Great reaction and really interesting analysis. The Kami Band here were Leda Cygnus (blue guitar), Takayoshi Ohmura (gold guitar), BOH (6 string bass) and Hideki Aoyama (drums).
The 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' intro is only played live since the Kami Band are just the live band. On the album 'Rondo of Nightmare' is a stand-alone song without the intro.
On the studio recordings we only know for certain of Leda of the Kami Band being involved in some songs (he wrote the arrangements for another Su solo 'No Rain, No Rainbow' and he played bass and possibly guitar for 'Arkadia' ... there may be more I don't know of).

This performance is my standard answer to anyone who says that BABYMETAL aren't really metal. : )
Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) has a penetrating clarity to her voice that makes it perfect for heavy music.
Without having to boost her volume she can still be heard through the drums, bass and guitars.
This song had it's world premiere the previous night. Su was just sixteen during this performance.

Actually, what you saw there was a display monitor/tablet. I do not know what was on it but I am guessing it was the set-list and perhaps a visual metronome for the click-track he was working from. Hideki IS a human metronome!!
While it is common, as you noted, that when there are two guitarist one will take lead and the other provides rhythm, Babymetal is pretty famous for its duel Lead work. Leda and Takayoshi work very well together. Thanks for noting that!!

@@ChaseCarneson Yeah, a lot of Babymetal songs have backing tracks for certain effects (like the background piano in this song, or the "scream" they use for Su on "Iine"), so they drummer usually has a display where they can see what the backing track is doing. This is a random sidebar, but there's a very funny clip of another J-Rock band called Scandal, where they have a song with a tracked effect, and the Drummer forgot to count the tech off before the song and has to stop them to restart the song after a few seconds. Using backing effects seems very common nowadays. th-cam.com/video/jzMpLiouxYE/w-d-xo.html

What he said. They obviously have a huge show (she came up thru the floor, Rose 10ft higher, & spun independently of the band), so there are tons of timing issues and manipulators, lights etc. My guess is Hideki starts the synchronized computer cues for each section of show. Playing 15/8, 5/4, 3/4, &4/4 in the same song, having a backing track makes it MORE. Impressive to me (I’m in loose bands that are ‘good’ at recovering after someone can’t find the 1 in straight 4/4). BabyMetal and Gacharic Spin (aka Doll$Boxx, chaotic mashup fun) helped me get over the hangup that it should all be live. I think the radio effect was prerecorded (tho the sound changes prove nothing), some of her screams, all harmonies, and sometimes the other girls’ parts are tracks too. (Did anyone mention that she’s 16, the other two 14, when they had this two night solo stand at Budokan, most prestigious venue, almost 15000 seats, with the best metal backing band available?!) But so what, the show is fantastic, and their individual talents all shine, no weak links, enhanced experience... took me decades to get over it tho, then I realized, EVery big band does it, it’s just a matter of extent, and whether it’s a coverup... those guitarists are not even the best in BabyMetal’s stable, Leda went first, Isao on 8strings can hang, and mini Mikio Fujioka R.I.P., who is golden guitarist(Ohmura)’s instructor, did Allan Holdsworth and Adrian Belew tributes. Boh on the 6string bass in the other hand, (except for slap? hmmm) is as good as it gets. Side note: Gacharic Spins founders went to school with drummer Hideki, and are asked to be host band for golden guitarist Takayoshi Ohmura’s annual birthday concert jam, which usually includes this whole “”Kami Band”, “band of gods” (Ohmura is also known for formerly being Marty Friedman’s sideman, and for his signature line of pink glitter ESPs)
Mikio screen left (his last live band performance), Ohmura center, Boh & Hideki, ladies are Gacharic Spin. Low quality single-cam Judas Priest encore jam
      th-cam.com/video/wgTh6wZjtGE/w-d-xo.html
Another piece written by & for the Kami Band “Gathering of Metal Warriors” has Boh, Hideki, Ohmura, & Mikio’s solo that is one of the best of all time imho. There’s a version of this with Leda, & Stu from Galneryus as well, 4 of the (100?) best guitarists ever...
      th-cam.com/video/PMJ2RkYkhAA/w-d-xo.html
Don’t stop me, I’m on a roll! Same Gathering song, when Ohmura(Japan ) did an ESP event in China, he had 10yr old Yoyo play Mikio’s part. Fancam of an imperfect (possibly unrehearsed) performance, but the point is there. Love me some prodigies! facebook.com/346074032404979/posts/498900153789032/?d=n
Yoyo & 3 other teens, build to straight wanking, but of course, they’re teens!, and they can do it and we can’t, so... th-cam.com/video/8kV3sXOYPuw/w-d-xo.html

