It kinda bothers me when people say Cloud is "pretending" to be Zack, as that implies he's doing it willingly. But not only that, Cloud doesn't copy or even emulate Zack's personality during the first half of FFVII. His personality is basically a composite of how he viewed himself if he had joined Soldier, with his memories of events mixed up due to the mako poisoning and manipulation by Sephiroth/Jenova. Another thing people usually forget about Cloud is that even though he's 21 in FFVII, he was basically in a tube for 5 years so he's really mentally 16. His whole personality is a 16 year old's idea if what a cool Ex-SOLDIER is.
Not exactly, it’s not like his brain isn’t developed for his age because he IS 21 yo. But his life experiences are that of a 17yo instead of a 21 yo. So his social skills as an adult are not as developed as they would normally be if he didn’t lose those years and suffered as much trauma and psychological stress as he did.
He's pretending to be Zack in that he's pretending to be SOLDIER first class and Zack was SOLDIER first class. People aren't trying to make some deep comment on Cloud's personality, people are just saying he's pretending to be something he's not
What always got to me: Angeal: I don't use the Buster Sword unless I can help it. Use brings about rust, wear and tear. Zack: Yeah I use the sword, but only smack them with the blunt backside to knock them out. Using the sharp end will chip the edge and blood will slowly allow rust to set in. Cloud: Zack, I left the Buster Sword on the edge of a cliff overlooking Midgar as a memorial to you. *Zack and Angeal in a rage due to the Buster Sword just being abandoned on a desert cliff, completely rusted and broken.*
If it's any consolation, he does move it to the church at the end of the movie...a church that floods thanks to Aerith using her limit break in the afterlife and has holes in the roof...but now it sort of has some protection 😅. Still too little, too late by that point, though.
Even though their scenes are brief, I really love how soft Zack is with Cloud. Zack clearly sees that Cloud is just a very overwhelmed teenager and Zack’s support is one of the few moments of softness Cloud really gets in the series
That transition to Aerith's Theme at the end was not fair. Warn a man before unleashing that heartbreaking melody! Jokes and emotional dam breakages aside, this was another great video! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Took me 2 hours tops by killing in 9-6-5 with attacks from stance and 255 str aerial drains from stance. Probably would have been even faster with assault twister+. It's really not hard to do at all.
I’m pretty sure everyone knows this already but a niche detail that you should know is that hair, clothing and personality aren’t the only thing different from Zack and Cloud, the way they carry their sword as well. If you pay close attention, Zack wears it with the silver edge facing inward and cloud wears it facing outward
I honestly love these more in depth Completionist episodes so much more than what we've had for a while. Not that what we've gotten has been bad at all, but I was one of the people that really missed the Spoiler Alert segments from the earlier episodes in the series. Keep up the great work, Jirard!

Just hearing about what it takes to complete the game is, ironically enough, not a complete experience for me when it comes to his videos. The current format gives me exactly what I want.
One thing I always love so much about CC is that the story always felt for me like it was cut short, a fact that only amplifies the feeling of unfairness and grief for Zack's death. Because his life really was cut short
The day i came home with my PS5 copy I felt a need to pull out my old PSP along side my original Crisis Core copy. I thought to myself, "About to replay the journey again...gotta thank Zack one more time for him becoming not only my favorite FF character but one of my general favorites in fictional ones of all time. " This time, unlike when I played this on PSP in highschool, I cried despite knowing how FF7 Remake is teasing a different reality.
I absolutely love watching these videos and it’s about time as last week I’ve just finished final fantasy VII crisis core reunion and it’s such an emotional game. This is definitely a moving story to the legacy of my favourite final fantasy game.

