    I'm not sure how watching helps but I'm gonna watch all of these old videos and pray that it makes a difference. Also praying for this dear family as my heart breaks for them.

    I’m so grateful for this video and laundry detergent. I started making it maybe 10 years ago and stopped making it a few years ago. With the inflation and high prices, I’m going back to making this detergent.
    I’m still amazed we only need 2 tablespoons of detergent to clean an entire load of clothes! Wow! This is such a blessing and saves a lot of money! Thank you thank you!!

    I also grate the zote by hand (an old box grater) and I let it dry out on a table (in the garage) overnight. Then into an old blender to make fine powder. Then mix in the other dry ingredients.

    When I made my detergent, I bought the box of Zote flakes. I have RA and at age 75, I chose the easy way. I will run out by the end of the year, so I need to begin collecting the different products, so I can make a new batch.
    I have really enjoyed your videos. God bless you.

      To it’s so much easier when I was grating that soap my hand was killing me I love the flakes, such a lifesaver.

    You can buy Zote flakes at Walmart also. So you don't have to shave the bars.

    I'm in my sixties and my grandmother used Fels-Naptha in the early 50s for getting the heavy grease stains from farm equipment out of mechanic's coveralls. Naptha is petroleum based (fused benzene rings) and when turned into a solid it is the stuff that mothballs are made from. As you may know, naptha is also the base for gasoline which is a very good solvent but of course too explosive for household use. So, you can use the safer and less aromatic than gasoline Fels-naptha soap to make your homemade laundry detergent a little more aggressive when it comes to greasy stains but it may not smell quite as nice. I wouldn't use it for the baby's laundry though. Originally made by the Fels soap company in 1893, later by Dial/Henkel. Now you know what it is. Dawn dish soap uses a petroleum base for greasy dishes as well. Hope this helps.

      If you read the ingredients and the info online, you will see that Fels-Naptha stopped using naphtha decades ago. Just the name remains. 😉

    I tried this recipe. And I was not expecting my clothes to be as clean as it turned out. To be honest I did not want to grate my fingers off. So i had used a food proccessor to grate the Zote bars. Over All I'm Pleased with this recipe.Thanks for Making this video it was fun to watch.

      I use my Kitchen Aid mixer with the grater attachment. The soap shards are a little bigger, but still melt nicely in the washer, whether hot or cold water. As SuperSaltyDog77 suggested, you could let the soap air dry, then put it into the blender to turn into a powder, if you prefer using the bar soap. (I don't do this, though, and it works just fine.)

      You don’t need to use a food process of Walmart sells the flakes the zoot flakes you don’t have to grate anything

    My husband is laughing at me because I've been watching DIY laundry detergent videos all night. I'm going into my 2nd year of making my own detergent. LOVE IT!! But you are the 1st video that I've watched who've figured out the coffee scoop! I do also because when my husband "helped" do laundry, he used too much. Now he knows to use only 1 scoop! Loved your video! You & your husband are pretty cool & funny! LOL

      Also instead of using fabric softener, I use 1/4- 1/2 cup white vinegar.

  • @TheKneadyHomesteader
    @TheKneadyHomesteader  11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    SMART!!!!!!!! I will definitely try that next time cause shredding 2 bars non stop made us both want to cry. HAHAHAHAA

  • @jewellm61
    @jewellm61 11 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    You can soften your clothes by putting 1/2 cup of white vinegar in your rinse water. It's a natural fabric softner. Your clothes won't smell like vinegar either. Not only will your clothes not smell like vinegar, but the white vinegar will remove any residual soap from your clothes plus help remove soap scum from your washer!
    The other day, this guy was using up the last of his Tide. After he took out the clothes, on a whim, he decided to wash the same clothes in his homemade laundry soap. He was shocked to see dirty water! Of course, it wasn't as dirty as the Tide wash water, but as expensive as Tide is, that water should have not even been dirty!
    I cannot see myself going back to store brand laundry soap. The homemade doesn't have all the chemicals and fillers. Also, it cleans better and is cheaper. That's amazing!

    • @SuperTamig
      @SuperTamig 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      See I can’t do that because vinegar stinks and I don’t want my clothes smelling like vinegar L O L you can also make homemade fabric softener to me they smell like vinegar, but I might just have a sensitive nose Lol

    • @SuperTamig
      @SuperTamig 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, it actually does because the borax is a chemical and so is the other stuff that we’re using

    I figured out an easier trick on the mixing put it in a garbage bag its super easy to mix that way. I double mine up to ensure nothing comes out works fantastic. You can even snip the corners if you don't want to reuse trash bag and it makes it easy to fill containers.

    I'm going to try this! I do three other families laundry twice a week including my family's. So we purchased another washing machine and dryer. I've found its a good way to make extra money and stay home at the same time. But I only use powder laundry soap. This will save my family a lot of money too since I provide the soap.

    Hi there! A little tip you can use the next time you make your next batch, so that your soap doesn't clump while mixing, is to spread it out on cookie sheets after you grate it and let it dry for about two days (as long as you don't need it right away). It'll break up even more for you when you start mixining it all up with the other powders. I've cut it up into quarters and let them dry before grating it, but the moisture still remains in the center. So the cookie sheets work best for me =)

    I was told by a lady to grate the soap, then spread it on like a cookie sheet or wax paper and leave it over night to dry out. That seems like a quick way to dry it out, as it seems pretty thin when watching you grate it first. Good video!

    I have been making my own laundry soap for over a year now with wonderful results. My whites are much whiter. I use one bar of Zotes, 1 cup of Borax, 1 cup of Washing Soda, and 1 cup of the cheap off-brand "OxyClean" from Dollar Tree. It is easier to use a food processor to grate the soap. (I have a dedicated food processor that gets used for nothing else.) I do not mix the softener/fragrance crystals in with the final mixture. I throw about 1/4 of a cap or less into the water as the washer is filling. This combo has worked great for me and is much cheaper than the store bought laundry soap.