A little explanation as to where the other 2 girls are at. Su-metal has a total of 4 solo songs, 2 featured in each of the first 2 albums. And the other girls, Moametal and Yuimetal, collectively called Black Babymetal as a subunit of Babymetal, have 4 duet songs. Also, 2 in each of the first 2 albums. Black Babymetal songs are usually more harder and aggressive metal. During their earlier concerts, Su would perform 2 solos and Black Babymetal would perform 2 songs. Also, the Kami band would also perform 2 solo intros. Besides the "Mishief of Metal Gods ", the Kami band would also perform an instrumental intro to Catch Me If You Can, and more recently to YAVA! also. The Kami band also wrote an instrumental of their own written by Takayoshi Ohmura and Mikio Fujioka (who passed away in early 2018) called Hill of Wysteria. If you like the Kami band guitar work, then check this video out.

"Where are the other girls?" - In every concert there are songs where Su sings solo so the other two girls can take a break and there are songs where the other two girls sing and Su takes a break such as with GJ!
Another great react full of very informative insight. As for pre-recorded bits, almost no one sings live without it these days and the labels are always tinkering with official videos that go out.
I do hope you will continue to react/review Baby Metal. No two songs are alike. They like to experiment. Some of the stuff they have done:
    1. Performed Pain Killer and Breaking the Law with Rob Halford of Judas Priest (the two side girls Yui and Moa played the guitar in Breaking the Law)
    2. Performed Breaking the Law with Chad Smith from The Red Hot Chili Peppers
    3. Performed Road Of Resistance with Dragon Force
    4. Performed one of their songs Gimme Chocolate with Skrillex
    5. Sabaton from Joakim Broden joined them on their song Oh Majinai
    6. Alisswa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy and Thai rapper F. Hero joined them on songs on their recent album

Cool that are you diving into some more technical stuff. I love Takayoshi Ohmura, the second guitarist. He does not only have incredible technical abilities (you‘ll have to check out his picking technique at some point), but also a great feeling for tone and melody. I like how he moves his leg along with his bending right at the beginning of his solo part, it shows that he really feels it. And I love his looks as well, he is both handsome and badass looking in his facepaint (saying this a heterosexual male).
I‘m pretty sure the vocals in that quiet middle part are prerecorded, as are the piano and synth sounds. Personally, I‘d prefer her doing it live, even if it might sound less perfect.
One thing that really struck me only after dozens of times of hearing the song is the insane rhythmical correlation of the vocals and the piano during the beginning of the second verse (starting at 10:56 in your video). I‘m sure that must be hard to do for Su. BTW, there have been leaks of what seems to be her ear monitor tracks, they feature a voice that counts her in when there are rhythmical changes etc coming up. Pretty interesting to me (no idea if that’s a common thing when playing to a click track).
The song is their darkest one lyrically, it’s about a person being trapped in a nightmare. They feel something coming towards them through the darkness and try to hide, but in the end (during that quieter part mentioned above) they give up and ask the mysterious presence to at least reveal itself once before the end.
It may be my favourite song. The melody is dark but hauntingly beautiful, and the music supports the atmosphere perfectly, as do Su‘s emotional vocals. I can feel the desperation in her voice at the end. Needless to say that everyone else’s performance is pretty flawless as well. Fantastic song!
BABYMETAL have a few Su solo songs and a few that feature only the other two girls on vocals, they call the latter „Black BABYMETAL“ (at least until Yui‘s departure). This allowed them to get a breather at some points during the shows. Perhaps it’s the reason why their shows seem to have gotten shorter since Black BABYMETAL is no more.

