I remember those days well. I spent every week in our basement with my mother doing laundry on our Maytag wringer washer , and a No. 2 washtub for rinsing clothes. Then outside to hang on T pole clothesline. For a family of 7, it took almost all day to do laundry. The next day ,it was ironing day!
Thank you both for sharing your videos. 😀

Yep, same with me, only ours was in the garage so carried buckets of water to copper boiler over a 2 burner gas stove. Then carried all the cold water buckets for 2 rinses. I had the job of all the wringing. Hung on line and brought them in frozen stiff at end of day. We did this all my life until I moved away.

Build a ‘wash room’ with a small wood burner and room to hang the clothes. 👍 For washing in the winter but the washroom would work for rainy weather in other months. 👌

In our cabin in interior of Alaska we had a removable clothes line in main room. We'd all take baths then add hot water and soap. Had a glorified plunger made of metal.
Had a wringer I still have & we all worked together. School clothes hung closest to wood stove.

I used a wringing washier for years.... adjusted the head so it wrings the water back in the tub and you aren't standing in it. I had a long garden hose on mine draining into the asparagus or flower patches. Also do a separate rince cycle gets more soap out

  • @deemail100
    @deemail100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

we load whites first (while water's hot) along with full soap measure,
fill 2 rinse tubs while washer is agitating...
then move wringer to side (over rinse tub)...wring everything into 1st rinse...
add colored clothes to empty washer along with half the amount of soap...
let colored agitate while pulling whites from 1st rinse, into 2nd rinse tub (keep tubs close so you can just move wringer over them)....
from second rinse to basket for hanging...
hang whites, colored will now be ready for rinse 1...
as soon as coloreds are in rinse 1, darks to washer along with half soap again...
    repeat,
This takes from an hour to an hour and a half to two hours, depending on how long you agitate, but you are busy all the time and everything is rinsed twice and hung when you are done. It was killing me to see you rinse one item at a time.... do the whole load so you can get the next one washing... okay....that's my two cents, and that's all it's worth, but I wanted to get in the video and help you so bad.... sorry.... of course, I do not mean to insult or hassle you... but something tells me your mother didn't wash in a wringer washer.

When we were living in Lanagan, Mo when I was 17, Daddy didn't get a washer so I scrubbed the clothes in the tub with a metal scrub board and a glass scrub board for our delicates. I squeezed everything out by hand. Towels, blankets, and jeans KILLED my hands! Then I hung them out on the line to dry. In the winter I had a nail on one wall and a nail in the other. On wash day, I stretched the line from one wall to the other in the side the pot belly stove was and I would get the fire burning hot so the clothes would dry. I did laundry for 9 people every other day. Couldn't let it go any longer than that or else I'd have never seen the light of day again. 😂
If I had it to do over, one of these old washer/ringer jobs would have made life so much easier. 😥😭

I'm 46 years old now but this reminds me of when I got married, I was 19, going to college and working at my mother's bookstore in town but living in the country, there were no such things as laundromats in my town and my parents whom had washing machine lived about 30-45 minutes away, I did laundry by hand on a wooden washboard with castile soap and had to hang our clothes in a line up the hill where we lived, no fun when it rained lol
While it was a lot of work and back breaking at times, I look back now and think of how simple life was then. No, I don't want to do it again, but if I had to I wouldn't have a problem.

I have been off grid for over 30 years and have always done laundry in a bucket with a hand made plunger made from a shovel handle or broom handle and a plastic bottle with the bottom cut off. I don't like to wring out stuff so I use two five gallon buckets with a piece of plastic lattice over the top to drain the laundry between wash and rinse cycles. I rinse two times though because I like to get all the soap and dirt out and found the second rinse does this. I count pumps when I am doing the laundry. 200 for a wash, 200 for first rinse and 100 for second rinse. I have gone to the laundromat from time to time for big stuff, but can do sheets and afgans in the large buckets like you use for rinse.

In 1960 my Dad went to England (from NZ) for 6 wks. He used to hop in the shower in his shirt and underwear, wash the shirt first then take it off. He would take off his undies and socks to wash them. I actually think Mum told him how to manage without her. Most men back then didn’t do women’s work so didn’t know how to. He lived to 93 years and never did the washing again.

