I really love that you explain the “why” in the techniques. Explaining color theory, effects of finishes and not shaming our preferred look while still offering alternatives is the more preferred delivery for me. Thanks.

&Lisa Thornton I’m 49 (time FLIES) and am still looking to perfect techniques. I thought I was pretty good until I started watching TH-cam. I can never get the transition shade even close - actually never heard of that term until recently - I grew up doing light all over first, lid color, then outer V (remember the Covergirl eyeshadow trio palettes ?)
I found an old picture of Maybelline eyeshadow and one looks like the Norvina palette colors. Nothing new, just new to people who grew up with UD Naked palette.

Another great tutorial Lisa. Just watched one of your older eyeshadow videos. Great tips in both. I think why the black liner doesn't look the best on you is your hair color. I have very dark brunette hair (now graying lol) and even now the black liner looks ok on me. I don't use it as much as it is aging so like you I go brown or plum now but I think hair color is what might determine it. I actually loved both looks on you. I doubt you could ever look less than stunning. ❤️❤️❤️

I'm definitely in the minority, but sometimes, I think that a darker smoked out look that you've got on your other eye can actually have an enlarging effect on the eye as well. I think what really closes the eye off is a harsh liner all the way around the eye that doesn't have any blend/ smoke accompanying it

The black eyeliner looks better with the darker shade here as well. For the brighter look, the sharp black eyeliner is too much of a contrast for her eye colour, the rest of the makeup and her skin tone. If the eyeliner on that side was lighter, more muted or smudged a bit, it would look better.

Lisa, you’re wonderful! I really needed this tutorial. I have smallish hooded eyes and wear glasses so these tips help so much. Could you please tell us which nudish color pencil you used on the lower lash line? I only have white and it’s too stark. Also can you recommend a lash product that I can use in place of mascara almost like a mascara without color. Every mascara I use winds up under my eyes! I use primer, waterproof mascara and even set my undereye with powder. Nothing helps. I’d love a colorless mascara that gives my lashes length and volume. Sorry about the long message. I appreciate your time!

Thank you so much Lisa for explaining the 'why' of each step. It actually helps me remember each step a lot easier knowing why you're doing an application. I tend to remember the why rather than the step, if that makes sense. The why puts the steps in order for me. This is a Phenomenal video so incredibly well done !!!!!! You truly have a gift for teaching :-D * Have a wonderful Easter with your family ~ Hugssss ❤️

Always a joy to watch and learn. You are an excellent teacher. Have u done a makeup brush tutorial? I hear the references of many various brushes with their brands and numbers. Then when I’m shopping I just don’t know which ones I should purchase. Even though I closely follow ur teaching videos, the brush selection is arduous. Perhaps others feel as I do? Any help you give is appreciated. If u had a brush tutorial, perhaps u can link it. Thank u.

At 57 - all these tips are exactly what I show on all my tutorials as you seen i do the nude liner the baby wing etc... and you know I don’t teach I’m no Mac trained teacher - and I mostly do bronzy looks but- I just do what works for me and my eye shape- So With hooded eyes my tutorials are all about shade and light - I cannot follow one of these cookie cutter one size fits all TH-cam tutorials where they go in with a large fluffy brush into the crease because I don’t have a crease I have a hood I have skinfold where my crease should be - elongate and lift - I don’t like a round eye look on myself- my eyes are slightly almond shape so I work with that to to keep the shape I do not the DOME shape on myself at all - you have probably seen the same technique and style in all my videos because I have found what works for me- I would suggest for somebody who maybe doesn’t like to work with liquid or gels to use eyeshadow and do a little baby wing and start about 2/3 of the way toward the back - brown or charcoal grey is also nice if someone finds black to harsh - The other thing that I find it really helpful if your eyes are slightly downturn is to have the liner a little bit thicker towards the end and then as you get towards the inner corner I just stamp the liner along the route of the lash line using a flat to find a brush and the line gets very thin towards the inner corner so it’s a little bit thicker towards the outer corner if that makes sense so what that’s doing is just basically creating the illusion that your eye is actually a little bit more lifted up or turned up and not down turned! Again no Mac trained professional here just an old lady who has learned how to work with her eye shape! Your a good teacher and instructor I wish you could redo all my tutorials!

