    This was so amazingly helpful! I'm a beginner in both carpentry and diy so just trying to even understand the basics can be hard because people assume you already know.
    I'm trying to build just a coop but I'm using it as a practice for pretty much every skill related to it. I'm sanding, staining, building doors, using trim to hide the end of the hardware cloth, etc. I'm hoping to later use the skills to build my own customized furniture.

    I remember helping my dad hang doors. He chiseled the recesses perfectly. Marked everything with his pocket knife. Pocket knife, pencil, chisels and planes were always sharp. Used a yankee drill for the screw holes. Drilled for door knobs with a brace and bit. It was great and I miss those days! Anytime he or I needed a marking guage type thing, we just made one.

    My surface hinges are old as is the cabinet that they came off of. I'm having trouble putting them back on because they have been off for months. So according to your video, I should put the hinge on the door first, then the wood wall. And I found small slivers of wood under some of the hinges,I guess it was for proper fit? My home is over 100 years old I've learned many things on the old cabinet work.

    Hi Colin, Is it possible to install a butt hinge upside down? I am specifically thinking of the hinge type which has bearings. My common sense tells me that both bearings should share the load of the weight of the door and hence the hinge can only be installed one way. My observations however, tell me that the hinge is manufactured for either way up but then only one bearing will take all the downward force of the weight of the door. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks for many informative videos and your clear voice without any "music" and hype.

    I know it's not your job to help me, but I have a project I'm working on that I have a couple questions on (HINGES) and I am STUCK. I am reno-ing a china hutch. Put in new glass, painted inside and out and now am to the point of re-hanging the doors. I don't want to use the old ones-ugly, dated, ick-and am trying to find some new ones that will work. Unfortunately surface mount hinges won't work because the doors and cabinet have a routed edge. But Do the new hinges have to be the exact same size (width, thickness, depth)? I've tried some and can NOT get them to work and so am now in the process of filling all the screw-holes and starting from scratch. Got any help for me? Thanks!

  • @Alan_Garkle

    Hi Colin,
    Thanks for the video. In regard to Butt Hinges is there any reason that you use the marking gauge when scribing the timber for the long edge of the hinge, rather than turning the hinge over, pushing the knuckle/pivot up against the edge of the workpiece and scribing along the edge of the hinge? This is how I have done it previously, just wondering what your take is on this method.
    Thanks again.
    Jon

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RJJFavorites I like to use the marking gauge because it allows me different distances of hinge depth and still gives me a nice straight line to follow. There is nothing wrong with how you are doing it, I use the same method from time to time ... I always say, if it is working for you, no need to change :) ... thanks for posting Ron, always good to hear what others are doing.

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      aqwood Thanks for your comments, the problem is when I make them too short people complain that there isn't enough detail and in the end, it's not about the length of the videos, it's about ... are you giving enough detail to engage. If you find them too long, just press the speed-through button :)

    • @aqwood6430
      @aqwood6430 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That surprises me... I thought that people like to see the same amount of detailed content in shorter time. You are also making different kind of videos than I am, this is a how-to for beginners, not sharing your projects for busy people with too many subscriptions already :-) So more detail is needed. Thanks for the reply.
