The video is great with 3 exceptions. 1. Install each new coil and new plug wires onto power pack, starting with bottom coil first, before mounting power pack with the coils as a complete assembly. 2. Apply aluminum anti seize on 6 bolts that support power pack to engine. 3. Start engine to demonstrate success.
I had to do same thing to my Merc. would run great on the muffs but when in the water stalled unless I revved it and trimmed it down into the water. It ended up being an intermittently failing ignition coil. Runs great now.
You were in the way a lot where you couldn't really see what you were doing, also you said you might have to replace the optical eye and power pack did you replace the optical eye too or is that part of the power pack
If you suspect the pistons, you should do a compression check. Some engines will go into a safety mode while overheating which limits the rpm. Usually, an alarm will sound on the dash; but many older engines don't have working alarm/warning light systems.
I wanted to see it run!!! I think I have the same issue. My evinrude 120 sounds exactly like yours and shakes, does a power pack kit come with new wires?
Could be a bad connector... on the wire end or the powerpack end. There is a way to check the powerpack using a meter. Most service manual describe how to do it. Given the age of the motor I just decided to change it and keep the old one as a spare... but turns out it was the problem. Good Luck and let me know what happens!
Hard to say... you'll probably have to trouble shoot each item. If you haven't checked it yet... there should be a blade fuse in a waterproof holder on the right side somewhere. There will be a spare fuse in there too, so be sure the check the actual one in use. I purchased the power pack and optical sensor kit, since I just wanted to be sure I fixed the issue before selling the boat.
Hi, I rebuild a Johnson 140 4 stroke fuel injection. It start right away and sounds great but, it start shaking at middle range rpm. It does it only when not in gear. Any idea what could be wrong? Thanks
I have a question sir, I have a 1997 175 V6 Johnson outboard I have bought 2 coils that keeps on going out when installed now I just bought my third but this time I bought it original should I check my power pack before installing the original coil??
I have a 1999 150 ocean . I was running the engine and it just stopped. I checked one of the plugs and found no fire. Checked another plug no fire. Is it the power pak ,the optic sensor or the gererator. Love your videos.
i have the same problem that u had and today i had no spark moved the plug with 6 wires in it on powerpack got spark and started but runs bad has a bad miss trying to decide what to replace any sugestions
hi daniel did the powepack take care of the problen? I tested the temp switch and it did not come on till 230 degrees, BAD? Tested the quickstart and it does not respond to the ground, I am assuming the power pack is bad ? Any thoughts would be helpfull Thanks Chris
The engine was bogging down and missing. I narrowed it down to either the optical sensor or powerpack (ignitiion module). I used an inline spark checker and determined that the missing was occuring on all cylinders, which ruled out the coils; since they are all separate. You could also have done this with a timing light as you suggest. After changing the powerpack the engine ran much better, especially once in the water and at normal operating temp. New owner says it runs great!!!
Hi Daniel, I have a 2 stroke 1984 suzuki DT115HP, it bogged down to day and I found it to only be running on top two cylinders, no spark to 3 and 4, i changed wires from 1 and 2 to 3 and 4 and coils worked fine, asked my mechanic and he said it could also be the magneto, does this sound right that the cdi would stop on working on 2 cylinders or the magneto?
I have a video of my Johnson outboard 50hp 1982 on my page and it sounds like a back fire and a rough shake is add on top of that, could you tell me what you might think the problem is. There more info on that video I'd really appreciate it. I've been struggling to find answers on it I've cleaned the carbs adjusted the idle with no luck. -Thanks so much Taylor.
weve a johnson 60hp and runs on idle but cuts out when put in gear, the only way we could get it going was raise the engine out of the water and lower it in,at that we were gertting top speed of 7mph instead of 30plus. have you any suggestions
