How does the steam release reward mindless farming more than the alpha? I agree with every other point but the alpha progression was largely: kill any enemy -> gain xp.
one thing about the game that i always thought was so cool as a kid was the Spirit Cube mechanic, which as far as i can tell was the only actual gameplay mechanic that made use of the games voxels, it was where you could add blocks to your weapons to give them special stats. the problem was that you only got spirit cubes from beating bosses, which was hard enough given how the game was balanced, and a boss would only give a single cube, meaning it would take AGES to get any meaningful upgrades to your weapons through them. i always imagined being able to craft your own awesome looking weapon block by block but that simply wouldve taken too long to ever do (and apparently they removed this whole system in the Steam release anyway lol)
I was a kid and I was super bummed out why I couldn't get lots of spirit cubes and customize my armor etc. So I remember going on forums/youtube hoping to find a solution, and it was hacking/modding the game with Cheat Engine, so I found a super lengthy tutorial and applied it and was super happy lol.
Oh man I totally forgot about that mechanic. It was actually one of the coolest things and I am once again sad it is gone. @@amberb9701 Ahh it's a community project, makes sense. Would do wonders if it launched on Steam for very cheap or free honestly. Don't feel like people know about the project outside of semi-hardcore Cube World fans. Being open source and a community project is very cool though.
Paper Mario Sticker Star came out Nov 11 2012. This game came out in alpha in 2013 and in beta 2014-2015. How, on God's green earth, did this man think getting rid of XP and leveling would be a good direction to go in.
I never played Cube World but i did hear about it a lot when i was younger. It has a very recognizable "Indie Lighting" thing going on, which is this sort of trope where really good indie games all have the same weird kind of lighting unusual-ness that Cube World has. Hey friend, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your channel and what you're doing here. Keep up the good work as stay amazing as you are! :)
I actually get the whole, loot not for your class thing, if you are a first time player you get to see what stuff other classes get and could intrigue one to try that class sometime. That being said it makes sense if the shops have awesome stuff for you class and you can get good money from the none applicable items to get that. It worked in earlier diablos, dungeon siege, sacred, boulders gate 1and 2 etc.
Thanks for the video Dialko. Cube World is the game that shouldn't have failed, but it did. A game with the potential to be a classic of indie gaming. Wollay really should have taken the chance to work with Mojang on the game when they offered him help way back then. The new Cube World he is making is the last chance he will ever get from me to redeem himself and it better not be another game I need to buy since I own the Cube World Steam and Alpha versions. :)
Man I really loved playing the original release. Sure the content was kinda limited but booting up the pc and playing with friends after school was simply fun.
i would really love to see a version with alpha core gameplay, but with all the quests, varied dungeons and structures etc from the steam release. maybe the new "omega" version will do that, but i honestly wish wollay would just rework the steam version to make it play more like alpha again and release it as a free update. sure, it might take a lot of work, maybe up to a year, but now he's working on a whole new version in a different engine, meaning i'll probably be like 30 when we get to play it, with no guarantee it will be what we want D:
Cube World was such an amazing experience when I played it w my friends when it first came out, the art and world looked beautiful it really filled me with wonder. It's the best world generation I've ever seen in a game. It seemed limitless when thinking about what it would be in the future. It is sad to see what happened to it
I remember watching Etho's Lab's let's play of this back when it was popular, but even then I saw that the game was kind of mis-sold as the "Minecraft Killer," as these games were going for very different things. Those were still good times.
I remeber 16 y/o me playing this game in the summer before my junior year of high school. I liked this game a lot because it had that blissful "emptiness" and "wonder" from early minecraft exploration (not building) and added combat and skill based movement that could be very personalized. At the time I hadn't experienced a Dark Souls game yet but I remeber loving playing with heavy melee weapons in CW, this joy carried over in dark souls 3 a few years later (CW did it better I think, don't hate me). I still have the launcher file for the OG game but I don't think I can recover my account since I used an old pre 2010's email address. The greatest thing about CW back then was its simplicity and unique vibe, mostly due to all the cool combat sounds.
I vaguely remember people talking about this way back when. Never really got around to it myself, since I didn't have a computer as a kid, but if the upcoming update is good, maybe I'll finally get around to it.
