I hope you can make a video on descent management through the FMC, in what scenarios is most common to use level change, vnav or VS, how to quickly input in the FMC altitude restrictions when ATC tells to you to cross AT specific altitude over a wpt, or if you are given a direct route to FAF and you are coming in too high.

Huge help with my hobby and I thank you for your time and efforts helping all that use your input. Many thanks, it helps with my retirement to learn something new.
Thanks for explaining parts of the FMC I was wondering about (Eng Out Page). I use your Fix trick on every flight now since I learnt about it from another video of yours, I find it really helps with situational awareness and in making sure I am properly configured for the approach on time. I have had to figure out the Hold Page myself now, after being put in to a hold in KLAS (the first time this happened to me), a few times since due to Missed Approaches, and recently at EHAM (was surprised there, doesn't normally happen there). Looking forward to your Virtual Type Rating Series!
Hi Douglas, thanks again! That's exactly why we used them, to increase your situation awareness! I'll have a separate tutorial on Hold's in the near future. Have a great weekend! FD2S.
Nice presentation. I use the offset function more often for CB avoidance when I calculate the miles left or right needed to avoid passing through the cell, asking the control for a -xx miles L/R to avoid. It is very convenient.
Hi Stelios! Pretty much all of European Airspace above FL245 is Radar Controlled so we can just request a vector, wherever you go they are usually quite accommodating, even when it's busy! FD2S
The offset routing is used quite frequently in the U.S. to go around enroute weather. Instead of having ATC to give vectoring around the stormcells they usually opt for an offset (i.e 5-10 miles to the left/right of the edge of the cell, then clear them back on track when they've passed it. Takes a load of work off the controllers.
Cool! Someone mentioned in the States that this is quite common! Pretty much all of European Airspace above FL245 is Radar Controlled so we can just request a vector, wherever you go they are usually quite accommodating, even when it's busy! FD2S.
i am used to the X-plane 11 Boeing 737 cockpit. something does not feel right when i see the PMDG cockpit. i thank you for making this video. i learned something very useful thanks to you :)
These are really excellent tutorials, focused, crisp and not too long. I’m a retired RAF FJ Nav, analogue era, using a Jetmax 738 with Sim Avionics. So I’m really interested in maximising my use of the FMC. I’ve watched the Diversion tutorial but I’d be very interested if you could take it one step further and show how to handle a last-minute change of runway and SID ? Manchester, with its southerly runways and complex airspace would make a great example. Regards Chris
Thanks a lot Christopher! Runway changes in flight at short notice is a pain but on the ground it's easier to deal with. STOP taxying, re-select the runway/SID in the FMS, calculate the T/O performance and rebrief. Might look at that in a tutorial, I'll add it to the 1000 or something requested ones haha! FD2S
I found myself aware 60% of the tricks but not a pilot. Did I waste too much time in the flight sim or youtube? just kidding. I love this channel! Thank you, flightdeck2sim.
That's wonderful. I cannot help but pursue a "Ph.D." in home flight sim. LOL. By the way, real-world pilots say once you enter the China airspace, they often ask you to offset your route. Perhaps their routes are very congested.
Wotao Yin very good! I've only ever ventured outside of Europe in a light aircraft when I did my CPL in the States, I've only ever operated a 737 in Europe/North Africa, it could be the Norm in China, I wouldn't know! FD2S
The lores seems to be only when viewing it from youtube 'live' as I downloaded the tutorial and the downloaded video is much clearer and easy to watch and read.
Regarding offsets the primary usage is more for clearances off track due weather. You can then insert the offset as a reminder of your clearance. For example....Virgin 833 request 50 miles left of route due weather...atc then clears you. You insert a 50 mile offset to remind or reintercept to go around weather without busting your clearance limit of 50nm...anyway good vid keep em coming...
Hey Scarebus! Certainly in Europe it's always vectors around significant weather, I can remember we requested an offset once and the controller seemed rather perplexed by our request and just asked what heading we would like! ATC can also reduce separation when on a HDG when everyone is dodging weather which increases capacity! Thanks for the kind words! FD2S.
flightdeck2sim interesting ive only done a couple of European flights on deliveries. Its pretty much miles off track in Asia, Australia, the Pacific and US where radar coverage isnt 100% like in the EU. Most places like headings in the terminal still though! Be interested to see a vid on how you build an accurate alternate flight plan in the 73, ie with the missed approach, sid then enroute airways star and approach. Im Airbus these days (Corperate and regional prior) and am trying to work out on the NG how to see a way to plan a diversion ie alternate flight plan thats simply not direct which you never get? Does the 737 have an alternate flight plan function other than direct so you can continuously see your fuel state based on winds approaches and the enroute airways? Cool vids mate enjoying seeing the 737...
Awesome! You've seen a lot more than me then! I've only ever flown in Europe/North Africa! I have a tutorial already covering diverting in the 738 th-cam.com/video/AXIreP5Kj0o/w-d-xo.html We essentially select the alternate airport, select the STAR and modify the routing in the FMC. Our newer aircraft have the RTE2 function in the FMC which allows you to plan a second route to an Alternate or 2nd Sector. It's currently prohibited to use. Always wanted to have a go on the Airbus, I've sat in the back of one on a sector and never liked how the thrust lever isn't always representative of your thrust setting but it's a much nicer place to work! #traytable!!! All the best FD2S.
