      You didn’t really mention anything about when a nerve is impinged because of a potential herniation. Anytime I’m sitting and I get up I also have muscle spasms in my butt and the pain stops me in my tracks and I can’t move till it stops. Are we to assume that once the disk heals itself all that will go away?

      @@SarahMae-jd6xi hey! As you can imagine- covering every possible scenario would take days of video…
      If you’re feeling a spasm when you stand up and it stops you in your tracks- this doesn’t necessarily mean a nerve is pinched or the cause of pain. Any structure in the spine (disc being just one) could cause this transitional pain.
      In isolation, this doesn’t tell me much.
      Are you open to some help- I’d be happy to review your case and help you out the pieces together if you’d like?
      Let me know.
      Thanks!

      Totally understandable! I also have sciatica pain down my leg and my calf severely aches throughout the day. Ortho says piriformis syndrome but chiro and PT say they think it might be a herniated disk. Watched one of your other videos and you said if you sit and lift your good leg and you feel pain on your bad side then it’s most likely a herniated disk. So that’s what I’m leaning towards. I am def interested in connecting and getting help!

I can sit for hours without extending my legs forward , sitting in the chair creates mild pain in the glute , lying on the back feels completely okay , i am doing some exercises now to recover.

    5:38, I could see how getting an MRI can becoming sort of a "self-fulfilling prophecy", where someone's gonna give up on themselves and do nothing to get better, such as lose weight, strengthen their core, etc. But to be fair, some will get an MRI because the pain becomes unbearable so you wanna see what's going on. I think having a positive mindset can definitely make a difference. My MRI looks bad, I've been diagnosed with L1-L5 disc herniation with radiculopathy. I think a lot of it is genetic or how your spine develops during childhood and adolescence. I remember feeling back pain even in my early 20s, and my back "going out" a few times just after bending over and picking something off the floor. Over the years, I got into power lifting, I did squats and deadlifts and I've gotten in and out of shape, as in putting on and losing 50 LBS of fat. I'm sure that made things worse. These days, I do core strengthening exercises and go for 20 minute walks, I begin to feel sciatica after 20 minutes. I'm still hoping my pain will go away.

    I have a central disc protrusion at L5-S1. Been doing chiropractic and spinal decompression. Along with some pt too. It’s going on 4 months and still having a hard time sitting. 1st surgeon says they don’t wanna operate because it isn’t directly on a nerve root. Kinda scared cuz there is some improvement pain wise but I’m unable to work because I can’t stand for more than 3 hours and can’t sit for a hour.

      Hey Eric- sorry to hear man- thanks for watching and sharing your story. Doesn't sound like you're a surgical candidate at the moment. But common that sitting remains an issue without the right approach (you can actually learn to experience pain while sitting... we call this a learned response). I'd need some more details to see if I could help you...

    I can't get an MRI for 6 months, public healthcare where I live has long waiting lists sometimes unfortunately. I followed your guide and clearly I have some kind of disc herniation (l5 nerve from symptom pattern) like my doctor originally suspected. It's been 6 weeks now and pain and mobility are improving naturally. However the mild-ish weakness in my foot/leg is very slow to improve, and the numbness in my big toe/foot/ankle is unchanged (to be honest maybe a little bit worse). I don't know what to do to fix it, and I've been told to just wait for the MRI 😅

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! if numbness is unchanged and weakness is slow to come back... time will tell if it fully returns or not. If its going to take you 6 months to get MRI... sounds like surgery is not an option.
      No pressure, but let me know if you're open to help and would like some guidance here. Need to start exploring movements and strategies to give yourself the best chance of full recovery!

      @@drcharliejohnson I've been working on gradually increasing gentle movement and walking as much as I czn tolerate each day. I'm normally super flexible, borderline hypermobile, so have to be careful. I think I'm making good progress. It's just kinda frustrating sometimes, hoping there's no permanent damage that might have been prevented but at the same time avoiding surgery if I can is always the better option. Not knowing exactly what's wrong can be mentally tough too. Its great to watch videos like yours for encouragement and guidance, thankyou 😊

    Hi Dr, thank for restoring my faith back that i can heal. I went through your DIY guide and i figured i have all the symptoms you mentioned in disc herniation category you have in that video. Now i am wondering what can do about it to fasten my process. I have been facing this problem past 10 years on and off but this time its much worse than i have had before. I have been seeing Acu puncturist which helped to reduce pain and help me move. I would like to know how can i fix this considering i am house builder so i do heavy lifting bending forward backwards sideways all day. Any exercises diet supplement or anything else i can do to recover please suggest. Blessings

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! You can heal- but you’ll need a process to follow and (in my experience) it’s best if you’re willing to learn how to fix yourself vs rely on others. Many treatments (chiro, massage, acupuncture, surgery, etc) work short term- but because they don’t empower you to resolve your own pain (teach you what to do)- they flop/don’t work long term.
      Make sense?
      Truthfully, hard to recommend anything specific without knowing more about your case…

    14:44, 6 months gives me hope. Is it ok to do exercises during this time that do not cause pain? I like going for walks, riding my stationary bike, lifting weights but not heavy and nothing that loads the spine. I also find that doing bear-holds, cat-cow stretches, and half-cobras really feels great. I sleep with one of those elastic lifting belts on because I've found that I'd wake up with severe back pain just from twisting and turning over night.