I do not know for sure if Su is singing the quiet part live or not but I assume she is. With added vocal affects of course. The reason I assume she is singing it live is because, normally during recorded parts, she moves the microphone away from her face to make it clear that its playback. Plus there's no reason she can't be singing it. I am no expert so I definitely don't know that for sure.

    • @jason7120

I think some people take what they're doing as a gimmick, which is a real shame, because there is so much real talent there. Other musicians have collaborated with Babymetal, and they've always commented on how professional they are. I would recommend you check out more Babymetal. I'd really like to see "Headbanger" (Live Legends 1997) and "Catch Me If You Can". Those are really good starting points, though it's easy to give a huge list (so much of their catalog is fantastic)! I would agree with you, but then at the same time, if you look carefully you can see her wording the words. In that position, I would think she wouldn't bother to try because it is so difficult to see her lips and face. If you were there watching it live, there would be no way to see if she was lip-syncing, so it would be kind of a wasted effort on her part. It COULD be that they used this live recording AS the song in the studio version and just did some minor changes here and there. Regardless though, it is an amazing song, and she is in my mind, one of the most talented singers today. I'm always excited to hear and see new material from Babymetal.

This song is off their first album. Keep in mind that when they were recording their first album, they were very young. In their early concerts, they performed that first album in its entirety. Off that first album Rondo of Nightmare and Akatsuki were Su-metal solo songs. Meanwhile Yui and Moa (Black BABYMETAL) also had two solo songs. This worked out great in their early live shows, as it gave each of the girls a break from this obviously exhausting performance. Interestingly enough, none of these "solo" songs are a part of their current set. I think the last time they performed this song live was in July of 2017.

in the past usually play with 6 string (like on this video), but now used 8 string.
    - Takayoshi Ohmura (2nd guitar solo)
always play with 7 string. last year during the show "BM Metal Galaxy World Tour in Japan", both him & Leda was play using 9 string guitar.
    - B.O.H (6 string bass)
    - Hideki Aoyama (drum). his brother & father also drummer. his father (the legend Jun Aoyama) is consider as one's of the best drummer. no wonder why he's like "The Human Metronome",.. LoL

Great reaction, Chase, thank you! Babymetal uses backing tracks in many of their songs for keyboards (both piano and synths), percussion, growls and sometimes even for the 3rd guitar. Also there are some pre-recorded voice harmonies, screams and in this case the effect-overlayed vocals. But from what I've seen (and what I like a lot) Su never tries to trick you with that, she may pretend she's screaming/singing just for the show but then she usually takes away her mic or stops lip-syncing (like in this performance) before the pre-recorded sound actually ends. And still she may scream for real in some other song.
Regarding your further Babymetal reactions I have a small list of suggestions:
    _Headbanger_ (Live 'Legend 1997' 2013): th-cam.com/video/QEsOaMbNFww/w-d-xo.html
_Ijime, Dame, Zettai_ (Live at Sonisphere Festival 2014): th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html
_Akatsuki_ (another Su's solo song, Live at Budokan 2014): th-cam.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/w-d-xo.html
_Kimi to Anime ga Mitai_ (Kiba of Akiba cover, Budokan 2014): th-cam.com/video/Tl1URUWFsO4/w-d-xo.html
These are quite old performances but TH-cam tends to block their newer live videos. And best Babymetal is live Babymetal, not only for the show but sound wise also.

