Desi running in his yard with his ears flopping up and down is the happiest little dog. Yes to green on the bedroom woodwork. Spend a bit of money on your sun room and . It will bring years of joy. Dressing room soft yellow might be nice.

Hi from Annie thank you for your lovely video and opening your life to us all, love you like a big sister would love to adopt you as my sister I really would. I am 64 and I do think a lot about the future maybe too much, I remind myself take one day at a time. I think you should paint the walls many different colors every room a different color and mood, that is what I have done for years it helps the feel good vibes, bright shades are best. Green or that sunny yellow is nice for the bedroom it matches the quilts. Table clothes are good easy decorating idea so are curtains they are an instant change for any room. As for the garden you can put up a bamboo fence it is cheaper a few posts in the ground then attach the bamboo to them with wire and screws easy job done in one day, you can also spray paint the bamboo to a bright red or any color you like it can be changed often as the garden deco changes etc. I feel inspired watching you and started my U Tube channel over a week ago you can find me at Annie-qu9ik watching you gave me the confidence I still have a lot to learn and need to buy a new camera and mobile other equipment slowly but surely will get there.
Also if you buy trees get the larger bigger ones they are mostly or half grown and make good shade and add privacy too. Gives that green feel to the garden. Yes I have let myself do things like eat my fav foods and watch endless romance movies on the internet Hallmark have a good selection amongst others too. We don't need to be perfect at our age we can give ourselves a pat on the back for coming this far and just sit back and relax take it all in, then we realize just how special we all are. Cheers.

I did not have family in my new town but I eventually found my way. Very happy and secure at this point in my life. You are right that it’s our time and we deserve it. Susan - I was confronted with an ugly bare fence. May I suggest that you consider a ‘green’ fence: I planted English ivy, honeysuckle and wisteria right up against the fence. In no time I had a pretty privacy fence that brought in bees, butterflies and hummingbirds! You could then plant your precious spireas in front. And you would‘my need as many, and you would have your privacy a lot sooner!! 👏👏👏👍🙋‍♀️🥰💕‼️

I am trying to figure out my 1912 farmhouse and 1 acre yard. You could say this is my consolation gift from my husband who is moving on. Trying to fix up house, move my things, pare down my things, deal with my childrens crisis, etc is overwhelming. Right now my kitchen has been gutted and waiting for a remodel. Nothing in the house is in great shape now but I can see the potential and I will be closer to my very young grandchildren. Your videos always inspire me. I will have to think about what to prioritize within my ability to do. I have started on my Queen Bee bedroom. I want to wake up and feel beautiful in this room.
I start out with an idea of what I want and the plan changes or evolves with what the house tells me it wants. For instance, the 1940s style kitchen will now be a very elegant Paris inspired kitchen.
On a side note: my husband told the children that he hates everything I am planning. It is very hard for me to get his wants and ideas out of my head ( I suppose it will be easier when he leaves) But I remind myself that I am planning for my life as a single woman not his. You have shown us there is a good life after the fork in the road. Thanks.

My priority right now is establishing and re-establishing connections with friends - old and new. I reached out to an old friend and ended up going to lunch with her and her sister and today she invited me to a fun event in a couple of weeks. This might not sound like much but for me it’s huge! I’ve been so isolated starting with covid and then a horrible break up, which actually was a good thing and way overdue but he made it very traumatic. That’s all done and finally things are looking up!

Susan, when you are so open and so honest, you connect in a beautiful way. I love your honesty, and your “just screw it” attitude at times. We are all works in progress, and God willing we get to continue the journey. Today is my 51st anniversary. I know in my heart how blessed I am to be with my forever love and best friend, have my my health, my positive outlook….but with all that said, to too have a bit of social anxiety. And at 71, still wonder what will others think, will I look ok and on, and on and on. Maybe that keeps us on the right track, but we have to give ourselves the grace and understanding we are so generous with, with others. I love your idea of prioritizing your decorating. Knowing what is most important, making those changes, will give you much joy in making your house, truly your home. Have a fabulous week…..hugs to Desi🥰🪴

This would totally be my responsibility, but when I walked in and used my key for the first time I was excited. I've been here since my 50s. I am now 77, but I'm still changes and renovating. It seems to always be a work in progress. I'm always getting new ideas. Sometimes I have to tell myself "Ria, you need to concentrate on one thing at a time", lol. This summer it's the backyard. I'm cutting things down, making new beds, etc. Hopefully, it will be gorgeous by August.

