it should noted that one of mitchells greatest strengths was his ability to instantaneously react to jimis improv style of live performances. jimi never seemed to play a song the same way twice, and he didnt always go into a chorus, verse, or solo when you would expect him to. quite often he might extend one or another by a single bar. or maybe three tonight! or maybe come back into the verse a bar early. one could never know what to expect.
it would take a pretty good drummer to be able to manage that.

Hello. Mitch, Jimi, Noel,- trio knew their musical skills very well, each of them was a perfectionist. I've been a fan of this group for over 50 years, I like listening to them, watching their concerts and solo performances. Mitch is an extraordinary drummer and has a musical imagination that can be heard in his performance along with the other guitarist, Jimi on strat and Noel bass. Thank you for this short and interesting story. Rock'n'roll. See you.

Jimi enabled Mitch as much as he did Jimi & we are blessed to see that level of musical craftsmanship, songwriting, expression was allowed to take place. You really can't appreciate one without the other ☯️ & that 3 piece powerhouse will never be repeated sown into the pages & stratospheres of history. Always gives me hope seeing endless newer generations still turning on to the greats & appreciating the finer nuances & lineage. I enjoyed that. I remember I was about 16-17, got a copy of Axis on LP, copied it onto a cassette to listen on my Walkman, & I felt gobsmacked, like I was hearing & maybe understanding drums for the 1st time. The thing that "got me" first was how with Hendrix-like songs, guitarist singers would do some spontaneous lick like a comment on, or addition to, a lyric, but I was hearing Mitch do that: the tom fills on the playout of "Wait under Tomorrow" & nearly all of the song "Ain't No Telling". I kind of expected to hear things like that from drummers thereafter. Which may explain why I sort of preferred Mitch & other drummers of that era to what came after. A "fusion" record that echoed that "drums do the talking" thing was Romantic Warrior, by Return to Forever, featuring Lenny White. That was from 1976 & you don't hear much of that at a later date, by White or others. Really, with Mitch, it's the "three piece" thing, isn't it? If there's just guitar & bass the drummer has to be a musical contributor too, not just playing the 2 & 4 like a machine, or else the music will be as flat as can be. I mean: I'm pretty sure Band of Gypsies would've worked better as a trio with Mitch rather than Miles but it couldn't happen because Mitch wasn't "a brother" (ahem). Other examples with regards to that "rock trio" from 1967-76, where the drummer had to be not only busy but also musical, may be Rush & Rory Gallagher. When the latter got a conventional "just play the 2 & 4 driving rock drummer" in 1978 his trio bands lost a lot of their magic in the same way as Jimi Hendrix Experience vs. Band of Gypsies. Some drummers can cut it as drummer in a trio and those that do tend to be in the Mitch Mitchell vein, and so he influenced my ears a lot, in terms of what I can expect to hear from a drummer ever since that day that I was listening to a copy of Axis on a Walkman cassette (& later came to enjoy jazz drummers). The End.

Hendrix chose him above all others as his regular drummer for good reason.

Mitchell was awesome with Hendrix because they both understood how to swing hard with the Blues and that's what they did together and the way they called and answered each other with the melody lines were really great Hendrix would do a raunchy rhythmic figure and Mitchell would answer it with an equally stellar figure on the drums or as we Street drummers call chops. I agree with you they were perfect for each other said that they didn't keep the relationship going if they became a four-piece band I think they would have been even greater if they would have had a keyboardist where somebody goofing around with synthesizers and strings and all that stuff sort of a John Paul Jonesy guy I think that it would have been even more of an epic experience with them but they were great The Way They Were they should have never broke up. But you could say the same thing about cream but that was more about egos, with Jimmy I think it was just a self-destructive thing...R.I.P. Jimmy and now Mitch.

Maybe the reason Mitch Mitchell isn't rated as highly as he should be is that the details of his Elvin Jones-style nuanced playing disappeared when they played live. You can see how busy he is in live videos, but his finesse playing is mostly drowned out by the volume of Hendrix's guitar and Redding's bass. Say what you will about Ginger Baker - he was the first drummer to figure out that his jazz drumming techniques were useless in competing with dimed Marshall stacks. He pioneered the toms/bass drum-heavy style that smart drummers like Bonham and a few others soon emulated.

First I want to say that I love the hat and jacket. I dont know why, but it always makes me think of Tom Bombadil. Second, I love your vids, you are extremely knowledgeable and I learn something new every time I watch, also you are quite the skilled drummer. Keep up the awesome work!

As a fan, I've noticed that generally, the best musicians usually attract the best musicians to collaborate with; By that reasoning, Mitch Mitchell was second to nobody.

Sometime ago I was wondering why I never really liked band of gypsies...(and I love Hendrix) . It's Mitchell's drumming that really make the difference for me, it complements Jimi's perfectly.
