THEORY: Sephiroth's End Motive NOT Evil? | Final Fantasy 7 Remake

  • Final Fantasy Peasant back with another FF7 Remake theory on the great villain himself... Sephiroth! After my God Cloud theory I thought it deserving that we explore what Sephiroth might be after in his wild unique new appearance in the final fantasy 7 remake. Theres gonna be big spoilers for everything, all the way to the end of the remake, the end of OG Final Fantasy 7, theme songs from the soundtrack, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core and the lot! The end story cutscene post final boss battle will be a particular focus of attention for this theory. So what do you think, could the Final Fantasy 7 Remake explore a whole different motive of Sephiroth we might not see coming?

    • @TeamGXOne
      @TeamGXOne ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@Killer_Kris7 First off, Sephiroth controlling Jenova, who wiped out the Ancients and is a millennia old cosmic entity, is what's stupid. EVEN if that's the case, then the writers would be the dumbbells because that LOGICALLY doesn't make any sense, on many levels.
Secondly, I subscribe to the Japanese interpretation, no the English one. And I'm friends with Japanese players that state there's a definitive difference in translation and with JPN players, its interpreted as Jenova being in control. Yes, Sephiroth DOES control Jenova in terms of its cells and its powers, but the mastermind is Jenova.
Don't believe me? It's in the Reunion Files that all Sephiroth and the Remnants do is to serve JENOVA'S will "not Sephiroth". Also, everything about Advent Children was about Jenova's will, that Sephiroth was Jenova's favorite, and how that hurt Kadaj though he continued to serve what JENOVA wanted.
Anyway... I hope that Sephiroth will break free of Jenova's grip, be part of Jenova's final downfall, and move on to reshape his identity, as an antihero.

It always seemed to me like whatever remained intact of Jenova's consciousness just kinda "rolled with it", because his goals aligned with her own aspirations. 🤷‍♂️ Then again, my first half-dozen playthroughs were in the mind and eyes of a 10 year-old, so my predisposition might be a little tinted. lol

It is Jenova if you look at Crisis Core it makes far more sense. Sephi use to be a descent human that would lay down his life for a friend. It was in Nibelheim that he lost his mind. Only because Jenova was heavily fcking with his mind and was easily seduced. The closer those get who have Jenova cells the harder it is for them to resist Jenovas influence. This goes right along with the Reunion Therory. Jenova cells demand that they return to it. Cloud has a strong will. Sephiroth lost everyone he cared about and believed he was all alone I believe he lost his will. Jenova is a cancer to the Planet even her cells posion the lifestream.

I just noticed something in the fight with cloud and sephiroth at the edge of creation. it looks as if Sephiroth has fought cloud in the same way many times before and he's bored of the fight. He moves around almost lazily and effortlessly as he predicts all of his attacks. What if he's in a perpetual cycle and he's trying to get out. He keeps trying different things to see if he can diverge the timeline enough.

My theory is that Unknown Sephiroth is essentially a time traveler many centuries older than the Sephiroth from the original timeline.
We know from the original timeline that the result hundreds of years in the future is a world with Midgar in ruins and no apparent sign of human life. It is possible that Sephiroth requires humanity to live to some extent and therefore needs to go back in time to enlist assistance from the strongest people he knows, in order to prevent whatever it is that destroys humanity.
If so, Unknown Sephiroth would have the experience of centuries, and even recall the fight in Final Fantasy: Advent Children. He'd be very good at predicting Cloud's moves. But his ultimate goal would be to get Cloud's cooperation and, just as important, make him stronger.

      @marcus24000 No lol.
Sephiroth has always taunted Cloud. In fact, it's one his biggest weaknesses, his arrogance, even before he went insane. Like in AC when he purposely stabs Cloud in the shoulder rather than through the heart.
Sephiroth doesn't want Cloud gone because he can control Cloud as JENOVA's cells exist inside of him. That's it. Such as when he makes Cloud give him the Black Materia in the original.
He is not a good guy, and this theory is pretty dumb.

