LP Rawhide vs Remo Fiberskyn vs Manito Steer Head

  • I've always been curious on the "major" differences between all the heads that are offered when it comes to congas. I happen to own a few different options...
    The "stock" Hand Picked option that LP has to offer is probably the one I am most familiar with... The infamous Remo FiberSkyn 3 option which to many is considered the best sounding and most preferred when it comes to Synthetic heads... And a very well known Manito Percussion Steer Skin head... I have played on Steer, and Mule and even Goat... Just never on my LP Palladium Congas and to be Honest the sound changed how much my Congas normally sound. Love at First sight... or hit in this case haha
    In my opinion, each head has its advantages and disadvantages... It really depends on your need and your environment when it comes to choosing what type of head you should play on... Although I prefer Rawhide, players that only play on synthetic have their reasons which should always be respected. Doesn't make them less of a player or more of a player.
    It's not the Head... It's the Player!

      A Percussion Life thanks ... ok. for me. the LP skin sound warm and very well tone balance.
      the manito skin sound really good... well balance. high and lows are good. the Reno is nice but very bright....
      I like the LP skin. 👍👍

      You should have compared the thickness of the skins. A thicker skin will “cut” some highs and overtones and give a rounder or warmer sound. LPs are known to be thin and dry from swimming for an extended time in a water bath. I’ve got some old school L&H heads that are the bees knees. I replaced LP on my quinto but left it on the tumba so it rings longer and easier than having to hit some power stroke on a thicker, more hefty steer skin.
      I think your style of play will benefit with the manolito. It should sit nicer when playing melodically and not crossover some frequencies with your other tumbadoras.

    Looks to me like the LP is probably broken in as opposed to the Manito skin as you said you just got it but wait until you put some sweat into it, you will hear a totally different sound, much warmer, dry' and talkative. On this video, to me the LP sounds better; the Remo, although a great synthetic head needs more tweaking when tuning and to me it takes a bit of adjustment on your hands to make it sound how you want it. just my take on it, thanks for posting.

    The LP seems a bit more responsive, but the tone of the Manito is incredible.

    I used to play outside festivals a lot and synthetic heads were a must. They produce a lot of overtone sadly. What I found discussing with other percussionnists was that you can give them a light sanding to scratch the surface a tiny bit and then apply paraffine (Candle wax). It gives a little tickness to the skin and make them feel and sound a bit more natural. Cuts the overtones too.

    LOve the Manito! Full, round, resonant, pleasant floral overtones, with plenty of spanky highs and good bass. The Remo is interesting. very bright with great overtones but lacks the depth and bass. LP was ok. This from a noob who knows little to nothing about percussion. Thanks Eric! BTW what thickness was the Manito?

    Hey Eric, the LP seems to appeal to me more so than Manito. Manito has a solid sound. Yet the LP skin sound Bronx 1965 street corner, Crotona park and in front of a 3rd Ave. Tenant building. I can almost hear the El train roaring above the drummers. Yeah!

    Eric, the LP skins sound the best (sweeter & tighter tone). The Fiberskyn not bad but has noticeable ring as having reverb. The steer head is warmer than the LP head. It's just a personal preference. I know the Fiberskyn is easier on the hands. Thanks for sharing.

      I think the standard rawhide l.p. is the best for the money.
      Remo lacks a certain
      "Soul' big full loud but...
      Your money honey head sounds wonderful but you are oversold on it
      Really the edge goes to standard l.p. rawhide .. For me is it
      Remo when a Poncho Sanchez blows sounds great...But he is Poncho Sanchez
      Pedrito makes L.p. sound tremendous
      Truly its the player not the head w a slight edge to natural
      The standard is fine
      Work on your touch and technique
      In Havana
      The old poor Caja player sounds great
      It is the drummer

    From this video I'd say the LP has an undeniable classic sound that works well with that drum, the synthetic has more harmonic overtones but might be perfect for playing in a larger ensemble in a live situation for projection and maybe apparent volume, and the steer is the best all round for tonality ( sounds very very full ) . Hearing it at the lower pitch here doesn't quite allow us to hear what it does at a higher pitch like the LP head tuning.