What's the difference between Lnav and vorloc. I mean while flying say cruising, I have to turn on vorloc or Lnav? Because sometimes Lnav doesn't respond. What is the use of cammand b autopilot? And 2 more buttons under that?
Hi Johny, LNAV uses data from the FMC to "follow the magenta line" VOR/LOC allows you to follow a radial to/from a VOR or intercept the Localiser element of an ILS or just localiser You would benefit from taking a look online at some of the technical aspects of the aircraft regarding you other questions! FD2S
Thank you for your video. I am not a pilot, and I do not sim either. I am not sure about this, so you can correct me if I am wrong. The offset function is there because of the Strategic lateral offset procedure (SLOP). This is a procedure that became necessary when increases chances of near misses flying over for example the Atlantic due to more accurate navigation (GPS basically). Of course this should probably not happen anyway because of separation both vertically and horizontally, speed restriction and what not. But this inaccuracy in INS was just a third layer in case someone had a level change which was a bit slower then expected or something (remember, no radar over the Atlantic, so it's based on position reports etc). To try to get this extra layer of security back someone a lot smarter then me, gave this idea to someone with a lot shorter work days, longer lunch breaks and a lot more pay then I have, and made a procedure that every flight over the north Atlantic can chose to fly the track center track, 1 nm to the left, or 2 nm to the left (anywhere from the track until 2nm left, but never more then 2nm left, and never right). This is chosen by the PIC or PF at random. As far as I know this is at least used over north Atlantic, it might be used in some other big areas without radar coverage. Again, I am just an enthusiast, and I would love to proved wrong, because then it just mean that I learned something new. So please let me know if this is wrong. However, my point is that you will probably not be asked by ATC to offset your track, as this is done at PIC/PF's will, and are usually not part of flight plan, or even reported to ATC that they are offset. Position updated shall be given as normal, without the offset.
Hi Hans, I’ve only flown in Europe and North Africa and not along oceanic routing and not qualified to do so, I cannot answer your question using the offset function transatlantic. It sounds like you’re very knowledgable in the area! Aircraft crossing the pond are often given entry points, a specific time they must cross it and a Mach number they must fly. Whether they use the offset function I’m not too sure! FD2S
Hello. At 10:08 you demostrate the waypoint editing in the pmdg... As the zibo doesnt do curves yet (for now) , I'd like to have this feature in the zibo as well... Could you have a look at it please? I just made a DMI arc in the zibo, and as the first DMI arc waypoint has an angle of almost 90 degrees, the zibo will not turn or add the curve like in the pmdg. Using the feature at 10:08 would allow me to shorten the waypoint and make the angle wider so the aircraft will turn to enter the dmi arc, and not "overshoot" the waypoint. Regards.
You're most welcome! Funnily enough I made some content for my airlines training department! Otherwise lots and lots of manuals and PowerPoint presentations! FD2S
On my last sim flight in the B738, I had a complete loss of the autopilot. The surprise put me behind the airplane and I had to handfly the rest of the way. I noticed a loss of localizer functionality as well, but the approach was within minimums and I was able to land despite IMC conditions. Do you have a video addressing this sort of situation?
Great stuff, I am using some of your tricks, but I came across a situation from atc that I had no solution to and hope you could give me what the procedure would be and how you would go about it. ATC instructs me to go DIRECT to a VOR that is not in the FMC after I reach the first waypoint in the STAR. I was about 30nm from the first waypoint of the STAR. In a rush couldn't find the VOR on the map, but it turns out it was some distance away off course to help line up for vectoring for the approach. Could you simply add this to the fmc and substitute it for the SECOND waypoint of the STAR and go direct? Thanks again!
4:40 If ATC asks for an expedited climb, can't you just select manual speed and select FLCH and manipulate a good climb speed? Seems like less button pushing and heads down time? thx
Hi @flightdeck2sim, this is one of my favourite tutorials, and I came back to it now, because I have a question that relates to the video. How would you enter a radial intercept in the FMC? Ex fly heading 123 to intercept VOR radial 270 then direct to waypoint such and such. Thanks, I really appreciate the effort you take to answer (everybody’s) questions!
why is my pmdg trim trying to always correct even though I'm flying manually? maybe a little unrelated subject. I heard so many explanations that still can't understand when i see videos being done here I don't hear. on manual flying, the trim being automatically working.
I have a cdi gauge with airmanager I'd like to put the gps course on. Is there a switch in the 737 to make it work. I have the toggle gps button programmed in msfs but it doesn't seem to work. But it will work with say the default a320. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Recently watched a JustPlanes Tui 737, approaching ILS 25L and ILS01 was also in operation and in case ATC requested them change runway they drew in a centre line of 01 through the FMC but it isn't shown how they did it. Could you explain how that's done. Cheers
