I love that you recorded a physical comic rather than just using the still art itself, really creates an immersive feel like we're reading it. Awesome video!
I remember when I was a kid in like 07 or 08 and I got a megatron and optimus 2 pack based on their designs here and came with a war within comic, so nostalgic
I really like this new style you've got going here. War Within is a really underrated comic and it's a bit sad no one talks about it much when it comes discussing origin stories. It honestly did Data Clerk Optimus far better than the Aligned Continuity did. If they're doing Data Clerk Optimus in Transformers: One, this is how it should be done. I also like that while he may not be very upbeat, there's a certain snark to Optimus whenever in his dialogue that makes him really entertaining, he has a very "I'm tired and I can't be bothered with this" kind of vibe. I also like how they set up Cybertron's ancient history without giving too much in this story. It really gives the reader up to interpretation and leaves the room for either a Quintesson or Mythical backstory. While not my favorite origin story for the war, I think it's the best modernised "G1" esque backstory we've had. Also this comic really made me miss Don Fig as a artist, Hasbro and IDW did him so dirty.
I wonder if one day... Hasbro will have a line of comics that stretch from G1 to Earthspark, wrapping up storylines we'll never see. Galvatron building a better Cybertron in G1. Dreamwave Universe wrapping up. Animated Season 4, Bayverse Finale.
He has returned!! Loved watching this dive into the war within comic tbh, and it just goes as a testament that Simon furman still and always will be a true cornerstone for writing these characters and their stories, mans a absolute legend. Funny thing though, I actually did wonder why grimlock was so prominent in the story but it hit me again that Simon Furman is writing the story, so of course grimlock would be prominent (not in a bad way of course, love it when he’s a actual character with motives), great video though, you got me inspired to get back to work on my video I’m working on XD
7:38 I personally believe that if bots can be built for certain types of jobs then they can be rebuilt to fit different societal roles. We've seen from many different continuities that transformers can build different bodies for themselves like the Japanese Headmasters, and that they can readjust/relocate their brain modules like in the American Headmasters, and that they can do maintenance/reprogram entire brains like with the G1 constructions so I don't see why they couldn't make new bodies for themselves for this kinda stuff in this continuity.
@@RoadRustle But Cybertronians naturally have the ability to scan new alt modes in most continuities which does reformat their body. Personally I think the body building thing makes total sense but it's also partially bc if something goes unexplained but has an easy explanation and we know we'll never get the real answer, the obvious works but that's just me. I'm a lore nut so I like when everything has an explanation lol. But to each his own
I can agree that the Megatron in this comic is oddly evocative of Armada Megs despite clearly being a G1/G1-adjacent Megatron. I'm not sure what it is but I just have an easier time putting Kaye's voice to these drawings than I do Welker's.
It's super interesting to me how several of these character designs would be carried over into the earlier parts of IDW Grimlock, Ravage, Optimus, etc Good to see they didn't die with Dreamwave
Like you said, these comics were really influencial ! The art style is pretty weird and sometime a bit goofy but very energetic overall and reflect the Dreamwave Era pretty well. For a very first attempt at a story based on the war on Cybertron, it was pretty good ! It tried to be a serious and somewhat deep story, while also serving as a Optimus Prime origin story. It clearly tried to be its own thing and you must respect that, not to mention once again how influencial it was for modern Transformers stories.
I'm glad some of these designs got toys. Optimus, Megatron, Grimlock and Prowl via Titaniums and MAAStoys did Bumblebee. Wasn't until the end that i remembered that there was a Jetfire design which also had a Titaniums figure.
The real War Within was the friends we made along the way

Great video! I absolutely love Dreamwave's War Within comic. Don Figueroa is my absolute FAVORITE Transformers artist of all time.

I believe in some of the very earlier IDW05 comics (Stormbringer and the Spotlights) they directly used designs from this comic
