    I don't know how to play the drums, but I'm delighted that there are countless others who appreciate the beauty of Mitch Mitchell's drumming on Hey Joe. It's the best part of whole song.

      They had so less bells and whistles back then. The doors drummer kit, looks like a kids starter kit today. And he was one of the best stick men. It's all in the sticks!

    For quick reference:
    1:20, 3:30, 4:44, 5:39, 7:27, 8:52, 9:17, 12:25, 13:47, 14:45.
    Very nice job! Important tutorial for Mitch Mitchell style.

    I've been a Mitch fan since I first heard "The Experience" mainly because he could play those complex fills so powerfully and with precise accents that reminded me of gun shots - comparable to Philly Joe Jones.

    Great Job Rob !..I’m a huge Mitch Mitchell fan !
    I love to see anything covering Mitch’s drumming..that’s the best breakdown I’ve seen! Thanks!👍🏻

    Nice to see a good teacher actually teaching songs. Most teachers say nah I don't break down songs I want you to be your own drummer and unique. Then 5 mins later they say study the drummers before us that paved the way, lmao.

    • @larrytate1657
      @larrytate1657 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What they mean is I don't feel like taking the time to transcribe that song for you, so let me recycle another rudiment that I showed you 15 times already and teach you the same hand technique I did a month ago for a new 25 bucks. Even if the hand technique looks rly good I'm sure I can make some rubbish up.

    Very helpful Rob. This is way better than whatever I decoded for myself just listening to the track. Playing this @ a show in one month & will get busy with your help. Thanks man. Lori

    I'm sure the licks are written out well in terms of spacing, triplet patterns, and accents, but Mitch would never dare only play single strokes. He obviously comes from a very heavy jazz background and would most definitely be playing paradiddles, double paradiddles, and variations of of single-double stroke patterns for those fills. That's not to say he never played single strokes, but that was never his go to for drum filling.

    I started to play drums two months ago, and I found your lessons really interesting and useful. Yesterday a friend of mine, who already plays the drum (and he's been playing them since he was born, I guess) told me "a good start would be trying to play Hey Joe!". Looking at this tutorial, I don't think so, but I will try anyway! Keep going!

    it's gonna take me forever to get that first fill up to speed. I've read somewhere that Mitch Mitchell is mostly self taught. how's that possible?

    • @FawleyJude
      @FawleyJude 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He took drum lessons from Jim Marshall--the guy who eventually made Marshall amplifiers. But he may have taught himslef a lot of stuff also, that's how it was done in the old days. You listen to other drummers a lot then try to copy it. No sheet music, no metronome. I taught myself how to play these fills of Mitch's back in the day--late '60s.