Awesome videos. How do you get the FMS to have you at a specific altitude at a specific distance from a VOR/FIX. For example: Assuming you are direct to TUS VOR, ATC gives you “50 miles prior to TUS VOR cross at and maintain FL190”?
Hi Robert, thanks! In this example TUS/-50 at LSK1L and 190 at LSK1R. The FCOM that comes with PMDG is pretty much identical to the real aircrafts FCOM, some great guidance there 👍🏼 Good Luck! FD2S
Thank you for the video. Regarding offset, I’ve heard of some line pilots using the offset function with a very small offset such as 0.1 or 0.2 as a final safety measure against conflicts with traffic operating on the same airway. Have you ever come across this? Perhaps more applicable for Atlantic tracks or for other remote areas without good ATC coverage?
Great tutorial, thank you! Can you explain how do you check ILS frequency on Nav Data page? I can find coordinates, elevation, length, Mag Var on a runway but nat a freq. Thanks!
Hello and I have a question: if in the fmc you change a entry in legs let's assume we delete a waypoint, the exec button light's up for conformation. If I afterwards don't wanted to make this change is there a recall function? Thanks for your video's tutorials they are great!!
Hello again Dutch Challenge! Prior to executing a waypoint in the FMC LSK6L will highlight ERASE. Selecting that will clear to delete the pending change and return the FMC as it was. You can see the erase function at 3:38, even though I didn't select it! FD2S.
Very informative and highly enjoyable. One question though; how would you set the TURB N1 % after disconnecting the AT, would this simply be manually with the thrust levers?
Thanks Again Nigel, As simple as that! Just set the TURB N1% manually and we would let the speed fluctuate, extremely difficult to maintain speed in very strong moderate to severe turbulence, we do not chase the speed. FD2S.
Hi there IDE like to thank you for your tutorials. I am new to flying the 737 and your tutorials have thought me a lot. Thou perhaps I have missed this in one of your videos. But I am confused on how to set course. For instance if the chart says After take off climb runway heading Then intercept 220 radial at 1000ft Don I enable vor Loc? At 1000ft then LNAV ? Followed by VNAV then continued flight plan? I’ve noticed sometimes captain side course setting is different from FO?Is there a video of yours which explains in great detail. That would be very much appreciated . Thanks again.
Hi Mike, If it's in the FMC correctly use LNAV. You could use VOR/LOC but you'd only track radials if your FMC was inoperative. My Transit Tutorial has a SID brief which explains how we back up the SID using the Courses and ground based navigation (VOR in this case) th-cam.com/video/AhkIc7iKpzk/w-d-xo.html FD2S
Hi Aner44, You can only create circles using the Fix page around WPT's in the FMC Database, not the aircraft! Was there a part of this video you were referring too if I can help further? FD2S
flightdeck2sim I mean, when you arrive at the airport, there are green circles around it. It's circle is bigger than the others! I want to know how to set that on my FMC. Regards!
Aner44 have a look at 15:20 👍🏼 Aner44 got you! We place fix rings around the runway in use at your selected ARR. You can either line select key the runway in the legs page like I did in this video or physically type the runway using RW then the no. E.g. (RW24R). FD2S
Yo man, just wanted to ask about fcu arrival, when u are making a flight plan for a relatively short flight , should you put in dep then your waypoint then arrival , after that go to perf page and fill info, or can you wait for your cruise and about 15 min before TD type in your arrival then, which one would be better . Thank you
Hi Dablo, If it's a really short flight (eg positioning an aircraft to an airport 20 minutes away) fill in as much information as you can on the ground, including arrival information. If it changes in flight just change it in the air! FD2S
Hi Ben, All the information on the DES FCST page is used by the FMC to build an Idle Thrust Descent from T/D to the E/D point, the more accurate the Forecast information the more accurate your VNAV PTH descent will be. EAI we seldom use as it's hard to predict when we will use Engine Anti Ice, ISA DEV is the ISA Deviation at our destination (Using the temperature of the METAR) Hope this helped to answer your query! FD2S
I have a question regarding step climbs. Let's say you're at FL350 and have a step climb ahead where you're supposed to climb to FL360. The easiest way doing this is dialing in 36000 on the MCP and press ALT INTV. That will automatically set the new cruise level on the CRZ page and then you'll of course also have to set the new FLT ALT on the overhead panel. My question is what's the easiest way when instead dropping down from let's say FL360 back to FL350 without fooling the FMC into descent mode? I noticed how the same method as described above won't work but instead you have to type in the new FL on the CRZ page and EXEC and of course also reset the altitude on the MCP back to 35000 as well as on the overhead panel. Is there an easier way doing this similar to when you do a step climb? And if you accidentally have the FMC go into decent mode, is it possible to get back to CRZ mode?
Hi Richard. If we were to get a step descent or early descent to a lower CRZ level set it on the MCP and by pushing ALT INTV you will start a 1000fpm descent until it captures the descent profile. Obviously it will never capture it if it's an early step descent so all you need to do is insert your new CRZ level in the FMC on the CRZ page which will exit the descent mode. The aircraft will enter a "CRZ DES" maintaining 1000fpm until reaching the new lower CRZ level, that's how it's done! FD2S
A brilliant tutorial FD2S ! I wonder how many of these FMC/CDU (PMDG) features you've just shown us are implemented in the current version 3.32d of Zibomod B737-800X in X-Plane? If not all of them, how many will be implemented in the not too distant future ?