@Zaw Torley Same with the Malboro. It’s a lot easier though. You just have to keep your distance from it and switch characters regularly to attack it from behind while using magic carefully to keep everyone alive by the frequent use of healing and regen spells. Ranged units are very useful there! Aerith’s Lutrous Shield also helps a lot to get there as it blocks the Tonberries’ paralysing ranged attack.
The Malboro was so much more of a threat in Crisis Core... If you didn’t have a ribbon equipped facing it meant death. I guess they had to make it easier since we had no ribbon(s) this time... I’d have liked if it was faster and all around harder though as it felt like a walk in the park to me, I wonder why. Maybe because I've seen worse and knew what precautions to take...? :)

Sephiroth seems genuinely disappointed. The only way to properly write his redemption arc is that he dies for good trying to save Cloud from Jenova, as they team up in one finale battle against her in her most powerful and complete form. There would be nowhere for Sephiroths character to go if he survives, just like Darth Vader. Vader, as sad as it was, had to die to make up for his mistakes to bring a proper ending to his character.

I’ve been saying that Sephiroth is a good guy this time around. Well, 1 of them is. People forget that for most of his life Sephiroth was basically FF7’s Captain America. He defended the weak, cares for his fellow SOLDIERS and just wanted to have a place to belong. If he had been nurtured by the same kind of love and support Cloud had, things might have turned out very differently.
Future Sephiroth may have realized that (in very typical JRPG fashion) the power of friendship is the reason why Sephiroth kept losing to Cloud.
Also, imagine this, Sephiroth gets turned into a good guy, his tragedy gets fleshed out, we discover how lonely and isolated he was. How his life was nothing but manipulation and deception, while he sacrificed for others around him. Then we get a redemption arc and he becomes friendly with the party, then HE dies. Completely flipping our feelings for Sephiroth around. That would be fucking epic.

Moreover, if he just wanted to ensure victory, why not just kill Cloud there. He wins decisively and the whispers were gone, so why not just end it there? Nothing to stop him.
There’s also the line he says to Aerith about “Those who see with clouded eyes see nothing but shadows” this is basically hitting the audience over the head with “THINGS ARE NOT AS THEY SEEM”. Aerith and this Future Sephiroth are not equal on this playing field. He clearly knows something she doesn’t and he’s pointing it out. wAIT. SUDDEN REALIZATION.
Going on the Sephiroth splitting himself into different versions/pieces idea. The Remnants in AC are literally physical manifestations of Sephiroth’s will as created by him from his place in the Lifestream. Each of them are supposed represent different parts of him- Yazoo has his outward personality (arguably his OG Crisis Core personality, his aloof disposition yet almost miss-able competitiveness), Loz has his physical strength, and Kadaj has his hatred and disdain for humanity and it’s failures.
Kadaj was the only Remnant that achieved Reunion (notice he says “MY Reunion” when absorbing Jenova’s neck, implying that other Reunions are possible and the drive for Reunion isn’t the drive for some singular, wide-reaching event). When Cloud fought and defeated this version of Sephiroth, I think it did something permanent to the vessel it inhabited at the time, Kadaj, and also to the piece of Sephiroth’s will that gave Kadaj form.
Pause. Bring it around to Aerith’s Great Gospel, which was triggered when Kadaj attacked the church. The water from the spring completely CURES Geostigma, which is said to be a disease caused by the infection of Jenova’s genetic material. Great Gospel dissolves it like it was never there. It also has an interesting affect on the Remnants. Kadaj cringes from it and runs away as if it stings. When it rains on Loz and Yazoo after Kadaj’s death, a black haze begins to form around them as if in response to it, despite the green “heal”ing of it uselessly flickering around their bodies. This effect is NOT present in a dying Kadaj despite also being fully under the rain.
Great Gospel wreaks havoc on Jenova’s genetic material, Geostigma and the Remnants by extension. This paired with the fact that Kadaj was weakened and vulnerable enough from his Reunion and Cloud’s fight meant that Great Gospel could work on him in a way that it couldn’t work on Loz and Yazoo- and he died in a way I’ve NEVER seen anything related to Sephiroth or Jenova die; he dissolves into PURE lifestream at Aerith’s invitation.
Loz and Yazoo didn’t die this way, so the bits of Sephiroth’s will that they carried- his personality and his strength- those things returned to him. The corruption that Jenova influences makes it impossible for for Sephiroth to be absorbed into the Lifestream, but Aerith and Cloud working together were able to PURIFY a piece of Sephiroth and Kadaj dissolved NATURALLY.
If Remake Sephiroth is also a Post-Advent Children Sephiroth, what would that destruction of his Hatred for Humanity mean for him and how he carries himself??

