    I've done it both ways. Overdrive>distorison, I'm distorting an already overdriven signal. I find that the sound is a bit thin. Using distorion>overdrive, I feel I get a truer distotion that I "boost" with the overdrive. I run my fuzz before overdrive and after distortion. That said, I don't genearlly distort the tone before going into fuzz, but I may use the overdrive to boost that signal. At any rate, this what works for me, at this point in time.

    Been playing metal and thrash since '78 and have always had the od after distortion on my boards to boost distortion and to accent solo's. Actually in all my years of playing and bei g in bands never saw anyone put the od first... But music and tone is personal so experiment and find what's best for your style....

      If your OD is after the distortion aren't you distorting your boost when accenting solos? If you were actually wanting to boost your distortion you'd need to do that prior to it being in the chain?

    I always have higher gain pedals going into lower gains.So I can press lower gains to have my various rhythms then kick in the distortion.BOSS pedals are superb.Good to see a nicely presented 'basic' but clear and concise video to remind us what everything is all about.Well Done

  • @jppagetoo

    Overdrive->distortion allows the distortion pedal to act as a compressor of sorts after the boost., In many ways it is defeating what a boost is meant to do. You get very little distiortion from the amp but more distiortion form the distortion pedal.
    Distortion->Overdrive takes the compressed signal from the distortion pedal and adds volume back in, a LOT! That overdrives the front end of the amp too. The result is almost no compression effect, and distiortion from both the distortion pedal and the overdriven input of the amp.

    • @vlogress11c81
      @vlogress11c81 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So if I use a compressor I should probably put the distortion before my overdrive. I noticed that with my od before my distortion and the compressor on it just got way to quiet and muddy.

    • @tds2117
      @tds2117 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That doesn’t make any sense at all. You can’t decompress a wave form which has already been compressed.
      The OD at the end basically acts as an outside tone knob, in the most basic sense. It’s altering the sound of the distortion at the end of the line. It doesn’t have magical properties.

  • @tds2117

    To my ear I liked the distortion after the od. I tried a compressor into a BD-2 into a boss DS-1 then into a boss Od 3..and I loved it. I just use the bd2 if I want more clean then add ds1 for some solos and the Od3 to boost it. It works for me! Thanks for the video!

  • @julianbirch7466
    @julianbirch7466 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yep, I used to run overdrive into distortion but have recently swapped. The distortion into overdrive really thickens the sound up to me and is a much more full-bodied boost when the overdrive is already on then I switch on the distortion for solo duties etc.

    I use Keeley moded DS-1 into DigiTech Bad Monkey (Tube Screamer) with amazing result. The fact is that the pedal that comes later in the chain impact the shape of your tone more so when I use crunch tone with the bad monkey screamer (which is by the way one one of the cheapest and BEST pedal I ever owned) and then kick the DS-1 you don’t hear significant change in EQ of the sound rather it just get more heavier and more distorted but when you use them the other way around when you kick on the DS1 there is a significant jump on tonal character of the sound which you typically get when changing a patch on multi effect units and distortion is also no as beefy as the other method.

    Once again the internet proves the most important pedal we own: TUNER.
    That said I always put lower gain into higher gain. Good demo of how each way can change the sound, thanks for doing that.
    I will say I liked the tone best here with the sd1 last, but that’s only because it actually had some mids. The takeaway here is whatever is last will shape the tone most. If you consider how people like zakk use the sd1 it’s into a dirty Marshall (which is essentially his distortion “pedal”).
    Anyway thanks for demoing. Got to get me an SD1 now apparently... never had one either!

  • @lichen8855
    @lichen8855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It really depends on many things but I find that running a distortion into an overdrive with a bit of gain on it smooths out the distortion characteristic. But maybe you are already doing that by running the distortion into a hot amp. Maybe then you want to use the overdrive before them both as a boost. It's also helpful to know what the eq character of your pedals and amp are. This combo in the video works well because the DS-1 is mid scooped and the SD-1 is mid focused. They complement each other. Of course, as always, there are so many factors!

I love the ds1 and with the um300 before it, it adds to the ds1 tone. I would say the answer to this question is whatever works for the sound your going for.

