Super helpful. A couple of things to keep in mind. These things come in 1/2 inch and 3/4 (and probably other sizes). You can buy converters between sizes. Also, one end is male and the sprinkler is female. And, if your sprinkler is super deep, you can buy extenders (some of which are male/female which is perfect) in many sizes. Some come in sizes, with new threads every inch or so, so you can cut them to a specific length. Go forth and fix stuff!
Something not mentioned, it would be a good idea to cut a circular or square swath 3-4 inches deep around the sprinkler head to remove grass. Remove carefully as you would want to replace on top after repacking dirt in the hole dug after repairing or replacing the head. This way it will minimize any need to replant or reseed the area.
Always shovel your dirt out onto a piece of plywood or cardboard and not just out onto the lawn. This way you are easily able to recover all the dirt to put back instead of losing some into the lawn and end up with a low spot around the sprinkler from losing some of the dirt. also use a shovel to cut a circle or square a few inches down around the sprinkler and then pull out the lawn plug and place on your board. His way after replacing the dirt you can replace the plug on top and usually you can’t tell you just dug up the sprinkler.
Hey Mark, thanks for sharing the knowledge. I am currently sleep deprived but I do not recall you using teflon or plumbers tape to enhance leak free connections. I use plumbers tape at each connection. May be overkill but not that expensive, but again thanks for sharing the knowledge.
As Danny said, it is always a good idea to use Teflon or plummers tape to make sure that there is no leakage. It’s annoying to have to put on, but it can’t hurt anything and it can actually prevent leaks, so I highly recommend doing that in the future.
Try to install the new head flush with the grass. Add a new taller riser if you use the same size sprinkler head size to get it flush with the grass. There female to male risers that will allow you to add a few inches of height by simply screwing F-M riser to the old riser. There are also tools for removing sprinkler heads without digging a big hole. If you have a lot of heads to replace that is much easier than digging holes all over your yard.
As Jim said, it is very nice to have a sprinkler that is flush with the ground. Over time, the grass can grow so thick over the sprinkler that, if unmonitored, can actually block the sprinkler from coming above the ground. This can flood the ground and it can’t be all that good for the sprinkler head.
Do you have any videos on how to replace the elbow if it gets broken. No one is showing how to do that just replacing the head or taking out a riser. I can’t get the elbow out of the supply line.
Thanks for the video I didn’t know how till I seen this. Sure feel good about myself that I m able to fix my stuff without paying someone else to . 👍👍👍
My land lady loves to jump on the mower and buzz around the lawn is if she is at the Indy 500. And she just clips the tops off any sprinkler head that has not retracted the full length. I have told her countless times to walk the lawn first and make sure the heads are all down , she is just a little bitty thing so I have being changing the broken heads for her. Now I hide the keys for the mower , takes me less time to mow the grass than to run into town and pick up new heads every week ( 35 heads in seven sets of five )
I have an old copper irrigation system. what's the best and easiest way to rise the heads to the current grass level? The current heads don't even seem to be solder on the pipe.
thank you for the video! got a bad sprinkler right in the middle of my yard. I know because I have a patch of yellow grass starting to grow right in the middle of the yard! :P (hope it's an easy fix like this video)
That ring thing on the top...are those standard sizes? I ran over one with the mower and broke one tonight. I need to replace the ring and nozzle. I'm pretty sure it's fine underground.
The control panel controls the water that goes into each zone. As long as the particular zone you are working with is off at the panel there will be no water in the lines. Hope this helps. Very detailed video Mark. Thx for sharing.
They are correct. If you do not turn the water off, not only will you get totally soaked, but your hole will fill up with water which just makes everything way more difficult.
first of all dont buy sprinkler parts from home depot or lowes... Go to your local plumbing supply and stay away from ORBITS, TORO and K Rain! Go with rainbird. -an irrigation tech
I noticed this was in front of your home..i have same problem...do i need to shut of water from main line in front where sidewalk(city) is..or as long as my valve is off i can do this??
As long as your sprinklers are running off of a separate supply (like a well) just turn off the pump to make these repairs. No need to shut off the main water unless your sprinklers are running off your home water supply.
Sprinkling and getting the grass wet, tapping it for comfort, the sound puddles make as you step in, digging the hole, adjusting the pressure in the nozzle, turning her 180°, making sure the head has free motion, and of course fertilizing so it can grow. Lol i hadn't thought about this until i read your comment.
I just went in after watching this video in 2024 and these same heads are now $9.25. I should have checked the date on this video to manage my expectations haha
One time my lawn guy broke 6 sprinklers, with a combination of techniques: 1) with the weed eater 2) running over the whole sprinkler with his Zero Turn Law Mower 3) not looking where he's stepping and just walks right on top of the sprinkler head. W T actual F. I now charge him $5.00 per broken sprinkler. BUT He still breaks them E V E R Y T I M E - he comes to cut the lawn. My whole existence in this World is to Fix what Other people Break.
What he removed from that riser was a shrub adapter and nozzle. That nozzle was actually a rainbird 12van nozzle which could have been adjusted to spray at any degree... might have saved him some money and trip if he knew that.
It depends on if you can get the threaded nipple off. If you can you can, you can just replace that part but if you can’t the may end up needing to replace the entire upward section of pipe. This is a fairly labor intensive process, and will require lots of digging.
I'm in South FL, come fix mine...LOL. I got to correct a problem I have. I don't know what happened but I think one of my sprinkler heads blew up or something because when it comes on, it's a damn fountain flooding my lawn. I will dig in tomorrow morning and get to the bottom of it. Thanks for the video.
Probably large air bubbles trapped somewhere in the line. Have you tried unscrewing and removing the head at the last point on each line and letting the water flow for a minute while the head is off? This might help flush the air out. "Noise Is Coming From My Sprinkler Valve | Hunker" www.hunker.com/13404597/noise-is-coming-from-my-sprinkler-valve
Hi Mark, thanks for this video. it was helpful. I have two questions . Firstly what is the first sprinkler that you show in the video that is supposed to spray in a 90 degree angle called ? And secondly how do you go about replacing it if the white pipe underneath it is broken? ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks
Instead of wasting on digging he could've taken off the head and flush it. I always do that and they always pop up back out .. But it's better to switch the old
Not what he is using his is a fixed spray no oscillation the one you are looking at has more adjustments and features. If I were him I would use some tape on those joints.