Desi's eyes just shine! He seems so very happy. Indeed, Susan, there is no rush to decorate, it will come to you in time as you begin to live in the house. It will speak to you. I live in a co-op I bought in 1996 and it was built in 1929. I like art deco and neutral walls, so I chose a light terra cotta for my living room and a yellow -Oklahoma Wheat for my bedroom both were colors I could work with among others. I really dislike the white-grey-black palates on modern homes of today. It seems every designer uses this palate and every house is a "farmhouse", many are not like any farmhouse I knew when I grew up in Indiana and Ohio. My father was born in Michigan and I spent time there too. I love sophisticated colors that I can use as a backdrop for any accents I choose. Take your time, there is no rush and you are already off to a good start. Enjoy the fun you are having. God Bless you and Desi! Jennifer

How about faded blue jean for the walls and the trim. One color and the room looks bigger. My house needs painting and I'm going to paint the walls and trim all one color. Can't decide what color that will be and it's expensive. I love what the French do with paint. You look very happy in that adorable house. Hope you find a few yummy thrift shops. Hi Susan! I understand exactly what you are saying. My husband and I have been trying to remodel our house of 36 years. We are making progress, but we need to weed out so many things we have accumulated over the years. A lot of it is good stuff, and we kept it thinking we would use it in the future. I also am storing things from my cousin who had to go to a nursing home--more stuff. Now my mother had two mini strokes and has Aphasia. She is in a memory care unit and I am keeping her art work and all of the family pictures, her jewelry, her crafting items, etc.--more stuff. She has decided she does not need most of this stuff where she lives and she will probably never be able to live on her own again. The same goes for my cousin. Now I not only have to weed out my stuff, but all of their stuff while trying to remodel our house. I also want to make a music room downstairs and a sewing room on the other side of the room along with my crafts. I feel like I will never get back to my music. I just turned 70 and time seems to be getting away from me. After thinking it over, my 3 top priorities are 1) weed out mom's stuff to make room for me to get to my stuff. 2) weed out my cousin's stuff in the she shed to make room for other stuff. 3) Move the stuff in my basement around so I can start in one corner and work my way around the room. I have to say writing it down like this has given me inspiration to get started. Sorry this was so long. You always touch a chord in me and I feel like I have to tell you about it. Thanks for sharing your heart. Give Desi a squeeze for me. Carolyn

Oh Susan. You look fabulous! You have a way of using accessories to give each outfit some extra oomph.
During lockdown I started baking bread, cinnamon rolls etc. because, well I had all this time. But I also ate what I baked. Then the restrictions were lifted and I did lose some weight. But, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last year. My husband is an only child, so all her care rests on our shoulders. Feeling overwhelmed, hopeless and sad, I began to eat my feelings. I've probably gained 5 - 8 pounds. Not a lot, but I feel it. We're cyclists so that definitely helps but the emotions that cause me to reach for the treats that make me feel better (in the moment) are still there. It's a struggle. Counselling and exercise are definitely helping me gain a better emotional equilibrium. We just have to learn to be kind to ourselves. Do the best we can, and not be so harsh and judgemental when we look in the mirror.

I'm 66 and single. I'm moving to a new place next month. I've lived in my house for 25 years. I have to admit I'm nervous about moving to a new place and living alone. My priorities for my new home were to be closer to my daughters and grandchildren. Also I wanted a walking friendly neighborhood with good shopping nearby and places to have fun with my grandchildren. It has all those things. The house isn't perfect but it had most of my priorities. I can make changes over time. I so enjoy watching your videos.

Susan, we all need to do something for ourselves that makes us feel special. I decided a long time ago that if I was going to be alone I was going to make my home the comfortable and pretty that I could afford. Most of the items in my home have been curated over time as second hand, thrift store finds or handmade by myself, my daughter or the two of us together.