Zack for the longest time was my favorite final fantasy character. Still might be. I think he's a rare case of that honorable good guy without any major flaws that somehow still resonate. Nowadays those types of heros struggle to be interesting with audiences, example Superman, but Zack I think with his leading through example and actually having to pay the consequences of living that honest life is what makes him so resonant. The dialogue in this game is not very good. All the genesis and clones bs also not very good imo. Zack though makes it all worth it. What a hero.
Im so happy people can experience this game now. My friends and i were OBSESSED with the Sephiroth vs Angeal and Genesis scene. 15 years later i still know it word for word!
Love the thoughtfulness you and the team put into this. This was my first time getting to enjoy the game, and the missions are addictive! And I love the little side stories in them, like meeting Don Corneo’s niece, the hapless SOLDIER 3rd class, and Yuffie! The little surprises outside of the main story make the game so good for me.
Zack’s message and what he stands for, followed me for years since I was a kid. And this game meant so much to me, playing the remake was the most nostalgia inducing experience. The end STILL had me bawling, Zack is such a good person and amazing character. I hope rebirth does him justice like Crisis Core did.

You aren't the only one! I thought after Zack died, we'd cut to him waking up in the church him thinking that was a bad dream showing that this zack survived. It didn't help that interviews with developers made it seem like they were tying things together with remake/rebirth but not really only astetic wise not story. It really is just a better version of crisis, no reveals to rebirth so we just have to wait.
@@Dark_Jaguar I feel like they intentionally did this to confuse new players who only played Remake and wanted answers as to who Zack is... like; "Oh, here's that fight where he kills all of those Shinra Troopers and we actually get to play it? Cool." and then by the end it's like "Wait... wait no, he lived this, didn't he? What's going on?" The directors are intentionally trying to troll the new players and I'm all for it.

As someone who came away from this experience overall negatively, it was good to see you call out some of the issues I took a little more harshly. And as always, I'm glad I watched your video to get some perspective that I might have been missing. I'll probably never have the reverence for Zack that so many have, but I do appreciate that he was something more than a 5 minute scene from the original game.

I may be wrong but when cloud stabs Sepihroth smoke comes out of the wound just like when Barrett got stabbed in ff7 remake, like the whisperers were protecting Sepihroth from dying just like they did with Barrett. cloud also get protected when he's stabbed ,you can see the smoke coming from his wound, how else would he be able to lift Sepihroth on the wrong side of a katana lol
This is one of the few games where completing it 100% feels casual to me. It was one of the few games I had on the PSP for the longest time, so I would do run after run after run on it. Still f***** hate half the recast. Not the VAs. Just the voice work. Oh god, when it hits during the banora mission.
Love these FF7 universe games on modern consoles! Never got to play the og's but main characters i know..from another square enix franchise kingdom hearts. Naturally i HAD to buy the remake when it was released to learn backstory of cloud, sephiroth, tifa and aerith..didnt really understand the fuss about the final cutscene where zack was show alive. Now i definitely do! Crisis core reunion was a day 1 purchase for me..and man the story after chapter 6 had me glued on my sofa untill i beat the game 😅 Cant wait for 2023 and remake pt2. Only marginally related, but I didn't know that Before Crisis will get a sort-of remake. That's really nice, I've always been interested in that game's story and characters.
Cloud doesn’t act like Zack. He is far from it. Zack is outwardly caring, a dork, and essentric, confident, Cloud is “cool”, reserved, quiet, to cool for school, arrogant. Cloud shares some personality mannerisms but Cloud acts like how he thought he would act as a Soldier not how Zack acts.
Currently struggling with Minerva lol Also don’t forget that you can skip battle encounters by hugging walls, good for quickly clearing easy missions and getting items from those missions

