  • Welcome to another FlightDeck2Sim Tutorial, how to Takeoff safely in the 737!
    Join me in Tenerife (GCTS) at the holding point for RWY 08 before we fly the ARACO 4E departure following real world procedures. This tutorial contains detailed explanation of PF/PM responsibilities during departure, configuration changes and speeds to be flown on a typical SID. Any questions feel free to comment!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    All guidance in my tutorials are based on operating procedures from a UK operator, I have almost 4000 hours on the 737-800 (The real one) and I'm also a full-time TRI working in a full motion Level D simulator.
    I plan to make many more videos in the future so if you'd like me to recreate or explain any procedure please feel free to contact me or leave a comment on my channel.
    The aim of this channel is to provide realistic, informative and useful information to help you enhance your flight simulation experience by following me apply real world operating procedures in the PMDG NGX.

      Hi just thought of something. It is not uncommon at airports with long runways to offer the crew a shorter take off from one of the intersections. I guess this potentially saves some taxi fuel and time. So, as you have excellently described in this tutorial, say we have planned our take off at Munich, and whilst taxing to the HP, we are are offered a shorter take off. How can you quickly calculate if there is sufficient runway length? Would you decline and go for the planned full length? Keith

    I'm a captain with a major European airline. I'm actually quite amazed that you use the autopilot so early. I don't use it before 10,000ft and sometimes 15,000ft depending on conditions. Automation is killing pilots skills and to use it so early in a flight is such a shame. But some airlines have such procedures. But you certainly know your procedures.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Paul, yes a frequent debate and I guess you're not a child of the magenta line!!
      For this tutorial I followed SOP which, like most airlines and I'm guessing yours, is 1000ft for A/P engagement. You'll be pleased to know at my current outfit they fully recognise Hand Flying as a required skill and having due consideration to workload and external conditions, crew can hand fly the aircraft below FL245
      From instructing in the sim and re-currency training every opportunity is given to manually fly approaches with and without flight directors and multiple UPRT exercises. From the last 2 years in the sim I generally find new cadets are very good at flying raw data approaches and visual approaches without flight directors, mixed results from more experienced pilots and OCC guys who flew the bus! Most seem to get the aircraft safely on the deck with failures which result in total loss of automation (Dual Engine Failures/Total Loss of AC/Manual Reversion etc) and I'd be confident that most of my colleagues could do the same thing.

      Hi Yo!
      That's a very common issue, you're not alone! Millions of people suffer anxiety when flying. Certainly in the UK several operators run fear of flying courses to reassure you before you try a flight yourself, you should see if an airline in your country runs a similar program!

    Terrific information Captain, thanks so much for your time and effort producing this video. One question from new simmer: if I select TOGA in the sim, since I don’t actually have an auto throttle mechanism, do I manually set my sim throttles as well as pushing TOGA? And isn’t there an auto N1 reduction at a certain altitude; if so do I need to manually set my sim throttles to match setting in the program? Kind of confusing to a newbie. Again outstanding video, thanks again.

      Thanks for the comment! My next tutorial will be on how to fly a NPA using VNAV so you're in luck! It will have to be onto RWY 03 as flying either VOR A or B onto RWY 21 requires the use of V/S due to terrain, it's a very challenging approach!

    • @ManchesterAviation
      @ManchesterAviation 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      flightdeck2sim Brilliant! Would you always use VNAV for a NPA or V/S sometimes too?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Two ways of flying a NPA approach in my company, VNAV or V/S (I have no idea about IAN approaches, not approved to fly).
      I've flown commercially for 5 years and in all that time I've completed just one V/S approach and guess what, It was RW21 into ACE! V/S use to be the norm but now with most our destinations having at least a NPA approach with the information coded in the FMC it's rarely flown.
      VNAV significantly reduces workload and increases efficiency as the descent path is managed by the FMC and is based on an idle thrust descent. V/S has a lot of threats as the PF has to manage the descent rate of the aircraft manually, it also requires a level segment before the FAF before commencing the descent.
      I'm planning on providing tutorials for both in the future so keep a good look out!

    • @ManchesterAviation
      @ManchesterAviation 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      flightdeck2sim Thanks for that! I flew the VOR RWY 21 with EZY in November, it certainly is an interesting approach!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not too sure how it's done in the scarebus! The approach is flown to a circling minima and then hand flown between the two hills before the threshold. On most approaches we configure at 4nm in VMC. Our guidance has us to fully configure with the landing flap at 9nm onto RWY 21! We use LNAV and V/S to the minima and turn to the runway at 3.0nm manually.

