There's a certain level of knowledge that usually only comes with experience and time spent in woodworking. These are all things that aren't taught in woodworking classes any longer, the tricks of the trade so to speak. I have been looking for a channel that conveys this kind of teaching for a long time now, only just discovered Workshop Companion and boy am I glad that I have. Unbeatable! The young kids on the block are all fine and good with their fancy dominos and cnc's, I enjoy that too, but nothing beats an old boy's knowledge and expertise!
Came across this video while researching concealed hinges...that demo cabinet is genius for explaining the different types of hinges! Most videos are for one or the other and one can't quite grasp the differences as well as with this video
Mr. Engler---Thank you so much for this lesson; it was worth every minute ,which for my viewing was even longer since I took voluminous notes. Certainly, nobody puts all the information together on this topic better than you do in this presentation. I am preparing to craft my first cabinet doors, and now--thanks to this presentation--I am ready to begin, beginning with ordering partial overlay hinges.
*God bless you sir!* Only 3 minutes in, and already I've learned things I never knew after maybe 20 years and 1,000 hours of TV and video. I love it when a topic is covered in a concise, top-down systematic, complete, mutually exclusive manner while introducing proper vocabulary along the way. You hit that on all channels.
I watched this because I had a few spare minutes and it seemed like a straight forward topic. I learned so much and now will change how I renovate my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Thank you very much!
I've been trying to figure out my partial inset cabinet doors for a couple of weeks and stumbled upon your video. Thank you so much for sharing this information, my wife will be ecstatic to finally be done with our kitchen project, happy wife, happy life!
I foolishly volunteered to build my own kitchen cabinets to save a buck and this video has given me more faith in my abilities; I can sense myself going down a rabbit hole of your videos to learn more tips and tricks to keep the blue words out of the kitchen. Amazing video!
As always, thanks for explaining how to do it, as well as pointing out ways to make it more accurate (in this case, making templates). You sir, are both a master craftsman and a master educator. Thank you for your dedication to making us better makers.
Great tutorial and refresher.....thanks! I've installed a lot of Blum hinges but must admit when I first began they were intimidating. Love how they are adjustable and totally concealed when doors are closed though. Really enjoyed seeing Bella doing more "acting" in this video......she's such a beautiful dog. I'm sure she gives you endless pleasure with all her antics!
I just fitted a door using these hinges today for the first time ever but if I’d seen this video I’d have been too worried to take the job on. Things went easily enough. Beginners luck. Thanks for your excellent videos.
Such a good video! You invested time and effort to make the demonstration box, which superbly shows how the hinges work! Thank you, extremely good video! And even mentioning the sizes in mm 😊
Hello, I just stumbled across your channel. I'm a retired cabinetmaker and have installed thousands of these hinges. I have a tip that will make this even easier. I like to work from "the center of my door" for laying out hinges and plates. Say I have a 30" door by making a mark at 15" I now can work from there giving me dead center of the cup location. I now take the center of the opening and repeat the process giving me accurate location for my hinge plates. Also if you have a door that is over 60" manufacture recommends 3 hinges. I would leave the hinge plate off the cabinet in the middle until after the door is clipped in place then install the third plate, less frustration on you.
Thanks for sharing. I usually make a story stick for each set of cabinets I design, since most of the openings tend to be the same height. But this works just as well without having to wonder where you put the dang stick.
Three minutes in and I finally found what I needed on the types of hinges. Took awhile to get my answers despite googling. The video has really been educational and helpful.
You are my hero sir! I was worried and stressed about how to replace my kitchen cabinet door hinge🪛. Your detailed explanation was excellent! Can't thank you enough for making this video.
No , thank you. I've been watching woodworking videos for the last 8 years. Yours is the best, Woodworking channel on TH-cam. Not woodworking "influencer", Woodworking. Thanks for all you do.
I really appreciate the detailed run-down, and the tackling of the worst case scenario requiring brackets, a lipped door, etc. This definitely gives me some confidence to tackle my much simpler project using these hinges tomorrow!
Thoroughly enjoyed your video this morning! While your expertise was on full display, it was the giggles you evoked that stood out for me (lost my religion, 6 or so times... per door 🤣)! Thanks
I work in a cabinet shop. We use these hinges daily. Great explanation!! Only thing I would suggest is leave a 1/8” gap between double doors. Expansion through the seasons will cause problems if you don’t!!
I always love your videos. So much knowledge and so easy to learn from the way you explain things. I’ve been working on learning how to build out my own cabinets and have them as nice as any I can buy and your videos truly help me
You are absolutely amazing!! I just watched a video on concealed hinges and couldn't for the life of me understand what he was demonstrating. You are extremely thorough, visuals are beyond great. I have a very clear understanding of the these hinges and which one to use. You covered it all; answered all my questions. I am very appreciative. Are you a classroom teacher? You have to be to be so detailed and understandable!! Thank-you. Oh and your doggie!!! What a companion, so cute, curious and so attentive!!
