Thumbs up to the Distortion +.
Randy and Zakk are both perfect gifted guitar players. Just different styles and different techniques.
What really matter is their music. Randy is no longer with us but his music and influence lives on.
Zakk is still rockin' and Rollin' with his music and influence.
For me Rhoads was always the best, but I'm a huge fan of Zack Wylde's work with Ozzy. Id say they are both just awesome in parallel.
+MrSpencerMcIntosh Zakk*
Sebastián Darakjian yeah sorry, autocorrect.
hahaha
I bought the MXR D+ yesterday and i'm satisfied with it, at the beggining i was worried because it had only two knobs. lol
Randy = emotion... Zakk = Randys inspiration + harmonics..
Both amazing but Randy wins
I used to use both an MXR Dist+ and a Boss SD-1 for boosting the front end of my amps. The way I would run both of them, was I'd crank the level/output all the way up, and turn the drive/dist all the way down. Gave me the best tone for leads. That way it wasn't coloring the amps tone too much but gave me just a little more mid-range punch and took a bit of the low-end out to tighten it up.
The tone on the RR MXR sounds cleaner and crisper on the clean.
Randy is so awesome, that he kills zakk in playing style, awesomenes, pedels , and every thing else!!!!! LONG LIVE RHOADS!!!!!!!
TTK, the shoot outs are really cool, thanks man!!!
I had a feeling you'd be doing this shootout :3 Great job!
Yes! I owned Randy's Distortion plus, Chorus, Flanger and 10 band eq and i had a wah and delay pedal and my favorite out of them all was the 10 band eq, because it was the biggest factor of my tone! It really boosted my tone.
distortion + is awesome. great in the bedroom for practice too without going deaf.
How are you doing Tone King? I am tone master. I found this video very useful! You really make it easier decide what I want to purchase.. Hopefully one day I will become a tone King also🤴
The Randy Rhoads distortion + is used for distortion purposes as an alternative for unwanted stock amp distortion. However, it did have a great midrange tone when used for an overdrive. When it comes to the Zakk Wylde overdrive, this pedal serves as a means to boost the signal on an amp to get more bite and grit. It can be comparable to an ibanez ts 9. However, the ts 9 does not nearly have as much gain and brilliance as the Wylde overdrive and as much high end clarity. The harmonics sing on the Wylde overdrive as opposed to the ts 9 or even the Rhoads distortion + in my opinion.
this was a good demo i like both
Hi! Thanks for this great review, seems like you know what you are taking about! My favorite band is Rush, I just love his overdriven sound on Moving Pictures, can you tell me how he used the distortion + at that time? Thanks
Nice video I tried the advice from others to use a super distortion in the bridge with the script logo + pushing the amp and it does give a nice Crowley solo vibe
I love how the Dist+/Randy has more of a warmth and in lsitening to this shootout you can hear certain elements of Randy's tone. I vote Randy! :)
Rock On Tone King!!! Awesome Video as usual my Friend!!! \m/
I noticed that the overdriven amp was a high treble gain and when you add the MXR Distortion it boosts the overall treble gain/tone on the amp and makes it sound fatter, crisper and louder. When you add the MXR Wylde Overdrive it takes that high treble gain/tone amp and eliminates a lot of the treble gain/tone and the sound is more a bass tone. Its like you took a distortion pedal and turned the tone knob all the way down. I personally own the Wylde Overdrive and love it. By itself its a really nice pedal if you're not looking for a full distortion pedal that has a super amount of distortion and just want a mid amount of distortion. If you have another distortion pedal (not amp distortion), it will give it a fatter and fuller sound to it and doesn't really mess with the overall sound to my knowledge, it just adds to it. Honestly when you listen to records by Zakk Wylde or listen to him live you really don't notice when he uses the overdrive and when he doesn't. Unless he just keeps it on all the time.
But honestly, if you have a good distortion pedal, I really don't see the need for an overdrive pedal, unless you are using a distortion pedal such as the Boss Blues Driver which has subtle distortion and you wanna add more distortion to it without killing the overall sound as you would if you added a full distortion pedal like the Boss MT-2 or MXR Fullbore Metal. But those two type of distortion pedals do not need an overdrive added to them. However, the Boss Blues driver would probably sound killer when you add the Wylde Overdrive. It would give you the ability to keep that nice dirty blues sound like ZZ Top and then be able to crank on the distortion when you want while retaining that nice blues sound.
The thing about the ZW44 is that when driving an overdriven tube amp, it adds tightness and crunch to the distortion. It's one of my favorite boost pedals
... the Distortion + is not an overdrive... it's closer to a fuzz pedal but w/ more crunch. The Zakk pedal is an overdrive... basically a modded clone of the Boss SD-1 which is a copy of the TubeScreamer...
it might help if you put the output on full with the wylde
conrad barnes the middle. On on the ZW is at twelve o’clock never changes thst.