All they had to add some more things like 1-Stats (str, int, dex, hp, armor, mana) to equipments (They will be scaled with levels and rarity and randomly upgraded from drop. So for example, you found a wand with 103 intelligence point and another wand you dropped can have 120 intelligence) 2-more skills for each class (for example stealth based skill tree for dagger classes that makes you dash and be invisible, gain a burst of movement speed for a short period of time and if you attack an enemy while you're invis, you deal super crit. Or you can choose a bleed skill path. Maybe you're a intelligence based mage who using daggers so you got a poison skill path and have more magical abilities like spawning a copy of you or leeching opponents' soul by hitting them) 3- more complicated food system. Different ingredient roosters for each biome and every ingredient gives you different temporary buffs and you can combine them in a cooking pot to get a better food that fits best for your choice and game style. For example, you got a glowing seaweed from ocean biome which will give you a mana shield as you deal magic damage. And you combined that ingredient with mana flux which is dropped by an enemy from dessert biome. Mana flux gives you cooldown reduction so it synergises with glowing seaweed. But if you're playing with skills that have already low cooldowns, you can choose another ingredient which gives you mana regen speed. I just threw those ideas from my head right now. Imagine how creative things they can bring with those (like shooting flaming skulls with each hit for dexterity based on hit builds or so) 4- pets that are actually good. Most pets are the same in cube world. Some of them just bulkier or some of them has range. But it could be better. Every pet in game could have unique abilities that can make you synergise with your build to engage you to create your own playstyle and prevent people from making a meta. For example, If you're a arrow user, an armadillo pet that has ability to take aggro of enemies to take them off you. Or if you built a non mobile melee build, a fire slime pet that exploding on death and spreading lava would be synergised with you because enemies will attack you and you're a tank. So lava covered floor can deal non stop burn dmg to enemies that you're dealing. Or I'll double down, let's say that you're playing a caster mage build. An magical pixie pet can absorb enemies mana per hit and give that mana to you. So what happens is you can chose a pet that have his own unique ability of your own. 5- costumizeable equipments. This mechanic exists in alpha too. You can put spirits to your weapons to enhance it's abilities. This mechanic can be carried to a better state. For example a spirit that will be charged every time you hit enemy with weapon it attached. And when it's charged, your next attack will zap chain your enemies and stun them for a 0.5 second, slowing them for 3 second. You can use it to kite your enemy. Or a spirit that leechs hp every time you hit. I still have too many things in my head that would make this game a game of the year easily. But I'm tired. So much wasted potential. I hope our kids will see omega version and it will be good.
Yeah, I heard about cube world way back then. I was really into it, I had been excited for it since alpha and been keeping up with the dev's extremely rare progress updates. I was there when the steam release was announced in 2019... I was like "wow no way, it finally happened?" and then it came out... I admit I don't have any faith in whatever rework the dev says will eventually happen. He's CLEARLY out of touch with what most people liked about it, and it seems he and his wife were the only people to playtest it. I mean it's been 11 years now, and look where the game is compared to its first public release.
I was obsessed with this game when I was younger. I remember looking for seeds in order to find an upgraded laturn in a town. It seems like they made the alpha and then vanished for years just to come back and disappoint
I remember seeing it, and I don't remember how I found out about it but when I did I couldn't figure out how to download it so that was basically it for me and then I forgot about it until I saw another video about it then this video reminded me again and now I feel sad that I missed out on the alpha it's a shame honestly
I played the old and current cube world, had give potential. It's still a game id recommend to people to play and try, just a breath of fresh air type of game.
I saw the original trailer while surfing TH-cam on our home Mac computer that I had time to use every day before getting an iPad. Wanted it so bad lol, one of the first games I found myself and was excited for. Was a Nintendo kid
I wonder how long into the future Cube World will be talked about... Loved the alpha and also put more time into it than I likely should have, but I don't foresee ever getting the proper continuation we had hoped for. A shame honestly, because it truly was such a strong foundation with so much room for growth. If only Wollay had a stronger mentality and the possibility of working with a few others who shared his core vision was on the table. 🤷♂
This dev was given a golden goose and all they had to do was make the game and walk off into the sunset. Instead they fucked their chance and ruined the game and will continue to languish in obscurity. 'Luck' is just patience + preparation. This guy was neither patient or prepared.