i got the game an switch simply for the handheld nostalgia and let me tell you, 12 yo me has absolutely fucking ASCENDED i love Zack the puppy so much. I got the PSP solely for Crisis Core, only to then forget it in a rented car a week later and never see it again. Broke my heart back then, so im absolutely excstatic about the remake
I know i'm late to the party here. But i got this for switch at launch and recently for ps5. Wanted to try to platinum in 1 run before realizing how many hidden mail senders and complements there are. Though this playthrough i was able to max all stats and beat minerva in chapter 5 with only about 1hr of grinding sp master so i can upgrade materia. The summon booster materia you get in the later 9-missions make it easy to get most stats maxed if fusing with the materia you want
I watched the video after finally fully completing Crisis Core Reunion for the first time. MAN do I regret not finding out about the gil toss trick for the Minerva Hard mode fight. I costly punched that lady for what felt like forever.
dude i love these Deeper Dives into the game, the destination is also part of the journey & I'm glad you covere it... shame they didn't use this opportunity to actually add the Loveless play as a Complition bonus , i feel that might have been a nice addition since Genesis doesn't shut up about it well, i mean... the FF7 game that came out in 2020 is TITLED Remake, but is actually a sequel so is more like "FF7 chapter 5: Remake"
Oof, another reference to Cloud as a pretender. It's pretty clear that he BELIEVES his memories to be his own. Jirard did mention that his memories melded with Zack's, but I detect a bias, mirroring my own for Cloud. We love these characters, don't we?

honestly going in i knew there would be no story changes at all in this remaster, but i can't say i wasn't expecting a scene of Remake Zack in the church and giving us more of a tease of the timeline he is in. which i personally think his timeline is going to basically be how the dev's explain that just because the arbiters of Fate are gone doesn't mean actions do not have consequences. Aerith may very well be dead in that timeline, who knows until Rebirth and part 3 honestly. i was 2 years old when FF 7 released originally. so being around for Remake and experiencing the pure hype of FF7, my personal fav of the series. feels good
Before I watch this video I just want to say what Crisis Core meant to me. It was my first ever Final Fantasy and I rocked that shit on the PSP (fuck yeah). I played that game so much and when I beat the game I cried because of Zack’s story. I can’t wait to watch this retelling
I’m happy for everyone that enjoys Crisis Core Reunion. I played FF7 Remake, but haven’t played the original (yet). Actually, this past year in 2022, I played through Final Fantasy IV, VI, and V (in that order). I liked VI the most, and though I thought the Job System of V was cool, I still liked IV more. I’ve played these kind of as a way to catch up on games I wish I had played when I was younger. The next game I’m going to play will be Chrono Trigger. Some point after that, I plan to return to Final Fantasy by playing the original VII. I already know the story, including its plot twists, but part of me thinks I should go back and get the whole experience.
A little detail you forgot to mention that I noticed: The enemies turn away from you more in this version than the psp version. So you can get crits easier.
I missed the item pick up in the beginning that you need to come back and finish after the missile minigame!all but 1 achievement! going around to get it. I am having a blast playing it, not upset for a round two.
Got the Platinum and unfortunately bested the Superboss on hard before the video came out. After I spent 17 hours attempting it using costly punch, drain jump,and maxed stats (except magic). Afterwards, I proceeded to do the rest of the missable trophies, simply to make good use of Genji [armor] & the Heike soul + Divine 😏.
I gotta admit, I’m gonna wait a while before I watch the video, since I just bought the game and want to experience everything myself. But I’ll be back om the other side. Happy Holidays, Jirard and everyone else on the Completionist team :)

You should have used Assault Twister + in buster sword stance. You knock off anywhere from 150K-200k. Paired with smart consumer maxed out you full heal 99999 with a single potion. And full heal your ap with a single soma.
A great way to expand and remaster that’s still at its “Core” a portable game. This is how all remasters should be. Most time we get copy paste with better textures.
Genesis reciting the loveless poem is far from gobbledygook. It’s an ancient prophecy written in worship of menerva and predicting the events of Crisis core. Genesis saw the truth of this and determined he would see this prophecy through. It’s… really pretty simple
ACTIVATING REVIEW MODE! REVIEW RESOLVED! I've been thinking Crisis Core Reunion was made BEFORE Remake was ever a thought, that would explain the voice direction(sometimes lack thereof) being very rough for the Remake Cast of Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth and even Zack. We would see fantastic performances of these characters with Zack's VA starting to find his footing in his voice and than would be confidant in Intergrade. Obviously I can't proof my game theory but it feels like the most sense. Jirard also forgot to mention Zack can now run in Reunion and Zack has a new stance in the game once he has The Buster Sword, a stance that feels like the one Cloud has in Remake Part 1.