I taught "Wood as an Engineering Material" at the University of Cincinnati. However, the thoroughness and understanding comes from having spent 45 years as a woodworking journalist. I've written 50+ books and hundreds of magazine articles. I've long ago figured out how to tell a reasonably good woodworking story. The dog is a kelpie; name's Bella. She and I thank you for the kind words.
One of the best explanations out there on the subject and what you need to consider when installing them. BTW... if you buy your hinges from Rockler, spend the extra bit of money and get their matching hinge template(s) for the model(s) you buy. Well worth the money.
This is the 6th TH-cam video I've looked at and the 10th in total, counting the 4 I watched on cabinetmakers websites. Thank God I finally FINALLY found someone who actually knows what they are talking about! Thank you!
First time Watcher. I'd like to thank you sincerely for providing such vast and accurate information in such an easily digested fashion. You've got a new fan for sure!!
Very clear description of the different hinges & their application. I've watched several videos & walked away scratching my head. Thank you for another great video.

I appreciate the simple explanations without being condescending, the bits of humor thrown in, and the inclusion of both metric and customary units. Also, Bella is the second goodest companion (my dog, Princess, is obviously the goodest companion).
Great video! I especially appreciate your mockup cabinet of the 3 types of doors and hinges. You're also a very good teacher. Because I have no experience with these hinges, I'll probably buy the 2 jigs available for this purpose, so I don't mess it up!

This is an amazing video, in depth with great explanations and . The demonstration box with 3 different types of doors was just above and beyond. Thank you for another wonderful video About a year ago, I bought 12ish pairs of concealed hinges (1 product code QTY:12) for a kitchen and somehow got 3 diffrent types of hinge! It would be nice if the stockist put as much thought into their products as you just did :)
Concealed hinges are a constant source of frustration because you can't tell what they're for simply by looking at them. There are six pivot points! Who can look at that and mentally imagine where the door is going to end up when it's open or closed? Consequently, it's extremely easy to put them in the wrong stock bin. Or grab them out of the wrong stock bin. Or put them in the wrong package altogether. I have gotten into the habit of comparing the hinges to the their photo in the catalogue when they arrive.
Needing to adjust the cup hinges in my kitchen cabinets which were installed many years before i moved in. Thanks for showing me how to do the adjustment. You get a "like, subscribe, and comment"
I have never like installing or trying to adjust those type of hinges. After watching this video several times over, I'm tempted to give them another try. Thank you for this video, seems well explained.
Thanks for teaching. Saving this. Request: can you do a video on different hinges for chests? I made a kitchen bench nook thing and almost spent $200 on Torsion hinges. I don't know what kind of hinges exist now and how to best consider each hinge's weight bearing capabilities. All I really wanted to do was make a kitchen bench with storage that could open and close softly.
Thanks Nick! This was a very helpful and informative video. I think I'll build one of those boxes so I can experiment and practice with these different hinges. Thanks again.
Great teacher found out what TRANSFER PUNCHES were you need the drill the dead centre so when you screw in a hole it's 100% SPOT ON I bought one 25 pcs set for $50 on Trade me in New Zealand at 70+ Years old you are still Learning Been struggling over the many years lol👍
A good simple explanation is very welcome. The Blum hinge catalogue and technical manual runs to over 700 pages and has tables and graphs that are enough to inhibit many from even considering using one. I should say that many of the jigs for these hinges put the pilots for the screws in the wrong place so piloting using the actual hinges is the best bet.
Agreed on both accounts. Agreed that the Blum Catalogue is a fantastic door stop. And agreed that commercial jigs cannot be trusted. I know of at least one case in which a company apparently changed their hinge design, moving the screw locations, but the old templates (made by another party) continued to be sold. When I make my own, I always consult the company's published dimensions, and then check the numbers against the actual hinges I've been sent.
Great explanation. I want to re-use my 1970's oak cabinet doors which have a 3/8" inset. The only fully concealed hinges I've found are very pricey (~$30/pair). Home Depot sells a more traditional hinge which exposes the pivot barrel, but the screws are hidden for a fairly contemporary look, and much more affordable (~$7.60/pr).
You're absolutely right, the concealed hinges for lipped doors are ridiculously pricey. And they are much more difficult to install, especially if you're upgrading older cabinets.
I work with these hinges every day, so I know all the measurements off the top of my head. They're super easy. We even have the cup hinges for the doors that don't need any screws. It's called blum clip-top inserta. Just drill a 35mm hole for the cup, and two 8mm holes for where the screws would go and it clicks right in place.
Thank you Nick! Now I can somewhat keep my sanity when having to work with these hinges. Not to change the subject but , an idea for a possible future video-- A jig for exact repeat cuts (ripping and cross cutting) of sheet goods with a circ. saw and guide rail . TSO and woodpeckers make these jigs and they look great but I cannot justify the price.I built your sawhorse setup for breaking down sheetgoods and it works great.