Neena Me, no one would dispute that to you... there comes a point when you have to choose sanity over money savings in some instances. When the kids are older they can help even with automatic washing. Many hands make the chores go much faster, and I think kids appreciate their clean cothes much more when they have been involved in the process. 😊 You're a trooper! I grew up with 2 girls, 1 the oldest of seven, and 1 the oldest of 8. Their Mom's were worn out, burnt out, and mentally exhausted all the time...the parents didn't train their kids to help and there was always kayoss. I remember how both Moms would lock themselves in their bedrooms & the Dad's would have to come home from work and make huge meals for everyone. You're right to do what keeps things running smoothly in your household. Especially laundry, and especially if it's not a favorite chore. I love doing laundry but I hate vacuuming and scrubbing floors due to a lower back unjury. It's different for everyone, & whatever works for you, is, ok. 💜

I would be calling it the "Grub & Suds Shack", definately since its outdoors its shelterd from the cold winter wind,& heat from the stove that does an all day burn to cooking stews ect. and provides a nice place to do the maytag washing of your clothes. Since being raised growing up my family up bringing was always doing the out door cooking in a shack next to our clothes line f/drying them in the summer that shack also was our out door kitchen/shower bath house as well providing a good heated area to bathe up in and not be too cold in the winter months. Of course it was an alternative thing to do being outside away of mere steps from the main house. But in the summer heat an out door kitchen sheltered from the rain was the cheese in being the thing we did. But in the winter, maybe we spent more time out door kithen/bath house/laundry room than we did in the mainhouse were we as kids stayed away from the parents that might find us another chore to do...lol. But if something ever came up they needed? It wasnt hard to find us all outside in the grub'n'suds Shack doing our own little things like school work to craft projects to just playing cards or any other types of board games and a good area we had set aside to having alot more room to having guest over to have them congragate there of course. My mother made cushions for providing a comfortable seat no dought. But when we had guest over to knowing in advance they were coming over? those cushions disappeared into a locked closet. Later in life I asked my dad why he had locked up those cushions for? He said,"Getting guest to comfortable?" REALLY? "Why they might be so willing to staying longer than we really wanted them too?" lol. But I just know My dad in particular always wished they would be welcomed back to staying longer next time...Go Figure. Well no vistor left with any empty stomach I know everyone ate even seconds and we as kids never was ever permitted to takening the last bread roll if only a couple was left at the end of our meals. Those were always up for our guest to have. So, Growing up and being now 6'10"tall, well my excuse was always 1st at the meal table and being the last to leave. We kids always learned to doing the sewing and cooking prep or other in everything else we did. And today Being 58 years old still single I find Im a better rounded out than most squares I find so rigid being at least a woman to knowing the basics other than MacDonalds or other fast food dives they all seem to wants in a waisted drive to having an excuse to go to town for any reason than staying out here where I have my solitude of peace and quite & Working my horses to having my best in companion an helper Dog. Never complains and always willing to please. & Thats basically the simple truth of it all. Thank you guys for your world as you share it and I enjoy seeing somethings never change being its about the best way I lived to knowing it is anyways. C-ya! ;)

In the early 50’s we lived in a shed the size of a single garage and I small caravan for 3 yrs while Dad built the house in the weekends. Our bathroom/laundry was a tin shed with a dirt floor. Water was heated in a copper boiler, clothes and soap added and stirred with a stick. The clothes were hocked out by stick into 2 concrete wash tubs with a hand wringer in the middle. Whites all first, colours, darks, extra dirty it was like a production line. The boiler water had to be topped up and the rinse water was changed, Sheets, towels Etc were done another day. Baby nappies were done every day separately and put back into clean water in the boiler to boil after being washed and rinsed. With 4 kids there were always nappies. An old cast iron bath filled with buckets of water heated in the boiler was fun with all us kids in together, the bathroom was cosy with its little fire burning for the boiler and sack mats on the floor. We had a long drop out house in the orchard. Finally we moved into the house when the last baby was one and Mum got a spin washer and indoor plumbing and electricity at last.

She had a rubber bottom ladder back chair and a big wash tub she would sit down in waist deep water , she use a scrub board. She made her own lye soap. My aunt and myself would go up creek from her soapy water and we rinsed the piece and wrung it out by hand! They didn't have electric until I was 15 in1960 ! Winter we done the wash in the kitchen with two tubs ! Guess you could say we really lived off grid !

When I was growing up, my mom had a wringer washing machine. She started out doing the white clothes and put all the clothes from washer thru wringer , letting water drain back into washer (for next load of light colors). Put clothes into rinse water, run thru wringer (saving that water also for next load to rinse). And so on, ending with dark colors. Do you use the same water for all your clothes? Or most all? Doug that was a funny bit you did. Can't believe you actually did that!

