It's rather ironic that you mentioned the memorial on your neighbors steps. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the funeral at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA, of my friend's father, Ernest L. DeSoto, a Vietnam veteran who was MIA for 54 years. His remains were found two years ago and it has taken this long to properly excavate and identify the remains. It was a very complicated process which included DNA testing along with several visits to his family to gather information prior to confirming the discovery. As you can imagine the family's grieving process has gone on as long as he's been missing. Fortunately, his widow, Joyce who just turned 90 years old in May, was able to witness his return. She fought hard all these years to find him while being a mother and father to their three children. She's just as much a hero as he is. No one can say how long the grieving process should take. For this family it has taken 54 years. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your neighbor's memorial for her soldier. XO

Bless you for sharing your story. God keep this Vietnam soldier in his loving care. My oldest brother (who was movie star looking) was sent to Korea as a young man. He passed in his 50's. He was a peace maker and really never belonged in a fighting profession but he answered the call of duty. We are enjoying so much freedom because of what young people fought for. Happy 4th of July. Blessings galore.

As a Gold Star Mom, I totally love and appreciate this beautiful ladies sweet memorial at her home. I have many displays throughout my home to my son. You are right Susan in saying that some people think they know when we should be done grieving, but we are all different. Some people are more comfortable being reflective with their own thoughts & memories and enjoy time and space to themselves after they have lost a loved one. Some people don't want to be alone with their thoughts and want other people around them all the time. But regardless, we all must find our "new normal" that is anything but normal. I, like the lady with the tribute to the military service of her loved one, also display a tribute to my son filled with patriotism and love. Every day is a Memorial Day for me having lost my son while serving our country, 17 years ago, that still feels like just a few days ago. I am not wallowing in grief, I am so thankful that I had my son for 20 years and I am blessed. I never want him forgotten or his sacrifice for all of us. He is always with me in my thoughts & in my heart. I carried him in my womb for 9 months, but I now carry him in my heart until one day when I will see him again. Love never dies and we all choose are own way how to continue feeling & celebrating that love daily. Thank you for sharing this beautiful little story of this loving tribute as we celebrate the greatest country in the world's birthday. So many have fought and died for that freedom. God bless the USA!

First: I want to thank your son for his most precious gift. His life. For us. I’m so sorry you lost him. And, thank you for saying what you did. I lost my husband three years ago. He served in Vietnam on a river patrol boat in the Navy. He was also exposed to Agent Orange. His death certificate (from the VA) attributes his death to Agent Orange. It showed itself throughout the years through illnesses, ending up in Pancreatic cancer and death. He was healthy otherwise, so when he returned home, he ultimately became a sheriff's deputy and served that way. He always wanted to make a difference and help people. I may have lost him three years ago, but it feels like it was yesterday. I miss that man so much. I loved him with all my heart. I can’t imagine dating or “finding” anyone else. But that’s just me. And that’s just my love for him. But I hear people talk about how others should let go and move on when they’re widowed or lose a child, their parents or their grandparents. I’m sorry if it bothers others that I can’t “get over” my husband's death, but I can’t do that. Love goes on. Love is the only thing that lasts forever. How people show their loss is different. Those people who want others to move on or get over it can do so when it’s their turn to deal with it, but I think they should keep their thoughts to themselves until that time comes. I’ll tell you what, though: I’m tired of hearing about it. I’ll say prayers for you and your son. Thank you again. ❤️

Having been very lucky in life with a husband that was a very successful Alpha guy with a heart of gold that I was married to for 44 years before he left me for the other side of life, he gave me the resources to travel, move, build numerous big houses so since the early 70's I've collected a wide range of "antiques" which could almost all be called "folk art" today. Paintings, vintage furniture from different eras, pottery, hooked rugs, quilts, woven pieces, hand painted animals, creatures big and small, beautiful teapots/teacups, figurines, dishes and the like. Whatever caught my eye at the time when we'd go "antiquing" together a million times for amusement! All items filled with MEMORIES of him wrapped in each and every item that have been a part of my life since almost the moment I met him and his loving generous nature and love he had for me and my interests.
I've been told by a few friends (?) that I have too much STUFF, it would drive them crazy and I should get rid of all of it and move into a tiny house and forget those wonderful years I had with a man that was the "love of my life" and you know what I tell them "not going to happen" and then I think quietly "I'll live with this stuff until the day I die!" I also think silently to myself "none of your business what I do with my life, time or what I live with so mind your own business and leave me to live my life the way I see fit!"
Buy what you love, can afford and make life your own! Never listen to anyone else's ideas of what you should do because they're not YOU!

I feel when we look at our homes, we need to ask ourselves "What do I LOVE"? When we make our home full of what we love, people feel at home there. You can sense it. Although many love the minimalist style or the open concept, no personality look, I prefer homes with character and a sense of who lives there. I love thrifting & blend new and old in my home. Cannot agree more about the quality of older furniture. I always sage them when I get them home and then wonder about all the conversations that piece of furniture has listened to.:)

Decorating with folk-art, paintings and vintage furniture is a wonderful way to live fulfilled.
Life with precious memories of a time we once shared with loved ones is special. Only God knows why He has called others home and others remain, and we all have special unique stories that only He knows about for we have a purpose.
What a lovely tribute of a loved one that has gone from this life yet remains in our hearts. Your neighbor has lovingly displayed the love in her heart to share with friends & neighbors. Her soldier like many others that have passed on would have wanted her/us to go on with life for that is the journey we have to take to be reunited. 🕊🕊🕊

Thank you for this video. It really hit home. I had a woman that said I lived in a museum. Even my own son has said things about the way my home is decorated. I live in my childhood home. My parents and I moved here in 1970 or 1971. I’ve never left. I collect things that make me feel good. Most of my things are from when mom and dad were here and married. It hurt my heart for them to say those things. I even collect Elvis Presley. My house is decorated very tasteful. It’s not cluttered or tacky. I miss my parents and my brother and other family so much. But, my HOME is my sanctuary. I’ve spent so many wonderful hours here. I go thrifting and to yard sales every so often. And if something makes me happy or would be of use I buy it. And, there isn’t a set time to grieve and move on. That’s the most disrespectful thing anyone can ever say.

