Your mom really doesn't seem to understand depression and honestly I feel like it can be good a lot of people see it as negative when others just can't fathom being that sad or wanting to kill themselves but I think its good that they won't ever feel sadness in the same way we do it can be bad that they don't know what to do in order to help us but we should feel happy for them instead of being mad that they don't understand why would you ever want someone to understand that.

this really shows you how much adults don’t understand kids these days like when your mom says “i don’t like how she says she doesn’t like herself” or how she says “she needs to love herself” it’s not as easy as she may think, and it’s not about “i’m sad because i want to be sad” sometimes your just sad and it has to be that way until you find it in yourself to make yourself feel better.

It really comes down to adults have more experience making themselves happy or just being happy. Sometimes it's hard to be happy like sometimes doing exercise is hard for some people. I am way happier in my 30s than I ever ever was as a teen and in my 20s. I gained the experience on how to make myself happy. I was never able to completely make myself happy as a young adult without help or meds. I just didn't have the skills or the focus or the mindset. I wish I had these skills when I was younger.

I get it. But his mom has been a mother longer than she’s been a teenager. Take into account all of her life experiences after teenagehood and you sort of forget what that part of your life was like.
Your heart changes when you become a mom. All you want is a life of happiness for your babies, so much so that you would give up your life to ensure that. I understand her when she says she’s doesn’t like hearing those things, because Billie is a kid. She could easily be her kid and hearing Billie say that she doesn’t like herself gets that mom heart hurting because it may as well be her own child saying it, and those protective motherly instincts kick in and your heart breaks because your child is feeling pain.

Finally someone who understands that feeling. I don't want to be alive anymore; but I can't kill myself or I'll end up in hell. So now I feel like I'm stuck living this life I don't want to live, planning for a future I wish I won't have to see, and going through the motions just for show.

Absolutely girls are more prone to this kinda thinking. We are blasted with images of celebrities, now with social media it's something that you can't get away from. She also has spoken in length in interviews with older brother Finneas about how they have a special bond between them because they both are troubled with depression. Finneas put it like this. They had a friend that seemed happy all the time. She would tell them " well I'm not happy, all the time" and Finneas replied " Well we're not happy ALL the time ". I truly believe that more creative minds can be troubled with depression because their brains are wired differently. Like more empathic maybe. Not sure exactly. But if the family experience is common to have depression it could be dna wired. Billie bringing it to her music is her therapy. She is connected with her fans because I feel they also use music as a way of working thru a situation. She writes her music from character perspective so she may not have experience something she writes about, she just gets into character. She calls it her art to be interpreted by listener. She is amazing. She has strong family support. She tours with brother, mother, father and close friends come into certain shows. I am absolutely sure she will only get better with time. When I think back to myself at seventeen, I'm so happy we didn't have cell phones and social media. I may not have made it. I give respect to her for being honest with herself and finding a way to channel thru it. Bbc one channel on TH-cam is great place for your mom to hear more stripped down versions of her songs.
Btw she does not necessarily like to have this conversation but she has diagnosed tourettes syndrome and works thru physical ticks that she has helped relate to others with it. Making them feel less of difference from others. It was accidentally discovered by an interview that didn't edit them out. She would allow ticks to come thru during questions and then answer. She discovered compilation of them and memes etc so she felt she needed to tell others what it actually was. This world can be a cruel place. She is shining her light thru music and letting fans know she appreciates them all.

I really feel for Billie. I've been depressed for as long as I can remember. Sure I have a few memories when I was 5-7 and I was happy, but I have just as many memories of being so sad that I couldn't comprehend it(the younger depression starts, I feel, the harder it is for a child to understand that they're feeling like this.) I lived with a grandmother that didn't believe in mental illness and thought I was 'just being a teenager' when I stopped smiling and I didn't wanna wear my bright happy clothes that she wanted me to wear...and she kept saying I had to act happy to be happy..and I really tried that, but it made it worse. She was actively making me feel worse and worse because she wouldn't listen when I tried to say I needed help.
Then finally i tried to go live with my mother and she really tipped me over the edge. I got in therapy that year when my mom saw how depressed and miserable I was.
And I know this is a lot of random shit, but listening to Billie makes me so emotional and sad cause I /was/ that kid. I still am. Im still having these moments when I look in the mirror and I hate who's looking back at me. Billie's music just touches me and I feel like I do know a little about how she feels..

same. i feel u. ive had depression for as long as i can remeber and i dont remeber being happy. my mom found out abt my depression when i was medically diagnosed, but she ignored it. she said, " dont let what others say get to u. its all in ur head." so when my dad was close to finding out i refused to tell him so he doesnt know. billie helps me cope with that and put my feelings into words. and thats something ppl who dont listen to billie will never understand abt her songs and how they truly r beautiful music

this proves the difference between parents and kids. as a father, it's getting harder and harder for me to understand my teenage kids and i'm trying to keep up with them. when i was their age we just went to school, had a few friends and that was our life. but now, there's so much pressure on kids: be like this, look like this, wear that, drive that. and everything is so exposed that it's very easy for them to get hurt (emotionally) and difficult for us to understand.

I just don't get the people who consider depression as a lack of God. It's not! It's a mental illness that need treatment. Talk to someone, see a therapist or just try to make it another day but if you can't it's OK too.