      @pangerbaun8477 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Dead Man
That’s true! But originally, while hating humanity, he didn’t bother giving them a chance to redeem themselves because he thought they were a lost cause. Sephiroth assumed the position of Judge, Jury, and Executioner and never bothered giving Humanity a trial. Cloud was only a tool/puppet for him to achieve his means, he didn’t have any intrinsic value to Sephiroth other than that Sephiroth was a little amused that Cloud could actually take him on and hold his own. Cloud was human too, and therefore he didn’t deserve anything but for his worth to be dismissed as object of derision (puppet). His favorite puppet, but a toy, none the less.
In the remake, I’m getting the feeling that he’s allowing Cloud to debate humanity’s worthiness. Which is actually a huge difference from his original mindset. He originally damned humanity and that was that; end of story. No arguments even considered because they mean nothing. But now he’s actually giving Cloud the chance to prove something about them. Without that Hatred, he still thinks humanity is poison, but he’s willing to see if Cloud can prove him wrong. Cloud, who, REPEATEDLY had defeated him and been the ONLY person who can actually hold his own against Sephiroth. Sephiroth, who fully believes that he is a God. What would that make Cloud, then, if he can repeatedly kill a God?
EQUAL to him, at the least. This man, previously no more than a puppet or a tool to be used, disgustingly HUMAN, previously BENEATH him along with the rest of humanity, Sephiroth now considers as his EQUAL. His RIVAL. To be examined. To be taken seriously. To be approached in a more deliberate way than that of a child with a magnifying glass pointed at an anthill.
That’s why he wants Cloud to experience grief and pain and despair and become stronger from it; will Cloud retain that righteousness? Or will he become twisted in hate, fear, and greed as well, proving Sephiroth’s opinion of humanity’s true nature? If the first, then the planet and Sephiroth will become whatever Cloud wishes for them. If the second, if Cloud fails, then he will either join Sephiroth or he will die along with the rest of the planet as they all deserve.
Cloud’s EXISTENCE is the trial in which humanity will be judged. The destruction of Sephiroth’s Hatred is how he now ALLOWS this trial to be held. The question now is what will Sephiroth do if Cloud wins this time around. This loss, for Sephiroth, will have a much more significant meaning than previous losses. If he loses everytime, what’s the point of repeating the cycle aside from it being for his own amusement? Will he establish another means of returning from the dead that DON’T depend on Cloud’s existence? Will he lay dormant until Cloud no longer exists to act on the planet, if he even can exist without Cloud? Will he give up on the planet as a whole and hitch a ride on a Meteor to travel to a different planet and become a new Jenova?

  • @laxking251
    @laxking251 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Sephiroth exists outside the cycle of the lifestream and the planet because in the Lifestream Black and Lifestream White chapters of nojimas book you find out sephiroth made cloud the core of his being and that as long as he has cloud and people remember him he can manifest without a body(which explains why at first nobody can see him but as cloud reminds people of him or talks about him, he becomes more real so to speak and eventually they all can see him because they remember him. This also explains why palmer could see him because he's the only one other than hojo who remembered him clearly.) Cloud is essentially a horcrux for sephiroth which explains why he never died and why the new mysterious sephiroth starts appearing wherever cloud goes. Because cloud is projecting him. After OG FF7 Sephiroth threw away all his memories of himself and his appearance in order to not return to the planet and exist in the lifestream. He then realizes that he can make cloud his vessel so to speak in order to learn about himself and his appearance again. He then searches the lifestream for a suitable form (that being kadaj) and then made two companions to help his avatar achieve his goal of getting jenovas head. At the finale of AC cloud beats sephiroth but his plan to make him his core was already complete so he disappears and goes back through the lifestream to try to obtain information on himself that he lost in the lifestream and to alter the outcome of FF7 having obtained all the information about his defeat through the lifestream. Aerith who also chose not to return to the planet senses him doing this so she decides to do the same and wonders if she could make remnants of herself as well but decides not to make any so that it doesn't affect clouds memory of her. Cloud has to die for sephiroth to be defeated. He has the last bit of jenovas cells inside him, as long as they exist the Reunion will persist. The final sephiroth you encounter at the edge of creation is his core which is why it is the sane sephiroth who uses "ore" and not "watashi". So the wormhole and edge of creation are actually in clouds mind which makes so much more sense. So when cloud tells everyone a detailed story about sephiroth in kalm town in part two it will be a huge moment for sephiroth as people will remember him much more vividly and he will have knowledge of his appearance which in turn allows him to start creating/repairing his body in the crystal in North Crater.