Daniel, I just saw your video on replacing the power back on your Johnson outboard. I have a problem with my 1990 Johnson V6 VRO. Here's the thing. I start my engine but I must run up the rpm in neutral at 3000 rpm for one minute. I take off and all is well. I am able to go 60 mph with full trim at 5500. No problem....it screams. However, here's the problem: if I go slow in a 5 mph speed zone at 500 rpm (minimal rpm) for 5 minutes, when I am out of the speed zone, I push the throttle forward and the engine will stall. The same thing happens after I sit in the water for 5 minutes with the engine off. Then...I start the engine with no problem. However, when I advance the throttle, the engine will stall...so I immediately put the throttle back into neutral. I then advance the throttle in neutral to 3000 rmp for at least one minute (same procedure at the dock). I am beside myself. The carburetors are clean, there is now few restriction. Perhaps the Quick Start is not working so the timing is not being advanced on a cold engine? However, how can the engine be cold if I have been running it at speed for a while and then slow trolling for 5 minutes. Perhaps I need a new power pack? Please help! This is quite an enigma and I am lost. Thank for your nice video. Robert Abrams (robert_abrams@comcast.net)
i have a problem close to yours. 1997 johnson 150 v6 starts and runs perfect all day but if i stop and fish for 30-45 min the motor will start but sneeze/cough and die if i give it any throttle. onece i get it to finally rev a few times im good to go again until i stop for a period of time and have the same problem all over again.
Hi Robert. I stumbled across this video looking for a solution to my problems with my 1989 Evinrude V4 VRO. Reading your message, it seems that my problems are the same as you were having. We replaced the carbies, power pac & stater, and still have the same issue of the engine stalling after it running for a longer period. Its when we are out skiing that it happens the most as we are starting & stopping regularly. Can I ask if you solved the issue with your V6 & if so, what was the solution? (apart from getting rid of it)Many thanks, Craig
Hey Robert did you ever find the solution to your problem, my 2000 Johnson 150 is doing a very similar issue and Ive been killing myself to fix it. What did you figure out if anything- PRAYING FOR A MIRACLE
Hey Dan, Watched many of your videos with outboards. My question is , how do you adjust / fine tune the high speed on a Johnson 2000 / 200hp ? Starts, idles, no problem. no hiccups . Purely a maintenance check . Does a mechanic need to do this with a timing light ? Also at WOT I'm at 4400 +- rpms. I think I should be around 54-5600? I have 15 1/4 x17 SS prop. Boat is a 21' Striper WA. Anyone with thoughts are welcome. Thanks
My dad's 175 runs like that when cold. He always said it doesn't run on all cylinders until it warms up properly and sure enough after a few minutes of running like that it corrects and runs like a top. May be nothing wrong with it
hi I'm in need of help please I have a 1997 johnson 200 osprey only cylinder 5 is misfiring it's getting fuel and has spark what the heck is wrong here? please help thank you
I have a 1991 Johnson 90 HP that seems to be in a "go slow" mode. The power head has been rebuilt and I have cleaned the carbs, but when to try to accelerate it just will not go over 5-10 mph. Any suggestions
SO what did the problem end up being, ? I got a friend with Evinrude 150 v6 outboard starts reving weird as higher speed. Sounds a lot like this video but it gets worse the fast he trys to go. what was your problem ?
Sorry I'm just seeing this. You need to troubleshoot this problem as it sounds like it could be something else. I've seen the shift interrupter switch cause this type of problem. It could be a number of things.
the same black box, i have a johnson 225HP 2stroke, i had the same problem, sometimes it didnt start and sometimes it did, when i bought a new powerpack it started on the first try :D
i have the problem that the engine wont start in the normal way, can you watch my video , evinrude engine wont start properly you can have an idea of my problem and maybe you know the problem, thanks.
Quick Start... NOT QUICK STOP...! Hey, you caught it the second time you said Quick Stop... Blue painters tape & a Sharpie... make wiring labels... Ouch... How much is a new Power Pack...?
Mine kit did not include the wires. I purchase some from Ebay for around $10 a wires. Check my channel for a video on the install. (Can't post a link.)
WTF?! I watched a 21 Minute Video and you don't even start the motor at the end? Not a good sign, you probably installed it wrong and didn't care that someone else will follow the wrong instructions... THUMBS DOWN!
Couldn't watch the whole video ..the water running made me pee too many times. You must be rich to pay that bill and not care about the planet at all!!.
The video is great with 3 exceptions.