    Awe man I already knew what day it was and was all set for my tutorial but good comparison video TBH the Manitos looked best but LP might have sounded a teeny tiny bit better but I would sacrifice that for that look on my set of congas. I'm pretty new at congas and I have hand-picked on my original 1970s LP fiberglass congas... So I'm used to the hand-picked sound... Sounds like authentic old school mambo on the beach....The remo head has sound clean and crisp... like if I was going to record a song.... .but that dark skinned head makes me feel like I'm sitting next to a fireplace with a glass of wine, and a pretty lady... (romantic and delicious)

  • @fabricioaleman3819
    @fabricioaleman3819 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very nice comparison! I personally use synthetic head simply because of how much easier they are on your hands and because of how long they stay tuned. But the overtones are a huge con and they will never sound like a real skin head.
    The manito was my favorite, the lower tone sounds much better on a conga for me.
    Keep up the awesome work, you make us Salvadoreños proud!

    • @APercussionLife

      Man... that's the Huge advantage of synth heads man... but yea the overtones have always been a deal breaker for me... I still switch to synth depending on where I'm playing (outdoors for example)...
      And thanks man! I try to represent us everywhere I go!

    Yeah, the Manito head sounds warmer and fuller. But Remo sounds more smooth and I like the slap tone. LP sounds bright and uncompromise but I've get used to it with the sound for a long time. My choice goes to REMO.

    @SkralO 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    LP and Manito-heads sound amazing in their own way! Manito has this dark feel to it, slap is sharp as hell. And the LP has this clear, kind of youthful feel in the sound...both are awesome!

  • @LucasSantana-vc6ct

    This is awesome thank you for the video! I have a few question and or suggestions. Are the skins tuned up to the same note? It doesn’t sound as if they are. Probably you can load a video with each skins tuned to the same key. The LP sounds really good crisp and the tone is clear. The fiberskyne has to much ring. The Manito looks cool but I cannot make a proper assessment on the sounds since it seems as if it is tuned lower. I personally use TB skins from Colombia Tambores Baranquilla I can send you a demo through messenger.

    Manito's got great heads. Lp calfskins are ok and get better as they break-in. Never cared much for fiberskyns, however they have their place. Have you tried any skyndeep heads? Don't have them where I live. Thanks for the comparison Bro!

    I bought the fiberskyns to replace LP rawhides (water buffalo) and while I was happy with not having to retune, I hated the overtones/ring, and that excess overtone is evident on this video. I switched back to the LP heads and just ordered 3 Manito steer heads. Can’t wait to get them in less than a week!

    The Manito head did it for me. Have been curious regarding the synthetics but now I know I would not bother. I understand the benefits of Mylar as I am a kit player as well but i I truly believe congas need their natural skins to feel and sound right. It's like pizza in a cup - it's a reasonable facsimile but just not the same... Really appreciating your channel Eric. Please keep sharing all this great stuff. Gotta love it!

    Manito's steer skin is the mellow tone that captured the drum's tonal qualities and, presumably, it has yet to even be "broken in" yet when the sound and slap will open up even more! I've had Manito's skins on mind for my fiber glass drums but because of the nature of fiberglass I'm thinking of even possibly Mule over Steer. I've purchased from various suppliers over time but have yet to buy from Manito.

From your video the synthetic does not have the tone, warmth, or depth of sound that the natural skins have. The Manito sounds awesome too me on your drum, and so does the LP. So, now I have to decide on which natural head. Hmmmmm......... Thanks for the video and many blessings to you!

    A good horn player can make even cheap horns sound great. The same could be said here. But I think I like the LP for its tone and the Manito for the slap that sounds like you're chopin wood. Just like it should! But I also like it's tone tho it sounded like it was tuned lower. The Remo still sounds good but the tone sounds a little thin compared to the others. Great video. I'm also trying to decide which to get for my Matador conga where I have sensitive hands that got messed up playing in groups that wanted to drown me out. So might have to go with Remo.