Someone who's now trying to shape their own destiny, take things too much into their own hands and willing to cut anyone down who gets in his way. That's a good transition of Sephiroth breaking away from Jenova, to returning to who he was prior, and it allows him to still maintain a rivalry with Cloud, but without being "evil".

@@the1bigbadwolf well... she's not dead now, and I don't think killing her this time around will benefit either version of Sephiroth (the evil one, or [potentially] good one). I strongly believe Aerith is not going to be killed by Seph, and if she does die, it's by something else, if not her own self sacrifice.
The only thing problematic is the Niebelheim incident. But if (EOC/good) Seph is smart, he can blame that on Jenova. It won't be easy but he does have that bit of an out.
But like I said, Seph wouldn't join Cloud and the gang if he does get a redemptive arc (or at least its highly unlikely). I think Seph would become an antihero who's still at odds with Cloud, but no longer is evil/under the influence of evil.
This theory is a bit "controversial" for some fans, but one of my friends said she feels a great twist (one some of us prolly see coming) is Seph to find out he's Cetra, and Jenova has been in the way of that side of him all along. This could be the trigger for him to finally overcome Jenova for once and for all, but now... his new "villainy" if you will, is him believing the Planet is his heritance, and starts taking a number of matters into his own hands, thus the new rivalry between himself and Cloud, and him becoming a new type of threat (possibly more powerful than before). However, with his intent not being (inherently) evil (similarly to Shadow), there will be times we get Seph's newfound path as heroic... even if it still clashes with the protagonists.
He already makes a statement kind of like this IN FF7R, and we really don't believe it's just said "nilly willy". It definitely seems there's going to be a lot more to that in upcoming games.

    Thoughts watching this video:
    1. Jenova totally sounds like the FFXV Starscourge parasite. Not the same entity, but the same type/species of galactic, planet preying parasite. If this parasite exists in the galactic ecology, then each planet/star system may have it's own way of fighting it - or failing to fight it.
    2. Multiple Sephs blew my mind. This makes things so much clearer.
    3. Please, please let Vincent be Sephiroth's father.
    4. "On the way to a smile" says Cloud's memories form the core of AC Sephiroth. But now Zack is alive again, and Zack holds memories of Pre-Jenova Sephiroth from CC. What if Zack surviving is actually the whole focus of unknown Sephiroth forcing a redo of this part of the timestream - if anyone can influence Cloud to look more favourably on Seph, it will be Zack
4a. If CC Cloud shows up alongside Remake Cloud in future episode, I'd like CC Cloud to dual/multi wield swords from the get go. Making Cloud's single large sword thing be mainly Zack's influence.
    5. Bring on the Sephiroth Redemption Arc!!
6 or 1a. The whole Jenova=Starscourge parasite thing is giving me ideas for FFXV. Specifically how the Cetra could have used Jenova as a physical Starscourge vessel that could be trapped and locked away safely>> Ardyn? Except Bahamut does one better and makes the Crystal as a way to destroy the consolidated Starscourge together with it's vessel afterwards.