My brother spent all his birthday money on a PSP and this game, but didn't have any money for a memory card! So everytime he died he didn't have the ability to "restart from last save", cause there never were any saves. It took him forever to finish this game, without a memory card, and zero deaths. He could've bought a card, but I think he liked the challenge haha.

It’s not a little detail but a lot of people seem to miss it. Zack wears it like Angela, Cloud wears it for easy drawing and sheathing.
Not just that, Zack uses the blunt edge most of the time to cut down maintenance

I prefer it that way. It means we can use this as either a tie in to the original story or to the new story. Our interpretation is left to us.

This is one of the few games where completing it 100% feels casual to me. It was one of the few games I had on the PSP for the longest time, so I would do run after run after run on it.
Still f***** hate half the recast. Not the VAs. Just the voice work. Oh god, when it hits during the banora mission.
I’m glad they made an alternate universe for Zack’s story in the remake of 7.
Love these FF7 universe games on modern consoles! Never got to play the og's but main characters i know..from another square enix franchise kingdom hearts.
Naturally i HAD to buy the remake when it was released to learn backstory of cloud, sephiroth, tifa and aerith..didnt really understand the fuss about the final cutscene where zack was show alive. Now i definitely do!
Crisis core reunion was a day 1 purchase for me..and man the story after chapter 6 had me glued on my sofa untill i beat the game 😅

Only marginally related, but I didn't know that Before Crisis will get a sort-of remake. That's really nice, I've always been interested in that game's story and characters.
Cloud doesn’t act like Zack. He is far from it. Zack is outwardly caring, a dork, and essentric, confident, Cloud is “cool”, reserved, quiet, to cool for school, arrogant.
Cloud shares some personality mannerisms but Cloud acts like how he thought he would act as a Soldier not how Zack acts.
Currently struggling with Minerva lol
Also don’t forget that you can skip battle encounters by hugging walls, good for quickly clearing easy missions and getting items from those missions

i got the game an switch simply for the handheld nostalgia and let me tell you, 12 yo me has absolutely fucking ASCENDED i love Zack the puppy so much. I got the PSP solely for Crisis Core, only to then forget it in a rented car a week later and never see it again. Broke my heart back then, so im absolutely excstatic about the remake

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how every retelling of Zack Fair’s final stand gets progressively more absurd?
I know i'm late to the party here. But i got this for switch at launch and recently for ps5. Wanted to try to platinum in 1 run before realizing how many hidden mail senders and complements there are. Though this playthrough i was able to max all stats and beat minerva in chapter 5 with only about 1hr of grinding sp master so i can upgrade materia. The summon booster materia you get in the later 9-missions make it easy to get most stats maxed if fusing with the materia you want
I watched the video after finally fully completing Crisis Core Reunion for the first time. MAN do I regret not finding out about the gil toss trick for the Minerva Hard mode fight. I costly punched that lady for what felt like forever.
dude i love these Deeper Dives into the game, the destination is also part of the journey & I'm glad you covere it... shame they didn't use this opportunity to actually add the Loveless play as a Complition bonus , i feel that might have been a nice addition since Genesis doesn't shut up about it
well, i mean... the FF7 game that came out in 2020 is TITLED Remake, but is actually a sequel so is more like "FF7 chapter 5: Remake"

honestly going in i knew there would be no story changes at all in this remaster, but i can't say i wasn't expecting a scene of Remake Zack in the church and giving us more of a tease of the timeline he is in. which i personally think his timeline is going to basically be how the dev's explain that just because the arbiters of Fate are gone doesn't mean actions do not have consequences. Aerith may very well be dead in that timeline, who knows until Rebirth and part 3 honestly. i was 2 years old when FF 7 released originally. so being around for Remake and experiencing the pure hype of FF7, my personal fav of the series. feels good

