    Excellent explanation on The 3 Plate Method series, no one explains it better than you. Thanks. I saw a method where rotating the part consecutively/randomly would give the most flattest surface finish, looks really weird with many crisscrosses, seen this from Don at suburban tools youtube, they have the same exact surface grinder you have.

    As a suggestion, mill the flats on just the bottom of the plates to provide a 90 degree reference. That will provide a reference without changing the lapping plate geometry.
    As an alternative, I mounted mine in the mill (1/16th end mill for cutting) and cut all of the parallel grooves. Then, I turned it 90 degrees and used an indicator on first grooves to make sure it was at very close to 90. Cheers man!

    Phew - when I saw the first version I thought one of us was on a bad acid trip🤪😜🤪😜🤪😂😂😂 think you should put the old one back just for laughs👍👍👍👍

      Thanks for being so understanding. My editing software - Vegas Video, has this weird quirk where it will slide a few clips backward on top of other items on the timeline when you delete a bunch of them with auto-ripple on. I did not notice when I hit render. I really hate deleting clips because I lose all of the comments and so many of them are helpfully constructive.

    Could you use a rotary table to get your 90 degree cuts?

      I could if I had one big enough. I only have an 8" rotary table and the discs are 8 1/4". That would make clamping a challenging problem. I am thinking about getting a round magnetic chuck for the rotary table.

      @@DudleyToolwright You could also make a larger plate to go on top of the rotary table to give you more real estate. That is what I did for my 8" one. Now of course I have a 15" one I can use but heavy as hell to lift onto the table. LOL!

      @@DudleyToolwright No worries. I have a set of plates turned on the lathe, but I haven't gotten to grooving them yet. I am thinking about a cutoff wheel on the surface grinder. I look forward to seeing what you do.

    Could you do the 3 piece method by using 2 plates but use both sides so by making 2 of the 4 sides C then you can do A-B-C-C would that affect the opposite side by doing that and the only reason I’m asking is I only have 2 drops

      I don't think it would work but you could get it somewhat flat and then scrape it in if you have a good reference plate.

      I think that is an interesting solution. I don't think the back of one plate would be effected by the front, provided that the plate was thick enough. Your solution could save purchasing a 3rd plate. I like it.

      A->B A !
      C->B
      B->C
      C->A
      A->C

      You are absolutely right. I did not think the whole process through. At some point you would want to rub the front of the plate on the back which would be impossible.

    i appreciate precision as much as the next guy but does it really matter if the crosshatching is perfect squares or slight rhombuses?

      It does not at all. Half the number probably would be fine and diamond shaped would probably be fine as well.

    Why isn't the x/y travel of a mill sufficient for very close to 90 degree lines?

      I never considered that approach. I was considering using a slitting saw on the mill and would have had to work some magic to use the x-y axis to cut the grid.

      It is a short cut, but so was using the lathe to face the discs. I could have gotten identical results if I had started with the rough cut blanks. I appreciate the humor. Those plates were really heavy (~25 pounds - 12Kgm) and I think my arms would have fallen off if I had to have started from really rough stock.

      @@DudleyToolwright When I did mine I would guess they were off by .3mm in places after I surfaced them. I started with valve grinding compound and it went pretty quick. though my plates were only 5lbs. I don't think you need a 25lb plate, my ~1" thick plates seem stable.
