The school for role-play in Denmark | DW Documentary

  • The chalk-and-talk approach is yesterday. Students at the Østerskov Efterskole in Hobro, Denmark, learn through role-play. 17-year-old Emma felt disadvantaged at a conventional school because of her dyslexia. She's hoping for a new start here.
    The Østerskov Efterskole is able to conduct experiments like this thanks partly to the Danish school system. Any time after the 8th grade, students have the option of attending a free school for a maximum of three years. Many of these have specialized teaching methods. The idea behind role-playing, according to the school concept, is that, once you've put theory into practice, it's committed to memory. So the students are learning for real life and not just for the next test. The results speak for themselves. Although many youngsters at the Østerskov Efterskole struggle with learning difficulties, about three quarters of them transfer to a school where they can qualify for university studies. At the very least, that brings them in line with average performance in Denmark. A report by Anna Marie Goretzki.

    My son is in one of these boarding schools, their focus is E-sport and game design, his interest. One of the first times he came home from the school, he told us he is finally learning things, it sticks with him if he can see the link between, programming with math, e-sports with tactics, leadership and teamwork. They teach all the normal subjects, but in the mindset that they have to use this to be able to do what they want to do. He is doing all 3 years, he does NOT want to go back to normal public school. He only comes home in the weekends, when he has to.

    My only concern is what happens when these kids go on in life and face unexpected issues - will some of them have an increased tendency in developing dissociative identity disorder in order to cope? Interesting approach nevertheless, just wondering about this particular aspect because DID often has an onset in an inability to cope with the reality at hand and ones social role in it, thus those affected develop alternative identities (i.e. roles)

      Let me answer you, as an adult Dane. This school is by no means special in Denmark. We have had this kind of residential schools for more than 150 years - they are a VERY integrated part of being Danish and growing up in Denmark...My kids went to such a school. So did I. So, way back, did my great great grandfather. The schools have been part of the process of creating democratic, adult citizen in my little kingdom. And dont worry - the kids will be fine. Very fine.

It generally helps. Especially for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It helps the student along in learning how to see the situation from the perspective of another student.

      My oldest daughter wich is now 18 attended such a school two years ago. Nothing wrong with her in fact most students at those schools are as you and me and most others.
      The reason I as a parent let her go there for a year was to have some good experiences and another way of social living. The school f.ex. only let them have their phone for 1 hour a day wich I can only appreciate. My daughters school was into arts and so the kids can choose between different focuses. They all learn what you would at a normal class in a community school the fun is extra. My daughter is so prepared when she leaves home one day.
      Some of the students have some issues and for them it is world changing to be together with other people at the same age 24/7.
      They all grow so much as adults in just one year that it is incredible.
      My younger daughter wich is now 14 will be going after the summer holiday. She will then be 15 and she to have no other reason than she is tired of school and this will help her with that. She is into dancing and will attend a school for dancing and music.
      It is not free. Parents have to pay in the order of 9000 - 1000 $ dollars but very low income families can get way most of it paid by the community.

      1) Every kid will still have to pass the same tests as every other Danish kid.
      2) Show me an American kid who speaks a second language as well as Emma.
      3) Almost half of all kids visit one of these free schools. THey would not do that, if they - and their parents - did not KNOW, how good the schools are for the kids and for society.

    • @migsvensurfing6310
      @migsvensurfing6310 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They will still have to read and write and everything else that a normal school will do. They will also have to pass all examens like any other. The advantage here is that these students chose role playing as an extra in their everyday. To make people more interrested in learning, present them with what they love to do. In addition they are together with others at there own age and interrest and learn social skills much faster. They live there 24/7 and only see there parents at weekends if they want to. No phones/social media to take away your focus most of the day/evening. It lets them grow very fast and most of them gain some friends for life in the process.

      It sure is, but it doesn't change the fact that we play different roles during our life - the strict boss might be a loving and caring mother/father when they're coming home from work.
      And in this case, it enhances these kids ability to see things from a different perspective than they're own - which makes them a lot better equipped for dealing with various situations throughout life...
      So basically, they're getting skills making them better at interacting with other people, and thus give them better opportunities in regards to get a stabile income and raise a family if that's what they want...

    • @dustsky
      @dustsky 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gorillaguerillaDK I see! In this case, maybe they should be playing scenarios that emulate real-life working environments behaviorwise if their final goal is to loosen up and free themselves from whatever behavioral limitations they have, because eventually, they have to be functional in society within its expected constraints. What I'm seeing here looks more like a bubble in which they can uninhibitedly be themselves; unfortunately, this is a far cry from what they'll encounter in the real world. Now, if this approach is only meant to aid them in learning various technical skills, that's all fine, no one cares as long as it gets the job done. But sure, I agree with your point!

      A lot of these people--myself included, go/went there because society failed them. Not all, mind you, but for a good portion of them, that was the case.
      Most of the students there were bullied when they were younger, often with teachers that didn't exactly help alleviate the situation. Some have even changed schools entirely multiple times to no avail.
      Sure, the learning is done through fun and games (a thing which actually works!), but the social circles that form during those games--and during extracurricular activities help students get a footing in society where they otherwise might not have had any, and help them for years afterwards.
