Yeah.. Even for relatively stable/normal people the economy is an issue in first world countries. Japan's economy is plummeting, in the USA within more populated areas you can't afford a small apartment unless you are relatively wealthy or have multiple roommates, I'm unsure about Europe but years ago certain countries had a lot of issues with migrants not respecting the locals and trashing public areas, we have Ukraine and Russia fighting eachother, Covid wasn't too long ago and a lot of people are just upset at life in general. Plenty of people don't want to work because the pay is too low to have a normal life so you'll end up living to work instead of working to live.
World's not in a great place so I'm genuinely not surprised the toxicity is spreading to the internet.
EDIT: Birthrates are also greatly decreasing in many countries.

I personally think the culture of “Work, Work and more Work” has driven my age group insane. I’m 40 so I remember the 90’s very well…
What happened? If we once were a united country without all of the hate, can’t we be there again?

Ever since I have dumped the mainstream news, most social media, and other similar things, it has made me realize something. For so many years I have been in a box constantly being forcefed these stories of either misinformation or fearmongering; stories consistently drilling it into my head that if I didn't care, then I was a bad person, even though I had no control over what was happening. If I had been given a button to either press for peace or war, I would've hit the button for peace without hesitation. All these stories were doing was deterring me from my own personal path of peace that I was always capable of taking; where I always had a choice in the matter. I choose to help.

It's a good maxim. Of joy as such with sorrow. I see many try and compare their suffering and pain with others. The truth is, if you are hurting and I'm hurting, then we're both hurting and need support. Additionally we can often times feel powerless, or simply are powerless to change things in our lives or in our world. But there is power in calling a bad situation exactly what it is, a bad situation. Because it reminds you that it's not the norm or shouldn't be, and rarely are you the only one who thinks so

The really sad part is that these bullies are also usually mentally struggling and suffer so much in their regular lives that they lash out against everything around them, especially online where it's a lot easier to be detached from how your own negativity affects others. I can't afford to attend in person, but I'll definitely be donating.
    Because *Jack is absolutely right.*
As someone who's survived suicidal depression for the past 16 years, I speak from experience when I say _it ain't ever easy._
*It's like forever being adrift at sea.*
Some days, weeks, or months are calmer than ofhers, but the *next storm is never far away,* and it's never a matter of _'if you capsize',_ but _'when you capsize,'_ and _'whether you have enough mental resilience to survive the storm and rebuild the boat afterwards.'_
Yes, I had hobbies to keep me somewhat sane at times, but I was also *lucky enough to have people to lean on at my worst moments,* and now that I'm gradually finding my way again, it'd be remiss of me not to help others who might not be as lucky as I've been.
If Jack can help me help others, then of course I'll donate, even if I don't got much right now. It's money well spent.

The internet has allowed people insane amounts of unwavering confidence because it is all behind the screen, which gives them a sort of “safety shield” to hide behind. They think they are allowed to say whatever they want, to whomever they want, when in reality, they would NEVER say such things in real life to a person. That’s because of what I like to call the Screen Complex. It’s so true that we are absolutely BRUTAL to each other. Kindness is a lot easier to ignore when it’s just words on a screen, but they hurt just as much as real words.
Thank you so much for your continued support and strength, Sean. You are a pillar in so many lives.

A lot of the time I still don’t. The loneliness part is so fucking true. I don’t have friends in real life. The only time I interact with people is on forums. When they get toxic, I end up feeling like there’s nowhere to go. Especially when it’s hard to make friends irl.

So when millions of people are fed arguments and hate, that's how they decide to interact with the world. It's sad, really. What Jack says here, reminds me of a quote that I saw, that I also agree with.
"Before, People would go onto the Internet to get away from the real world. Now, People go out into the real world to get away from the Internet."
There are days where I feel empty, alone, I get that sickening whisper in the back of my head that says that all my friends find me irritating, and that I'm only an inconvenience. When I get those days, I go out, walk on the beach, go see some family and friends. And I feel better. Sometimes I wish others that didn't have that opportunity had the means to do so.

Our mental health in America is so broken. My friend that’s a EMT gets so many calls for suicide. And no one talks about it. It’s a really sad time we are living in right. A damn indictment in itself, really.
But if nothing else, I just wanted to say: *thank you, Seán.* Your advocacy for mental health and the positive energy you put out there are _literal_ life-savers -- there's been times where the only thing that stopped my slide into the darkness on a given day was poking my head in the door on TH-cam and seeing your latest video on my feed. There’s no good or bad on a variety of topics, just echo chambers and reality. The best decision isn’t always the kindest one, and the most immediately ‘effective’ decision doesn’t always have longevity and may have greater consequences. The best options are often the hardest ones to choose simply because they aren’t our ideal, but the ideal is a goal, not something we can force.

There is a new book I intend to read titled, "The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness" that talks about the epidemic of teen mental illness that happened in many countries at the same time in the 2010s. The theory is that play-based childhood declined and was replaced by phone-based childhood amongst other issues like social media and overprotective parenting.
I applaud you Sean for speaking frankly about your struggles with mental health (my generation did not do that). The issues are as varied as the individuals, but all should be treated with respect and empathy. I am so glad this year's Thankmas is to benefit those organizations that contribute to the well-being of those who suffer with mental health problems. Thank you Sean.

