thanks for the rad memories man. great job jeff! My first was the orange 75 I had gotten at 15 from a guy at school for $700, had low bars, orange oakly grips, and dg chambers, 2 years later i purchased a red '77 (wanted the blue but they had just sold it and i couldn't wait a week, good thing, cause a close friend got a blue one a week later) from brandon yamaha in florida, so i could get to work and school with the help of my grandmother who cosigned for the loan, i think the total was $999 out the door, or $99 a month for 12 months. i was a happy boy, life was much more simple then.
Absolutely beautiful RD, sure brings back great memories of my 1990 RZ 350 [The last of the RZ's ] The thing about these bikes is you can have a ton of fun at speeds that aren't completely irresponsible, boy do I wish they still made em.
that was my first street bike! back in 1988! a 1977 RD400! i paid $400 for it. it sat in the backyard for a little while because it needed a CDI box. then my younger brother bought a 1976 RD400 so i fixed mine so we could ride together.. unfortunately, he scuffed a piston due to leaning out. so i rebuilt the top end for him with .030 oversized wiseco pistons. his bike also had aftermarket pipes and had a quarter fairing around the headlight and was painted up like a kenny roberts bike. it looked awesome and would absolutely crush my bike on the straights.. (that part sucked lol) but what a blast we had! those bikes were just awesome! light and fast! ahh those days rocked!
Thanks for the memories. I had a '74' RD 400 in silver.. Modded with larger carbs, boysen reeds, and exhaust with very large expansion chambers. Lots of fun until the oil pump gave up the ghost. Makes me want another one. Ah, the memories. Off the line it was super quick, and setting in traffic and seeing people looking for what was making that great exhaust note.
I bought my '77 new in the crate at 15 1/2 to take my Lerner's Permit and DL test on in High School for $1200 OTD......same Orange! I could start it with my hand. Put Spec II pipes on it. Wheelies were effortless!
Strange set of add one! I raced a RD400 (still have it) and ended up making my own rear sets. The passenger pegs are ridiculously placed and I can’t see having a passenger behind. But it looks nice! Hope you’ve got the carbs jetted properly for the expansion chambers. Erv Kanemoto’s pipes are the best for great power from 6-9,000.
I had a 75 rd250 (white w/red stripe). At 18,500 miles, I put a set of ported 350 jugs, chambers, fiberglass reeds and the gold heads on it. Absolutely brought it to life. From that point on, it spent half of its life on the back tire. For awhile I ran a set of wheelie bars on it. Cops would pull me over just to look at it. Over the years of owning it, I did outrun a few of them. I’d go straight home and repaint it and my helmet. 🤣 I let a guy ride it one day, he took off and the powerband kicked in and his legs went out. He set it back down and shifted into the next gear and away he went. I stood there waiting for him to come back for awhile. Then I saw him pushing it back. I asked him if it quit running and he said too fast…. too fast…🤣
Hey guys you did a beautiful job on that rd400 I used to race 1 way back in the day in the early 80s so it brought back some great memories mine was the Rd Daytona special 400 but anyway on your shifter you could have just taken the original shifter and turned it around backwards and what it does it changes your shifting 2 one up and five down or maybe for them I forget I've had so many bikes since that one but I'm looking into finding another one soon good luck guys stay safe thanks for the video
Never seen anyone ride an RD that mellow ... just kidding. I'm sure you are keeping it on the low down ... sounds great by the way. I had that same bike, and a yellow RZ350 and then a bunch of bikes and still have a bunch. But, I wish I had that RD back! It was a great ride.
Bike looks amazing!!! Can I get contact information for Joe Spooner of Chippewa Falls? I am starting to plan my complete restoration of my beloved '78 RD 400. I sold it to a friend around 25 years ago. After multiple attempts, I have finally gotten it back. Completely disassembled and missing many parts. I'd appreciate it if you could point me in Joe's direction. Thank you very much.
Man, that is soooo nice. This was my first street bike. I bought one in 1982 for $700.00 in mint condition. Some of the mods are the same. How much could I prchase one like this for in 2021?
The rear sets are from motocarerra. They were modified which you see later on in the video. The rear mudguard us stock. The plastic inner guard was cut and the whole chrome fender was slid back and remounted. Now it's shorter without cutting Tue nice rolled edge. I can sendnpocs if you like. Email me at jeffreystieg@gmail.com for pictures.
Growing up i new a guy who became a semi-pro racer and RD400 is where he got is start. The dude was crazier than a shit house rat. Here it is 40 years later and I can practically still hear the sound of it.
I like to ride with my wife on the back and that's the nicest two up seat that I could find. The stock seat kind of looks like a black loaf of bread and had to go.
I like to ride with my wife on the back and that's the nicest two up seat that I could find. The stock seat kind of looks like a black loaf of bread and had to go.
Sounds nice! This one has had quite a lot of engine/ carb work done, full racetech front end including gold valve emulators, and upgraded rear with alu swingarm and progressive 12 shocks. I want to put a powerdynamo/ vape ignition and charging system on it next. Need to save some could for that though.
What type/brand of handlebars are those? I'm looking to change the clubman style handlebars on my 77 RD400 which came with the bike when I bought it. I can't seem to find any that will work or ones that I like. Thanks!
If those are the original wheels - meh. They were only used because by that time they were _cheaper_ than spoked wheels but are (IIRC) nearly a kg heavier than the latter (might not sound like much, but that's unsprung mass which is Not Good). I'd have used alloy rims (might have necessitated using earlier RD hubs with a rear drum brake, but that's really no loss). Otherwise, lovely bike - RD's are genuine classics, and I still miss the RD250B I learned on.
When the RD400s first came out, people paid more to have the mags vs the spokes. Having them was an option then because standard after '76. The mags were cool at the time because no other street bike had them. The spokes are lighter and faster, but the mags look great on it and are part of the RD400 story.
The rear fender is stock. The plastic inner fender was cut down and Tue chrome fender was slid forward and remounted. It turned out nice. The tail light is an emgo Lucas style. The turn signals are chrome led bullet style. The headlight is an emgo 7" with an h4 plug. I'm running an led in the headlight.
Sorry, but not even close to the nicest. You need to spend another 4 grand on go-fast parts and tune it right. My '77 even had Dymags. Put a lower cafe or race seat on it and the rear sets will make sense.
FIRST VIEWER!
Btw that bike is awesome