Both pedals sound good, I never really heard the Distortion + before. I am not a fan of Signature items usually but I used the Wylde Overdrive for a long time until I got a Fulltone OCD. The Wylde pedal has never let me down.
You will need the blue MXR 10 band graphic EQ together with the Dist+ for Rhoads or Murray tones
thanks very much man!
Zakk sets his OD as a boost, and removes the knobs...
But he maxes out the levels... So everything would be set at 10
ive been watching these videos that you demo gear,my question is what pedal would match up good to get a randy rhoads tone threw a bugera 1960 infinium?they did a cascade mod on that amp already ,do I need to get a mxr distortion plus or just use the amps drive ?thanks for any advise maybe you can give .
oooo love it, that dist + just screams randy at me, thanks for explaining the dist on top of a gain channel, guess im a bit of a noob in that area coz i don't normally play like that, but i get it now, cheers.
My friend uses the Zakk Wylde signature overdrive for jazz. It's kind of unbelievable how good it sounds with jazz being a smooth clean overdrive.
Very interesting... the difference between these 2 pedals makes complete sense given the different configurations and gear Randy and Zakk use. The dist + is brighter and ha more gain, makes sense since Randy used plexi type amps and passive pickups. Zakk uses JCM 800's which have more gain than plexies and active pickups. Makes complete sense and it's great that MXR makes these pedals affordable. Great video TTK!
Im trying to get a randy tone..i have a vox ac15 and im using a ocd v4...with the ocd on it sounds like a plexi or even a jcm 800..would you suggest me getting a distortion plus to push the sound to make it sound like randy rhoads?
Randy's pedal was better just IMO because it beefed up and added to the volume and fullness of the sound and did not create it's own sound like I felt the Zakk pedal did by taking the sound in a slightly different direction. I think most people over-dress their sound with effects, when really the distortion on most good amps is already plenty good enough sound that only needs basic boosting from pedals. MXR Distortion+ is perfect for that.
What Randy basically did was run his Marshalls at about half volume so think Paul Kossoff amount of gain. Pretty clean distortion. He then used the Distortion+ as his dirty sound (Distortion cranked, Output at about 9 o clock) and his clean sound was with it off. That's also why he ran a EQ pedal with the D+, to boost some mids. That's the Randy Rhoads sound in a nutshell. Also, he never used the modded channel in his Plexi's.
I believe it was the opposite. He'd run the output on the MXR at full and the distortion at no higher than 10-11:00
THIS^^^^^^
What's the tune right at the beginning of the video?
Great shootout! It's important to note that Randy used passive pickups and Zakk uses EMG's, so there's a bit of difference there. I have both in different guitars and used both pedals in my own shootout. The amp used was a 1995 Mesa Dual Recto with EL-34 Svetlana tubes. The guitars were a Les Paul (passive) and an ESP Gus G (active). I also used a ZV (passive). The results were very close to the respective guitarists, especially when using a TC Mimiq for the thickening (second amp 1995 Mesa Tremoloverb). When my shoulders heal up, I'll record examples.
It seems like I would use the MXR distortion + as a booster for solos and the Wylde pedal as a booster for riffing- that's just me! This is ofc being judged thru speakers on an iPhone 5- maybe not the best medium for this. They most definitely sound completely different hooked up to your own equipment and in your presence as opposed to through youtube...
Wow that's the tone I have been looking for, but will it sound good in a 8 inch speaker amplifier?
why cant you put both of them together?
I wonder about using another pedal to drive one of these. E.G. I Have a boss OS2 Overdrive/distortion. It on its own doesn't do it for me as far as a classic metal sound, however when I use the Overdrive to boost into amp distortion I get more what I want. So I'd like to find a good metal pedal and use the os2 as a pre to goose it. Because I really like the os2 for more subtle Overdrive but for dist it's too muddy. My shortlist is mxr dist +
Mxr 78' badass
Mxr distortion III
Marshall jack hammer(seems most versitile)
they both totally rock!
ZW-44 with tone control- yes plz!
Randy Rhoads R.I.P. brother!
what about the wylde od stacked in front of the dist+ on the clean channel?
well i own the zakk wylde, sounds awesome and it really boosts the amplifier very good (Bugera V22). I'm wondering how it sounds the mix of both pedals ?_? looks like it can be a good option to have both pedals
@pinkypimpalicous is this your opinion or are you stating fact? I'm interested in the dis+ and wondering if I should get the 10eq also. I know randy used them together to push his plexi.
the best distortion pedal ever made in my opinion !!! i love distortion plus!!!
