To those who are whining and saying we can't compare a phone to a DSLR because a DSLR is better, I think you are missing the point. I don't think a phone will ever replace a professional camera, but, the point is that we are starting to see major improvements in image quality on mobile phones. A few years back, when phones with cameras first started to appear, no one thought they'd get this good. So this kind of comparison IS great, because it shows us how far mobile phones have come, and it does not look like manufacturers are slowing down any time soon.
About the sharpness of the video shot on the Canon 60D; use an actual canon lens, zoom in on the screen to make sure you are in focus, and you can also change the; sharpness, contrast, saturation, color tone, and make a custom white balance rather then running your camera on auto. Sure it takes some time to learn how to do that but after that it will shoot amazing video.
The canon lenses are not necessarily sharper than many of the new sigma lenses, especially the sigma art lenses. The sigma 18-35mm if focused properly far outresolves the sensor of the 60d. It is a given that the dslr will have more flexibility, low light performance, control, dynamic range as well has better ergonomics than the cameraphone, but in terms of pure resolution, the sony wins.
Some are though Dave Dugdale from "Learning DSLR" has done many reviews of lenses same as DigitalRev they did a comparison of cheaper lenses and higher canon lenses like the L series. I will admit shooting video with a DSLR is a beast of a task and focusing is hard. As far as 4k vs 1080, anyone would realize 4k resolution is higher, I would have compared them at 1080 and then added in how awesome the 4k is, not 4k vs 1080.
well if you look at price right of the bat i would say the DSLR looses automatically. Though the point of the video was to compare video and image quality not price. i believe his main point was look at how far cell phones have come. I bet a large portion of the DSLR's will get a refresh soon to allow 4k shooting
TonyZhangsChannel It hardly matters what lens was on the Canon DSLR. The Sigma is comparable to most L lenses in terms of sharpness and rendering, and far excels the sharpness of the kit lens when it comes to stills. But in video mode, the resolution is reduced to 1080p, around 2 megapixels, and is put into(by todays standards) an average codec with poor compression and artifacts, rendering the sharpness of the lens null. The sharpness would be the same had it been an L lens or a kit lens stopped down to about f5.6
Wow sony Z2's video quality is so good and the 120fps slo-mo is awesome. I'll go with sony coz it's a phone , computer, slow mo camera ,4k camera and it's gonna be with u anywhere u go.
I personally think that the fact we're at a point of comparing a smartphone camera against a dedicated DSLR is pretty astounding! Also, it was pretty clear in some of those photos and videos that the Z2 was doing a BETTER JOB than the Canon! Now you can say what you like about the tweakability and flexibility of a DSLR but here's the thing, can your DSLR make phone calls, play games, browse the web, give you satellite navigation with turn by turn directions, edit word documents, play back music, set calendar appointments and do the myriad of other things that a modern smartphone does? Of course it cannot! Sure, the DEDICATED device is better in some ways, but it damned well SHOULD BE! Any DSLR that can be beaten by a camera-PHONE really needs to be scrapped and replaced....simples. But for a camera-phone to be even remotely comparable, even in a limited number of circumstances, is FRIGGIN' AWESOME! There's one other thing to consider too....portability. You CAN get the very BEST by carrying around a phone, portable games console, laptop/tablet, Tom Tom sat nav, MP3 player etc, etc, etc....but you'd better have a pretty large rucksack to do so! OR.....you can carry a modern smartphone (Sony Z2 or even Z3?) and have great functionality in ALL the areas touted by these stand-alone devices, IN ONE SMALL DEVICE! In that respect, and considering how good smartphones now are at ALL of these things, the Sony Z2 (and its successors) wins hands down.
