  • @firesuch

Had 2 Camrys before. Did close to 300k mileage in each car. Very reliable. However, the steering in both cars became heavier as the cars accumulated mileage. Solid yes but my shoulders & neck ache every time I return from a long journey. Relaxing and effortless to drive though. The wallet is always happy, nothing much to spend maintaining it throughout the period of ownership. Eventually bought a Passat, lighter steering and far more powerful. Now into more than 5 years of ownership having accumulated more than 155k. So far so good.

Definitely more expensive. Mine is the 1.8 liter version with a dry clutch gearbox so you have the clutch pack issues which, in my case, occurred once. The other issues include the wheel bearings and the booth lid which was faulty, all of which were covered during warranty (5 years unlimited mileage). Considering I do outstation runs at least once or twice a month, (and I drive hard most of the time) it’s been very reliable. The brakes particularly, are very long lasting. I have till to date (it’s done 169kms) replaced the brake pads twice but not the discs.
Im advised to replace the tensioner for the timing chain on the next service interval (when the mileage hits 180kms).
The costly part is the servicing which is easily twice or thrice that for the Camry, especially each 60k interval. But then again, the servicing intervals for the Camry, if my memory serves me right, used to be 5k, for the Passat it is 15k.
I notice that most who complain of problems with their Passats are those who drive leisurely and only occasionally. I drive often and hard & have had very little issues. The car is very economical too. I can get 1,000kms if I observe the speed limit, which I rarely do. The main thing that I do not like is the sound proofing (which can be resolved by adding more sound proofing material) and the bushes that feel hard and noisy (makes a clunky sound). Asked the tire shop chaps to hoist the car and spray some PTFE silicone spray (not WD 40) on the rubber bushes. This helped quieten the sounds a fair bit, much nicer now.
For the asking price, it’s a very good machine. Very enjoyable drive. Hope this info helps.

    Few comments who might help:
    1. The rear window blind can be operated using the menu from dashboard. Its located amongst settings or setup. Its bad that its so hidden deep there, but you can.
    2. The left front leather stitch was intended to enable a feature where you can nod/tilt down the headrest to 90 degrees for a better road view for the “boss” (rear passanger). No one can sit in front if the headrest is tilted.
    3. As with many other reviews, you are missing the killer feature of TSS semi autonomous driving. You are simply off from pedal work, as the car has all speed cruise control. It can stop, and follow cars effectively, even turn the steering wheel. Really is a Killer feature for me.. beats every european car in its price range.
Other than the above, an excellent review and comments which I agree most of it.

The new Camry is definitely nice, but people who are in the market for a German car, definitely won't look at the Camry. Those who don't care about the reliability, because they'll sell the car for the next model after the warranty and free servicing is over.
That being said, I like the new Camry. It looks really good, and it looks way better than its direct competitor, the Honda Accord. Honda dropped the ball with their current designs, I'd say the current Camry looks like what the previous Accord once was.
Sad to see that the sedans are slowly dying though. But it is what it is when most consumers prefer SUVs these days.

@@rstz4450 let me answer for you. Nope. 3 series aren’t that comfortable. Expensive or not is subjective. But it gets comfortable from 5 series onwards. But even 5 series is not too comfortable. Get the 7 series or S class segment if you’re looking for all out comfort

It's a bigger car with more features, bigger cc engine, and it's CBU. Of course it's going to cost even more.
