I saw this guy at Ozfest in like 2002 maybe. Never heard of him. He is playing an absolutely screaming solo and throws the guitar down. The strings are just ringing out with deafening feedback. He pulls out a six pack of budweiser and slams a beer. He tosses one or two out into the crowd. He slams another. He tosses another one or two out. Guitar is still laying there just screaming. He picks it up and keeps soloing. The most goddamn rock and roll thing i have ever witnessed.

Your ear is your best teacher. Play, play, play, play, and play until it sounds good to your ear. I'll never forget when I got my first electric guitar back in 83 and I was trying to make any semblance of good sound coming out of it and getting nowhere. In frustration, I hit the strings hard and accidently hit an A power chord. It sounded powerful and amazing. Hitting that chord was the start of it all and my ear taught me so many chords that I didn't know the name of until many years later. 38 years later, I am still learning something almost daily. The guitar never stops giving once you start playing it.

The one thing I loved about Zakk is that he's probably Randy's greatest fan who got to live the dream of walking in the legend's footsteps. Dude didn't come in trying to change what was already written, he was respectful of Rhoads' work, but still left his own mark. It's impossible to not love him tbh.

@@virgilthemob1242 Great point. There’s a lot of bands who get a new guitarist and suddenly it’s as if the original never existed, and is never spoken of again. Of course that probably has some to do with the circumstances of how they departed, especially if it’s an acrimonious break rather than a fatal accident.

I never understood all the hate that flies Zakk’s way about “he just plays pentatonics” or “too many pinch harmonics”. What he said about taking away what everyone else was doing and what he was left with and become proficient at it makes total sense. His pentatonic runs are so clean and lighting fast chicken pickin’, you know who’s playing right off the bat. Killer player!

I love the pentatonic scale. I'm self-taught and so I learned my solo scales based on just pure feel and I ended up being told later that I was playing pentatonic. Obviously I have an affinity to the blues and blues-based rock and roll. Some of my musical idols growing up were Buddy Holly, Robert Johnson, Angus Young, Elmore James, Chuck Berry and a lot of the hippie blues rock from the '60s that I would jam with my dad's friends when I really practiced a lot started to get good at the guitar around age 11. People were all weirded out when I would be playing really loud and heavy distorted music in drop D then bust into a blues solo in the the middle of the song, but to my ear it sounded good and once people got used to it they ended up really enjoying our recordings.

@@SpeedDemon88X I’m sure it was an intentional homage. He knows his stuff too well to do that by accident.

@@ltsmash1200 yeah he's well versed in A LOT of music. I see him liking and commenting on many musicians on Instagram I'd never expect he would know, or enjoy.

Amazing player! Filling in for Randy and creating his own sound goes to show his talent! What a beast of a player!

I did EXACTLY the same thing with Spirit of Radio as a kid. My future new best friend in high school showed me what was up. I always did everything up high when there were open strings involved. My '71 Les Paul Custom had very tinny sounding pick-ups for some reason.

I actually lucked into it just noodling. I was like "woah! WTF? Thats Spirit of the Radio!" Having said that theres a zillion others I played wrong. And probably still do. But not many 🤘

I’ll never forget I was about 11 in 1991 and my Dad took my brother and I to the Milwaukee Auto Show and we sat inside some new car and the radio was playing No More Tears and my brother and I acted like we were checking out the car but in reality we both were completely mesmerized at the song we were hearing, it was incredible and epic, and still is. Each second felt like time stood still, we didn’t want it to end.