You sound like it, but your reaction to multiple Sephs (I always saw them as manifestations of his will through the Lifestream/and via the robed men[Hojo JENOVA experiments])made me fuzzled, unless you mean that there might be timeline-overlapping Sephiroths, that thought does mess up my mind too. I like your thoughts, would like to know what you think about Zack being alive again what it COULD change, I'm sick right now so my thoughts aren't making sense.
One thing I'd love your thoughts on (and would like to ask Peasant about later too)... the Seph we fight after defeating the giant Whisper, that Seph to me is the "failed timeline" as it were from original FF.
1: Sephiroth's goal was to summon Meteor, create a wound strong enough to make the planet use ALL of the Lifestream (now tainted with a form of the stigma/reunion of Jenova), be at the center and absorb ALL of it, thus becoming a god.
2: we see him do exactly this before the final fight!
3: Later on in the fight he uses, dissolves into Whispers...
4: The Sephiroth CLOUD fights (not the team or us) at the edge of creation has NO whispers, uses no powers, just toys the boy.
Was what we fought after Harbinger the Whispers showing us one last time "you guys are somehow going about this wrong, and this is what you'll end up with?" Or is Seph controlling them? Seems like a lot of people are taking the "Possibly Good? Sephiroth" theories as Sephiroth literally becoming a good person but I think it's much more likely that this "Possibly Good? Sephiroth" is just a Sephiroth that wants to destroy Jenova more than the Planet. Maybe he learned the whole truth of his origin and is pissed about being used for years or maybe he's from a future where he won and Jenova threw him away to die with the rest of humanity or something similar. What I'm trying to say is I could easily see a Sephiroth that hates Jenova more than the Planet Sephiroth would need years of psychological therapy to even vaguely resemble a person one would call good and somehow I doubt that's something he'd be willing to do but maybe we have a Sephiroth that isn't good but not actively a villain. With that being said I agree with everyone else that Hojo, creepy old perv that he is, is talking about breeding Aerith and Sephiroth. That being said your question of what Vincent's role in Sephiroth's origin might be; it was mentioned that originally Vincent was supposed to be a much more important character to the story but almost everything but the bare minimum about Vincent was cut due to time restraints and I'm not sure how much of that was explored in Dirge of Cerberus so it will be interesting to see how his character is expanded in future remake parts.

Jenova is a parasite of a sort, as is Sephiroth, and a parasite requires a host to live. The canonical ending of the original FF7 is that hundreds of years in the future Midgar is in ivy-covered ruins and humanity is nowhere to be seen; if Sephiroth is a parasite on humanity, then that's a terrible ending for even a Jenova-aligned Sephiroth. But it's also not unreasonable for Sephiroth to hope he can enlist Cloud to prevent that ending.

Sanzu River definitely! But does humanity actually end? I know kitase or someone said that in an interview but it was very jokingly and vague. So I don’t know if that’s enough “evidence” for me but maybe. Also, in the remake when the party sees the glimpse of red running, notice you don’t see the pups. Assuming they only saw as much as we did, how would red know this is a bad ending? Especially if he didn’t see his pups. I would think having pups would be good for him at least, seeing as he seems to be the only one of his species.

I think it's worth pointing out that we know how the original timeline ends 500 years in the future. Midgar is no longer a place where humans live; Nanaki's race seems fine, but humanity is presumed extinct. It's not exactly a good ending.
So my theory is that the ultimate result of the original timeline was some form of Bad Ending, one wherein the human race is wiped out by some cataclysm or another as a result of the events of the original FF7. (This human extinction is basically what the AVALANCHE extremists wanted in the prequel _Before Crisis.)_ I also suspect that some form of Sephiroth persisted in the Lifestream to witness this cataclysm and realized how his actions came to bring it to be.
As such, I don't necessarily see Unknown Sephiroth as fully reformed or good, but instead more like an immortal time traveler with the benefit of 500 years of hindsight. He wants humanity to be spared extinction because it somehow leads to his demise centuries in the future, and he believes he can unite with Cloud & Co towards the mutual goal of preventing that future - and with the understanding that he wasn't exactly trustworthy. He doesn't dare tamper with the timeline prior to his union with the Lifestream at Nibelheim, so he cannot undo the Nibelheim fire. But everything after that point - to include the death of Zach - is fair game for Unknown Sephiroth's temporal manipulation. Thus Unknown Sephiroth can't stop the Nibelheim fire, but still he wants the Party's help.
The truly terrifying thing is that whatever does cause the Calamity of the Distant Future is so powerful that even a Sephiroth from the future can't hope to defeat it himself. There is an enemy of incredible scope yet hiding in the shadows of Gaia.

I think Jenova, as she should have been all along with her true power unleashed, is this threat that Sephiroth cannot fight by himself. He asks Cloud not for his physical strength, but mental. No one besides Cloud who has been infected with Jenova cells has managed to overcome her corruptive influence. Sephiroth obviously stands no chance in that department, seeing how he was literally injected with Jenova cells while he was still a fetus. Jenova's vile presence is in his very DNA which he might have come to detest.

