Being able to write songs and being able to sing them are different things. It shouldn't be a requirement, it would stop us from hearing some beautiful voices.
@@emmafield If it's a personal story you want to tell, that is close to you, you'd probably want to be the one singing it. Also, you will be able to express the lyrics the way you hear it in your head. You can use the emotion in the songs your writing to your advantage and with deeper lyrics you can usually hear the singer's own emotion.

I'm not a singer but I played orchestra band for like 10 years. One thing our director told us all the time was that anyone could play loud and fast. The true test of talent is playing slow and soft while still sounding smooth and passionate within the music.

If you think I am somehow criticizing Billie - I'm not. Just because the title says "vocal coach reaction" doesn't mean that the point of the video is to become Billie's vocal coach. Also, If you think that stating her singing voice is breathy is me implying that she is a bad singer - it's not. Being breathy isn't a bad thing. It's how the vast majority of pop music is sung today. Chill.
Just getting way too many comments on this lately about how I don't deserve to criticize Billie. Billie is a way better singer than I am; that's why I made a point NOT to criticize her. Trish should get into this girl. I had never heard Billie before your first video about her so thank you because she's wonderful. As a singer songwriter myself I so appreciate her writing as well as her vocals and also thank you for saying what I have always thought and stood behind. Having a powerful voice does not always mean you have a great voice and vice versa and yes the same with range. This girl concentrates on tone and making each note beautiful in its own way and really show casing those fantastic lyrics too. I love her use of classic jazz phrasing with a hip hop twist mixed with a very folk lightness. Gives me chills.
Also, I'm looking for lessons because I suffered severe lung damage and some damage to my vocal chords and while I can still sing my voice has really changed and I am having to re learn what works for me really. I was a rock/grunge/blues style singer and I had a lot of power. I am having to change up my style, even the way I write to accommodate a softer voice so I'm really working on tone and phrasing and getting emotion to come across without being able to belt it out or brake my voice. I was a vocal coach for a long time but I don't think I hear myself accurately enough to get myself back to a decent standard on my own. I'm going to check out your Web site.

Simply_ SieSie well yeah, but if you’re actually depressed, not just sad, that’s a mental illness. It’s not going to be cured by someone saying your hair is great. Bad self image also isn’t cured by outside compliments. When your mind is what’s working against you, the only cure for that is to change how your mind is working. And sometimes that’s exceptionally difficult and potentially not possible.

I used to be majorly depressed and luckily I’ve manage to slowly lift that darkness from my life with the help of my friends and doctor, but I remember when people would say similar things to me and it just makes you feel more broken and isolated, because it makes you fall more into that spiral of “why am I not happy? I should be happy. Why am I so broken?” It’s awful and I don’t think people would make those jokes if they understood how it can and does affect the people they’re talking to.