***** The problem is few DSLRs can shot even decent, sharp 1080p. Watching those videos on a 1080 p screen makes it clear that the top smarphones of today simply smash Cannon DSLRs, or any other brand DSLRs (in terms of sharpness, not when it comes to HDR, bokeh or filming in darkness). Cannon, Nikon etc. are too lazy, they still make their cameras like it's 2009, but the time has passed and the technology evolved everywhere else but not here. With bigger sensor and those amazing lenses you could get a crisp, beautifull 4K video easily out of any new DSLR or mirorless camera, but we still don't, with only super high end like 1DS being the exception. Actually the only company that is doing something in this matter and realises it's 2015 is Panasonic, with their GH4. Sony A7S doesn't count in my opinion, it requres additional recorders that cost almost as much as the camera itself :P And when it comes to taking pictures... technically you can download some apps that allow you to set aperture, ISO, shutter speed etc. but in some phones it isn't allowed, you'd need to root your Android first. On the other hand, there are some phones that have those options built in (like Nokia Lumia). I'm not arguing that phones are better in taking pictures than DSLRs because they are much worse, but still, you can set everything just like you need. And when it comes to recording - smartphones win. It's a shame they don't have interchangeable lenses :P
azaszemi2008 I can tell by these Comments there aren't actually any real photographers here. Dslr are very powerful tools but you have to know how to unlock that power and that comes with a lot of experience using dslr's. The guy in this video was very likely shooting in auto which doesn't do a dslr any justice and even than the experia didn't come close, maybe too the untrained eye. People who own a dslr most likely have phones to do their texting play games and all that nonsense. There's so much more he didn't talk about like metering, frames per second, build quality, af , af-e, af-l, long exposures and much more features a dslr has to create great images but you have to get out of auto. In short if your not serious about about your photography and taking it to the next level and don't really want to learn how to use a dslr Your camera phone will do the job. And also there are even entry level dslr's that cost half of what that phone. And to keep making phone calls and texting and have Internet you have to pay every month through time that ads up
It's pretty amazing how far phone cameras have come in such a short time. When I got interested in photography I had Nokia N90, that thing had a very good camera at the time for a phone, able to take 2MP still images. Now any cheap phone can beat it. I own the Xperia Z2, bought it some months back and the camera is pretty nice in good light, but when it gets even a little dark the images are very grainy and colors become washed. Not even near the quality of my DSLR, and it's old and entry level one (Canon EOS 550D). The lens I'm using is not the best either, but still the quality difference is like night and day between the two. But unfortunately carrying a DSLR around all the time is simply not practical, I really wish smartphone cameras keep getting better, a lot better. I want full manual controls for starters, it would really help in low light situations if you could just mount the phone to tripod and set shutter speed low instead of using high ISO. Not quite sure if that is possible already, haven't looked into many "professional" photography apps on the play store. The ones I've checked so far didn't seem to deliver what I wanted though.
My take on all of that: Smartphone cameras are really amazing in daylight. I think I can snap a photo with my Xperia Z and DSLR and most people wouldn't be able to tell a difference. But just take away some of that light and they become terrible. I mean at night or even late afternoon my 10yo, 10Mpx DSLR will completely destroy ANY smartphone.
8:18 the sony have deeper depth of field while the canon shallower.. This is why the video footage on canon looks blurry I think you make bit mistake there.
At 6:30, you're going on about how the Z2 has matching performance, and some times even outshines the 60D in pure detail resolving power, however, the image you're showing shows a huge difference in detail between the Z2 and the 60D where the Z2 is pretty awful in comparison.
would like to have seen you talk about macro shots and using manual focus. that is my biggest reason for wanting a camera. i am a vaper and want something for close up pictures of coils and what not as well as other stuff
Sadly, the phone lost on both counts. It's video footage is totally useless and unusable as it keeps stuttering all the time. Watch the cars going by. You could never have that crap going on for anything serious. I have a feeling my Galaxy S5 does the same (I never shoot video, but I tried it once when I first bought the phone).
I found this video very interesting, I actually own a cannon 60D and various lenses, they are two worlds apart. However I was looking at the Panasonic GH4 and the Fujifilm X100S as option to replace the Cannon 60D and this video makes me think that I might as well upgrade my phone before doing anything else and find that I need nothing else. Finally 2 things came to mind, one is that the best camera is always the one that you have with you and your mobile phone will always be with me. The second is what the chairman of HTC said about the mobile cameras getting as good as DSLRs, this video is touching the subject, well done, more like this should be made.