You had a 74' RD 400? 400's wer'nt produced til 1976!
Probably a 78
If you had a factory silver RD400 it would have been the 1978 RD400E. Last year before the Daytona.
I had a '77 in '82 boy i liked that bike @18 yrs old.... drop bars and quarter fairing 😂😂 i think i paid $600 for it maybe $700
The Contour of the seat ' is way better than stock ! Thumbs Up!
The nicest RD400 restoration on YT. Very nice
I bought my '77 new in the crate at 15 1/2 to take my Lerner's Permit and DL test on in High School for $1200 OTD......same Orange! I could start it with my hand. Put Spec II pipes on it. Wheelies were effortless!
New? Where did you buy it?
@@Jhoekstra This was in '77 at a Yamaha Shop south of Mission Viejo California.
@@RadioReprised man, for a moment I thought you somehow got your hands on a ‘new’ RD400…
@@Jhoekstra I would have bought 10!
@@RadioReprised For sure!!
It’s so cool how you guys have all these old bikes iv never seen before
Man that rd has some power to just stand up like nothing & sounds so good sounds like a race bike on a track really nice bike
The chambers have a nice stock look and great sound, wow! Memories...
Strange set of add one! I raced a RD400 (still have it) and ended up making my own rear sets. The passenger pegs are ridiculously placed and I can’t see having a passenger behind. But it looks nice! OMG reminds me of high school days going to school with my RD 400 I heard this two stroke with chambers i Almost passed out from rush I got

Nice Restore...I've had 28 RD's ..None never looked this good ! Nice Work..Ride Safe..
Pure envy. Love the sound. I know it's much louder and crisper in person. I also wish I had smellavision cause I'm sure your running some sweet mix.
Rigguy so crisp in person!
I'm running Motul synthetic. The oil itself smells bad but the smoke coming out of the pipes smells great!
Snap, crackle and pop.
Nice. I restored one last summer nut/ bolt resto. It’s a fun ride.
Beautiful rd, top restoration 😎👍
Love that sound! I miss my old RD400, some year same color. Great bikes!! Enjoy.
His neighbors must love him
now that is the first mint bike I've seen on here, its awesome!!!