I remember a couple of people i followed playing it on youtube and i was excited for future updates, then i saw no one playing it anymore and thought it was cancelled
I’m ngl. I personally like how long it takes to travel in Alpha. At least for me, it gives a sense of fulfillment when I finally reach whatever destination
The region system is so crippling. I could see the region system working if it was a reputation mechanic, where people in that region's towns would give you better or harder quests once they started recognizing your skill. Obviously people in different regions wouldn’t know your reputation somewhere else, so you need to work toward building that up again. But losing your gear is never fun.
It’s just frustrating to see someone be at the right place, at the right time, with the right product and just throw it all away

Seen it. Like it. Might play it. What's the reason for it being free though? Surely it would be pretty popular on Steam as an early access for a couple of bucks no?
@@TheBloopers30It’s a community project and open source like Linux.
@@amberb9701 Ahh it's a community project, makes sense. Would do wonders if it launched on Steam for very cheap or free honestly. Don't feel like people know about the project outside of semi-hardcore Cube World fans.
Being open source and a community project is very cool though.
veloren is goated, super super early but plenty of gameplay to experience in its current state, arachnaphobes beware tho!!
I definitely remember Cube World being huge. All the TH-camrs I watched when that game came out played it.
Me and my brother just played through Alpha. Neat that this popped up on my feed today
The alpha weapon crafting/upgrading system was so cool
A Cube World video? Liked.
love this content. keep it up dude :) such a chill authentic and fun vibe
Absolutely LOVE this video, please keep doing more!
You are too kind :) will do
Paper Mario Sticker Star came out Nov 11 2012. This game came out in alpha in 2013 and in beta 2014-2015. How, on God's green earth, did this man think getting rid of XP and leveling would be a good direction to go in.
Honestly I think a big part of the problem was he barely got any feedback and no play testing for years
I never played Cube World but i did hear about it a lot when i was younger. It has a very recognizable "Indie Lighting" thing going on, which is this sort of trope where really good indie games all have the same weird kind of lighting unusual-ness that Cube World has. It's super noticable here but also in Trove, early Roblox, and my favorite example, Darwinia. God I love Darwinia.
Darwinia mentioned!!
@@beytullahberk3632you're the first person I've seen say anything about darwinia online outside of the soundtrack comments.... 🌝
@@-._Radixerus_.- Same here man, in this comment section of all places lol. Not many people know about it but it's definitely an rts classic. I even have a darwinian standing in my living room! (i made it by glueing and painting wooden cubes)
Thank you for always making interesting content dude, love everything you post dude
i like the relaxed atmosphere of your videos and your voice is also very nice, keep it up 👍
Its kinda crazy how much hype this game had during that first youtuber push, and seeing what became of it all these years later.
I remember in 2014 when Watch Dogs was about to come out and all the big TH-camrs where saying, and the GTA V online community was worried that, it would be the end of GTA V online.
Ah yes, Watch Dogs, my "true next-gen experience"
@@Myne1001 Funny how we were disappointed with it and it not comparing to GTA V but the sequel to its own sequel is even worse. (Legion)
I knew about the is game! I still have the beta or the alpha, one of the older versions, on my PC. Still fun to play occasionally. I watched all of Bdouble0100’s old videos on this.
Your voice is so soothing, honestly just nice to listen to and it fits so well with reviewing old basic games :)
The devs would probably be so happy hearing you compliment all the tiny little atmospheric details they worked on.
I played some of the earliest versions of this game many years ago. It was fun, but buggy and not enough content to explore. It's very funny that your video caught my attention, I had even forgotten that Cube World existed.
holy crap i remember cube world

I vividly remember the hype behind this game and how it was dubbed the "Minecraft Killer" for a while, kinda want to get back into it
Cubeworld... what a throw back. Never played it but remember my friend playing it on his laptop.
Really like the atmosphere of this as well. Reminds me a loooottt of trove.
