like $7 or $8 per card. But if you merely walk just 4 or 5 blocks south you can find gift shops where you can buy 10 postcards for only $1. It's perfect for those who don't want to travel far but don't want to spend an arm and leg for some souvenir for Aunt Sally. Plus don't buy a bottle of water from any venue in Time Square unless you pick it up from the cooler at a newsstand. Bottles of waters can cost $5 or more at tourist areas but when you go to a newsstand and pick the ones in a cooler box it will cost only $1. When I go to the movies near Time Square I make sure to buy my water from the newsstand and never at the theater itself. Bottles of waters in the theater are $4 to $6 each depending on the theater. Talking about theaters, though I don't know why you would travel all the way to NYC to see a movie that you can see in your home town but if you must then I suggest you go to an AMC theater on a Tuesday when admission is a mere $5. There is an AMC just off of Time Square at 8th Ave and 42nd St.

He offered all this information absolutely free and when it was over he had $100 (much more than the basic fare) from me and it was some of the best money I've ever spent on vacation. The Staten Island ferry is the best trip in NYC. They do make you get off at the SI side and there are a few worthy restaurants, but you can just get back on the next ferry.
    When I was a kid and you wanted to visit the Statue of Liberty it was a buck for the ferry and access to the Statue.
    As for Central Park, take a cab or the subway up to about 100th, enter the park and wander back downtown. It's worth every footstep.

  • @RogueLancer

    Nice video, liked. I moved from Alabama to Manhattan in 2010, and moved back right before 2012. These are some good tips. However there are some others I'd include:
    1. Don't be overly nice and helpful. People are quick to take advantage of that. At the same time, others don't like people doing things for them. I was raised with southern hospitality. So imagine my surprise when I get cussed out for holding the door open for a woman entering the mall.
    2. If you are a smoker, don't buy cigarettes in NYC. Back in 2011 a carton of cigarettes ran around $120. Where as if you simply take a taxi or walk to NJ, you'll find the prices of them drop by 30%.
    3. To elaborate on China Town: It's 50/50 spot. You can get tourist merch cheaper sure but, you can also get scammed out of literally everything. To those of you who want a good deal, look for shops that aren't parading themselves outside for you to come in or drawing too much attention to themselves with signs and lights. Additionally, if you find yourself in one of these shops that have knock off brands, wait around the shop for at least 15 minutes. There's a strong possibility that the fakes are a front. I've been in many stores like this. The owner will approach the people who stay long enough and tell them to follow he/she to a corner or wall in their shop. Then they will reveal a hidden room with the real brands, at almost 90% of retail price. Obviously they did some sketchy stuff to obtain these things but, it's there, so make the best of it.
    4. Men, keep your wallet in your front pocket. This is the city that never sleeps. I drove my car there, but never drove it again until I moved again. This means you'll always be in crowded places. Walking 2 miles is not unusual, and taking the train is the easiest way to travel. You know someone is a tourist if they keep their wallet visible or in their back pockets. There are often many people that will "bump" into you on a train, and continue to apologize while another person takes your belongings. For women: keep your purse in front of you until you are off the train, and out of the station. I've seen this also happen to women who keep their purses on their shoulders.
    5. BE CONFIDENT. What would seem like a high-school fight about to bust out to most of us Americans, is how most New Yorkers will talk to each other daily. There isn't a filter. Nothing is sugar coated. Say what you mean, tell the truth, and say it loudly or you will never be heard or respected. Not doing so will lead others on the street to take notice, and try to take advantage of you somehow.
    There are so many other things I could add, places to avoid, or how to know what kind of people are trouble makers. How to react to police, homeless people, streets to avoid, bridges you shouldn't walk near on your path, how to taxi pool, going to movie theaters, etc. The list goes on and on. NYC is truly like another country. I could type an essay on things to do and not to do but, I think I'm already getting pretty close to that with this comment. I hope this helps out a little. People who live in NYC know what I'm talking about. Feel free to add things on in a reply because I can't sit here for 2 hours and type it all out.

    As a kid born in the bronx and practically raised in queens, I personally remember(ps love the vid)-
    -Never go to the south bronx
    -Chinatown may seem small, but you dont want to be there at rush hour.
    -If someone talks to you in a foreign language and they look older, just nod, smile and be respectful.
    -(Patricias in the bronx is top tier Italian food)
    -Bagel shops are the best
    -keep your eyes straight and dont talk to those who try to get your attention
    -Beggars arent real most of the time, just say no when they ask for money.
    -I personally think its important to be able to understand a thick NYC accent and the different kinds.

Not for nothing but, if you do go to NYC for a few days PLEASE visit some parts of Brooklyn. Take the F train (when I was a youngster the subway cost 15 cents) from the city for some great views as it's elevated into Brooklyn. Change at 9th st/ 4th ave for the local (R train) to 95th street. Some great spots are Greenwood Cemetery, Bliss park, the gingerbread house, NYC Transit Museum, John Paul Jones park (aka: cannonball park), the house used in TV show Blue Bloods is near Ft. Hamilton high school (I went to John Jay) and check out Coney Island. I ain't gotta describe these places, google them. Have a great time, don't get suckered or scammed. Fuhgeddaboudit!

Literally hooked my arm and pulled me in. I tried to pull away but he held tight. It was a hilarious experience, but be careful out there.
    Edit: my friends started taking photos and he started smiling at the camera as well. It's just what the costumed guys do

I had run out of money and a Turkish family wanted me to work for them basically for free but the perk was I got to stay at their house like forever. It just did not seem like a good deal to me. Turkish guy actually gave me a hundred American dollars can I use my AmEx to get the flop out of dodge. Turkey is a beautiful country I will say that.

    Great, great, advice, Jon! I used to always warn my friends about some scams that I was aware of. Back then it was at airports, trains, or bus stations. Someone asking you if you needed a cab. You think it’s the cab driver, but it isn’t. He helps you with your bags to a cab and then charges you for getting the cab and carrying your bags.

He just kept following asking me how i was gonna disrespect him and not shake his hand but i refused and told him he could follow me all he wants but i wasn't going to. In NYC if you walk far enough, especially near Times Square, you will find a cop if needed.

    We went into an Irish bar near Time Square. Sign said “Happy hour, wine 7 dollars a glass” . We had 2 glasses each. The waitress asked myself and my wife what type of wine we would like and we said Merlot. The bill came to 48 dollars. When I said that it should be 28 dollars I was told that Merlot is not on the “ happy hour list”. I think that I would have gotten this reply regardless of the type of wine that we ordered 😟

    • @coindorni
      @coindorni 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You would've got the same answer regardless what you'd chosen because they don't specify what kind of wine is the 7$ one. So whichever you choose they'd say it's not the 7$ one.

    Catch the southbound subway to Brooklyn. Get off at Clark st. Then walk down to the waterfront just after dark. It is jaw dropping ! Then up onto the bridge pedestrian walkway and just stroll across back to Manhattan - again; unbelievable. Its a must do !
