  • In this video I play and compare a 1979 MXR Distortion + to a new 2019 MXR Distortion +. I play it through a 1983 Marshall JCM800 4010 and a 1971 Marshall 1982B 4x12 speaker cabinet using a 2013 Gibson SG Custom Shop

Nice that you mentioned Randy. He was my first guitar teacher when I was a kid. He told me I had to buy one, as if my life depended on it, so I got one. It was my first pedal. I still have it and it's also a 1979 or 78, and it looks just like yours, with about the same amount of wear. I had to clean out all the rotted foam. Going through junk, I recently found a tape of one of my lessons that I thought I had given away, but I guess I just made a copy. It also had a pick in the case, that I thought I gave away as well, but must have had two. You can easily tell it's Randy's because he had this freaky way of beveling the edge of the picks with his attack. I always thought he had an unusual sound, and realized a part of it was due to his pick attack. It was like he was bowing with the pick to some degree. The other pick I had, I gave to a Japanese girl who said she was the head of the Randy Rhoads fan club. I bought some pictures online, and put them in a frame and have now added the pick. Not only was he a great guitar player, but he was a really sweet, humble, nice person. After listening to my tape again, and hearing how slow and terrible I was, I was a beginner and could barely move my fingers, he had the patience of a saint. I wouldn't have been able to stand teaching me. You can hear how he is willing to go over and over the same thing with nothing in his voice that shows anything other than kindness. Randy was a great person. May he rest in peace.

That's an amazing story. You were very lucky to had the opportunity to take lessons from him.
I wonder how many of his students managed to have a successful career in music? We hear about a few of Joe Satriani's students who went on to as successful or more so than he did; but other than Joe Holmes being with Ozzy briefly, I don't know of any of Randy's former students who got much attention. Perhaps it wasn't as publicized anymore by the time Randy was on my radar.

The 79 is a slightest bit more mellow and quieter then the 81 and you can crank it up as much as you want and won't really feed back much or if any at all. The 81 is the slightest bit more hairy when cranked up and will feed back a bit if you let go and are close to the amp. I usually favor the " fat/bassy/loose" side of Marshall sound, whether is low or high gain but this pedal that tightens up and brighten things sounds great, instant 1980 heavy metal! About original vs reissue, well they sound a little different, the original sounds "rounder" but for its purpose, the commodity of a status led and external power supply the actual one is fine!

The 2019 IS making 2020 era high gain sounds from the set of mxr pedals.
When Are you people going to wake-up?
You took 1 pedal out of the set.
It does NOT make any 80's era sounds.

I have two '79 Distortion+ pedals and they sound really different. One has less headroom, more gain, sounds fatter and is less noisy. It's great in front of a clean 100W amp to mimic a saturated distortion sound. The other one gets fuzzier but I like that one as a low gain kinda Tube Screamery treble bosster, hard to describe :D

Sometimes manufacturers used whatever components they could source, or suitable substitutes to meet demand. If assembly was done by hand, people make mistakes. I find this a lot when servicing gear. Of course, components do wear. I would look inside and compare the two if your curious. There may even have been a design change. It's not uncommon.

If you don't look at the video and listen to the audio ONLY, you don't really get much difference, in fact I'd say no body could tell. To me I couldn't tell. But as soon as I watched the video and listened at same time I did think there was little difference, like the newer ones presence is slightly more in front of the sound. I mean it's a small amount, something no one is really going to notice, and something that really could be made negligible by different gear and setup etc. The important thing here is the meat and potatoes are there. I fraction difference really doesn't mean anything when it's something that could be corrected by the turn of a knob on your amp or what ever. You'd have to be some snob to really split hairs over this and making sure you had to have the original. Good video btw thanks for making it.

I've got a '78 Distortion+ and a Marshall JCM800 4010 just like Johan's. It's a great pedal, but only into a crunchy amp. I put the volume all the way up and the gain at about 11 o'clock. This fattens the tone and adds sustain and harmonics and works really well with a Marshall. It does NOT sound trebley or harsh (the reissue sounds harsh to me), though turning up the gain increases the treble. My only complaint is that it sounds a compressed through a clean amp, and the output volume can be lower than the guitar volume.
I've been through many pedals, but this is the only pedal that always stays on my board.