    Hey, Eric...I'm a bass player who plays AT everything else. I built up a nice set of hand drums back in the day initially so we could show my drummer the basic patterns we wanted when writing a song. He was tone deaf and could figure out the parts quicker visually than auditorially. The set is currently the original Cosmic Percussion conga and quinto, an LP Aspire tumba, a pair of Meinl conguitas, and a pair of LP bongos on a stand. Some of these drums are more than twenty five years old and all still have the factory heads on them. I'm putting together a home studio and would want these available for a competent conguero to use. All of the heads are old except the Meinls. Would finerskyn heads be a good idea for studio use?

    A tip for using synthetic heads on congas.Try rubbing a small amount of pure West African Shea butter on your hands and into the synthetic head before you play My experience is that it gives the head a little warmer sound,less ring Also,it gives the smooth some texture and grip like a real skin would have.Best thing about synthetic heads,less wear and tear on your drum hardware from the constant tuning up and down that some musicians put on congas with real skin.

    They all sound fantastic when being used by someone who knows how to play, but my observation listening on noise canceling headphones, the lp sounds great, the fiberskyn3, which is what I have on my 14" dejembe, has a hint of the dreaded "remo ring" just as mine does, but that last one the cowhide or whatever ooh baby that's sweet sweet money and beautiful just screams quality. If you really want to hear the subtle differences put on a pair of decent headphones

    Hello and Greetings from Germany!
    To be honest it s not really possible to hear the Full Range and Sound of the Congas and Skins on a youtube video.
    But considering this its very well recorded and played!!
    For me the manito sounds best! It sounds more like "Cuban flavour" :)
    Or like Armando (Peraza) would say"...am i right...?

      You're absolutely... I believe you can't really appreciate the difference unless it was in person... But yea it gives a more "authentic" sound.

    Great video thanks!!! I love the manito skin, It’s awesome! I currently use LP rawhide and I love it. I definitely going to purchase a manito skin, what’s Skin thickness is the one you using? Extra thick 2mm - 2.5mm? Thick 1.6mm - 2mm?

That was a great Test of the skins the crazy thing is the 1st LP skin sounded really really good the 2nd one kind of sounded a little twiny but it's still killer and that last skin that you put on the dark 1 that was badd a** love the color anyway I'm gonna keep looking out for you my bro from the high desert California RayRay

    Ain’t being a creep but man,you make all of them sound good! The rawhide is definitely warmer IMO but that Manito head is something else! The slaps really stand out on that skin!
    But I’m gonna be stealing all your riffs though....... tasty! thanks!

    Nice to listen and compare....I think I have to agree with you as the tone of the steer head has such depth. The other two were good too and the fibreskyn had an interesting dry kind of sound to it. Was the LP one buffalo?

  • @JimmyFontanez
    @JimmyFontanez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oddly enough, I like the sound of the LP. Maybe it’s because the heads are made for the drum. I like the way it resonates.

    I'm new to Congas, but that steer head sound amazing. Does steer head have the same issues with humidity and having to tune it all the time in weather changes like cowskin? I have old school Matadors and am trying to decide between Nuskyn and Steer Head conga heads. Great videos your teaching me a ton!

    • @APercussionLife
      @APercussionLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! A Steer Skin is a Raw Hide head... SO it is treated as such... so same effect with weather and having to tune it all the time as weather changes. That is a major advantage Remo heads have.

    • @AceeSoul
      @AceeSoul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you recommend Skyndeep or Nuskyn? I'm looking for less ring since this will be in studio only.

    • @APercussionLife
      @APercussionLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acee Soul well just FYI you’re going to get “ring” with both... but NuSkyn is the closest to sounding like “Rawhide”... but the feel of the skin isn’t comparable to Skyndeep... Skyndeep is the “in-between” of Fiberskyn and NuSkyn... so you’re getting a more diverse head... but it really falls on your usage. Since it’s for studio work.

    Hard to really tell since the LP skin is cranked so much higher than the manito, but the natural tones of the manito head to me are much nicer.. even though tuned lower. The fiberskin.. well it sounds like a fiberskin. Nice demo!

    Eric have headphones on to get better tone & I prefer the LP head waaaay more may be nuts to you but it goes with my LP Giovanni galaxy congas so that is what I go for. The steer heads sound great on your congas but mine are different than what you have!!! As for the Luis Conte congas that I will get later I know prefer the Buffalo rawhide heads on them!!!

