  • T.P. Sreenivasan is the Vice-Chairman and Executive Head of the Kerala State Higher Education Council with the rank of Vice-Chancellor. The Council has the mandate to advise the Government of Kerala on all matters pertaining to the Universities and other institutions of higher learning in Kerala. A former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Vienna and Governor for India of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna and Ambassador to Austria and Slovenia (2000-2004), T.P. Sreenivasan has served in the Indian Foreign Service for 37 years. Mr. Sreenivasan has nearly 20 years of experience in multilateral diplomacy and has represented India at a number of international conferences organised by the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Nonaligned Movement. He has chaired several UN Committees and Conferences. Mr. Sreenivasan is presently a member of the National Security Advisory Board of the Government of India, the Director General, Kerala International Centre and an Adviser to 'Asianet' and produces a weekly TV programme on international issues entitled 'Videsa Vicharam'.
    The talk is a clinical analysis of the Malayalee Mindset, which needs to be transformed to bring about economic and social change in Kerala. Individuality that militates against teamwork, lack of social graces, confinement of women to homes, insular nature despite global exposure, inadequate articulation, casteism, desire for leadership and public recognition, ritualistic public meetings, lack of civic sense, overdose of ideologies, the work culture, corruption, lust for land etc will come up. The conclusion is that it will be good if the mindset is transformed, but if it does not, the Malayalees must engage in areas that suit their genius.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    I actually agree with what he says. We can be so much more than what we are, if we were able to work on our attitude!

    I personally think the so said mindset of Malayali is making the change. The only way to realize the best part of it is to live in the social community. However, the conservative attitude towards women is a sad part compared to the globalized world. But, that indirectly fuels the family system and therefore gifting the society and the coming generation an example of quality living.

    I'm glad TED is doing these talks in India. But why must the lighting and the audio have be shoddy. More worrying why are the talks so insipid and dull. I've heard more insightful talks from listening to my watchman. This is just crude self-flagellation, ironically a malayalee past-time. He says nothing that anyone could use either to live better or to understand the world better.

    He does not know anything about kerala n keralites. He stayed in US for 40 years, leaving back his family and parents. Every word from his mouth is insulting the keralites. If we were so bad, why hell are we most literate, economically strong, high level standard of life, high life span, exporting best human resource from India. Pity on you man. And the best thing he has a Malayalam slang in his English.

      i wonder why you take it as an insult.. your narrow mindedness or do you think whether malayalis don't have that potential for further scope of development ??!!! don't always be taken away by positive testimonials ..we should also learn to constructively develop the mindset of accepting healthy criticisms. then only we can move still further.

    Such generalisations on an entire state which is so diverse in itself, simply portrays narrow mindedness.

    • @8089remo
      @8089remo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      your comment seems to be pointless as he have clearly mentioned towards the end that some of his points seems to be so exaggerated or "generalised some isolated tendencies". but the thing is that we are so individualistic which trigger us to raise statements like this . why don't we consider all these as our collective responsibility and find lucrative solutions to tackle them.

      It's a generalization that holds true, but it should be understood it does not apply to everyone.

      Sweta Reba The truth may hurt you but Every point he said were Facts. There can be progress only when faults are recognised & he was humble enough to put it out so lightly yet genuinely. Its high time you change your narrow mindset for the sake of good.

      Faisal abdul khader well,he just presented some of the points that describe an overall malayalis mindset.
      Now,the intention of his speech itself was to point out our weak areas. Which, I agree is not a " solution" as such,but such criticisms are the first step towards a more progressive society.
      Pointing out the mistakes dosent mean denying our good areas,it only means that we have to work on certain areas to move forward.
      My friend, I myself am a malayali.

    I have major respect for this fellow. So true, the only way to make Kerala and is to make the attitudes much better. We may be very "educated and literate", but we fail to open our minds to what the world has to offer and just confine ourselves within our own communities, hence making us insular by choice. Add to that, at times we look down upon those who are not part of "our community".
