tbh, before i got more into transformers, this comic gaslit me into thinking that gears was a prominent character due to him being in issue 1's cover and his teamup with spider-man. I kinda wish he was tbh
Just remember, any Transformers media that doesn’t contain this particular crossover, which is to say everything since ‘84, is a *failed* adaptation of the source material. Lol
These comics are just wild ! It's hilarious but quite enjoyable to be honest, a true relic of the past that even non-transformers fan can understand even like. I actually really like the character of Punch, he's concept is cool !
I never noticed the color comparison with Gears and Spider-Man. As well as Gears being a reason for Spidy to reverse back to his old suit. Freaking Gears
Desperate situations desperate mesures. Optimus Prime going from a Kamikaze to a more calm, optimistic leader is a good arc... executed in a weird way.
it's a bit of a whiplash considering the character we know now, but yeah if we imagine Optimus as going from a general wanting to win to what we imagine him to be now, I think it's a very interesting story to follow.
One thing I really like about the original miniseries is how it did it's tone. Despite its goofy nature, there's an air of tension constantly around, as the first 12 issues or so constantly have our heroes at a disadvantage, whether it'd be them lacking power, numbers or energy. It really has high stakes and makes you worry for you characters, worrying whether or not they'll make it out alive.
SHOCKWAVE REIGNS SUPREME (I almost choked on water because I was wondering where Shockwave was and lo and behold he appeared and I knew he would scream and I had to hold back my laugh so I didn't Kms @_@ What an ending though 😭) He's so wide W i d e S h o c k w a v e
"And then SPIDERMAN shows up! 😀" The story moves so fast that even reading them in order the comics feel disjointed lol. First one I read was issue 5 (cause THAT cover was another level) and 3 cause Spiderman, and a few others, but old comics just have that weird magical quality from that time. I'm just shocked Cybertron was in Alpha Centauri lol Great video, love hearing you guys talk Transformers
The people putting together much of the first comics clearly treated it as a licensed toy advertisement, and put just that amount of effort in. There was no sense that Transformers would be a lasting brand, or that it's appeal would actually be to older kids. What always amused/frustrated me is that some of the art in those early issues are like the loose sketches you would do for an animatic when storyboarding scenes. And they just… went with it.
I think Optimus crashing the arc as like a plan he had all along is really fucked up. In the Marvel comic it works, because it's like a "Oh, we literally have no other option, I think this is the best we can do" "Alright, sir, it's been a honor fighting alongside you". If he planned this, I kinda question why he decided to have such a large crew, rather than maybe flying a ship himself with maybe some decoy bodies to fool Megatron.
He explains in Secrets and Lies that he needed it to be convincing as Ravage was supposed to "take the bait" so that he'd report back to Megatron and he would attack. 84 Secrets and Lies is an interesting story as a thought experiment, but you don't need to take it as canon to the OG Marvel story as it was written years later.
If I remember correctly, the bizarre roll calls when characters state their name and function was the result of an editorial mandate throughout Marvel. Its just far weirder when there's 30 characters doing it, rather than just one villain reminding Spiderman what his gimmick is.
Prime is not killing Autobots on the cover. Gears is shooting at Laserbeak in support of Prime. And that's not acid, it's pale sky with clouds in the background illustrating height. At the time this wasn't just a new comic coming out, it was an event complete with a TV commercial (G.I. Joe got that too) so everybody wanted it. The comic was good at first with the surprising desperation of the Autobots and the downer ending of issue 4. Unfortunately the comic would jump the shark somewhere in the double digits because it was beholden to supporting whatever new toy came next which steadily became more ridiculous once the Takara designs were no longer used and real-world objects were no longer represented.
Yeah I knew that Gears wasn't fighting Prime but I thought it was a funny and insignificant comment when it was made. On the second thing, I did say that it was a grassy landscape that Gears fell into about 3 seconds later. I felt the Marvel comic starts really strong goes into a weird middle then picks back up towards the end.
Im a HUGE G1 Transformers fan. I spent covid lockdown collecting every G1 Transformers Marvel Comic issue including the movie issues and the 4 Headmasters issues etc.
these first 4 are... 'uneven' is the kindest way to say it. The penciling is generally solid but the inks are all over the place and the artists obviously don't have enough references. Clearly no one knew what to do with the story. It gets a lot better when Bob Budiansky starts writing it. He seems like the only guy at Marvel at the time who understood the franchise.
@@ryanmatthews3609 how? If anything, the Korea war background for sparkplug makes him interesting and dramatic, which in line to the fact that transformers is a mech series, dramatic stuff really make character shine (if the writer can nail it, plus I'm a Gundam fan so probably my perspective might be biased)
Sooooo, Marvel Comics Prime: -had a secret plan to kamikazi himself and his troops to take out Megatron as a last resort. -rips his own head, which actually was a mind-control device from Shockwave, once his actual head got close by and released his body from the mind control. -killed himself after killing fictional NPCs in a video game. -was retconned to having planned the crashing of the Ark with himself and his troops in it from the start. -defeated the thrust by allowing it to consume him. -Rodimus Prime, who has the Creation Matrix with Prime's consciousness in it, contemplated letting Death's Head shoot him. Optimus, is there something you wish to tell us?
I just realized Optimus did a Henry Miller from FNAF and trapped the cons with himself in the crash. It's a room with no exit and a maze with no prize, except for death lol

Next time I see someone watching transformers movie imma ask "Where's Spider-Man?"
don’t forget about Nick Fury
In another universe, this would’ve been a part of the MCU.

I always thought that was JFK on the cover as well! I only realised as an adult that it's Sparkplug and Buster.
They are great, i own every single Transformers g1 Marvel comics
Great job! I read the series and it's mostly really cool.
26:27 my only complaint about it is the part where sparkplug mentions the korea war, budiansky should really rewrite that part.
Why?
