What a clear and concise video! I have replaced many heads years ago but needed a refresher how to do the adjustments. Thank you for the great tutorial.
Good video that is straightforward and shows how easy it is to replace a sprinkler head. Also important to know and not mentioned... The screw that shortens the water stream also holds the nozzle in place. It should always be screwed in at least enough to engage the nozzle even if you don't need to adjust the stream. Failing to do so may result in the water pressure blowing the nozzle out of the head. To shorten the stream, simply continue turning the set screw until it enters the top of the water stream.
Very similar to what I end up doing, except I use the RainBird 3500 as that matches the size of the old sprinklers that I am replacing. The hard work is really only the digging - the adjustment is just as easy as you describe in the video. The 5000 is larger diameter and has a 3/4" NPT fitting, so I can't just slide this into the old hole. Rainbird has a special screwdriver that you can use to pull the head up when the water is off - I use that and make the side-to-side adjustments, and only at the very end turn the water on so I can adjust the nozzle spray.
This is one of the best instructional video’s I’ve seen. ❤Well done HDA! 👏Thank you for this and I am now heading to my sprinkler’s that so need adjusting.
Well the adjustments went well for me. Easy peasy thanks to you HDAndy!👏 I will never call the guy that installed them again. He charged me every time and made it seem like it was such an inconvenience.
Very good overview and matches my experience. I have about 25 of these RB 42SA+ heads in my yard. You can find them at Lowe's and when bought 4 or more at a time there is a discount (something around $11 in my area currently). A couple of suggestions that work for me: 1) As one fails I take a new one out of my inventory, while the ground around the head is wet push it gently in every direction to break it's bond a bit with the dirt around. A large pair of channel lock pliers will then turn the entire head out as a unit without any digging (at least in m yard?). Carefully remove the old unit to keep damp dirt from falling into the hole. 2) Take your new head and turn it fully to the left and mark it (paint pen) then install it with the painted spot pointing to your left spray margin. These always come set to spray 180 degrees so if your on a yard edge no further adjustment (other than distance) is needed. Rain Bird makes a small screwdriver tool that has a blade extension on it that allows you to pull the heads up out of the body so you can fine tune them without the water running if you prefer. There is a socket for it on the top of the head - insert the tool turn it 90 degrees and pull up and the head comes up against the spring pressure - with a rubber glove you can hold it easily. Good video!!
Explanation starting at 7:50 telling how to adjust the fan spray is superb. Thanks. I thought I would have to call a professional landscaper just to do that for me, but you saved me!
Thank you so much for your support. I started making TH-cam videos because I wanted to help other people and it's comments like yours that keeps me going!
I purchased my home in September of 2021. The backyard was never landscaped but it did have an irrigation system. All the rain it’s 5000 are stuck. I have 6 sprinkler heads that I need to replace. You explained it very well on how to adjust them
Thank you! I watched 3 other videos INCLUDING RAINBIRD’s before yours trying to figure out how to adjusts the spray radius. And it was as simple as physically turning the head clockwise. Many thanks!
Great tips, great camera angles and video quality; however, your introductory music is twice the volume of your narrative - older viewers, like me, are looking for practical tips, not loud musical intros. It's a small point, but it almost kept from watching this excellent video.
Thanks for the feedback. I wanted the intro to be energetic, but not too loud that it makes people's ears bleed. Sounds like I need to make an adjustment. Thanks for your support.
Great explanations! I run across doing six adjustments and it still doesn't broadcast in the area I want. I'm guessing the head needs to be replaced at that time. I also have an Orbit that my small screw will not fall in the hole to do the adjustment. Ughh~ I must replace another head. It's only about $11.
good video. so there is two ways of adjusting left and right movement? with the plus and minus screw and physically twisting the rotor stem? when do you know when to use which? The initial set up was confusing to me. where should you nozzle sprayer be pointed initially? before making any adjustments. Anyway, you have smart hands.
Thank you! Can I shut off a sprinkler head by putting an end plug or any others into the riser or pipe if one of heads is broken and not necessary to water this section?
Turning off the main is not necessary. However, be aware that any residual pressure remaining in the zone could cause some water to collect in the bottom of your hole. It's not a big issue, but may be annoying.
If dirt falls in the piping before installing the new sprinkler, twist the new sprinkler anyway and when you turn the water on, make sure nothing is plugged. Typically, the water pressure pushes out any of the dirt that fell in, so it shouldn't be a problem.
... or have a helper activate the zone without the head in place. Be ready to stuff a rag into the opening so more dirt is not washed in. You may need to then wait until the flood dries up.
Unless the sprinkler is broken off the pipe that is totally unecessary. The top of that sprinkler head comes off, hence the ridges for gripping with pliers. Pull the guts out and screw the new ones in.
Uugghhh.... Why is the opening music so loud? Your opening music takes from the information. I'm just trying to get a tip on adjusting a sprinkler head, not go to Warped Tour. Good luck on whatever it is you are trying to do

This is the very best explanation of how to adjust the head. Thank you for posting these instructions.
You're welcome! Thanks for your support!
Finally I was able to set my sprinkler with instructions for a layperson. Thank you!
Yours is the best video on adjusting the rainbird. Thanks!
Boom! Thanks for your support!
Thanks! This helped me way more than the official Rain Bird video
Awesome. Would you like to see other sprinkler videos? Or just more random DIY stuff?

You got this! Is this a topic or video of something else you'd like me to make?

You can take the heads apart and clean them this will usually fix the stuck problem.
@@Djkyle65 thank you for your advice. I did end up just buying new ones but if I have issue in the future I will take them apart.

Excellent! All-in-one Rain Bird 42sa video! Good Job Man!!
Appreciate your support! Thanks!

Great Job!!!😀
Thanks for your support!
Thank you Handy Dandy Andy excellent!
You're welcome!
I didn't realize this style has such an easy left stop adjustment. The Ranbird 5000s break if you try to do that, and are way more frustrating!
Newer models seem to support that.
Janet the 5000 and 42SA are the same thing, if they’re breaking then it’s an older model, the older model doesn’t have slip clutch
Finally a video that make sense!
Thanks for your support!
Practice and useful. Tks
Great video Andy!!! I actually have an inlet on my rainbird 1800. What's the purpose of an inlet?
Great Video!
I love the name!

Good Video-Thanks.
Thanks for your support!
thank you. I wasn't sure if I needed to turn off my water main first but apparently not.
Correct, you only need to make sure your sprinkler zone is off to work on your sprinklers.
Turning off the main is not necessary. However, be aware that any residual pressure remaining in the zone could cause some water to collect in the bottom of your hole. It's not a big issue, but may be annoying.
Do you have two shut the water off to the sprinkler before attempting tominstall a new head? Thanks
You need to have the sprinklers turned off (not currently running), but you don't need to physically shut the main water valve off.
Thank you!!!
Why didn't you use another rain bird 5000? Is the other one a better head
Don't forget to leave room from sidewalk, for weed eater to edge.
Thanks, you saved me a lot of 'F' bombs
Did you have to shut the water off? Or only sprinkler shut off valve?
Only need to shut valve off.
@@diyhda Thanks!
What is easiest method do remove dirt if it falls in whole before new one is reinserted ?
If dirt falls in the piping before installing the new sprinkler, twist the new sprinkler anyway and when you turn the water on, make sure nothing is plugged. Typically, the water pressure pushes out any of the dirt that fell in, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I usually just untwist the old sprinkler, no need too dig
That can work great too!