Yes would have been nice to hear the engine run to see if misfire is gone .
You're amazing for taking your time to put that together.
i replaced my optical sensor and power pack and my motor runs great thanks so much
Nice job Daniel. Wish I had you around when I am working on my 175 Ocean Pro!
This thing sounds amazing when you revel it up
I had to do same thing to my Merc. would run great on the muffs but when in the water stalled unless I revved it and trimmed it down into the water. It ended up being an intermittently failing ignition coil. Runs great now.
did you have to take off the paper on the power pak ? you said you left it on...please confirm.
They say, the waters still running to this very day
thank you share this video.
You were in the way a lot where you couldn't really see what you were doing, also you said you might have to replace the optical eye and power pack did you replace the optical eye too or is that part of the power pack
Did the cdi pack look bad at all? Mine is a 99 but somehow it still looks perfect and I'm afraid to pay 400 bucks for something that isn't broke

I wanted to see it run!!! I think I have the same issue. My evinrude 120 sounds exactly like yours and shakes, does a power pack kit come with new wires?
Did it work? Was that the fix?
yeah, question is .... did it start and run ok?

prop : 14.5 x 19 pitch aluminum, 5700 rpm at wot. 1996 Johnson ocean runner 200. Could try a similar prop.
@@jacoblee6304 hey Dan, THANK YOU for getting back to me. I'll definitely try that, never reduced the diameter, just the pitch. Thanks again!!
Perform a link and sync. If you’ve got the optical sensor you will need an ignition analyzer.
My dad's 175 runs like that when cold. He always said it doesn't run on all cylinders until it warms up properly and sure enough after a few minutes of running like that it corrects and runs like a top. May be nothing wrong with it
Did you leave the water running?
Yeah... i guess. .. on a well here. Sorry.

Larry Curtis I’m having the same problem with my 2001 Johnson 90. Did you figure out the issue?
SO what did the problem end up being, ? I got a friend with Evinrude 150 v6 outboard
starts reving weird as higher speed. Sounds a lot like this video but it gets worse the fast he trys to go. what was your problem ?
+Chevelle99X -Daniel It was the powerpack and ran great after. I followed the new owner on Google+ and he uses it with no issues.
well my power pack doesn't look anything like that. Nowhere near as big. I have a 4 cyl, 90 hp Evinrude. coils are on the sides of the cylinder heads.
Sorry I'm just seeing this. You need to troubleshoot this problem as it sounds like it could be something else. I've seen the shift interrupter switch cause this type of problem. It could be a number of things.

That's great news!
It would have been more impressive if you could found the bad coil with a volt meter
Dude your the man!
I have a 77 15hp johnson runs good but wont get up on plain anymore anyone have any ideas what could be wrong THANK YOU

Mine kit did not include the wires. I purchase some from Ebay for around $10 a wires. Check my channel for a video on the install. (Can't post a link.)
Yea i mean a coil is easy to swap i just wanted to here the before and after
I have to pee now.
Leave your comments and questions here!
Did it fix the issue ?
You did not start it we dont even know if it worked lol!!
Your telling after all this he didn’t even fire it up.
Why didn't you turn off your water lol
Anyone look into using an MSD product, more specifically the MSD6A with their Blaster coil.
WTF?! I watched a 21 Minute Video and you don't even start the motor at the end?
Not a good sign, you probably installed it wrong and didn't care that someone else will follow the wrong instructions...

Where do u think the water is going ??
Back in the ground duh , we dont drink saltwater 🤣🤣🤣🤦♂️
Can't see shit unfortunately