Thank you for explaining things in such detail. I'm a 55yo M2F transgender woman newbe and alone without friends to show me anything and makeup is so very hard for me just because I don't know anything about it or more importantly having the correct tools. My hole life I have turned wrenches on everything so I know how having the right tools for the job is the difference between success or failure, and I'm not good at failure. I know I am some how going to have to find out what these brush numbers are and what # does what. I've also done a lot of custom pearl and candy paintings on cars and bikes so I'm familiar with shading and making things pop or fade so I have the ability in me but I'm really a show me in every detail no matter how small once and I've got it. But all the primers and brushes. I have a hole set of brushes that they give me not one hint for each one's use that I just have to try and guess. I wasn't even aware of fading like you was doing, so any of my makeup is very little and I just don't have a starting point. Like people say get this and that and don't say what they do or why or what happens if I don't do this. I'm let to find what is being called a setting powder. I see nothing in the store that says setting anything and get frustrated and just walk away. I could give you a list of things to customize you car or replace a sink fixtures or whatever for you to pick-up but if I list it in a gear head slang term instead of what's on the package your looking for like Monkey Wrench you would never find it because there's really no such thing it is an adjustable pipe wrench in sizes from one inch up to a 60" that I have used. That a 5 foot long wrench. You get the point and I have gotten side tracked and am sorry. You did the best job breaking this down more than any other 101 tutorial even by transgender woman I have been able to comprehend. And I'm not the only one out here having trouble just finding a starting point. This is a new Era of transgender people who has lived a fake life like myself for a half century and has had options for once in our lives to change and we are starting as infant's nearly and have hardly anyone that wants to be around us let alone teach us the basic of the simplest things.

Love your videos!!! I do have a question though, clearly most of us hope to get the lifted effect on the right side, however, there are so many dark shimmering eyeshadows on the market, I am sure we all have that dark brown shimmering eyeshadow, how to use those then in a way to be flattering and have that same effect? Maybe you could make a new video to teach us?

Wow Lisa your right eye is way brighter than the left one and I'm loving that because I'm in my mid 60s I love that kind of technique because of my age so I need to have my eyes seen as large as possible lol

look, but the darker color is nice too! It enhances the eye. Kind of tough choice here. The lighter colors are more natural looking, but the darker shades add drama. Kind of a tough call, but lighter colors do open eye. You do such a great job illustrating to us! 99% of the time I just use mascara and a little liner, but I might try practicing with the shadows.

Proof that you can teach an “old” dog new tricks. I am 55 and love learning from your techniques videos. I’d love to know how to change things when you have a huge brow bone space. My lids are slightly hooded, but I have a high arch on my minimal brows creating a lot of real estate in between my brows and lids. Help!

Same here, and the area is sort of flat. I love my eyes and think they are my best feature. When I was younger and my face was fuller, they were almost Asian in appearance. Now that I’m older, and have lost some of the fullness in my face, my upper eyelid is more visible, but I still have that large area above the lid with no obvious crease. I’ve had my makeup done by pros, and never was really happy with the way they tried to invent a crease on me. It really doesn’t work. Darker shadow colors look awful on me. If you look at actresses with the same sort of eyelid anatomy, like Renee Zellwiger before she had her plastic surgery, or even Helen Mirren now, it’s best to just use a lighter, softer, single shade on the lid, maybe a little bit of liner and a lighter shimmery shade on the lower lid, followed by lots of mascara- this is the most flattering look for our type of eye. Yes, it would be fun to have an obvious crease and do all these great eyeshadow looks, but outside of having plastic surgery, it’s never going to happen for me.

That was brilliant, thanks Lisa!! By now I can't really do an eyeliner as it diminishes the "Real Estate" of light colour created on the lid. I just do a hint on the outer corner to lift. The right eye is pretty if you're young and have lots to play with ;) Thanks again and Happy Easter!

This was great info as I have large eyes and am never sure if I can put light or dark on my mobile lid, but now I know exactly how to make colors work for me. I really like you videos because you do explain how & why things work. Thanks 😍

What a wonderful, knowledgeable teacher you are!! I have learned so much from you. Question: concealer before or after foundation? Setting powder under the eyes? I appreciate your answer. No one else responds.

    • @lisajmakeup
      @lisajmakeup  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Aww, thank you Kathleen! So I do both sometimes... no right or wrong... but if you like to use your concealer to highlight your face then I say do it before and avoid using foundation over the areas you've applied concealer so it doesn't get too heavy... the benefit of doing foundation first is you can see how far your foundation covers and end up using less concealer than needed. hope that helps!