Now that you've mentioned it, has a Sephiroth Clone actually turned into a Jenova monster (or whatever it's called ) in the original? As far as I've remembered (as I've only watched the original playthroughs), the Sephiroth the group was chasing (in the original) was Jenova's headless body changing its appearance; and that each time it leaves, it left a piece of itself that changes into a Jenova-type monster. Also, the fact of Jenova's headless corpse was traveling by itself to the Northern Crater. I don't think there was any indication of Sephiroth Clones doing that in the original game, as they only traveled to the Northern Crater and other things. In the remake, not only has a Sephiroth Clone changed into a Jenova monster, but also the fact that a Sephiroth Clone was carrying Jenova's body (to possibly the Northern Crater). Isn't that the indication that Jenova didn't used any of its body parts to create that Jenova monster in the remake? That Jenova's body hasn't changed (everything the same) one bit once it left that capsule? What's the possibility that (unlike the original) Jenova's original body is still kept intact and is carried all the way to the Northern Crater? Doesn't that also mean the possibility of other Sephiroth Clones also turning into Jenova-type monsters?

The true ending results in the planet winning and everything else losing. The bad ending would be Jenova winning, resulting in all life ceasing and the planet crumbling into nothingness. The ending that needs to conclude is where the planet and all life continues to thrive along with the planet. To get there, it may be necessary to explore Sephiroth having a redemption arc, which dissolves the old story telling tropes of light vs dark, and replaced with more modern story telling where villains aren't evil, just the product of misfortune manifested into tangible malice, and nobody is beyond saving. Some of the best villains are characterized by the ones you most sympathize/connect with. This Sephiroth may be the only person who has the power to purge Jenova from the planet, its possible he might return to heroism at the last moment. If this is the ultimate play, i'd personally love to see it but prefer it told in a separate sequel game to this rendition of FF7R as to not muddy up this game too much, but its fine if they want to use FF7R as the medium to set up that arc.

Sephiroth needs humanity somehow, and is going back in time to prevent human extinction. For whatever reason, he is not strong enough to prevent such a cataclysm himself, and requires the assistance of Cloud & Co.
If so, it would make sense that Sephiroth would not dare meddle with the timeline prior to his union with the Lifestream at Nibelheim; this would be the event that grants him virtual immortality, so he'd run the risk of wiping his future self out of existence if he went back in time before that. Anything after that point (such as preventing Zack's death) would be fair game, but critically he can't risk undoing the Nibelheim Fire. This puts him in an awkward position asking for Cloud's help.

I mean if he would redeem himself in the remake while Aerith and now Zack is and still alive I wonder if both Zack and Aerith would sacrifce themselves in the later part because their fate is inevitable and it is necessary for the planet's survival and then Sephiroth would sacrifice himself too dealing with his old evil self thus improving his character and story arc making it a semi full circle about him first known as a great soldier with many who idolizes him and later becoming the great evil then redeeming himself for his evil doing fulfilling his assumed role as the great soldier who will save the planet while retaining the beloved arc of Aerith and Zack sacrifices for the greater good because honestly i was kinda bummed out knowing that Zack is still kinda "alive" in the remake that robbed him from his original story arc that made him one of the best character in the FF franchise.