PS: I thought about this for several years… window boxes at the front windows of the house…. I couldn’t decide if they would be tacky or not. My house is little and about the same age as yours. Finally I figured out that if the boxes were well made, nothing flimsy, it would work. I painted them to match my trim and I got even braver and put up matching shutters on either side of the windows. Wow, what a big improvement that was. I keep the boxes over flowing with flowers in the summer. I even put winter plants in them, they’re never empty.

Yes, setting realistic goals for your new home is essential. But you need to give yourself A LOT of credit for how much you have already accomplished in your new home!! it all looks beautiful. Most gardeners will tell you to live in a new property for a whole year before making major changes to the backyard. It gives time to watch the seasonal changes, how the light plays through the day, and time to evaluate how you will use the space. I love that you have Desi to bring you playful joy.

I am loving seeing you so happy and enjoying this journey. I am more than ten years older and from Kentucky, but feel like we have so much in common in loving nature, decorating and life.
I have had a new house that I started redecorating before moving in -all builder’s white. I wanted some color - pale gold in living areas with pale terracotta on an accent wall in foyer and above the
fireplace. Bedroom/bathroom is an aqua, the color of water in my thinking which I love.
Then COVID hit, didn’t do anything else.
Then I lost my son, my whole life, so there have been three years that I never even went there.
I had almost decided to have everything repainted in the all off white neutral tones we see so much of and buy all off white furniture. It would be safe and not have to put much thought into it.
Then, being here with the subtle colors that I had previously chosen, I realized these colors make me happy. I think we both like the warm colors.
I am so happy and interested in seeing your color choices. I think I will always want the white woodwork, but I looking forward to seeing how you style your bedroom.
Brightens my day to see you so happy!!

I don't think I've ever felt as alone as i do right now. 20 years ago my parents died. They left their bungalow to me and my older brother. For financial reasons, we now live together in the bungalow.....and here's the BUT.....my brother is a hoarder. Not only did he hoard into the house, in the 15 years he lived here alone, but also into the front and back gardens....every square inch. I haven't set foot in the back garden for nearly 20 years and the front garden is so bad that i stick to a very narrow pathway if I leave the house. Two years ago, before he cleared that small path, i fell over a box of his stuff. I new it was going to be a bad fall. I broke my nose and had deep lacerations requiring surgery. I also broke my dominant hand (i am an artist 💔) so now drawing and painting is more challenging. In the home i have two rooms....my bedroom and the bedroom that my son had before he moved to London last year. He moved because the hoarding and my brother's attitude was taking its toll on his mental health. He told me he will never come back here. He's so angry with my brother. It's more difficult for me because i love my brother, but i am at my wit's end. I don't want to die like this 😭 i want a little garden to sit in .... I want to be able to have friends over. I haven't celebrated Christmas for several years now, and i used to love Christmas. I'm 57 and have arthritis. I don't know what to do to make a home out of this disaster. My dad built this house...he was a builder...he built the house and landscaped the most beautiful garden and now it is ruined...filled with old car parts, engines...scrap metal....toasters he won't part with...chairs that are broken. I can't even express how bad it is. He has filled every conceivable space. I'm in the uk....ive contacted environmental health, the citizen's advice bureau, I've tried so many things and no one seems to be able to make him clear it up. If he dies before me, i don't know how i will tackle it all. In the back garden is a mobile home that my grandma used to live in....he filled it so full the floor fell through and there are 5 sheds that are also full. When his old car broke, it remained in the garden and now that is filled up. I can't legally force him to sell because of a clause in our parents' will. He can't afford to buy me out and i can't afford to rent somewhere else. Sometimes i feel i can't go on but then i think of my son. I am all he has. I know I'm still luckier than a lot of people, i have a roof over my head and my country is not at war, but life is difficult. On a positive note, i do have a beautiful cat, called Shirley and fairy lights in my bedroom 😁👌🏼💕

I think with your bedding, a moss green wall behind the bed would be such a brave ,out of the box statement. Its only paint! ALso I woukd leave the sofa table its rustic style. Rooms aren't interesting without a little juxtaposition. New,,old,,shiney, matte, rough,, smooth , layers, textures. I would definitely put a privacy fence in the backyard. Even a slatted one would give some sense of intimacy in your sweet garden. Also I have learned sometimes... not to go and buy a ton of little plants, but invest in a larger, achor shrub or tree. These set the bones of the garden and establish a sense of maturity. Then go crazy with the annual color or small pennerials as the seasons come and go. Can't wait to see all your progress, both inside and out. What fun to have projects and visions to delight our minds.