@electrickithara the pedal is to boost the overdrive it makes a difference as opposed to just gain from the amp...i think anyway...
I would think running the test with the dirty channel just to breakup and pwr tubes hot. Then tap in the pedal. Running alot of gain and adding more is meh.
I like the way the distortion+ instead of wylde's. Wyldes pedal takes away the highend almost completely while mudding out the low and boosting the noise while the d+ boosts everything and crisply overdrives the WHOLE tone not just his low end
whats that song in the starting????????really liked it....
@MrRobGodek couldnt agree more. use the same settings as Randy did, run it into a 10 band EQ properly set, then into a cascaded Marshall 1959. And use either a Gibson Les Paul Custom or something with a Dimarzio PAF and Super Distortion as pickups.
Wicked comparison, tbh im going with the Wylde overdrive :D
can someone please explain the differences between distortion and overdrive pedals????
Those were some sick harmonics. Reminded me of "Play with Me" or some Van Halen.
TTK, you should crank the tone on the ZW for the comparison since the D+ doesn't have a pot blocking tone flow.
Hello tone king you rock man i have a question i love black and death metal but i dont know wich pedala to buy can you help me
diditech makes the Death Metal Distortion. its got a good high gain.
ok thanks man
what was the intro from?
Just got my ZW44 today. It really isn't suited for the clean channel work but sounds awesome when put over the amp's overdrive. I only have a little 20watt Orange Crush amp though.
Distotion is used instead of a gain channel, or if your amp does not have a gain channel. normally engaged on a clean channel, if used over a gain channel it can get very noisy and not very musical. if you dont like your dirt channel, or want different dirt, use distortion. Overdrive is used to push your sound thicker or louder to sound like a cranked tube amps natuaral break up. can be used for crunch on a clean channel or boosting your gain channnel for that little extra somthing..
are you changing all these songs because of copyright reasons or just cause u like playing them different?
@Torrello13 well, either pedal is great by itself, but when I started out, I used the Distortion + with a peavey amp and the sound sucked. Then I upgraded to a 78 Marshall JMP and the sound was so much better. Then I added the 10 Band to the mix and I got the perfect sound. Depends on the sound you are looking for, but if you want that classic Randy-ish tone, thats the way to go. Just gotta set the EQ's right on both pedals along with the amp settings.
@ryankuisti Can you show us how well you play? Thanks!
i like the bright sound of the rhoads pedal
TTK are you turning down your tone pots on your guitar/amps cause your high note always seem really rounded instead of sharp and clear..
Great video, you should make shoot between zakk over drive, ocd and the maxon od9 pro plus, that would be a sick video, and maybe play it on the mini rectifier
i actually like mxr dist+ i have one that i use and i use it with a basicly clean chanel on my amp (sometimes really slightly overdriven) and combined with my hollowbody copy of gibson es330 (not p90`s but still singles) gives me just the tone i want and IMO wen you get closer to max Gain it resembles of fuzz more than OD... but definitely not a distortion, od with a bit of fuzz... my vote goes to dist+
lol the output is a lot higher on the yellow...how can you tell the difference tuned to sound exactly the same. i guess there you have it ZW is better same sound half the output
You really need to put Altec speakers in your cabinets if you want to nail Randy Rhoads's sound.
@lmsjr I don't know if the MXR 10 band EQ was made to run with the Dist +, But I do know that Randy Rhoads used the MXR 10 band EQ with the Dist +
randy only used the volume level as a boost,he didnt use the distortion on the mzr, only used as a boost to push the amp!
What's a MXR band 10 ????????
I think i liked the zakk's when on channel 2
and yes, i enjoyed it :) I love comparing sounds
Just by themselves on clean I like the distortion +. Had more clarity and notes poped, wylde overdrive was a little murky. then though when there used to push the dirty channel the wylde overdrive was clearer and the harmonics came through. at least to my ear they seemed to flip when compared clean and dirty. interesting if anyone else thought the same.
To my ear, based on TTK's overall setup, the RR MXR Dist sounded great as both a standalone distortion on the clean channel & as a boost over the gain channel.. Zakk's signature pedal sounded a bit weak as a standalone on the clean channel, but it sounded really f'kn sweet when used as a gain supplement/boost over the dirty channel..