@@alicev.3867, as I pointed out earlier, Future Sephiroth may be wary of events that would create temporal paradoxes. He can't go back in time to destroy himself, or alter himself too much, and still be around to go back in time - well, I guess to some extent this depends on how the story writers plan on dealing with time travel.
It's possible that Future Sephiroth can't risk revealing himself to Current Sephiroth *at all.* After all, Sephiroth's track record of responding calmly to revelations about the nature of himself is... well, we know what happened to Nibelheim. Current Sephiroth becoming aware of Future Sephiroth may ruin Future Sephiroth's entire plan... which would explain a lot of Future Sephiroth's cryptic interactions with the Party thus far. He's worried that he can't trust them yet to keep all of that information from Current Sephiroth.
As such, I strongly suspect that the story for Part 2 will have Future Sephiroth interfering with events in much the same way that the Whispers interfered with events of Part 1. The difference would be that while the Whispers wanted to keep the original story on track, I believe Future Sephiroth will try to steer Aerith away from the Ancient City. @@blumiu2426 Oh boy, I may have ruffled some feathers here. Let me respond in detail so you know where I'm coming from with this.
Firstly, I never said anything about successful or unsuccessful and I don't need to name an unsuccessful anime or anything of the sort (I'm not even interested in manga or anime, so your example concerting Ghost in the Shell Arise doesn't tell me much - though, I'm just gonna take your claim, that it sucked on face value, because it does not matter for my argument here).
Yes, there are lots of remakes out there, which are pretty one to one adaptations and also successful. And yes there are adaptations, which drift to far away from the source material (in the opinion of some people of cause) and are therefore not successful - not only in Japan. But we are talking about FF7R and concerning the success of that game so far... well, one can't argue that part 1 wasn't damn successful - breaking records even.
Now you may claim that part 2 will crash and burn in Japan, because you just can't see an adaptation that changes so much as FF7 Remake did being successful in Japan, but let's wait for part 2 first before making that observation, shall we? :)
In addition, you just witnessed a team of japanese developers and artists - largely the same team, that brought us the original FF7 in the days of old - just doing that, which apparently won't be successful in Japan by your definition. So by that logic, you are claiming, that Nomura, Kitase, Nojima and the gang just disrespected their own artwork and their own intellectual property, because the changes they have made are to far away from your personal tastes and opinions or from what you claim the personal tastes and opinions of japanese people are (side note: not all japanese people feel the same way, ok?).... right... How about we let the artist decide what is respectful and disrespectful to their own work? ;)
Concerning your example with manga/anime adaptations: I'm not sure this is a fitting comparison for FF7 and FF7R. You can have the exact same story in a manga and an anime and people will pick up the type of media they prefer. Some prefer to read, some to watch movies. Remaking the exact same story in a new type of media, does not make the other piece of media obsolete the same way it would, would it be on the same type of media. Case in point: in the case of FF7, both the original game and the remake are available on the SAME platform, the same type of media - the PS4 of cause. So you have many people now who have a decision to make: "Which one shall I play?". Many would argue, that there would be no need whatsoever to play a 23 year old game with dated graphics when they can play the same game with better graphics and gameplay systems, which are in line with the times. I mean why would anyone new to the series wanna play the original Resident Evil 2 now that we have that awesome remake? Most people will always pick up the newer version of the story.
      BUT...
If they fall in love with the characters in FF7R and then they learn, that the remake is actually more of a sequel instead of a remake, then they may overcome their distaste of old polygon graphics and play the original anyways. And guess what? That's exactly what we see now. So many people, who have never picked up a JRPG are now playing the OG FF7 because of remake. And when they come back to Hard Mode in part 1 or start part 2 in the future they'll be in the same boat as we veterans and can enjoy the theory crafting going on right now. I think that is exactly, what the developers intended with Remake and not disrespecting the source material.
Lastly, let's say you're right about japanese people liking adding things to stories and not rewriting them like you said. Ok, But guess what: That's exactly what Square has done here. They preserved so many moments and feelings from the original while ADDING a unique spin, that may very well blow the doors wide open of what a REMAKE can be. The complain of "rewriting things" is often used, when creators basically erase the original in order to promote their own new vision of things. The 2016 Ghostbusters movie comes to mind, where they used the world and setting but didn't even acknowledge the characters or the story of the original. Now that would be a stellar example of how not to do it, considering the box office results. But can you really argue, that FF7 Remake is on that level? I think not. Yes, they changed some things, but they didn't erase them or even replace them how typical remakes would have done it. By making basically a sequel, that feels like a remake they showed the utmost respect for the original in my opinion.
Now, your opinion my differ and you don't think of it as respectful. You may even hate the Remake for changing too much. That's fine by me. I don't care. I just uttered my take on the matter on how I feel about the Remake and your argument which involves speaking for an entire group of people while ignoring the glaring irony of having a part of those people doing exactly what you claim that group of people shouldn't like, isn't gonna change my mind.
Again, just to hammer it home: I just wanted to clarify, why I don't think your argument is solid enough to be a good argument. I have no problem with your personal taste concerning FF7R. Heck, you are obviously passionate about a certain 23 year old game which I also love to death. And you are interested enough in the new one, that you clicked on one of Pez' batshit crazy theory videos - which is nice.
But really lastly now, just because I wanna poke a bit of fun at your request: The 2018 Secret of Mana Remake wasn't very good and it wasn't very successful. Both sales and review scores weren't really that high. Maybe because it was too similar to the original, didn't take advantage of the new technical possibilities, didn't take risks and just was basically the same thing as the original but with a graphical style, that just didn't translate very well into 3D. So there you have it - I named one. :D

Well, with the original game's ending being presented as a bad outcome, just think of Sephiroth's presence in that ending, and what desires he would develop under such circumstances. People keep saying it looks like they're trying to go "Kingdom Hearts" on us, but I actually think they're trying to go "Dissidia" on us. If you consider how Dissidia is a follow-up to Final Fantasy 1, then maybe FF7R could be seen as a Dissidia-like follow-up to FF7. I would even suggest that the "Unknown" Sephiroth you actually fight face to face is the one who has been through Dissidia, and is taking that experience back to his home world to make a difference.