Could you maybe to a tutorial on how to fly the Runway 04 inital approach without radar vectors from CASEY to ILS into stansted? im struggling to input the custom waypoints D30.0 CLN D18.0 BPK ect into the FMC :) thanks for any help
Hi Dene. CASEY would only be flown if BKY VOR is U/S. Off the top of my head I’m not sure but If you select the ABBOT or a applicable transition it should give you good guidance. You would get radar vectored onto the ILS at some point after CASEY/ABBOT FD2S
I’m learning so much from your videos. Thanks for the effort you put in. How do you choose your flap setting for landing. Is it determined by the available runway?
Hi Colin Our Flap Setting is based on several factors but we follow the maxim "Brake to Vacate", essentially working out which taxiway we'd like to exit and then select our Flap/Autobrake combination setting based on that. FD2S

Excellent video, glad I found this channel, your tutorials are fantastic and I love the real world connections.
Thanks a lot Chris!

You leave me breathless. Awesome videos. I need to take notes!
Well that's most kind! Glad you enjoy them!

FD2S.
Thanks a lot. The information was so helpful!!!
FD2S.
Thanks FD2S... that was a great video as always.
Cheers Rajat!

In Australia we used to use Offset Route often to avoid large CB's (Thunderstorms). (Did it in the old days before FMC's too).
Great tutorial ! Thanks for the hints en tips !
Thanks a lot!