Surprised how good camera phones are today of course a 60d or any other mid level DSLR takes the cake but not as much as I thought it would who knows maybe in 2-3 years smart phones could replace the low to mid level DSLR
Amazing video I like how you explain things and I subscribed right the way...although you could have pretty much the same result even if the Z2 was against the 1100D on the photo test is always nice to see a camera phone busted by a dslr! The difference with low iso is almost embarrassing, wow! I have to be honest though, when you talked about the supposedly sharper images on the Z2 (at 7:00), either you inverted the description or man the 60D looks much much better in details. To my eyes that wall you shoot is sharp and nice on the 60D and you can see more details on the 60D while is blurry and with an amazing loss of details on the Z2! I'm a Nikon guy so I'm not saying this 'cause I'm a Canon fanboy, simply the Z2 quality can be compared to p&s and is better than other phones, but a dslr is still a dslr! About the video quality, no question here, the Z2 quality is outstanding and you can see much more details, but still I see something much better on the Canon: the autofocusing system! Canon is leader in video quality on dslr and it shows. Maybe is just me but on the Z2 I saw some kind of "hiccups" while panning, nothing major, but the Canon change focus point on the video much more smoothly. I don't shoot vide, but Canon is still the best camera to shoot video for a number of reason, I think even better than Nikon in my opinion, even without 4k! Last thing, your cat is beautiful!
Nice video..but kind of unfair to compare a dedicated dslr camera to a smartphone that has a nice camera on it. It would make more sense to compare the z2 with a mid range point and shoot digital camera.
Thank you for your video! I had a question based off of the video: I noticed the color reproduction was not quite as good with the Z2 as it is with the canon. I was wondering if there is a setting to provide more warmth to give life to the photos? Thanks!
Nice video, I use the Z2 for video shooting, and my Sigma DP2 for just taking pics. Higher resolution is just that, higher in resolution, which doesn't necessarily translate into good pics. I've seen much lower resolution cameras take better looking pics, so it's a bit of a pity.
are you using manual? or superior auto? coz superior auto sucks.. and you have to adjust the settings for best shooting mode such as ISO and Ev.. also depending on scenes..
the camera made for photographer ! and the phone for calling then start to improve improve until it get a camera the sensor of the camera is bigger as we see but i really like what the Z2 show in this video
Were you shooting with the z in superior auto or with white balance set to auto. That always possess problems with colour reproduction in daylight conditions.
Great video! Please compare camera Oppo find 7 with other devices, I'm thinking to buy this phone, and some info about camera quality will be much appreciated!
watching this on my xperia z2... :p nice review man phone camera's are no where close to the quality of dslr s, simply because the amount of light captured by dslr s is huge
I felt the Z2s video was really crisp and good, but the auto-focus was making me think of the sprint-bug in minecraft (constant zooming in and out). Can you turn of auto-focus when filming? Also: The video on the dslr might be less crisp because it isn't auto-focusing all the time.
FYI the 27 mb file size at 18 mpx from the 60D is uncompressed RAW picture format not JPEG. Otherwise an average JPEG photo would be around 7-8 mb... (Assuming that 22 mpx JPEG stills from my 5D mark III usually less than 10 mb) :P
This is a really useful video, thank you. I can't afford a DSLR and had tried to by the best camera-phone I could - seems like I made a good choice, which is reassuring
Thanks for interesting comparison! Last summer I went on holiday my Sony Xperia Z1 and a 'classical' heavyweigth camera. Hardly used the classic for the very obvious reason that is not mentioned in the test: I had my Sony with me everywhere! But when I og photographing I will of coures still use the old gadet - rigging up tripods, mounting filters, tuning exposure etc. But for taking pictures: My Sony! So this comparisons are like asking: is a boat better than a bike?
Dear majid anyhow you have came to the view that z2 is better than cannon dslr but according to you there are some hinches in z2 when taking the stills so just wanted to let u know know that if u attach Sony dslr lense to z2 it will give u much more better results
Hi!!! Waj Syed, Can you give a camera review for NOKIA LUMIA 1020 with SONY Z2!!!!! I heard both are good ones so i'm a little bit confused which suits for me.