Before I watch this video I just want to say what Crisis Core meant to me. It was my first ever Final Fantasy and I rocked that shit on the PSP (fuck yeah). I played that game so much and when I beat the game I cried because of Zack’s story. I can’t wait to watch this retelling

I’m happy for everyone that enjoys Crisis Core Reunion. I played FF7 Remake, but haven’t played the original (yet).
Actually, this past year in 2022, I played through Final Fantasy IV, VI, and V (in that order). I liked VI the most, and though I thought the Job System of V was cool, I still liked IV more.
I’ve played these kind of as a way to catch up on games I wish I had played when I was younger. The next game I’m going to play will be Chrono Trigger. Some point after that, I plan to return to Final Fantasy by playing the original VII. I already know the story, including its plot twists, but part of me thinks I should go back and get the whole experience.
You're gonna enjoy Crono Trigger. Its biggest problem is that it's too short, which is not the worst problem a game can have.
A little detail you forgot to mention that I noticed: The enemies turn away from you more in this version than the psp version. So you can get crits easier.
But like...why? The game was already super easy, why would they make it easier by having you essentially deal more damage?
I missed the item pick up in the beginning that you need to come back and finish after the missile minigame!all but 1 achievement! going around to get it. I am having a blast playing it, not upset for a round two.
Got the Platinum and unfortunately bested the Superboss on hard before the video came out. After I spent 17 hours attempting it using costly punch, drain jump,and maxed stats (except magic). Afterwards, I proceeded to do the rest of the missable trophies, simply to make good use of Genji [armor] & the Heike soul + Divine 😏.
I gotta admit, I’m gonna wait a while before I watch the video, since I just bought the game and want to experience everything myself. But I’ll be back om the other side.

You should have used Assault Twister + in buster sword stance. You knock off anywhere from 150K-200k. Paired with smart consumer maxed out you full heal 99999 with a single potion. And full heal your ap with a single soma.
Honestly you can bypass the need for those items with the Genji Helm and Aerial Drain

The dust on the slots of the sword just shows how long you've been at this.
The original Crisis Core's engine was later used for Type 0 and I'm here hoping we'll get an actual remake of another PSP masterpiece.
A great way to expand and remaster that’s still at its “Core” a portable game. This is how all remasters should be. Most time we get copy paste with better textures.
Completing it wasn't so much a nightmare as it was a time sink. Especially gathering SP for stat maxing and getting all the DMW memory images
I srill love this game that I atill have my copy of the psp version and come back to it every now and again because the story is so good.

Genesis reciting the loveless poem is far from gobbledygook. It’s an ancient prophecy written in worship of menerva and predicting the events of Crisis core. Genesis saw the truth of this and determined he would see this prophecy through. It’s… really pretty simple

I've been thinking Crisis Core Reunion was made BEFORE Remake was ever a thought, that would explain the voice direction(sometimes lack thereof) being very rough for the Remake Cast of Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth and even Zack. We would see fantastic performances of these characters with Zack's VA starting to find his footing in his voice and than would be confidant in Intergrade. Obviously I can't proof my game theory but it feels like the most sense. Jirard also forgot to mention Zack can now run in Reunion and Zack has a new stance in the game once he has The Buster Sword, a stance that feels like the one Cloud has in Remake Part 1.
I think the reunion had less money, and a less caring voice director. Some differences are really sad to here.
I'm kinda glad this remake isn't connected to the FF7 remake. I don't wanna have to play a bunch of spin offs to fully understand the FF7R story... 😅
I'm still struggling to determine whether I like or not that they're changing the story at all.

My brother spent all his birthday money on a PSP and this game, but didn't have any money for a memory card! So everytime he died he didn't have the ability to "restart from last save", cause there never were any saves.
It took him forever to finish this game, without a memory card, and zero deaths. He could've bought a card, but I think he liked the challenge haha.
