Had this bike '76 exactly like this one except I had after market jugs on the top with larger angled fin area's for better heat dissipation. Noting like that 2 stoke sound and that long stream of blue smoke behind it. Just loved it.
I'm about to do this to my 77 RD400.. gonna do all the painting myself. My plan for the frame is glass bead blast it to bare metal, etching primer, few coats of black Dupli-color then a few coats of 2K clear to protect it all. Same thing will happen to the tank and panels. Fingers cross it all comes out looking good and is durable.
My first bike was a 1974 RD350, bought new for about $1000-1200, and afterwards I bought a 1976 RD400, which was more refined that the 350 -- smoother and with no plug fouling. I would love to find either model again to restore/rebuild. They were great bikes and loads of fun. Your restored '77 is beautiful and makes me envious (where did you get the pipes?)
Yes they are a lot of fun! I have another 1977 RD400 project for sale with a second basket case bike if you are interested. Pipes are DG. I'm a dealer if you ever need some.
Thanks. The offer is tempting, but I'm quite a bit south of you, in Lexington, Kentucky. The model I would really like to find is an RZ350, but they are rare.
Yes, beautiful job on the restoration. Great attention to detail. Looks better than new. Sounds excellent also. My stuff tends to get over restored like this. One day I would like to add and air cooled bike to my stable but for now it's RZV500 and a ton of RZ350's. I am curious if you are a shop or are these your own bikes???
We are a shop that sells vintage motorcycle parts. The restorations are mostly for my private collection. But we recently started to rebuild bikes to resell like the CR's we posted on our channel.
Une rd bien réglée ne fume pas comme ça, même à froid, et de plus, une restauration soignée est incompatible, dans l’esprit avec des bruits d’échappement inciviques, et pas qu’un peu !

Very nice!
I got hold of a RD350, 1975 I am going to restore.
Same color.
Thanks for the upload :)
Very nice job! Please post your shop.might be looking for parts in near future.

Powder coating it would last longer and be far superior. Spray cans suck, even if you do a great job, it is still sub-par.

Beautiful restoration.. I'm restoring my 77 French blue. How did you restore the wheels? Did you paint them?
Hi ! No, the wheels was good, we just cleaned with acid and after that washed.

Tengo una Yamaha rd 400 en exelentes condiciones en Mérida Venezuela original con su respectivo color
Im curious did you paint the tank yourself? If so did you clear coat over the decals or put them on after? Your bike is gorgeous, nice thorough job!
Painted by a friend and put the original decals after. Thanks !
I like the pipes, what make are they?