Rondo is one of the Su solos. They don't tend to play them anymore, but they used to give Moa and Yui (when she was still part of the band) a song or two off and have Su sing Solo (ballad based songs with a more theater-like presentation), followed by Su having a song or two off and having Moa and Yui play black babymetal songs (playing a lot heavier on the cute side of things vocally with some killer crowd interaction). It might have been a way to give the girls a break so they could catch their breath while avoiding doing an intermission type break, nowadays they just do the trio songs for the 45m-1.5 hour shows (depending on venue). They are honestly the most fun band I've ever seen live, the fan base is incredible.
Mischiefs is an intro that they put in front of songs in their live shows, it is not on an album unfortunately. They do have two mostly instramental based songs on album though ("Babymetal Death" and "In the Name of." Babymetal Death is a pun based introduction song ('th" isn't a sound in Japanese and so they mispronounce 'desu' (for this purpose translating to 'I am') to make it sound like death. In the Name of is a song introducing the 'dark-side' of babymetal from the Apocrypha storyline.
If you can, always watch live versions of their songs, the energy is amazing, plus they don't get super over produced (a problem I have been finding in Metal in general on albums). There is also a clear progression in Su's voice that is fun to see.

    • @markyg236
      @markyg236 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you fr the 'desu' comment. I had to do a whooooole bunch of searching around to figure this out. I think part of the problem is that if you turn CC on it mis-translates it as 'death' in English. Euro-centric fans are used to "I am (name)" where some? / all? Oriental languages use "(name) I am". Similar to the practice of using surname before given name e.g. Mori-sensei addressing Su as Nakamota Suzuka.

To me that bit where she whispers does sound pre-recorded because of how different her voice sound in that part specifically, this concert has also some post-production so there's that as well.
As for the band (they are called 'kami band') this is my favorite line-up, the first guy with dark blue guitar is Leda Cygnus and he has other bands and projects aside from Babymetal, the guy playing the golden guitar is Takayoshi Ohmura he has played with Marty Friedman and think he alos has other bands he plays with aside from Babymetal. The bassist is Boh and Hideki Aoyama is the drummer, and they are all very good and skilled. There's other members they use for the band depending on who's available for tours and stuff like that but this line up is what I think must people recognize and likes the most. The only notable member you don't see here is another guitarist called Mikio who passed away 2 years ago on an accident, he was also a regular member of the band very skilled and also very liked by the fans.
The intro isn't part of the song and is listed as a separate track in the live album of this concert and they do often make this type of intros for other songs like 'Catch Me if You Can'. This song is a Suzuka solo, she has more songs like this one and some people prefer this style because it allows her to showcase more what she can do as a vocalist, it also gives a more serious and darker vibe as she has a powerful voice and much developed and with more body than the other two, whom to be fair only do back vocals. The other two members also have songs without Suzuka and while not having the vocal skills they can still hold their own when they are required to act as a duo. The three girls have enough charisma, energy and stage presence to perform in front of huge crowds so I think is clever they have different dynamics to deploy during shows. You get to see the girls perform with the kami band backing them up, then you get to see them perform separately and you also get to see the band having the spotlight for a bit.
For other songs to react there's another Suzuka solo called Akatsuki, this song has strong power-metal vibes and the music and instrumentation is also very good and rich in resources.th-cam.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/w-d-xo.html
Then for songs featuring the three of them Headbanger and Ijime, dane, zettai are also very popular and liked among the fans, like Babymetal classics so to say lol.