    An important factor is how your drums sound,miked or unmiked,with your band.In small rooms with electric bands,congas are not necessarily miked.The way your hand technique projects,or doesn't project,is a critical factor.Also,if you play outdoor or open air venues near a beach front, it's difficult to keep any skin conga heads in tune throughout a 3 to 4 hour gig.

  • @Fantastic_Timez
    @Fantastic_Timez 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I prefer the sound of rawhide but I actually have Fiberskyn heads. Not having to re-tune everything every hour because of the weather is so good!

    My ears are bleeding, listening to that Remo skin. So much ringing...The LP head is quite acceptable, but the Steer one is, to my taste, candy for the ear. Of course, it is all a matter of taste, and you are right, the skin in only part of the sound.
    I really enjoy your videos. Well done!

    Manito´s sound so much fuller, richesr. They ring in a very pleasant way, not too much and not dry at all (compared to the LP that to my taste is way too dry!) fantastic heads!! I wish I´d live in the US to get them! Saludos Eric

    Please could you tell me where cam I get it the MANITO STER HEAD SKINS.
    Could you send me a link where I will contact the company or distributor.
    The remo synthetic head ski s are good because keeps tuning at any temperature, specifically on winter.
    But the MANITO HEAD SKINS ,SOUND IT'S .MORE BODY RESONANCE,PRESENCE ,SOUND IT'S MORE SIMILAR AND ORIGINAL OF RAWHIDE HEAD SKIN.
    Thanks so much before hand.
    CHEERS!
    Thanks so much before hand.

    Muchas gracias por el video me parece muy informativo, yo no soy músico y apenas voy en mi tercera semana de práctica con las congas, te platico que me cuesta mucho identificar los sonidos diferentes que se pueden ejecutar con las congas ( no se si uso el término correcto ) pero estoy poniendo todo mi empeño en aprender me encanta la música en general pero la cumbia salsa y cubana es otra cosa muy especial para mi, para mi gusto las manito están rebién, ahora estoy aprendiendo con las remo, más adelante tal ves tenga la oportunidad de adquirir un segundo set de congas y utilize unas manito me encantaron, saludos y que viva la rumba.

    I would say the Rawhide got first place more warmer and smooth I give themanito steer Head second place a bit louder but not as good sounding as the Rawhide skin and 3rd place to the Fiberskyn the sound however is brighter and louder but not as rich sounding.

    would help if all heads would been equally tuned. Of course the LP on high pitch will sound good, any does. A lower tune on the Manito also sounds great, any natural skin will. Matter of fact is, natural heads sounds better in studio environment, but has too low volume and no brightness on live performance. One can try to adjust it through the mixer board to find a lot of feedback, but is feasible. Also natural skins tend to forgive your mixed tone technique (or bad technique) so a beginner should go for it. Synthetic heads in other hand are lively and have more volume, but they produce a hell of harmonics and mixed up open/slap /massacote tones, which can pass for live performance but never for recording , so I place a tape around the edge like in a Bohdran which helps a bit. Conclusion is, it depends on what is your need, and also how is your hand shape - the less bony the better (like our friend in this video). For advanced level players I recommend a natural head set for studio and a synthetic head set for live - and please don't ever buy any non-tucked synthetic head for a quinto or requinto, it doen't last :) Thanks for the video, good job!

    I've played all of those heads and i still feel the same. Manito's skins are some of the best out there bar none. Those dark steer skins are amazing!! The remo skins are good too but they have their place. I'm cool w synth skins. I'm def not a prude like some ppl. I really don't like the hand picked skins lp uses at all. I don't like the feel either but I won't lie they really didn't sound bad at all man. Buuuuut Manito takes it!!

    Thx for this. Wish you did this two months ago when I was searching all over for replacement heads!! I also bought two steer skins from Manito. I only mounted one so far and love it. But I can't really say yet whether I like it better than the old Remo cowhide. I liked the brighter slap of the remo but I bet the Manito records and blends better. I think its the most musical head in your video too even though I also liked the other two. So I think I'm going to mount the Manito conga head this weekend and be 100% Manito. (I liked that it was Peruvian sourced too. My wife's Peruvian)
