FPV Part 17 SkyWalker Maiden Flight with Ardupilot Mega 2.6, MinimOSD and EZUHF

- Testing the Skywalker RC plane with FPV gear. Thanks to Barney (Barndog726) and Jon (jmerc77) for all the help in getting off the ground. There lots of problems by we got then solved and had good flight.
I lost some of the DVR video footage because I pushed the off button before pushing the stop button to save the video file. However Jon captured the FPV video from the monitor with the hand held camcorder.
The HD aerial video was captured with the 808 #16 key-chain cam. There was some jello probably from an unbalanced prop so got to fix that. Looked ok flying dead stick.

Thanks for sharing your maiden flight video. I have been watching your build videos for weeks. I even went out to Walmart and purchased the same 12 volt television as my FPV monitor after watching your video.
I am currently building an RVJET to use as a search and locate platform off the western shores of Lake Michigan.

Yes the landing took a few tries but finally got it.

Might suggest balancing the prop I think that is what was causing the jello.
You will always get glitches when you are over head, no matter what antenna system you are using. I really like the monitor.
Great job, Cut back on the throttle and you can fly all day.

The picture on the 19" monitor looked good enough to fly by.
Need to try the goggles and do the ski mask mod on them like you have.

***** My RC club has in-door flying sessions every other week. It's winter here as well but no snow yet. Raining today and the temp is 60f. Hoping for the occasional nice day to get outside and fly.

Same here, if the whether clears up we go flying outside, but not fpv or with the apm flyer, I'l take the bixler or something els.
It is to wet outside on the field for the electronics wright now, not taking any chances to let the magic smoke come out ;o)

Congrats on the maiden fellas! I've been waiting to see this since I've been following your build. I will be building a similar FPV ship with the Bixler 1.1 and HKPilot Mega 2.5 board (Hobby King clone of APM2.5), that is if Santa is good to me! ;-)
Could you do a video of you setting up your board/plane in Mission Planner (ArduPlane Pids)? Did you download the specific configuration file for your airframe?

I also have a Bixler 1.1 but have not put FPV on it.
Yes I did download the config file but it was for the 2.5 and I was reluctant to apply it to my 2.6. What I might do is just manually set only the PID section and leave the rest alone. When looking at the file in a text editor I noticed some things I did not want for my setup. Have a good Christmas and enjoy all those toys!

That really looked good. I like the ground station mounted in a cooler. Everything is together and tidy. A lot of FPV pilot really like the SkyWalker as their platform. It really seems to be an awesome plane. How are you liking the Ardupilot?
Got the cooler idea from Dick Gibson.
I am liking the Ardupilot better now that I am learning what it can do an how to set it up. It's more complex but more fun for the robotics geek. There is a lot of on-line information about it since the software is open source.
nice job on the build, what ranges are you able to get before RTL kicks in with the Tx antenna in the back like that with the sma extention?

I don't know the answer to that at this time.
So far the EZUHF has been rock solid even in low power mode.
The sma extension cable really should have no effect on reception in my opinion because of the shielding and short run. Worst case scenario would be when the plane is aimed toward the transmitter and the LRS receiver antenna is behind the other equipment.

With the battery I think it weighs about 4 lbs. Is that what you are looking for?

Very nice flight. Are you using just 2 rubber bands to fix the wing?
***** Thanks, Plane comes with 4 rubber bands for the wing but I use 6 just to be safe.

+Spartak1245 They are both good FC's so it's a matter of preference. The APM is a harder to setup but it can also do missions if you need that kind of thing.

I've finally gotten some cash saved up to purchase my own FPV gear. I'm definitely working towards getting my setup in a cooler, just as you have. I'm curious...what size batteries are you using to power the "cooler" ground station and how long will your batteries power your ground station? I'd appreciate any help you could offer.

I have also changed to a pusher prop because the other was wrong causing a left hand bias.
How we'll does you VuPoint DVR record? I am looking for a better one.
Not very good, resolution is poor.
Some day I will get another one when I really need too.
There was a clip at the beginning of the video from the DVR where I was in front of the plane hooking up the battery. That is how it looks.

I am flying the Skywalker 1900 2014-Version, but I am not happy with the flight setup. Would you send me your Parameter file that i can compare to my one?