If I were in a position where I had to choose one or the other based on ability & versitility or usefulness, I'd have to go with MXR's old standard.. The Zakk model would make a great lead boost pedal to get your solo's above the mix or even as a means of dressing up an amp with mediocre distortion.. On the other hand, if you found yourself stuck with a loud amp cursed with shitty sounding distortion in a battle of the bands situation or whatever you'd be better off with a more well rounded dist box that is capable of sounding great in any situation, especially as a standalone.. It can be the difference between trying to explain newly unbiased tubes to ignorant spectators & quickly flippin' over to clean amp & a dependable distortion to finish the gig with dignity still intact..:-D
I believe with those settings you see on the distortion + @ 2:37, you could play AC/DC type things.
@lmsjr I wasnt 100% sure but it does make a lot of sense, being the Distortion + has no tone control, but I read tone controls on a pedal mess with the tone. The new 10 band eq from MXR is excellent to use with the MXR Dist + as it has a gain boost to boost the gain of the pedal as well, its the foundation for my preferred guitar tone.
thank you for stating what people already know about both guitarists sir points out the obvious
The ZW seems to have more of a mid boost than the D+, which makes sense since it's an overdrive rather than a distortion. Seems very similar to a tubescreamer to me. I prefer the sound of the D+ on its own, but in front of a gain channel the ZW definitely tightens things up.
why he dont play ozzy songs?
Honestly the wylde overdrive is more of a boost pedal wylde himself has said the pedal doesn't change your tone just boosts ur punch and on top of that, Dimebag used the wylde overdrive occasionally. these two pedals are very powerful, and both serve as great crunchy pedals, just my opinion
is the wylde one worth 70 bucks?
the dis+ is very similar in circuit to the DOD 250 that Yngwie uses. has that crisp cut. A little different type of boost that an overdrive. I use one of each for different levels of attack. They also then add different texture to blues sounds on the clean channel. The Zakk definately has more versatility with the tone control though. Both rule!
I got a 70s MXR Distortion + off of Ebay. The thing sounds beastly. I've never used Wylde's, but the Distortion + sounds better imo and it has a simpler interface.
the ZW-44 would have sounded lot better if the tone control would have been utilized IMO, I ADMIRE BOTH GUITARIST-2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT STYLES!! ...thanx TTK 4 all you do!!!!
@brokensoul70 Love my OCD, thing kicks major butt. I throw a Baber Tone Press or a Xotic Effects RC-Boost in front of it depending on how its set. Combine with the OCD it kicks butt for what its worth
I love how the intro's are all heavy and then when TTK plays it's chords...
Hey man love your videos but I recon with some of that shred stuff you should sit down with a metronome and just start super slow, keep making awesome vids
well with the mxr distortion, the wiring is basically the same as the an overdrive pedal
and turn the reverb off please at distortion/overdrive sounds
Do one on Criss Oliva's sound please?
This isn't really a fair contest. The Distortion+ is obviously the better distortion pedal because it is capable of cranking out quite a bit more distortion and it sounds really good. However, for some strange reason, he didn't compare the two at milder distortion (or overdrive) levels since this is what the Zakk pedal is designed for. Unfortunately, he spends most of his time trying to show us that each of these pedals can be used as a boost for an already distorted amp. IMO, if you want to play Ozzy-style heavy metal, you are better off with the Distortion + since it creates a bit more distortion (on its own). Thus, you're sound isn't dependent upon what type of amp you have or how loud the volume is turned up. While the Zakk Pedal may be capable of making a similar sound on the right amp, the Distortion Plus should nail it regardless and should be better for most bedroom-type setups. Too bad he didn't compare the sounds at milder distortion levels so we could see which pedal made the best overdrive.
I am not freaking out. I was just simply replying to your comment and pointing out what was said on the video to answer to your comment. This comparison is logical.
Man, this is a tough one. I think each one, in front of their owners original amps, would really scream. The RR Dis+ in front of a modified Plexi would really kill. Same with the ZW OD. But all things being equal, I think I would go for the ZW OD. Tomorrow, I would probably choose differently :-P
the randy roads had more hair to it, i like that one more.
dimebag and zakk are used/using the wylde overdrive only for sustain... not as a distortion
Definitely more high-end rasp and gain with the Distortion Plus.
@MrJohnson129 i know right? that would really make the test better
people compare them.... but the people don't notice that they are both fucking amazing!!!
Distortion pedals and Overdrive pedals are two different types of Tech. Distortion pedals usually 'force' clipping (diodes or via cmos). Overdrives are just mini amplifiers naturally distorting wave forms and are really meant to 'overdrive' a dirty amplifiers internal preamp. You should have only compared a overdrive to overdrive or distortion to distortion to make this comparison fair.
Tone King...love your demos...but this one has left me more confused...I can't see a clean winner between your amp vs amp Dist + vs amp Wylde
Randy's
OD And Dist are 2 dif circuits not the same sound for that reason.
why dont they just build amps with the boost already in the dam things?