I still don't know how to get info about the focal length and the aperture used when I take videos, I know the sensor size but it's 1/2.3 and I don't know what does it mean in millimeters, can help?
kudos to Sony, amazing is what this phone is, against a DSLR from Cannon and still beats it in detail in well lit conditions, plus video and slow motion. Fantastic review Majid
yes if you got z2 which is 14w20 below.. that indicates the manufactured date.. overheating is just a term, but it's a safety feature to close the app and cooldown to make sure no hardware damage.. have you seen samsung s5 permanent disabled camera upon camera error? that's worst than overheating.. google it if you haven't heard..
low noise at low light and dynamic range is the most important things in a pro cam. small sensor in any phone camera limits these. in a shady day with plenty of light, the xperia z2 is great btw
And also sensor size for depth of field is one major necessity, more so for stills. Cameras that don't have that can only really be used for snapshots at tourist attractions.
Dude I love you (obviously no homo) Thanks for this comparison. So helping me make decision for z2. Been disillusioned by camcorders and DSLRs. Now wanna get z2. Also good to know good reason to get 4k ready TV for purposes like this video
Tbh I don't see much difference in the 4k video, I think its pretty cool how a phone can compare to a dslr, but it doesn't beat it at all, can you do long or short exposure photo's? Depth of field for cinematic looks? Sharp interchangeable lenses like fisheyes? Can you manually adjust shutter speeds etc to get the exact sharpness you need? Does it take quality photos in low light? Obviously not comparable.
I have the Z2 , the low light performance in video shooting is really bad due to small sensor size , my friends never compare a dslr with a smartphone in terms of capturing photos and videos , for example it's impossible that a phone which costs 500 dollars for everything in it wins out of a 500 dollars dslr that just can capture photo and video if phones could surpass pro cameras , nobody bought any dslr anymore and 4k video capability is just a fascinating advertising technique
How does Samsung Galaxy S5 fare when compared to the DSLR? Of course, I figure that it might not do so well just from the fact that you chose not even to try such a video..
Still using the z2, still alive. Best phone i have ever had.
DSLR is no doubt great but sony has done a commendable job as a smartphone camera.
To those who are whining and saying we can't compare a phone to a DSLR because a DSLR is better, I think you are missing the point. true.. atleast z2 made it close to DSLR and some android devices which are not over saturated
This was the most professionally made DSRL vs cameraphone comparision what I have seen! :) Very nice job!
About the sharpness of the video shot on the Canon 60D; use an actual canon lens, zoom in on the screen to make sure you are in focus, and you can also change the; sharpness, contrast, saturation, color tone, and make a custom white balance rather then running your camera on auto. it's not the lens. The 60D has underwhelming sharpness due to Canons downsampling algorithm. They greatly improved on this in the 5D mark III
Wow sony Z2's video quality is so good and the 120fps slo-mo is awesome. I'll go with sony coz it's a phone , computer, slow mo camera ,4k camera and it's gonna be with u anywhere u go.
I still use the 60d and is still awesome!
Thumbs up! for the Sony Z2 video camera.. really impressive, with sharper resolution, natural colors and amazing slow motion.
at last a proper smartphone vs dslr comparison!especially when you crop and zoom and in low light the dslr is untouchable!nice video!
fantastic video grt to see camera phones catching up...crazy times we live in..
I personally think that the fact we're at a point of comparing a smartphone camera against a dedicated DSLR is pretty astounding! Also, it was pretty clear in some of those photos and videos that the Z2 was doing a BETTER JOB than the Canon!

Amen! 😎🙌🙏
Lol smart phones don't even come close

Angie Holden well good luck then. i hope u can make phone call or playing game or text a whatsapp with your DSLR camera...

Quick point u probably know. QX 10 and QX 100 NFC lenses are available for this phone too. Would be nice to square these up too
Your the best in comparisons !!! Great video!
your videos are so much better then any other.......You ROCK..
great comparison....one of the best ever saw in youtube...keep it up...