If you have a Boy Scout troop they remove their socks. Weigh them wet and then weigh them again after they use the ringer. Then try different methods of folding it to see if they can extract more water with the ringer. It is amazing what they come up with to make work fun.

I don't live off grid, I'm in a large apartment building. Sometimes I don't want to spend money in the laundry machines down the hall, so I'll save some money by washing my clothes in some 5gal buckets in the bath tub. I use the Mobile Breathing Washer and most of the time I make my own detergent. I can make so much more detergent using just 4 ingredients for a lot less money than buying a box of powdered or liquid Tide.
I usually use the Fels-Naptha as part of the detergent. I feel it cleans very well and I like the lemon scent it has. I have tried the Zotes, but that is really hard to find in my area, but it costs about the same as the Fels. But I didn't care for it as much. If I can find the Kirks (haven't seen that stuff in a long time) I'll give it a whirl and see how it preforms.
I'm not afraid of the Borax, the concept of using it doesn't bother me. I can think of worse things to use. I'm sure commercial detergents have worse things hiding in them than borax.
I have a spin dryer and it's great! It pulls more water out of the clothes than a modern top load or front loading washing machine can pull out in it's final spin. I hang my things up on plastic coat hangers on the shower curtain rod and on another spring loaded tension rod I put in the kitchen to dining room area door way. I never worry about drips since using the spin dryer.
I have found that I like doing laundry that way in winter because hanging the clothes in doors helps put some moisture in the air when the air is very dry due to the forced hot air from the furnace. My clothes are often dry the next day, including hard to dry socks and jeans. Some of my thinner shirts can get dry in just a few hours after spinning them in the spin dryer.

I love love love your video using the wringer washer! I've used Maytag wringer washers since I was a little girl. Three are so many advantages to making your own wash powders and using a wringer washer. Less chemicals, no allergic reactions, cleaner clothes, less cost, less water usage, and the leftover water can be used to water plants, depending on detergents used. My Favorite part is being able to do laundry outdoors. Thank you for sharing!

We had a wringer when I was a youngster, and ended up with one as a young mom. I loved it! Only difference was that as the clothes were being put through the ringer, the water ran back into the tub...and was used for the darker load. We were using it in the basement, so we were careful that no water escaped the tub. Loved my wringer!

My grandmother, my mom, and I all had wringer washing machines. We never had a " laundry day. " Every day that the sun was out we did laundry. That's how we could make it through the bad weather days. We always used our machines inside the house so even when it snowed we could wash clothes. On those days we hung our clothes on the back porch to dry. We did quilts and bedspreads coats, and everything in our wringer washer.

I wondered how you managed to get a washing machine outside, and how you dried it in the depths of winter when it's weeks of either rain or snow, I can hang stuff out on a morning and by afternoon it's still just as wet. I use a clothes horse but I have radiators. Can you see a time when you might build an extension to your dinky house?

My mom hand washed her clothes until she died at age 89. When we first married I did our wash in the bathtub including baby cloth diapers. With diapers you rinse them, put them in a pail of water and hand wash them each morning. (do not buy the prefolded) When you are young you can do that, but as you get older you find it is harder. Doing hand laundry you have to put a stop to the kids changing clothes constantly. Kids should have play clothes that can be worn several times as well as their better clothing/school clothes. Underclothing is what touches their skin. I see no problem with going to a laundromat to do the heavy items or to have a washing machine. Even with an automatic washer you can recycle your water. If the kids have to hand wash their own clothing, bet you won't be finding clean clothes thrown in the dirty clothes bin. Yes, we need to know how to be completely off grid should our life come to that, but we have to pick and choose our battles. At 72 I choose to do one load of wash a week, recycle my water, hang the clothes to dry so I can use my time and energy to continue to work in my garden and sew. Doug and Stacy you are living the life we did up until 20 years ago, you really cut down on those clothes when you are hauling your water. LOL enjoyed the video (go to Living on a Dime she has great money/time saving ideas for everyone on or off grid)

consider modifying a rocker washer so that its a treddle system, that way you can mend or whatever with your hands.... while your feet are busy. Also I grew up using a washer like the one you have, but we had a "wash house" where we worked. It had a small pot belly in the building that Mom would heat up when it was winter & she also had a clothes line inside it for winter drying. The room had a concrete floor. Maybe that would salve the problem. (It doubled for summer months as a "cooler" space.