"The waning moon shines bright, but there's a gloom of rampant madness. I hear laughing all around. It bares its fangs and its eyes gleam. There's no escape. It flickers, appearing and disappearing in my mind. A nightmarish rondo keeps repeating. The light of dawn is so far away, I have no choice but to run through the darkness."
Hi Chase! Good reaction! Rondo of Nightmare is a song about a girl trying to escape from... something. We don't really know what it is, and part of the song is that we never really find out. When Su puts her head down and sings softly she's pleading with, whatever it is, to at least show itself before she perishes. As with all nightmares it never gets resolved. Su has two solos on each of the first two albums, while Yui and Moa (as Black BABYMETAL) have two duets on each of the first two albums. They do this so that during performances they can each give the other a break.
The "Mischiefs of the Metal Gods" intro is not on the album or part of the song, it's just something they do live. Usually during live performances there is somewhere for the Kami's to play solos. Before "Rondo of Nightmare", "Catch Me If You Can", and recently "Kagerou" is usually when they'd do it.

I love the "technical" approach you have, especially for the guitarists! Thanks for that little retrospective. Definitely gonna subscribe.
What or who you didn't see in that performance was Mikio Fujioka (R.I.P.). He was known as a guitar virtuoso. He regularly switched with Leda Cygnus, die guy who had the first solo. He was technically one of the best ones you'll see anywhere in my opinion.
You should also watch Akatsuki (th-cam.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/w-d-xo.html), there's super awesome musical and vocal stuff in the live versions. Amore is also pretty awesome vocally and musically, but there's no live version up on TH-cam as far as I know. Only compilations. The same can be said with Tales of the Destinies. I saw in other comments that your Road of Resistance video got taken down, that's always my first recommendation. No Rain, No Rainbow is pretty cool, that's probably the slowest Babymetal song (th-cam.com/video/pDgqo6fcliY/w-d-xo.html). If you want to delve more into the black metal/death metal part of Babymetal you should listen to Sis.Anger (th-cam.com/video/BZLZcoWZKN0/w-d-xo.html), which is by Yuimetal and Moametal, without Su. It's probably the hardest song if you exclude Babymetal Death, which was mostly used as the intro song, because of the similarities in Japanese pronounciations of death and desu. And then there's The One (th-cam.com/video/TZRvO0S-TLU/w-d-xo.html) which is their anthem to their fans. But it's in English and I think that because she didn't speak the language very well at that time she can't really make use of her complete repertoir because she's not 100% comfortable with it. But the show to the song is always the awesomest. From the new album I would suggest Starlight, which is a tribute song to the aforementioned guitarist who died in an accident, but there's also only fancams and studio version on TH-cam, because it's so new and they want to sell BluRays and DVDs.
To your "she got some power" comment: When the management "hired" the Kami Band they asked the Producer if they should play a little quieter for her. And the producer simply said "give it all you got". Apparently the band was pretty impressed by little 14 year old Suzuka when they heard her perform with them, because she effortlessy sang over them.
To the question of the recording: that was recorded. She "skips" these melodic parts often (sorry, don't know the real term). The parts where her voice is altered or the part in Gimme Chocolate with the "Too, too late, too too late, P, P, come one!". Don't know why they do it, probably to have the song as much on the album version as possible? She could easily sing these parts live.

Since they originally come from the Idol scene, there is a lot of prerecordings going on with the two other girls. Su herself sings live as far as I know (maybe not in some really old videos). Su is amazingly talented, but remember she is very young in a lot of these videos. Now that she is a bit older her voice grew and now the talent and hard work is coming through more and more.
I personally like it more when she sings alone, but thats up to tase I guess.
You can see more of her vocal prowess in No Rain No Rainbow which I absolutely recommend.
Also PaPaYa is more recent and very interesting (and WILD). PaPaYa actually was my personal introduction to them.
I am fairly new to Babymetal myself, so if I say anything wrong here I hope someone corrects me
EDIT: I personally dislike the live videos in the UK where they are very young, the audio is kind of shitty and Su's voice is better now than it was in 2014(?). I always try to find recordings of more recent shows.