Thanks I’m a single woman this helped me fix my sprinkler
This video helped me fix my sprinkler heads! I’m a single homeowner so very grateful for all the detail. Thanks.
Thanks man. The shot at home depot was great. It clears things up a ton.

I found taking the head off and running the system to be helpful as well. It was insane how much mud came shooting out of that pipe.
Thank you for the instructional video!
Very informative. I’m a single mom and have to be miss fix it so thank you for the help!! 💖
Exactly what I needed to see. Video helped me replace a broken sprinkler head on my own. Thanks!
I was able to fix my broken sprinkler head for 10 bucks after watching your video! I had no idea how to fix it before. Many thanks for this!!!
Way easier than I thought.. thanks for sharing... I loved that you showed the price also the types at home depot.

I enjoyed going on the journey with you.

Very cool I did the same thing at my childhood house I have some 3 inch pop up sprinkler heads that I replaced with 4 inch pop ups👍
Thanks for the thorough video. Working on the sprinklers here but didn't know where to start.
Is the sprinkler head too low? Would a 1" riser helps? Should the sprinkler head be level with the grass? Nice and clear video.
Thanks for the video I didn’t know how till I seen this. Sure feel good about myself that I m able to fix my stuff without paying someone else to . 👍👍👍
I watch this video every day. I already new how to, but I like watching the vid!
Can you imagine doing 40 of those? I got 40 of them in my backyard alone. I’m gonna change them all out this coming winter.
Exactly what I needed to see, great video and awesome job at explaining the steps as well as what to look for!

Fixed! Digging a hole around the sprinkler head was backbreaking! Thanks again!
Yes, yes! You, sir, were down on your knees! Typical for a lawn contractors, but not for a home owner. Just saying.
Well I guarantee you'd hate my job then. Underground plumbing and utilities. Digging ain't that bad once you get used to it.
@@danwhite3227 I been digging for 4years n I don't think I will ever get used to it

what type/name of grass you have on your lawn?
We added your video to our blog. Good information!
That ring thing on the top...are those standard sizes? I ran over one with the mower and broke one tonight. I need to replace the ring and nozzle. I'm pretty sure it's fine underground.

Do you need to turn the water off before replacing the in-ground pop up sprinkler? A different video I watched said it is a must.
The control panel controls the water that goes into each zone. As long as the particular zone you are working with is off at the panel there will be no water in the lines. Hope this helps. Very detailed video Mark. Thx for sharing.

For the riser sprinklers how do u know if you need replace the whole thing or just the head?
first of all dont buy sprinkler parts from home depot or lowes...

-an irrigation tech
no, go to Lowe’s and buy sprinklers there
Super helpful and informative video, thanks!
Would've been nice to see the results...
3:10 they aren't longer because you "need to go further down to your pipe" they are are longer in case you need to pop up higher over taller grass.
That sprinkler looked to be sitting way too low. Am I wrong?
I noticed this was in front of your home..i have same problem...do i need to shut of water from main line in front where sidewalk(city) is..or as long as my valve is off i can do this??

Thanks, Mark; this is a helpful video!
Great video like how you explain and showed every step helped me out a lot
How do I fix the springkler like in the beginning of the video where the water is just pouring out?
Man, the most critical part was missed. The video showing the sprinklers in action
I just went in after watching this video in 2024 and these same heads are now $9.25. I should have checked the date on this video to manage my expectations haha
It’s really crazy lol
Do we turn water off when fixing these?
Really appreciate the video! Thanks so much!
Very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks for this very informative video. On my way to Home Depot!!
That 3 inch sprinkler is below the dirt level, is there a reason you didn't replace it with a 5 inch body?
NVM. That four inch was still too low though imo good video though
Awesome video, really helpful. Thanks!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for sharing. Very informative
Anyone ever have the new sprinkler head break, once the system runs? That 'Rain Bird' used at 10:00 was what I'd replaced.
You should clean and spray paint the exposed white pvc. It degrades in uv light and will get brittle

I watched the entire video but did not show how they worked after ????
I find this so funny that someone out there on TH-cam has no idea how to fix this !!