    I prefer DS 1 before SD1 to boost lead parts or solos. SD1 will boost mids that functions like a TS9 so I guess it's better to function that way if you're into lead stuff so you wont get burried in the mix while playing live. For me if you prefer placing an OD befere a distortion you should try BOSS OD-3 or NOBELS ODR-1 for natural sounding overdrive... OD3/ODR1> DS1> SD1 or DS1>OD3/ODR1> SD1

    Overdrive first, your distorting the overdrive...distortion first, your overdriving the disrotion. Both work and tons of options...I have lately been running a metal zone into a SD-1....tons of tone options with the MT-2 eq...for those who never quite got the metal zone eq. Down...there is a guide if you look up the metal zone tone settings.a print out. Adjust from there from overdrive, rock to metal. Both work as many take an Ds1 and overdrive that...like that guy Steve Vai..

    OD>Distortion. Retains clarity and adds right amount of hair more or less whereas Distortion is it!, harder to adjust and retain clarity. Unless it’s an old MIJ boss DS-1 or similar variant (MXR Distortion) that can be adjusted with less gain and still retain the overall amp tone and character. There. That’s the post.

I can get such a variety of tones this way. The possibilities are almost endless. I guess if I ever get a clean Fender amp, I might go down the distortion pedal rabbit hole.

      @Stephen Docherty My pedal order is.. PolyTune 3, MXR CustomComp, Phase 95, Oxblood (set more like boost and tone shaper), Keeley Darkside (set as drive into modulation), LPD Eighty 7, and Joyo Metal Extreme. That goes into the front. In the loop, it's Oceans 11, Source Audio Programmable EQ, Flashback Mini, Ditto mini. It took me a while and a lot of back and forth with the order to get everything where I wanted/liked it best.

    it's baffling me why you have so many dislikes on all these videos. i've got a lot of experience analyzing youtube engagement behavior, but i'm stumped by this one. you're not the only channel i've seen this on too. this many dislikes is usually reserved for videos where the title is misleading or the creator did a bad job at whatever they're doing. but your videos (and the other two channels i've seen this on) don't appear to have any reason why so many people would dislike. and usually when there are a lot of dislikes there are comments explaining why, but there are no negative comments here or on the other guitar gear channels i've seen this on. there's gotta be some unique pattern that's affecting a cohort of the viewers of guitar gear channels specifically.

      In short, a lot of the guitar community hates me because I’m known to make fun of their favorite pieces of gear. I think some people just click on my videos specifically to hit the Dislike button. Fortunately, they don’t seem to realize that TH-cam views Likes and Dislikes the same. LOL

I've worked with pedals in the past, but with new technology, it's extremely exciting finding the best pedals, in the best places of your board!.. This video was exactly what I was searching for! Im now subscribed, and appreciate your insight!

    d'ya know? I start my setting this way and you gimme your opinion, please. First, guitar, wah wah, the riot Suhr distortion, the overdrive of marshall jackmmer them modulations then eq and finally delay. What do you think? What I've found is that with this setting, my distorsion sounds resemble a high gain one and that left me really happy. What d'ya think?

    • @RobertWJackson
      @RobertWJackson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re happy with the way that it sounds, that really all that matters. I personally would move the overdrive before the distortion and move the EQ before all of the modulation pedals, but that’s just how I like to set mine up.

    Where do you think each should go in an effects loop? Should they at all? Should just one or the other or both? I always put my tubescreamer in the fx loop because it sounds way better but im wondering how to use it with a distortion

    • @RobertWJackson
      @RobertWJackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you’re intentionally trying to bypass the amp’s preamp section and you’re running them into the effects loop return, I wouldn’t put either one in the effects loop. Run them through the front. They’re designed to work with the front end of your amp, overdrives especially.

    One problem of running a high gain distortion or fuzz after overdrive is that it will greatly multiply the excess noise (hum, hiss etc) from the overdrive (and other pedals) placed before it. This may or may not be an issue - but worth bearing in mind.

      TH-cam does have a “tip jar” of sorts, where Subscribers pay a few dollars a month to become a “member” of a creators channel and support them that way. However, that feature I do not believe is available to creators until they reach 100,000 Subscribers, which I obviously have a LOOOOOOONG way to go before I get that big. In the meantime, it’s merch sales through Teespring, revenue from people sitting through the ads, and the “tip jar” on the live streams. I’ve had a few people ask me about this now, so it’s probably time for me to get my Patreon account back up and running.