I think Sephiroth knows more about the planet then Aerith, now that I replayed both, that red 13 sees the original ending of ff7 ps1 and said a ending if we fail here today stating that humanity ends I assume. Before you go into the portal in last chapter Sephiroth says “ all born are bound to her, should this world be unmade so to her children” to me it sounds like this time he is talking about that planet not Jenova. Then looks at Aerith and says “those who look through clouded eyes only see shadows” so could he be talking about that what she hears from the planet are lies to do its bidding. And the whispers are lost souls of the planet the life force take make life stream feeding the planet?
Sephiroth never wanted to destroy the planet just wound it so he could take over the life stream and the planet from what was said in the temple of ancients. So what if it wasn’t sephiroth who summoned meteor but the planet to wipe out all the humans to start over and make new ones to feed the planet again because they became to powerful and sephiroth is trying to stop the planet and needs clouds help? It gives me legacy of Kain series vibes that the true villain isn’t who is presented to you. Makes me feel like the planet is the real villain this time around.
I dont know they way things are being put into place I would not be surprised if the planet was the true villian making sure Sephiroth failed every time but if cloud and Sephiroth unite the planet cannot stand against their combined power. if not cloud is going to have to do some Uber training because end of creation Sephiroth clearly has Clouds combat style down to a T and the party will not stand a chance further down the line.
I want to see Sephiroth fully Restore jenova to fully healed and see what she can do.

Sephiroth is the classic example of a fallen Hero. Personally I think Jenova corrupted his mind and erased any trace of humanity. There's also alot of rage that's built up.
His motives are a mixture of paranoia and misinformation. He doesn't want the planet to end, and he feels the only way to do this is merge with the planet and livestream and take complete control over the planet. He needs to damage the planet enough to attempt this and Meteor is to be used for this purpose. But all traces of goodness that might of existed in Sephiroth is long gone. He believes 100% in his cause and won't be swayed by anything or anyone. It is what it is.
Actually since his status after Crisis Core is unknown but he's still alive just sealed in a cave. Is Genesis (Rhapsodos) I wonder if he's going to play a role in this remake? It would make sense since he was created essentially the same way as Sephiroth and they were good friends. Plus Genesis is pretty close to Sephiroth in power and his degradation was cured by the lifestream in Crisis Core. I don't know just a thought. This also might have something to do with Zach still being alive. Zach and Genesis did part ways on good terms with Genesis sealing himself away untill he was needed to protect the planet. Well what better time would it be to reverse the roles of Sephiroth and Genesis, with Sephiroth being the antagonist and Geneis being a potential good guy. Goddamn you Square Enix now you really opened a freaking can of worms leaving everything so wide open now.
Plus Hojo is as oblivious as he is insane, I guess he didn't get the memo, but Sephiroth really didn't like Hojo even when he was still a good guy. Though Hojo does consider Sephiroth his greatest creation.
In conclusion I like your theory of Jenova infecting Sephiroth, it's quite possible. I wonder if there was a way to neutralize her ability to infect others or in those already infected?

It was one of the best set pieces of the entire game as there is so much meaning and foreshadowing and that FIGHT! Remaking the camera angles from the original game but this time Sephiroth blocking Omnislash as he KNEW where to block and it wasn't because Cloud was weak either. Cloud was on Goku levels with his speed and offensive attacks and Sephiroth's fighting form in blocking it with complete confidence was masterful. Breathtaking. Then the 7 seconds until the end will leave us all wondering for a while. It was perfect (just like how Aeriths scene in the OG FF7 was perfect to hit us in the gut in such a powerful way).

If i remember correctly, Sephiroth used his sword to cut jenova's head before trusting it to cloud and thus Hojo became interested with cloud not because he delivered the final blow to sephiroth but his reaction to jenova cells, which of course made him the first clone afterwards. No other clones are like cloud. I guess my question is, what's so special about him?
