Another locksmith trick only real life will teach you. always check if clip or tailpiece is on the cylinder before inserting a key. And try to always have a finger on the front of the plug, when pulling out keys just to be safe

Trivia answer: mild steel, usually with chrome plating.
I believe current production is a slightly harder steel with zinc plating.