Young me, who was scared of asking for my parents debit card, scoured the internet for a free version of Cube World alpha. Found it, played it for a while and setup coop through Hamachi to play with 2 friends, after a few days we got bored and just went back to cracked Minecraft. Got into it because a bunch of TH-camrs I followed were hyping the game up

Very nicely summarized. Was a good overview of the cubeworld history. I hope the story ends well. Wollay has it in his hands and I hope he does something with it. Thanks for your video😊

time for a runescape vid with all these runeytunes you use
Ah but that would require me to play RuneScape again, which is risky

Hey friend, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your channel and what you're doing here.
Keep up the good work as stay amazing as you are! :)
Glad I'm not the only one who remembers Cube World. I am also cautiously optimistic about the new version
1:01 it was huge and I couldn't believe it when I got to play the alpha. Just went downhill fast
"click til you win sort of rpg" as Scape Main is playing lmao
Those were still good times.
i totally forgot about this game, i thought about it time to time and thought it was trove but it was this game all along!
Man i remember being fucking obsessed with cube world!! Another killer video from the based Judeau enjoyer!!!
I vaguely remember people talking about this way back when. Never really got around to it myself, since I didn't have a computer as a kid, but if the upcoming update is good, maybe I'll finally get around to it.
All they had to add some more things like
1-Stats (str, int, dex, hp, armor, mana) to equipments (They will be scaled with levels and rarity and randomly upgraded from drop. So for example, you found a wand with 103 intelligence point and another wand you dropped can have 120 intelligence)
2-more skills for each class (for example stealth based skill tree for dagger classes that makes you dash and be invisible, gain a burst of movement speed for a short period of time and if you attack an enemy while you're invis, you deal super crit.
Or you can choose a bleed skill path. Maybe you're a intelligence based mage who using daggers so you got a poison skill path and have more magical abilities like spawning a copy of you or leeching opponents' soul by hitting them)
3- more complicated food system.
Imagine how creative things they can bring with those (like shooting flaming skulls with each hit for dexterity based on hit builds or so)
4- pets that are actually good.
OMG U'RE BACK HIIII missed u 😭☝️
Good video btw, I really enjoyed :]
I mean it's been 11 years now, and look where the game is compared to its first public release.
never really found a game that felt as adventurous the same way as cube world alpha, god please let cube world omega be good
I was obsessed with this game when I was younger.
I played it as well. Was really excited when it came out.
I LOVED this game, it always breaks my heart when I remember what happened to it...
i got hooked on this game for at least a good few weeks
I remembered cube world, I haven't played it. But I would love to play it.
I remember playing this game and then it just going away basically. I loved playing it though for that short time I did!
I saw the original trailer while surfing TH-cam on our home Mac computer that I had time to use every day before getting an iPad. Wanted it so bad lol, one of the first games I found myself and was excited for. Was a Nintendo kid
love ur vids so much
Oh man, I LOVED this game when it came out!
Good video! By the way, your character has the same eye and hair color as mine. 😹💛
I have good memories of playing Cube World, though my gaming palette was not very refined at that age.
I remember playing the alpha all the way back in 2013! Personally I hope we all get the cube world we always wanted lol
This dev was given a golden goose and all they had to do was make the game and walk off into the sunset. Instead they fucked their chance and ruined the game and will continue to languish in obscurity. 'Luck' is just patience + preparation. This guy was neither patient or prepared.
I'll hop on sometimes and play this game for a couple of hours. One every couple of months. I've had a lot of fun with Cube World.
I remember a couple of people i followed playing it on youtube and i was excited for future updates, then i saw no one playing it anymore and thought it was cancelled
At the time we didn’t realize Minecraft was going to last 15+ years.
Game at that time were popular for like one year max.
I’m ngl. I personally like how long it takes to travel in Alpha. At least for me, it gives a sense of fulfillment when I finally reach whatever destination
i miss this game, didnt have opportunity to play it while it was popular
To think Wollay actually got a job offer by Mojang back in the day
He did as far as I know. Not sure what happened with that though
It has been mentioned in a few other comments but I have to say: Veloren.
Although, Cube World did have its own unique charm.
I was crazy hype about Cube Word. I even modded the game with custom models. Game felt great. Would still play.
I knew about Cubeworld the year it was announced, as a tween who loved Minecraft this game was fixing PvE in a direction I enjoyed :D
Cubeworld is my Roman Empire
I remember playing cube world when it was in that early alpha stage, then we get that crazy long decade wait for nothing.