Excellent - love the clarity in your explanations 🙂_
I use mainly the airbus on fsx, wish someone simlar to you did the same for airbus. Love your channel.
Fantastic Vid on the B737 FMC!! Thanks
i am used to the X-plane 11 Boeing 737 cockpit. something does not feel right when i see the PMDG cockpit.
i thank you for making this video. i learned something very useful thanks to you :)
Thanks nelis 1846, ZIBO and the team are working very hard to provide a 737 cockpit which matches reality

Regards
Chris
Thanks a lot Christopher!
Runway changes in flight at short notice is a pain but on the ground it's easier to deal with. STOP taxying, re-select the runway/SID in the FMS, calculate the T/O performance and rebrief.
Might look at that in a tutorial, I'll add it to the 1000 or something requested ones haha!
FD2S
One dislike is an Airbus bro .... great video.
Haha, standard Scarebus move 👍🏼

I found myself aware 60% of the tricks but not a pilot. Did I waste too much time in the flight sim or youtube? just kidding. I love this channel! Thank you, flightdeck2sim.
Hi Wotao,
I barely scratched the surface! There is much more to learn!
FD2S.
FD2S
Great channel!
I have a tutorial already covering diverting in the 738
th-cam.com/video/AXIreP5Kj0o/w-d-xo.html
We essentially select the alternate airport, select the STAR and modify the routing in the FMC.
All the best
FD2S.
Great Tutorial. Thanks for your effort.
Thank you very much ! Lot of work for now ... :)
This is great, still applicable to the PMDG 737-700 on MSFS, looks a bit better now though. :)
Really useful and interesting so would love to see more on the same topic.
Thanks again Richard, there will be more FMC/CDU Tutorials in the future.

What's the difference between Lnav and vorloc. I mean while flying say cruising, I have to turn on vorloc or Lnav? Because sometimes Lnav doesn't respond. What is the use of cammand b autopilot? And 2 more buttons under that?
Hi Johny,
LNAV uses data from the FMC to "follow the magenta line"
VOR/LOC allows you to follow a radial to/from a VOR or intercept the Localiser element of an ILS or just localiser
You would benefit from taking a look online at some of the technical aspects of the aircraft regarding you other questions!

Afaik, lateral offset is used for NATRACKs as SLOP strategic lateral offset procedures.
Very informative!
I would be happy if you do another Tips & Tricks video! :-)
Will look at more FMC tutorials at some point 👍🏼
Hi Hans,
I’ve only flown in Europe and North Africa and not along oceanic routing and not qualified to do so, I cannot answer your question using the offset function transatlantic.
It sounds like you’re very knowledgable in the area! Aircraft crossing the pond are often given entry points, a specific time they must cross it and a Mach number they must fly. Whether they use the offset function I’m not too sure!
FD2S
much love for this video! thankyou
Fantastic! Thank You!
FD2S.
The offset is sometimes used and recommended. There's a procedure called SLOP (Strategic Lateral Offset Procedure). Please, check it out .
Regards.
Superb thank you! More of that please!! What about the exact tutorials real pilots get??
You're most welcome!
Funnily enough I made some content for my airlines training department! Otherwise lots and lots of manuals and PowerPoint presentations!
FD2S
great tutorial bro!
Please upload more tips & tricks on CDU B738 ?
Excellent information
Might you use 'offset' for weather avoidance?
Superb !
You are very good bro!
Good Job Sir. thanks
Great info! quick question do do you set a level say 10miles before a waypoint? often get "be level 10miles before (waypoint)"
Hi Paul,
Yes we do sometimes. You then create the WPT x miles before the WPT and add the restriction.
FD2S
@@flightdeck2sim thought so, how’s the easiest way to program this in?

Great turorial! I got a question. How can I shop the SID/STAR on the screen when I'm in the virtual cockpit view?
The FCOM that comes with PMDG is pretty much identical to the real aircrafts FCOM, some great guidance there 👍🏼
Good Luck!
Look into SLOP for oceanic airspace. Not a bad idea for domestic also, however not company or faa approved
Great tutorial, thank you!
Can you explain how do you check ILS frequency on Nav Data page?
I can find coordinates, elevation, length, Mag Var on a runway but nat a freq.
Thanks!
Hi Tamas. Thanks!
You can find the ILS Frequency for the selected runway in the FMC (so long as there is one) by pushing INIT REF.
Good Luck!