I can never replace them again at this stage of my life . The pieces I had can’t even be found anymore . They had a story and so much character . Grief is all the love in our heart and why it hurts so much. We take them with us and although we move forward they remain with us on our journey.

“….things that impress me, not other people.” Yes!! Well said. I’m 65 (almost) and over the years I’ve ‘collected’ items for my home that are definitely unique unto me. And if I’m out and about and I see something that touches me then I’ll get it. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve found that I’m very selective on my purchases.

Excuse my bad English, I'm from Germany. It's been a long time since i learned it.
    There is a saying here:
"Bevor du über mich und mein Leben urteilst, zieh meine Schuhe an und geh meinen Weg."
    I try to translate it:
"Before you judge me and my life, put on my shoes and walk my way"

I am a big thrifting gal. I love the trend of not following a trend. If you choose colors, pieces of furniture and decor that you love, it will always be in style. I can't wait to get in my own home and decorate it. One day, it will happen.

  • @mmcs4973
    @mmcs4973 ปีที่แล้ว

Honoring someone who has passed on is not the same as grief, it's merely a nod to say "I remember" a mark of respect, rather like crossing oneself going past a church. As for trends, forget them. Two of my most precious pieces of furniture are solid mahogany, very old when the were bought in Ireland in the 50s, traveled to South Africa with my mother in the 80s and are now in my apartment in Vancouver since early 2000s. They are like nothing you would find here, one very decoratively carved console the other a bureau, completely out-of today's style. And yet, I remember where they stood in my childhood home, and they nourish my soul when I polish them. Only have things in your lovely home that nourish you, you have earned that Susan ❤☘

I agree that our home should reflect who we are. It should be a place of refuge and sanctuary, in which we can relax and refresh ourselves from the chaos in the world around us. I don't follow trends, either. I have a place of prayer in my home; a space at the end of my hallway that I have dedicated to the Lord. My granddaughter is three and she wants to go to Grandma's "church", aka my apartment!! I have many thrifted crystal and beautiful dishes and tea sets. I have bookshelves and comfortable places to curl up with a book. My style is more European, with dark woods. My daughters are french country with light woods. I love how each of our homes reflect our own personalities. That is what makes a home unique. I love your style. Thanks for the videos!!

Watching your video on this full moon night while unable to sleep. What you said about grief is so true. Death is timeless, and anyone who has experienced profound loss understands that you never move on, but eventually find ways to reinvent yourself into the changed person you are, as you accept that life has closed a chapter and opened a new one. It took me a long time to understand that I had to leave the old life behind-a life I struggled to maintain while feeling pain from reminders of the old life that were everywhere. When my husband died, I had no idea who I was without him. We had been together so long, and our children were not yet fully raised. I poured myself into them, making sure they left the nest prepared to face the world, in spite of the loss of their father. After they were gone, I fell apart for awhile. Then I pulled myself together and tried to fit in as usual, with the same friends and community that had been our couple’s world. Everyone was so nice, but I felt they did expect me to get over it, and there was nobody to really relate to about the death because I was relatively young when it happened, and they were all married couples. It required putting on a happy face while feeling lost inside. In time, I learned that it felt more peaceful outside that community, and I began slowly slipping away from it. It was ultimately a couple of incidents where people told me to get over it that motivated me to leave. These days, I choose friends carefully and gravitate towards those capable of empathy. It has allowed me to live more authentically, and to discover and explore the creative side of life that was always there but sometimes overshadowed by other things. Leaving one’s old, comfortable community and home is not easy, but sometimes it must be done in order to find one’s self, and thrive.

My wife and I found a sailor in a small boat that rocked back and forth on a tiny platform in a restaurant our son bought. it was such an interesting piece of folk art and no one who worked in the restaurant knew anything about it. It was just there on top of the dessert fridge. About 10 years later, we viewed a home with our real estate agent as we searched for a new place to live. My wife saw a similar piece on a table in the home. Both of the owners couldn't remember where or when they got it but they really like it. Today our sailor who we rescued from the restaurant when it was sold sits in the same room on a similar table where its friend used to rock back and forth.

Lov❤e your listening room idea. I was born in the early 60's and loved hearing my Dad playing his violins and playing his old vinyl records on the "tube" stereo in it's now vintage, beautiful wooden cabinet. It is still there in my parent's home, along with my Dad's music stand and violins. Today, my youngest brother writes his songs and makes his music videos there. So, yes, a music room is a place to relax, enjoy, and remember.

I love that someone put the time and love into a shrine for the person who they lost. Do you ever stop missing a child? Your husband? Never. You shouldn't move on because they're forever a part of you. You should be proud of them and always honor their memory. I still go to Veterans' Day services and I'm damned proud of my father who was a three-war vet. He's been gone since 1997. A hundred years couldn't erase my pride and I have moved on. But, there's still a Dad shaped hole in my life. On another note, your house looks beautiful and I guess I'm trendy. I painted my kitchen blue 8 years ago. The rest of it might be trendy next year? Who knows? LOL I hope that Desi is sooo happy getting to play in his yard whenever he wants. No more waiting for a lead and trudging out through a parking lot or down a walkway. Good boyo. Love to you both xx