Very good comparaison video. It is professional work. Thumb up, and Thank.
Just what I was looking for! Thanks for so detailed review.
Very deep and detailed comparison in terms of the technology. . Good.
awesome vid man! why dont you have more subs?
the best comparison ever ever evr...thank you buddy......great video MAN!!! superb
By the way the audio quality of your video is great. If you don't mind then please share what are you using for the audio.
Great honest review.
My take on all of that:
Smartphone cameras are really amazing in daylight. I think I can snap a photo with my Xperia Z and DSLR and most people wouldn't be able to tell a difference. Picture Quality: Canon 60D
Video Quality: Xperia Z2
If your doing a regular video maybe but the 60d looked like a movie the phone liked like a camcorder
Sadly, the phone lost on both counts. It's video footage is totally useless and unusable as it keeps stuttering all the time. Watch the cars going by. Nice video..but kind of unfair to compare a dedicated dslr camera to a smartphone that has a nice camera on it. It would make more sense to compare the z2 with a mid range point and shoot digital camera.
Awsome video, very informative, and that Cat is just as awsome :)
Great indepth comparison, thanks so much.
Hello do you have any problems with the temperature while you're filming oder taking pictures? I heard that problem came out with Android 5.1.
Did you only use the stock camera app while shooting or did you try others e.g. Google Camera? Which mode were you on? Majid Syed
Thank you for your video! I had a question based off of the video:
I noticed the color reproduction was not quite as good with the Z2 as it is with the canon. I was wondering if there is a setting to provide more warmth to give life to the photos? Thanks!
Would like to see that same comparison but with the qx100 attached to the z2! Can you do that?
I've never seen the youtube quality go so high... I think im crying (because of my terrible internet)
very good review indeed, professional in it's true colours.
Interesting vid!!
Anyway how we can maximize z2 camera, I mean fixing/larger the sensor so can match dslr? Any gadgets suit?
Thanks. I am so amateur
Nice video, I use the Z2 for video shooting, and my Sigma DP2 for just taking pics. Higher resolution is just that, higher in resolution, which doesn't necessarily translate into good pics. I've seen much lower resolution cameras take better looking pics, so it's a bit of a pity.
are you using manual? or superior auto? coz superior auto sucks.. and you have to adjust the settings for best shooting mode such as ISO and Ev.. also depending on scenes..
sigma dp2 has horrible quality in high iso
the camera made for photographer ! and the phone for calling then start to improve improve until it get a camera the sensor of the camera is bigger as we see but i really like what the Z2 show in this video
Y u
powerful sony camera! but how about the low light condition?
Were you shooting with the z in superior auto or with white balance set to auto. That always possess problems with colour reproduction in daylight conditions.
Great video! Please compare camera Oppo find 7 with other devices, I'm thinking to buy this phone, and some info about camera quality will be much appreciated!
watching this on my xperia z2... :p
nice review man
phone camera's are no where close to the quality of dslr s, simply because the amount of light captured by dslr s is huge
I felt the Z2s video was really crisp and good, but the auto-focus was making me think of the sprint-bug in minecraft (constant zooming in and out). Can you turn of auto-focus when filming? Also: The video on the dslr might be less crisp because it isn't auto-focusing all the time.
what they can do with technology these days is amazing, Sony cameras on the phones are just great wow
Did you use superior auto mode or manual mode for capturing images ???
Very useful video. Thanks for sharing it.
Hello! Really cool video, could you make a comparison between the Canon EOS 60D and Rebel T5i? Thank you!! :)

How much FPS takes on the Z2 ?
120
Xperia Z2 can flim in 60 fps!!! you can check it on video settings ;)
so...? the Iphone 6 can shoot 270 frames!
yeah IPhone can also bent jajaja
Miguel Marramarco its 240 fps
Miguel Marramarco what's the resolution at which iPhone can shoot those high fps?
HelliOnurb its 720p@ 240fps
This is a really useful video, thank you. I can't afford a DSLR and had tried to by the best camera-phone I could - seems like I made a good choice, which is reassuring
Why does Sony does not include the IR blaster as in many phones with which we can operate any remote controlled electronic device
What about with Magic Lantern on the Canon?
