And what about women and their view of men? When are we going to talk about this newfangled nonsense going around in the media and social media that men and their masculinity are "toxic" by nature, hence so-called "toxic masculinity"? Let's discuss that lie, shall we...?

@@venlapallari9484 You want to talk about "traditional cultural norms", specifically in western society? Let's talk about the idea that women have certain expectations of men, and certain standards men need to meet in order for women to deem them acceptable, tall, handsome, fit, high paying career, fancy car etc. And there is certainly no harm in women setting standards. But when men have certain expectations and set specific standards for they want in a woman, slim, fit, pretty, sexy, easy to get along with etc.,, out come the cries of "Misogyny!" and "Sexism!" and the "You should accept a woman as she is and at any size because all women are beautiful!" and other such foolishness. And everyone joins in the pile-on, because how DARE a man have certain expectations in a woman? Double standards...yuck.

Following "body positive", plus size, and fitness models are the same problem as following thinspo. You are still putting all your mental energy and self-value into your BODY. Don't put your self-value in your body. Period. You have a body, it doesn't matter how it looks. Be balanced, healthy, and enjoy what you love. If you love fitness and it's your job or whatever, then fine. But don't do it to LOOK good, do it because you love it. Don't put all your self-worth into your body is what I think the solution is.

    • @EyeNoMrGREEN
      @EyeNoMrGREEN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +199

I agree to an extent, but I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to look good. It is when things become an obsession and damage your mental health that it becomes a problem. That can happen with anything though not just body image. If you think of your self as very scholarly you can put all your self-worth into your grades and your degree, which can lead to just as many problems with stress or perhaps turning to stimulant drugs to study more. The solution is not to stop trying to get good grades or to stop trying to look good it is to have a balanced, healthy life with a reasonable outlook and to love yourself regardless of the results.

Well said and true, but also the inverse is true as well, because social media now sets the tracking of "cultural/social capital", which is required for creating opportunity in the "capital" capital worlds of many industries. Social media has flattened things like Hollywood and made youtube and tiktok the platforms for being free agents of content creation and distribution. going from 0 to 1 to launch your brand or company has never been easier. whatever the negatives, we can't let that sink the entire ship.

I was with until you wrote your conclusion lol. That’s an absolutely useless solution. Women biologically are judged on their looks so it’s pretty logical that they often have to keep up with social norms of what’s considered beautiful. So a better solution would be to unfollow beauty bloggers, focus on your health (fitness, nutrition), do what you love and the beauty & confidence will come from within.

"ANYONE IMPORTANT is gonna be on your contact list or someone you talk to in person" to be fair, nowadays you can quite easily go quite some time without interacting with anyone (with possibly co-workers/other students as exceptions). - Says a girl who takes part in fitness modeling competitions and shares it all on social media.
I am not saying she is a bad human being, but she is either lying or totally unaware of herself.
Taking part in competition is the ultimate way of comparing yourself to others and living an active life on social media does not support your statement either.

I'm a guy and I even have body image issues. Until 21 I had bad acne, at 22 I noticed that my hair was falling out and I would be extremely careful not to look down because it would show my balding spot. I had gynecomastia (man boobs) until 27, and walked with my shoulders rolled forward to make them less noticeable and always wore jacket even in hot weather to hide them. I actually believed that girls wouldn't want me because I had to have perfect pecs and defined abs. I still have wider hips than normal men and wonder if any girl would want me. Most guys won't open up about their insecurities because society demands men to be a "tough guy" and punishes those who show even a little emotion. I think social media/media in general has the potential to harm men as well as women's self esteem and their self image. We are all humans and experience the same things so we should not separate men and women. Men should also be encouraged to open up, even though its harder for them, it is much better for their sanity and mental health in the long run. Insecurities are insecurities and we should help each other to overcome them, regardless of gender.

Whoever you are, know that you have value and are loved. Even people that don't know you care about you. Many of us know your pain. Society won't change over night, so don't let yourself get dragged down. Be hopeful for a better future.