I don't mean to be rude but that book sounds really unscientific and i'd advise you to be cautious when a complex issue like this is oversimplified by people who pose as "experts" in order to promote a nonsensical, misleading but aesthetically pleasing narrative. I haven't read the book myself, this is based on your description. There are heaps and heaps of videos and books claiming the same thing and they're all terrible because they end up succumbing to intellectual circle jerking, psuedoscientific echo chambers and pseudointellectualism.

@@OkamiLyra I'm simply advising caution based on the description. Why do you think i should have to read it to do that? @@carrots4216 I appreciare seeing someone encouraging caution about these kinds of topics, but uou should never imply something could be harmful or outright wrong without at least somewhat knowing the material being referenced a little bit. I can confirm that, in my case, I ended up with much worse mental health after I fell into using computers constantly as a child to cope with being unable to just... play like normal kids my age thanks to my bones being fragile. Not quite the same, no, but close enough for it to be believeable.
One should always make sure they know for certain what they're talking about.

    • @carrots4216
      @carrots4216 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@OkamiLyra I appreciate your concern, but I’m not trying to discredit the book outright. My caution stems from observing patterns in discussions around these topics, especially when they involve complex issues like mental health. I also think it's limiting to discourage inquiry and reasonable concern stemming from observations of broader trends.
I actually did take another look at the book by the way, i looked at the reviews and the amazon listing and i think i was right to be concerned. I had only looked at the cover when i wrote my first comment and it already seemed a bit like propaganda/fear mongering but even then i was way off.
Thank you for sharing your experience, individual experiences with screen time and mental health can vary widely, but it's crucial to recognize that correlation does not equal causation. I actually had a very similar experience to you, I would get overstimulated easily and would spend all day learning about dinosaurs and fungi on my computer or playing videogames, except my mental health was great. People owning more cars in general will mean more car accidents happen but there's a deeper reason as to why those accidents are happening; it’s the factors surrounding car use (driver behavior, traffic conditions, etc.) that matter. Just as car accidents can reflect broader societal issues (like infrastructure or public safety regulations), mental health issues can signal deeper social, educational, emotional, and economic problems that need addressing. It kind of reminds me of how the general public is now blaming the rise of crime here in europe on immigrants and assylum seekers even though there are deeper issues causing it (segregation, wealth inequality, lack of opportunity, etc).
Screen time can't be solely blamed for such a complex issue. While it can play a role in mental health outcomes (like pretty much everything), it's often one piece of a much larger puzzle. In reality, Research indicates that mental health issues in youth are multifactorial, influenced by socioeconomic status, family dynamics, and educational environments. For instance, studies have shown that children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds experience higher levels of stress, which significantly impacts their mental health.
Critical thinking is becoming more and more important with all the misinformation concerning this topic, the best thing you can do is ask questions and be skeptical.
*I'm editing this because i have more to say about the book*
I'm not sure if this book deserves anyone's time at all honestly. It seems like it's gone out of it's way to look as deeply unserious as possible. It doesn't seem to want to provide any nuanced perspective or anything, just pseudoscientific propaganda for parents. I was going to say that it's disguised itself as something thoughtful but it hasn't. It actually looks like there's nothing of substance here at all.
Think of it this way. If I'm trying to get a job and my contractor is dressed like a clown why should I be expected to take him seriously? Why should I take the time and energy required to go to an interview if it's clear hes just joking about. Some of us find reading incredibly difficult or don't have much free time so i think it's disrespectful to expect people to sink their time into something that painfully seems designed to waste it. It feels really weird to say that you're only allowed to call something out for being an obvious waste of time (it's obvious) when you've fully made sure that it's not one after wasting your time on it!
It's on the author to convince me they have something interesting to say and the first impression was awful. Sorry if the tone here was off.

Ive been struggling with suicidal ideation for most of my life, even as a child. It was so hard for people to understand why id even feel that way, why id want to hurt myself, why id want to not exist, so people would blame me, tell me im selfish, that im going to make my family feel horrible, but it would just deepen the issue even more. I think the topic of suicide has opened alot more and people do need to understand that shaming someone who feels that way makes it worse, I think it has changed and there is alot more sympathy and empathy rather then shame. Im thankful my ideation has gotten alot better, and that you are helping raise money that will actually help alot of people.

I grew up with a mother who suffered from bipolar disorder but I was born in the 80s which meant her only option for my young life was tegratol(spelling?). Treatment was pretty much non existent and she attempted suicide at least 4 times I'm aware of and that means it was probably closer to 10 since I was the youngest and my dad and sister tried protecting me. Towards the end of her life the last two decades she was actually almost fully stable and it's thanks to advances in both pharma and talk therapies. Shes no longer here unfortunately but my eldest child suffers from depression/self harm so I feel as though I'm about as close to understanding depression in many forms as someone who didn't go to school for it or those who suffer from it. My point to all this is I'm glad your doing better and I sincerely hope someday they find some treatment that works consistently for everyone. Have you looked into psilocybin treatments? It looks very promising and is something I've been researching the last couple years for my child when they reach adulthood.

Monarchy wasn't perfect but at least people have a sense of duty in it. Democracy sounds good on paper but in the end it just turns into a corrupt bureaucracy. In my opinion we need a system that comprises both. Voting for leaders but a person above the leaders to keep them in check. That in my view is the only way to keep corruption at a minimal in a system. Having leaders who are only in office for certain amounts of time makes them far more irresponsible in my opinion. If they had to take responsibility their entire lives that would likely lead to higher responsibility. We also need to bridge the gap between wealthy and poor and expand the middle class.