    Another fabulous tutorial. Quite intense but that’s ok as one can simply watch it several times ! Well structured with the introduction clearly covering the scope of the tutorial. Having read the PMDG FCTM, it seems as though you follow the takeoff procedures for the older FMC versions 10.7 and earlier? I assume this is your company’s SOP. For versions 10.8 or later, VNAV is used from takeoff without the ‘bug up’ manual speed intervention to the flaps up speed during the acceleration phase. You also only engage VNAV at 3000 ft AGL. Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.

      N1 engages at the thrust reduction altitude (Defaulted to 1500ft based on my operators SOP's and you can change on Takeoff Page 2 of the FMC) it will command N1 and the A/T schedule will change from T/O to CLB power.

    Hi! Your videos helped me a lot understanding Boeing systems in general. I usaly fly bigger planes im Fsx, the Captain Sim 767 family mostly. I do a different method in takeoff, i am curious about it is it plain lazy or wrong idea? So after programming the fmc and configuring the plane for takeoff, i set the speed to V2 + 20 knots, because the manual says maintain speed V2 + 15-25 after takeoff, so 20 is the average. I preselect VNAV and LNAV, and arm the AT. I rew up the engines to 50% N1, then hit the ECPR button to reach the takeoff N1 calculated by the FMC. Reaching VR, i pitch up for 7 degrees, after positive rate gear up, pitch up for 15 degrees and hit speed hold. 700 feet AGL i engage the AP.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Scorpius, thanks a lot! I'm glad my tutorials help!
      After calculating the take off performance we set V2 (Also known as Take Off Safety Speed) which is the speed we will meet after take off at the screen height (35ft) at the end of the runway in which we can maintain directional control and sufficient climb performance in the event of an engine failure. It gives us the best single engine angle of climb and we maintain this speed if we've had an engine failure after departure and we are maneuvering to keep clear of terrain
      It's important to note that even though V2 is set the F/D's might not necessarily be commanding that speed.
      For two engines the F/D will pitch for approximately V2 + 20, In the event of an engine failure the F/D's will command a speed inbetween V2 + V2+20 dependent on what speed the engine failure occurs.
      I'm not too sure how it works for the larger Boeing jets, it wouldn't surprise if it was quite similar!
      I hope that makes sense!

    This is the video I watch repeatedly to learn how to take off. I really appreciate your effort.
    Although the video is very comprehensive, I still have some questions, which I hope you can help me with. First, at VR, should we first rotate to 8-10 degrees nose up and confirm lifting off the runway before going further up for 15 degrees (or to reach a verticle speed ~2500fpm)? I don't know if that step is necessary to prevent a tail strike in a fully-loaded and high-temperature situation.
    The second question: between 0 and 1000ft RA (i.e. after lift off and before the acceleration height), what will be my best action in case the IAS drops below VR but still above the red zippers. Apparently, I shall not retract the flaps. Shall I nose down or advance the throttle beyond N1, or do both?
    Somewhat related to the last question: it seems that during takeoff and then climbing, the auto throttle basically moves the throttle to N1. It does not set the throttle to chase the speed bug or provide any speed protection (I guess it will do if you hit the SPEED button). Therefore, the pilot flying must pitch correctly for the right speed and climb rate. I wonder if it is safe to pitch to follow the displayed horizontal magenta line?
    Switching to rolling, in IFR, the rationale is to fly runway heading instead of flying runway track and making drift corrections. Is the verticle magenta line reliable to follow when drifting occur?
    Sorry for posting so many questions :-)

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Wotao! To answer your questions..
      1. Rotation rate is always the same no matter what the weight/external conditions are. Maintain a continuous rotation rate of 2-2.5 degrees to a initial target of 15 degrees then follow the flight directors.
      2. Follow the flight directors accurately. They should never put you in a low speed situation, you should never have to increase thrust from take-off power, even after an engine failure.
      3. N1 is a fixed thrust setting, you control speed at this point using attitude. Set a lower attitude to accelerate and increase your attitude to decelerate (Similar to LVL CHG)
      4. So long as you have a TRK UP display set on the ND the magenta line is accurate. (Your HDG is represented by a small white triangle on the ND arc.
      Hope this helped!

  • @knuble
    @knuble 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey there! One and a half questions concerning de-rated takeoffs and assumed temps:
    1st: Is there something as a "minimum remaining" for the 738? I'm asking because...
    ...2nd: I stumbled across the (still beta) freeware tool QSimPlanner, which calculates takeoff performance based on assumed temperature only (no option yet to choose anything but 26k for basic configuration though). I have been using it for some flights now, and, all data provided (takeoff weight, runway, runway condition, bleeds, anti ice..) it gives you a list with assumed temps, req distance and rwy remaining. Now, if I take the highest assumed temperature in the list I usually end up with about 89% N1 with a fully loaded aircraft..plus minus 2% depending on trip length. That seems realistic to me! The thing is, rwy remaining is as low as 522 Meters at the highest temperature. I'm pretty sure it gives me the highest safe N1, because if I play around with a/c weight etc. the last temperature in the list changes (so it doesn't just calculate every temperature disregarding safety).