Fresh lettuces, radishes, cucumbers and peppers in a few weeks, fresh tomatoes and basil; nasturtium flowers.
Stuff I used to consider humdrum and boring is now exciting and comforting.

I think it’s the best you may have ever looked! It must be from all that fresh air you are getting working in your yard. You are absolutely right about setting realistic priorities when there seems to be so much that has to get done. Was exactly what I needed to be reminded of. I wanted my apartment all white and my son-in-law thought I was absolutely mad but when he finished it, he looked around and said oh wow this is so bright and so pretty and it was. I can use all sorts of colours it’s like painting, a watercolour on white paper, I love it. I love colours. Every few years I get a little bit tired of what I have and I want to change things around . I found with white walls and all I have to do is change accessories so people come into my house and they say wow what have you done? what have I done?I bought new cushions. Different colour scheme, but still fits in with my overall colours. So easy with white walls. Anyway, everybody has their own opinion and that’s mine. I don't have a fenced yard either. I can see my neighbors. They can see me. My priority for some time now has been my landscaping. I'm trying to make my little patch of the world a prettier place. I'm close to the end. I'm happy with the plants I've chosen and I'm happy with where I planted them. Now it's time to let them mature and tend to them. This is what I'm hoping will be the easier part of gardening. Getting to know all my plants and learning what each one needs from me. My second priority is inside my house. I have started some remodeling, but it is not yet finished. I hope to get that done in the next couple of years. By then, I will be 62 and I can focus more on me and less on garden/house. I can focus on relaxing morning and evening routines, enjoying the home I've created, time with my family members, and more travel and fun activities.. Great video today (and always). I appreciate and enjoy your company and look forward to seeing you every Saturday.

Desi looks so happy & free running around in his back yard.
He is the cutest little fur baby.
Decorating a home takes time and so far you have great ideas.
    Thank you for sharing

Your happiness is infectious. There is definitely a beach vibe going on with your rustic side table.
I would love to hear one of the conversations you have with your grandson while you’re both out digging in the garden. His thoughts on having his beautiful Nana and Desi living right beside him. Ask him what he thinks how you should decorate your garden space.
Nana’s new life through the eyes of a little boy.

Desi makes me want a dog of my own. He is so precious and must give you so much joy - and good company. Your personality is vibrant - that's why you need pops of color around you! In your quilt is a very soft blue (I think its blue) - that would be lovely and very soothing for sleep. Bad yards develop over time - don't rush yourself. Spireas grow quickly. Visiting with you is like listening to a good friend. Thank you!

You can plant sunflowers to make a temporary "Natural" privacy fence. 2 to 3 rows will do the trick and the seed is very inexpensive

Great hearing how your dealt with your anxiety by dropping the strict diet rules and letting go when you first moved into your apartment, but like you, I'm worried about the long-term effects of junk food. Those were indeed "the good old years" of TV with Dr Frasier Krane, etc., staying up late to watch whatever, when life was new and our whole life was ahead of us. Keep going Susan, you're so inspirational! Your insight and forward vision are what makes your channel stand out.

    Dear Susan,
you have a very beautiful soul.
I am living in a House in Northern Germany with my husband and daughter. We were keeping things, like clothes, toys of my 17 year old. Like old handbags, all kinds of stuff. So, your Dressing room was like a mess, full of things. Same goes for the bureau, and utility room downstears. And you know what, I am starting to let go. And It makes me happy. And you are right, you have to set priorities. So we started with the dressing room and we disposed quite a lot of things. It gives me room and a kind of freedom inside. Thank you so much for your beautiful videos.
    Take care.
    Susanne

Best advice of all. Take your time, do it way you want it so you don't have to re-do, or be sorry.

    1. You did grow up to be "pretty like them." 2. Gardening is a process that takes patience. Frugal gardeners, like me, accept cuttings and divisions from friends and plant perennials that spread. I am reducing my lawn for eco as well as labor reasons, and each year I expand the perennial beds a bit more. Thank you for being a light in the world.