Dear majid anyhow you have came to the view that z2 is better than cannon dslr but according to you there are some hinches in z2 when taking the stills so just wanted to let u know know that if u attach Sony dslr lense to z2 it will give u much more better results
Great Video !!!!!.. Really Thumbs up... Can u please Upload a Comparison Video of Sony Z2 and Apple 5S ??
Hi!!! Waj Syed, Can you give a camera review for NOKIA LUMIA 1020 with SONY Z2!!!!! I heard both are good ones so i'm a little bit confused which suits for me.
Thank you for making this comparison. Now what about a full frame camera like 6D just for the sake of curiosity.
Just amazing how such a small camera and sensor can really hold up to some higher end $1500 cameras.
I still don't know how to get info about the focal length and the aperture used when I take videos, I know the sensor size but it's 1/2.3 and I don't know what does it mean in millimeters, can help?
And what about canon L lenses? :*
did you use tri pod while shooting the video in dslr??
Omg z2 has such a awesome camera??
kudos to Sony, amazing is what this phone is, against a DSLR from Cannon and still beats it in detail in well lit conditions, plus video and slow motion. Fantastic review Majid
Nice vid bro. Keep it up :)
A camera phone is competitive enough to make a dslr turn sweaty is a big thing to consider the sophistication with which xperia z2 is made
A camera phone doesn't even come close unless you just shoot a dslr in auto mode and even than the difference is n8kon and day
where r u from?
nyc work on vdeo man..liked the vdeo..
the camera overheats? Z2
yes if you got z2 which is 14w20 below.. that indicates the manufactured date.. overheating is just a term, but it's a safety feature to close the app and cooldown to make sure no hardware damage.. have you seen samsung s5 permanent disabled camera upon camera error? that's worst than overheating.. google it if you haven't heard..
Do a comparison between galaxy s5 vs canon 60D ..pls
Majid sayed, awesome effort and nice vedio.
WOW pretty awesome video keep it up pro :D
very interesting video. I would like too see a video on how too get the best form the Xperia Z's camera phone.

really very well made out ...very informative :)
bro. i want 2 make a full lenth cinema with sony z2. is it possible? give me tips. witch lens we need?
low noise at low light and dynamic range is the most important things in a pro cam. small sensor in any phone camera limits these. in a shady day with plenty of light, the xperia z2 is great btw
And also sensor size for depth of field is one major necessity, more so for stills. Cameras that don't have that can only really be used for snapshots at tourist attractions.
Thanks so much. It was really helpful :)
u should try to compare using the superior auto mode as a add in. sony z2 image is always better in that mode.
wrong.. it's better on manual mode if you know how to tweak it.. i've already done it several times
Dude I love you (obviously no homo) Thanks for this comparison. So helping me make decision for z2. Been disillusioned by camcorders and DSLRs. Now wanna get z2. Also good to know good reason to get 4k ready TV for purposes like this video
Informative video, thank you
could you do a xperia z1 vs z2 camera test?
Tbh I don't see much difference in the 4k video, I think its pretty cool how a phone can compare to a dslr, but it doesn't beat it at all, can you do long or short exposure photo's? Depth of field for cinematic looks? Sharp interchangeable lenses like fisheyes? Can you manually adjust shutter speeds etc to get the exact sharpness you need? Does it take quality photos in low light? Obviously not comparable.
I have the Z2 , the low light performance in video shooting is really bad due to small sensor size , my friends never compare a dslr with a smartphone in terms of capturing photos and videos , for example it's impossible that a phone which costs 500 dollars for everything in it wins out of a 500 dollars dslr that just can capture photo and video
if phones could surpass pro cameras , nobody bought any dslr anymore
and 4k video capability is just a fascinating advertising technique
How does Samsung Galaxy S5 fare when compared to the DSLR? Of course, I figure that it might not do so well just from the fact that you chose not even to try such a video..
Nice review..
what camera you use to shot this video?
in what format do u render the videos?
Osthir hoise Bro. :)