Thanks a lot!
FD2S.
How stupid of me I should have been able to discover this myself.
Hello, What is the difference between LRC & RTA in the CRZ page?
Thanks,
Very informative and highly enjoyable. One question though; how would you set the TURB N1 % after disconnecting the AT, would this simply be manually with the thrust levers?
Thanks Again Nigel,
As simple as that! Just set the TURB N1% manually and we would let the speed fluctuate, extremely difficult to maintain speed in very strong moderate to severe turbulence, we do not chase the speed.

Thanks FD2S!! Looking forward to more :-) Hope you have the time. I'm not far from your home base EGNX :-)

Best tutorial
Btw, BENAR is mean true (in indonesian)
Hi Mike,
If it's in the FMC correctly use LNAV. You could use VOR/LOC but you'd only track radials if your FMC was inoperative.
My Transit Tutorial has a SID brief which explains how we back up the SID using the Courses and ground based navigation (VOR in this case) th-cam.com/video/AhkIc7iKpzk/w-d-xo.html

Can you explain how do you use the Fix page to create those circles around the aircraft?
Hi Aner44,
You can only create circles using the Fix page around WPT's in the FMC Database, not the aircraft! Was there a part of this video you were referring too if I can help further?
FD2S
flightdeck2sim I mean, when you arrive at the airport, there are green circles around it. It's circle is bigger than the others! I want to know how to set that on my FMC. Regards!
Aner44 have a look at 15:20 👍🏼
Aner44 got you!
We place fix rings around the runway in use at your selected ARR. You can either line select key the runway in the legs page like I did in this video or physically type the runway using RW then the no. E.g. (RW24R).
FD2S
How do you find your arrival airport runway heading
Thanks Captain !
Thank you
Hi Dablo,
If it's a really short flight (eg positioning an aircraft to an airport 20 minutes away) fill in as much information as you can on the ground, including arrival information. If it changes in flight just change it in the air!
FD2S
So in DES-->FORECAST-->ISA/DEV and TAI on/off insight on what are purposes of these and how you calculate each?
Hi Ben,
All the information on the DES FCST page is used by the FMC to build an Idle Thrust Descent from T/D to the E/D point, the more accurate the Forecast information the more accurate your VNAV PTH descent will be. EAI we seldom use as it's hard to predict when we will use Engine Anti Ice, ISA DEV is the ISA Deviation at our destination (Using the temperature of the METAR)
Hope this helped to answer your query!
FD2S
Is AMB a VORTAC?
FD2S
Ah, thanks! I'll give it a try.
A brilliant tutorial FD2S !
I wonder how many of these FMC/CDU (PMDG) features you've just shown us are implemented in the current version 3.32d of Zibomod B737-800X in X-Plane?
If not all of them, how many will be implemented in the not too distant future ?
I hope as many as possible in time! Certainly the most important elements are implemented but not all!

Excellent work .....very instructive...I recently got the PMDG and I can fly it VFR...but I wish to do it in IFR and better if its in CAT lll.... unfortunately my laptop lags when its in high definition. I tried in low definition but then I cant visualice what do you activate and you are not clear in certain moments...also Im having a very slow internet .....Im in Venezuela....:(...so I got lost in your explanation about intercepting VORs....got it until you input 180 in the CDU...Couldt go further...what a shame......any way the induction IS EXCELENT..great job..
Thanks Miles! Keep practicing when you can you’ll get there! FD2S

Could you maybe to a tutorial on how to fly the Runway 04 inital approach without radar vectors from CASEY to ILS into stansted? im struggling to input the custom waypoints D30.0 CLN D18.0 BPK ect into the FMC :) thanks for any help
the chart plate is 30-2V
Hi Dene.
CASEY would only be flown if BKY VOR is U/S. Off the top of my head I’m not sure but If you select the ABBOT or a applicable transition it should give you good guidance. You would get radar vectored onto the ILS at some point after CASEY/ABBOT

How do you choose your flap setting for landing. Is it determined by the available runway?
Hi Colin
Our Flap Setting is based on several factors but we follow the maxim "Brake to Vacate", essentially working out which taxiway we'd like to exit and then select our Flap/Autobrake combination setting based on that.