Difficult is to live life. And why should image be easy too? Everything meaningful is hard in life, but image is one of those things that if neglected wont harm objective life aspects, such as income, building a family and/or health. If ur ugly u still can live, and that's that!
Disclaimer: If u are fat ugly, then yes, its bad for your health too

I know it would sound clićhed but beauty comes in different shapes, sizes and skin tones. This is not to shade celebrities but if they were as confident and comfortable with their looks as they claimed and seemed to be, they wouldn't be having rhinoplasty and botox among other procedures. Even they don't look like the ideal we're all told to chase in order to be considered beautiful. You don't need to have a straight dainty nose to be beautiful. You don't need to have high cheekbones to be beautiful. You don't need to have big lips to be beautiful. You don't need to be light skinned to be beautiful. Your facial features are unique to you and they add a balance to your face that you cannot otherwise achieve. Don't ruin your individuality to become like everybody else. Later in life you'll realize that the only thing that truly matters is health. Take care of your body. Don't punish it and treat it like an enemy. If you do, it'll react likewise and start giving you health issues. Be grateful that you have a body that is mobile, helps you get things done and doesn't hurt most of the times. These are all huge blessings.

Men don't tend to internalize their problems like women, they tend to become aggressive at others instead, because society tends to send the message that women have to be perfect and it's their fault for not being and men don't need to be perfect because they already are, even if they are mediocre at best. (See the common sitcom cliche of beautiful housewife who does everything right and ugly dorky husband who always does everything wrong but somehow they are a good couple) Ofcourse all people are different and deal with their problems differently but statistically you won't see men behaving as much like this.

Some people in the comments say "how can you be so focused on looks when life is more than that?". I agree, but you also have to consider why the focus is on looks in the first place. I struggled with my body image since I was 5 years old. My classmates used to tell me I was fat when I was simply tall. I wasn't visibly hurt by their comments, but I got sick of it after a while. Then I started seeing my body grow, my family was a pretty daunting and toxic one, so my brain probably used my looks as the -rightfully so- most noticeable flaw I had on top of all the others, in order to find some direction to project my issues and pain towards. Even if you are lucky enough not to focus on looks to the point where you cry when you look in the mirror, good for you. That doesn't make those who do (many of whom live in an image-driven society) any more vain. That would be like saying you can't get depressed over moving from a house to another. There are vain people, but this is a real issue, and the reason why we need body positivity more than ever. If we can manage to have one less reason for mental issues around, I'm all for it. Many eating disorders seem to have deeper roots than just what you look like, but when you add insults, jokes, unrequested comments or hints that can have a toll on people. By perpetrating this mindset, we will always keep discriminating people, and the idea that people who care about their looks more than the average person are low on IQ.

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of anorexia or body image disorders in general, but they’re not cute little quirky hobbies people just pick up because they’re bored. Read up on anorexia; your brain experiences involuntary changes that distort your reality when you look in a mirror, it’s not something you can “just get over” without years of work. It’s shaped largely by your environment. Lots of women naturally are bombarded with propaganda and programming since birth about how hot they need to be to matter. For a lot of women it takes years after adolescence to unlearn that shit and accept themselves.

Evolution seems to disagrees with you. The most illustrious looking feathers (and other appendages on males) attracts the female of the species ahead of those with less lustrous features. Think of your own reaction to a bare broad back or if you look at women to hour glass curves. it happens naturally, even if you don't obsess. We're driven so much by the desire to procreate that we rely to heavily on physical attractiveness. Yet, has it ever stopped in human history? Nope. So, shallow? Perhaps, but human? Absolutely. And sometimes it backfires.

I'm insecure not because of social media but only because of my family, my ex-friends, I have never felt good about myself because my mom never had told me that I'm her little princess or I'm perfect, no, she used to point out my belly when I was only 12 years old in front of other people or telling me that my friends are so pretty and I'm just OK, then my grandma used to say that I'm ugly and no one is going to marry me and my aunt used to call me weak and useless. Basically, my anxiety and problems with eating a proper amount of food and picking my skin started because of my culture, I didn't fit into the cultural beauty standards (and I'm so sorry for my English it's my fourth language so please don't judge)

It’s interesting how just a few years can make a huge difference. Especially with the pandemic forcing all of us to stay home for longer periods, people are valuing real, raw content more these days. Less filters & perfect lighting, and more vlogs and unfiltered photos. Shows how the beauty/advertising industry is so flighty and ever-changing. We’ll never be “perfect” because the definition is always changing. Sad that so many are making permanent decisions on temporary trends.

Just because you hate your grandma and are afraid of growing old doesn't mean most young people feel the same way. Sorry you're such a miserable insecure twat.