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Knuble.
      Takeoff Performance is a complex calculation and there are many different limitations with several factors to consider, if I was to explain it fully I would need a good 45 minutes!
      Essentially we want to reduce thrust where possible as it increases engine life, reduces costs and creates a lot less noise
      We reduce thrust initially by reducing the derate (24K/22K etc) and secondly using the assumed temperature method. The maximum thrust reduction is 25% of full rated thrust.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Philip
      We do not edit or calculate Stab Trim using the FMC by entering the CG here. Our trim is calculated by a dispatcher using a Loadsheet and set manually on the trim wheel when we complete the pre-flight performance using the Boeing OPT App.

      Yes we would normally engage the A/P 1000ft AAL. However if prior to departure we brief the PM that we would like to fly the departure manually that's fine!
      Common sense dictates really, it wouldn't be best to depart from say London Gatwick with a level off at 4000ft in the busiest airspace on the planet whilst flying completely manually.

    • @flightdeck2sim

      APU Bleed is required for engine start and would be turned off as part of the Before Taxi flow. We leave the Engine Bleed on unless we were doing a No Engine Bleed takeoff for performance reasons. You must not increase thrust above idle with both APU Bleed and Engine Bleed on (Dual Bleed light will illuminate) otherwise you'll damage the APU. You would turn on the APU Bleed after shutting down on stand if you wanted to provide cool or hot air for the passengers unless you had an air conditioning cart or condition air from the air bridge! Hope this helped answer your question!

    Hi FD2S! I hear you saying: “2 to 2.5 degrees per second, then we get to 10.
    So I understand there are 3 initial states when starting the rotation. 1) Pull the yoke slightly until the attitude indicator is at the first white line (2.5 degrees). 2) Pull the yoke further to reach the number 10 on the attitude indicator. 3) Then follow the flight directors. Is this correct? If so, what’s the best timing for these 3 steps? How many seconds does each step have to take? It looks like you skip the first step and go directly to step 2. One last question: What causes the dead band? Thanks for making this great videos! Really appreciate it!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David,
      The rotation rate is 2-2.5 degrees per second to 15 degrees with two engines.
      You initially pull back to get the aircraft rotating. The Dead Band is caused by airflow being disturbed over the horizontal stabiliser as you rotate, it occurs at approximately 10 degrees and requires an increase in back pressure to maintain a constant rotation rate.
      You can definitely "feel it" in XP 11 and not so much with the NGX in FSX.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi KG,
      BYPASS appears in the FMC when the it's impossible for the aircraft to turn and fly over the next waypoint (typically when they are very close together) The FMC will still turn by creating a BYPASS routing and will just fly abeam the WPT as opposed to directly over it and will remain the active waypoint until it passes abeam.
      A ROUTE DISCONTINUITY will occur if there are three multiple bypasses in a row.

    • @flightdeck2sim

      Good question! With our fleet we do not edit or calculate Stab Trim using the FMC by entering the CG. Our trim is calculated by a dispatcher using a Loadsheet and set manually on the trim wheel when we complete the pre-flight performance using the Boeing OPT App. The PMDG does not have the option to remove this feature (if it does please advise!) and I calculated the required Stab Trim using a company loadsheet
      The only CG we have the ability to change is the CRZ CG on the PERF INIT page however with our fleet this defaults to 5% MAC. That's because 5% is the most restrictive C of G position during CRZ for calculating the FMC MAX ALT.
      That's why it was left blank even though the Stabtrim was correctly set!

Whenever we take off we get HDG SEL annunciate, even if LNAV has been pre-selected. LNAV then engages at 50ft after departure.
      During a missed approach when you push TO/GA to go around the Roll FMA blanks, you have to engage a roll mode at 400ft. It could be that this is happening when you're taking off!

      Good Luck!

    Sir , can you please help with something basic , understand that I have no computer knowledge , my son has fsx and xtreme environment 2.0 a yoke and throttle , I look at a video like yours and I'm blown away by the traffics, can you please help with what he would need to get a similar experience , all I get at the shops are jargon of rams , video cards , any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

      Hi Peter,
      I’m no expert either! I spent £1300 on a custom built flight sim machine from chillblast in the UK. It’s expensive but it’s what I need to provide a seamless sim experience.
      The specs are in the video description of my latest videos.

      Thanks for the quick response , much appreciated , I guess what I'm wondering is the following computers with 8 gm of ram or 1 gm of ram there is a big jump in cost is it the rams or video card that mostly needed , what do people that run these sim programs normally purchase to get a good experience , thanks again