    Before the year is up, mine hardened from the moisture in the air alone as I live in a very humid climate. That's why I make a similar recipe using exactly the same ingredients but with hot water to melt the Zote. It makes a liquid/gel detergent that I love. The Zote if you close your eyes, smells exactly like Ivory soap. The Fels Naptha smells more like lemon verbena, having lemongrass as one of its' ingredients. I LOVE THE SMELL OF PINK ZOTE! Thanks for this video. You have helped a lot of viewers to save money, not to mention given them a detergent for those new, low suds washing machines!

    I made this soap last night and it smells great! Washes really good too! For the Zote soap I used the big side of my cheese grater(much faster) and then put it in my ninja blender with about 1/4 cup of the baking soda(so it doesn't clump or stick) and it blended into a powder. I will never buy store bought detergent again!!

    This is THE BEST recipe for laundry soap. All my nasty running clothes smell fresh and I thought I would never get the sweat smell out, but this does it!! So far my soap has lasted 16 months, it's just me and my husband. The food processor trick worked for me. That's after drying the Zote soap out for a couple days.

    Have you thought about dehydrating the soap shavings then regrind in a food processor or coffee grinder? It would be drier, smaller, and easier to dissolve.

    Great job! I've made this soap as well and I love it. May I also suggest using an essential oil such as Tea Tree to add freshness. The oil can be added at time of wash. Add a few drops with each load. I've seen liquid soap recipes that added the essential oil. I've always made the powdered version. Melting the soap bars are too much work for me. I've used both soaps. The dryer the soaps the better. This is fun and I love the savings.

    I mix mine in a clean, dry bathtub; and it works well. The little bit of residue left can be used to wash/scrub down the tub/shower enclosure. The rinse it off with 50/50 vinegar and water and towel dry and you have lots of laundry soap plus a clean and shiny bathtub and surround. Makes the bathroom smell really clean too.

    I think the microwave usually moisten things. Like if you warm up french toast in the microwave it gets really soggy. The oven is dry heat and wouldn't turn things soggy or lumpy, idk.

    One of the important things when mixing dry powders, especially Borax and Arm/Hammer soda(s) is even distribution. Especially if you're using a soap that becomes moist and clumps. If you can mix the powders together evenly with slowly added bar-soap, you will have less mixing, and less clumping. And high balanced yields.

    I make the homemade detergent with my own homemade 100% coconut oil. But the Zote works great too. I use a salad shooter to grate the soap and I allow the grated soap to dry for 3-5 days. after that I use a food processor to grind the dried grated soap to a powder. Then I add the other ingredients and whisk with an electric whisk. BEWARE OF THE SOAP DUST! It will choke a mule.

    I have started doing this kind of mix few months ago. What I did different is I don't use the hard bar. I suspect to be a soap out of animal fat and I'm vegan. And basically it's use is to let you feel that you have enough soap through the bubbling in the machine. So I mix the baking soda, the borax and the oxyclean in the proportion I feel OK, and when I proceed to washing, I start with this dry mixture and add enough for the load to dissolve it in the water to clean. Then I use a touch of tide just enough to see bubbles on top when it shaking. With practice this amount could then be premixed inside the baking soda borax mixture in advance using dry tide or other laundry detergent. it takes like A tea spoon or so of liquid detegent per load. you want just the begging of bubbling, not more.

Between me, my boyfriend, and my best friend (who has a big golden retriever), we go through more laundry than you think! Thanks for the upload and recipe!

    I tried it with both Zote and Naphtha. I was going to try a batch of each, but got the number of bars wrong, when shopping, so I made one batch with 1 Zote and 2 Naphtha. With both, I used the large cheese grater by hand. Very quick! But, then I let the shreds dry out overnight. Then I ran it through my old metal vita mixer (3 horsepower blender). Wonderfully fine powder.

    Great video! I make my own laundry soap too. I am in Canada and I do not get those bar soaps. I use original ivory bar soap instead. It works great. I have also experimented with some scented and colored bars, and they all seem to work out fine. So your not restricted to 'laundry bar soap' for this recipe. Good luck!!

    Oh I love the smell of that soap. That’s what I use to wash dishes and also for my homemade laundry detergent. Tip for you. I chop it into cubes and then fine chop them in an old food processor i got from a consignment store. Saves lots of time and energy and fingers 😂 also, if your hubby has a concrete mixer he can adapt it to an electric drill and mix it faster. I got one for $14 at Lowe’s and it works great. I make my soap both liquid and powder

    I made this recipe but instead of putting oxiclean or biz in it I used the La's awesome orange oxygen base from the dollar tree. I used 2 of them( they are 32 oz ea).
    It lasted for a year. My zote was gunking up my hand grater too. So this yr. I added a few bars of fels naptha with my zote. I grated a bit of zote and alternated some of the fels naptha. And then followed the rest of the recipe.
    The fels actually cleaned the zote off my grater as I went. I had an older regular top load washer and this worked great. I now have a top load he whirlpool washer and I use the 1-2 tblsps.in it with cold water. And it dissolves well...i put it in the drum before adding my laundry. Oh! And instead of purex crystals I used 4 of the 10.5 oz scent boosters from dollar tree.

    Zote makes boxed soap flakes now that I've used in my laundry detergent! It's so much easier than grating the bars. My local Walmart carries them but I think they offer them online also. The box says that one box equals two bars of the Zote soap. It's only in the white form instead of the pink ones but they still have a scent to them and are well worth it.