That rd looks so good🔥👌
Looks like Zundapp Fury DX175 with those wheels and front plated mudguard
that's so rad! what pipes do you have on the 400?
Custom heads on the 350 are cool.
That is one interesting break in process for a new bike
It's already been ridden and broken in. Still not riding too hard. It needs a couple hundred for miles until I do that.
Gorgeous bike! What bars are on the bike from the beginning of the video. Thanks!
Those bars are CB400F low bars. They are the perfect rise and pullback for a sporty ride without killing your back or wrists.
That's as good as it gets for a RD400

Hey Jeff- what seat are you running?
Man I was totally waiting for WOT !!
Nice bike . I like the liquid cooled 350 with the ferring better .would rather have the rd500 lol
Which rear swingarm are you using? Where can i buy 1 from ?
My first street bike was a R5 C 350 cc. great bike
got to know how to ride them. gotta keep them on the pipe. 8k to 11k is where mine likes to be.
You get any port work done on the cylinders? Waiting to get my jugs back from Chuck Quenzler - can't wait to see what porting magic he did with em!
Chuck had my cylinders and worked magic on them. He did his stage 1+ port job and opened up the intake for YZ85 reeds.
THANKS! DG heads! Not bad.Hope your running high octane fuel!
Sounds sweet 😂 I prefer saying wicked. More manly and relevant.
The orange rd 400 really doesent sound like its running right under acceleration ,its spitting and cutting out , the other one sounds better.
I've owned a 350 myself so powerful, wish i have the chance to ride the 400
Man, that is soooo nice. This was my first street bike. I bought one in 1982 for $700.00 in mint condition. Some of the mods are the same. How much could I prchase one like this for in 2021?
Stop telling lies lad
Where did you got the footrest set? Very interestning! And the rear mudguard with the taillight?
The rear sets are from motocarerra. They were modified which you see later on in the video. The rear mudguard us stock. The tail light is an emgo Lucas style tail light.
I had a blue 1977 RD400 (RD stands for rapid death 😂)
400 is more beautiful than the 350 sorry but you can’t beat perfection of the Rd400
Cool RD. What swing arm did you use?
I was made by a guy named Bill MacIntyre who used to make them for DG back in the day. He made this one to order.
Those pipes?
Is it for sale?
Where to buy the parts? Sir
My brother had one exactly like that nice bike.
Awesome Guys Just needs a boot mod or go back to the stock shifter & pegs
love that sound! :)
Growing up i new a guy who became a semi-pro racer and RD400 is where he got is start. The dude was crazier than a shit house rat. Here it is 40 years later and I can practically still hear the sound of it.
What swing arm is that? Did you have to do any mods to get it on?
It's a bolt on DG style swingarm. A guy who made them for DG still makes them to order.
Really nice 👍🏻
Really nice build. That seat has to go though!
I like to ride with my wife on the back and that's the nicest two up seat that I could find. The stock seat kind of looks like a black loaf of bread and had to go.
Where did you found that?
You got to change that see it looks like a sofa are a hot dog bun or Twinkie!!!
I like to ride with my wife on the back and that's the nicest two up seat that I could find. The stock seat kind of looks like a black loaf of bread and had to go.
Jeffrey Stieg my bad good point happy wife happy life ! and it does look better than the stock seat
What are those pipes on the RD400?
Spec II classics
SHORTS? Friggin shorts? His legs are gonna be ground beef in even a low speed crash
I don’t know about everyone else but I’m going to find me one to restore
I DON'T THINK SO! MY 400 LOST 32Lbs. A SHOW A monoshock with preloaded front end and engine mods to boot! I lightened everything and it "KICKS ASS"!
Charles Aguilar
Unfortunately, You no longer Have it !!

Those are CB400F low bars. You can get them new from eBay. They worked out well. Low and aggressive enough still very comfortable.
🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
Wait is that the same Rd he raced against your Ducati?
Basko on two wheels yes
wow! this thing could acutally compete against the ex Ducati haha

I’m looking for advice to buy a pit bike what should I do?
Quadrunner 365 just buy the cheapest one that runs good lol
Quadrunner 365 they all break in 30 running hours so just dont....
Thijs chinese pit bikes are hit or miss
I raced them in the 70's AFM
Does anybody know what rear fender/brake light/blinker set up this is running? I'm modifying a '77 Rd400 and I'd like a similar setup.
The rear fender is stock. The plastic inner fender was cut down and Tue chrome fender was slid forward and remounted. It turned out nice. The tail light is an emgo Lucas style. I can send you detailed pictures. Just email me at jeffreystieg@gmail.com

Wrong seat and wheres the tailpiece?
Tailpiece was only offered in the 78 model! RD400E