Awesome, as always Johan! I have an original '78 D+ and a script logo reissue, as well as several I made myself. To my dismay, the reissue is slightly sweeter than my original. It may just be the particular units I have. I think the aesthetics and the LED are the only differences between the script reissue and the new one in this vid. Either way, it's a very simple circuit; hard to get it wrong.

    • @dreyn7780
      @dreyn7780 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Johan doesn't have a clue what you're talking about.
      You're completely wrong.
The script version has less gain than the 1979 version.
The 2019 version has lots more gain than all versions accept the 2000 era model.
The 2019 IS high gain like the 2000 era model but instead of the bass bottomend of that er, its got a traditional 70's style warm bottomend and fuzzy style distortion.
These days the distortion + pedal sound IS extremely high gain sound.
They produce more gain than the 70's and 80's versions.
We're talking about the mxr pedal set.
      We're NOT cave people anymore.
We play RR's full set of mxr pedals.

And important aspect here is that the older units will tend to all have a difference in tone. Capacitors for example after 40 years are not going to sound the same as they did back then. It's as simple as that. So every one of those older pedals is going to have a variability. Much more so than the new ones due to that fact.

The 70's version is slightly more quite and also more even across the frequency spectrum. Especially at lower volume it sounds more compressed like a tube would.
The new one has more gain and it shows at lower volumes. However when they both over drive the amplifier tubes, it's hard to tell what pedal is what.

  • @dreyn7780
    @dreyn7780 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A johan style comparison.
Lots of other ways to compare these 2 pedals.
The original intention was its an amp in a pedal.
You can make any of the amp sounds at lower volumes.
    An amp before the amp.
It changes the size of the amp.
As an after thought, it became a amp pushing an amp.
After 12 versions its fine tuned to be a pedal pushing a set of pedals and a scorching amplifier called marshall and specificly 1959 RR.
So when you demo it in 2022, you must realize its fine tuned for RR's signature equipment rig.
Its also intended to be used in the full set of mxr pedals.
In that situation the newer models show their inventors skill.
The 2019 model becomes essential equipment and the 1979 becomes historical novelty.
The 2019's low impedance bottom end in RR's signature equipment setup becomes extremely powerful.
So does the vastly improved soloing gain boost.
They're night and day different pedals.
Once you hear the 2019's high gain sound, you'll be desperate to get all the inbetween distortion + pedals.
The anniversary script model blows away that 1979 version.
Your 79 has more gain than the anniversary script model.

What I'm hearing here is a bit more sustain and slightly different coloration of the high end in the 2019 pedal, with the same settings . How much of that is due to the deterioration of the components is arguable, but it's fairly damn close.
What I find interesting is how much less low end is being created by a 1979 guitar rig, than we hear today. But I must admit that the whole quest for powerful low end in guitar tones was completely created by young bedroom guitarists, like myself, in the early 80's, trying to emulate what we thought we were hearing on albums of the day. We never realized how thin a spectrum that the guitar actually sits in, on a professionally produced recording. We didn't realize that the bass was underpinning the tone of our guitars so much. Quite honestly, it was very common for a guitarist to practice with a drummer at the time, and it was just as likely that the next member of the band would be another guitarist, instead of a bass player. Bass players were hard to find, mainly because it's not considered a flash instrument, like drums and guitars. Also, in most recordings, the bass was something that you actually had to listen for (except for maybe Pink Floyds"Money"), drums and guitar were in your face. It just became natural for guitarists with no recording experience to search for a way to produce a roaring guitar tone with lots of low end, because we "didn't know any better", and that's what we thought we heard. After attending enough concerts, we finally realized that certain instruments filled certain frequency ranges, and not often the two shall meet. But I guess there's no going back now. Or, at least not until you meet the engineer and producer at a good studio, and they tell you how it is. Anyway, the conclusion is that the bass player gets a big pat on the back, and a bigger part in the mix, which makes him feel better after all these years, lol...