I'm pretty sure the part where she sings quietly is a recording. Su just does a very good job at pretending to sing that part but it's not sung live. Generally speaking when BABYMETAL use lipsync they do not try to hide it. They want you and the audience to know it's playback. On the montage of this video they did a good job leaving you wondering wether this is live or not.
Loved your reaction by the way Chase and already excited for the next BM :). The two girls are having a break while Su is on one of her solo songs. The two girls have their own duets where Su takes her own breaks and prepare for her own solos. It's a way to get a breather for the girls who are dancing and performing for up to 1 hour and a half. The part where Yui & Moa play their duets songs is called "Black BABYMETAL".

Wrong, but that's okay. She is perfectly able to sing it without imperfections. A simple mic effect is all that is needed. If you don't think Su is capable of reproducing this like she does with everything else she does, in many times a pure copy of what she has done before sorry to hear that. She can do a lot with her voice, always have she does it live with BxMxC throwing her voice to give an autotune effect like in the studio version.

@@jason7120 If you have ever watched the other night of this Budokan concert on the DVD you can clearly see that it's not live. I do believe she can pull off many great things, including this, live, especially if there is/was a voice effect timed for this moment. I'm not a BABYMETAL amateur at this point. But I do believe this bit is pre-recorded. It probably doesnt STRICLY HAVE to be, but it probably is. I'll be glad if you manage to prove to me that this is sung live. I see all reasons to believe it is not. As much as I love Su and as much as I know what she's capable of, that doesn't mean BM is flawless. Su is human unlike the lore says and she does have voice cracks here and there as any artist would. Just go have a listen to the Tokyo Dome Tales of the Destinies, the first time around when she has to go very high on the "destinies" part, her voice cracks hard. On the Bluray, in postproduction they obviously tampered with it.
All I'm saying is, I don't know if this is sung live 100% but if I had to bet my life on it, I would definetly go the backtrack route.

@@jason7120 I am a big BM fan, but I agree with dem0n that that portion of the song is recording. • @DeePal072
      @DeePal072 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, it's pre recorded, like MOA's rap on Da Da Dance (she sings the chorus) indeed they don't pretend it's not, it's made pretty obvious and you can tell the difference. I think the only song where they use effects on the mic is Distortion, so far. She definitely sings Shanti without any added effect, which is amazing.
In BxMxC the very high notes at the beginning are played on instruments, later in the song, she is the one singing them, again you can tell the difference, part of the chorus is pre recorded too. Unfortunately after the departure of YUI, MOA alone can do so much, indeed she choose to focus on her great dancing skills and while she still sings her parts especially in the older songs, SU has to rely on pre recorded tracks for background chorus here and there in the new stuff, BxMxC included. I think they still use some tracks with YUI's voice as a layer in KARATE.

I love the concept of the band. The musiciands are amongst the best I've heard lately, specially the bass player. I get that being "Baby Metal", the vocalist would have the traditional nasal high pitched voice so popular in pop or tradicional Japanese music. But it IS the vocals that kill it all to me. It's like having Nightwish musicians playing and instead of Floor, Britney Spears is in the vocals.

Oh and yes that was Su singing that haunting little solo melody and not a recording. There may well be some effects on her voice at that moment but it is also a singing technique that you find a lot in Japanese music where the sound is pitched high in the nasal cavity as opposed to from being driven from the chest as it were. After the guitars and drums had the chance to show off their chops this is the singer showing off her own skill range.

Really glad you reacted to this, you have better reactions than most, because you are knowledgeable about it.
As they say: play to the song.
Yes, Babymetal is a live experience, doesn't matter if it's a big show like this or a stage at a festival without any special lighting, etc. They bring it live.
If I had to make a suggestion: Tales of the Destinies is the most complicated Babymetal song.
I can give you a link, so you can react to how it was performed proper. But your reaction most not include the video itself, we can use a 'link&sync' method (you do a countdown and we open the video in an other window and we watch at the same time, if you stop and rewind/start again, you need to do a new count down for the 'sync').
Or the studio audio/abum version is possible too.
Or a crappy 'compilation video' here on TH-cam, where you can hardly see much and will just be very confusing but their will be parts included from fancams and even other songs.
